Not enough space to restore?
I tried to restore my iPod touch with a previous backup by right-clicking on my iPod in the sidebar and clicking Restore. About halfway through, it said I had insufficient disk space. Why am I getting this notification if I'm using a previous backup, not making another backup? Do I have to put my iPod in recovery mode first, and if I do, where do I go from there? Thanks!
If after completing the Nov restore you can boot your main drive you will be able to tell what space is left. I would then try to restore the Dec changes which should be quite fast as there will be a much smaller amount to be restored.
Concerning the original problem I can only assume that the spare space on your Mac partition is not a lot. I don't know the processes involved in a restore but I suspect that there is a need for a certain amount of temporary storage space as files are sorted, perhaps decompressed then written on the appropriate disc segment, etc. Whatever you added in Dec might have taken you just past the critical space required.

You're saying I should put the backup on another, bigger external drive, erase everything on my computer and restore from the 2nd external drive? Sounds a bit risky, especially if I erase my computer and the problem is with the backup.

You can then sync that stuff to your phone. For SMS's, while you can extract them from your backup, there's no way to get them on your phone. -

I have an iPhone 4 running ios 7.0.6. Since it's pretty slow I decided to try backup&restore. Opened iTunes (updated at the latest version yesterday), created a backup (took only a couple of mins, while it used to take dozens at least. Not sure if this is a good thing since the progress bar didn't show the step from 1 to 7 but only a continuos progress bar with no caption but "backing up"), hitted the "restore backup" button, but a couple of minutes later a pop up said "Can't restore your backup because there's not enough free space on the iPhone" (or something similar). The iPhone rebooted as usual.
I saw tons of discussions with this topic but the problem is I have almost 9 gb of free space in a 32gb total capacity!
What can I do?

I would try the following:
Uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes completely, then trying to restore from backup. (You may want to follow their guide to uninstalling iTunes and related applications since there's a specific sequence to that. More here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1925 )
Alternatively, and this may take longer but I've found it helpful in the past, try restore to factory settings once and then, after activating your iPhone and logging in as you, try restore from backup, but from the backup from before your iOS update of course. -
Not enough space to restore from backup
My MacBook Air, version 10.7.4, has been having a few issues lately so I wanted to restore my entire system from my Time Machine backup from yesterday. However, when I restart in Recovery System, navigate to yesterday's backup and click on Macintosh HD to restore to, a notice appears saying "this disk does not have enough disk space to restore your system."
The backup is from my same computer, and in the meantime I have even deleted several GB. So how can a backup be larger than the system it came from? My laptop has 120 GB of storage, (112 taken) and as far as I can tell my backup is 107 GB.

Not enough space to restore backup after upgrade

Just upgraded a phone (4/4s) from 4.3.3 to 7.1.2 but I can't restore from iTunes Backup when going through the "set up iPhone" process.
Its telling me there isn't enough space on the iphone.
There is 3.27 GB free on the phone. I can't get into Setting on the phone at the moment because its in set-up mode.
To free up space - is it ok if I delete photo's from the phone via windows explorer ? If I restore from backup - will the photo's I have deleted be restored again ?

MaryDifficult question... I think you will have to set up your iPhone as a new iPhone. If your backup is too large for the iPhone, you won't be able to restore it.
I have a couple of questions for you:
- Which iPhone do you have, the 4 or the 4s (the 4 has a stripe next to the headphone minijack, the 4s not)?
- How much gigabites storage has your iPhone? -

My problem is that i have 21go of the section "others" on my iPod 5. I changed my LCD last day and now i noticed all my pictures on my phone are gone. I tried to restore the back that I got yesterday but it wont let me because its telling me there is not enough space on my phone!!! That's wierd because I didn't download any app or anything else since my last backup and on the other hand about 3000 pictures are gone, how come there is not enough space left! I also check my usage on my phone and it shows that i have about 7.0 GB pictures!!! BUT my photos is empty! I want my picture back on my phone any solution anyone?

I have updated up my ipad2 which had the original version on it (4.??) to the latest version of IOS. Before I did this I backed up the ipad to my laptop so I wouldnt lose precious pics and videos of my baby boy. Now that the latest version is on the ipad it is now asking me if I want to start as a new ipad or restore my backup from itunes. So i select restore my backup from itunes and connect to itunes but it now says there is not enough space to do so. I have a feeling it is because there are alot of pics on our ipad which i presume are all in this backup, many of which we do not need on the ipad anymore but I have no idea on how I go about deleting these pics?? And how do I find where on my laptop this backup is and most importantly the video and pics of my baby boy.
Restoring an iPad from an iTunes-generated backup should not require an Apple ID password.
Did you encrypt the iPad backup? If so, then trying to restore will require entering the encryption password. -
i just restored my ipad2 to iOS 6.1.3 yesterday. i have been trying to restore from backup, but i keep getting error messages from itunes (running latest version of itunes) that says there is not enough space to save the backup on the computer. i have tried clearing up as much space on my PC (windows xp), but there is still not enough room. and ive tried disk cleanup on my computer and resetting the ipad and running it through recovery mode (as some articles sugggested it would help with restoring after failed attempts). i read on another question in the apple support discussions that someone just moved his whole backup folder into his external harddrive and then he was able to restore from backup.
the backup is definitely saved on my computer (itunes confirms that), and the backup folder is supposed to be here \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\, but im still not finding it with that file path. i get as far as "username" and then i dont see "application data" and so on. but when i try searching that file path in google chrome, i find it and i see it, but its strange that i cant find it in the "docs and settings" folder in my C drive.

Lastly, when I select restore from backup in iTunes, would it automatically know that it's the copy on my external to restore backup from? Delete all back ups on MacBook and create new back up. Restart his MB and attempt to restore again. Do not forget to erase your iphone 5 before restore.

Restoring backup in itunes fails- not enough space
After upgrading ios on my iphone 4s all contacts lost. Tried restoring from itunes only to get message "Can't restore...not enough space on iphone" when there is plenty. Have taken screen shot. Help. Spent several hours trying to find support for this. I'm new to communities so patience please.

Can't restore iPad, not enough space, lost Pin to get in.
Password was changed on iPad and when trying to restore to factory settings, I can't as there is not enough space. What can I do? I can't see the iPad on "Find my iPad" on iCloud either, so that is not an option.
