Not even 5 minutes of battery life !

Hi All
I have a 2.5 year old Powerbook G4 15". The problem is with my battery. Over the course of the last six months, the battery capacity has significantly decreased to the point that if the power adapter is now unplugged for even a minute, the computer just shuts down instead of going to sleep ! I am assuming that's because the battery does not have enough juice to power the computer even when it's in sleep mode ?
I checked the battery info as provided by 'System Profiler' and I see the following which makes no sense to me:
Battery Installed: Yes
First low level warning: No
Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 65472
Remaining Capacity (mAh): 860
Amperage (mA): 0
Voltage (mV): 12288
Cycle Count: 643
How can the full charge capacity of a 4800 mAh battery be 64000 ? And why is the Amperage being reported as 0 ? It sounds like something is seriously wrong with the battery.
Anyway, on to my questions:
(1) Will resetting the PMU help in any way ? I doubt it myself but just want to make sure.
(2) I am pretty sure I will have to buy a new battery at this point. I went to the Apple online store but they have a backlog of 2-4 weeks on a Powerbook G4 15" battery (hmm, may be everyone is having battery problems ?) ! I really don't want to wait that long. What do people think about the Newertech Nupower High Capacity Batteries offered by OWC ? They seem to have gotten good reviews since they were releaseed but I it would be good to hear from people who have actually used them.
Thanks in advance,
Nitin
PowerBook 15, 80GB, 1GB   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

What you're seeing is a lithium battery that is about to die. It's not unusual for a lithium battery to have sudden power dropoffs at the end of it's life. With 643 cycles on your battery, it's not surprising. Also, it seems when the batteries are about done, the battery capacity numbers get flakey.
You can certainly reset your PMU to see if it makes any difference - won't hurt anything.

  • Satellite Pro A200 - Is 26 minutes of battery life normal?

    Hi All,
My Satellite Pro A200 laptop is just over 1.5 years old (or young :P) and I have a huge problem with the battery - it only lasts for a total of _26 minutes_ under "high performace" mode in Vista - other power modes increase the time by only 5-7 minutes.
I have tweated the system setup to:
    - run as few programs at startup;
    - to use as little memory in relation to graphics (as in diabled vista themes, and "fancy" operations such as show contents of window whilst dragging).
    - remain on the lowest brightness level.
The programs that do run on startup are my anti virus (F-Secure), and ATI catalyst control.
I have also cleaned the registry of any conflicts and regularly virus scan.
I have used Ubuntu on this laptop as well and the battery life is not that much better, which brings me to the conclusion that the battery is nearing its end.
I was wondering if this battery life time (26 minutes max on high performace) is normal for a laptop after only 1.5 years?* (I don't remember how long it lasted when I first bought it).
Also, I have a laptop from other manufacturer of 2 years and the charge of its battery lasts a minimum of 4 hours (on Windows XP).
Both notebooks batteries are 6 cell.
Any suggestions of how to improve my battery life?
    Thanks in advance.

The battery working time depends on different factors:
If different hardware parts like CPU, GPU, HDD, ODD, display are running with highest performance then your battery working time will decrease dramatically
Additionally if you would lose an stronger battery (9 cell or 12 cell) then you should be abele run the notebook much longer using battery power.
Furthermore the battery loses the own performance systematically and after a long time of usage you will have to replace the battery.
However, if you want you could check the Vista Power Options in order to increase the battery working time:

But in worst case you will need a new, stronger battery

  • IPod 5th Gen not waking up and battery life effected by iPod 1.2.1 update.

So I've been waiting for an update to the iPod software hoping that enough people have complained enough about the issues the 1.2.1 software update is causing. My particular iPod is a 5th Gen 60 gig. I've been using iPod software version 1.1 for some time now. I've updated my iPod to version 1.2 & 1.2.1 on many different occasions each time having the exact same result and having to take it back to the previous software version.
After updating the iPod a few different things happen. First and most importantly the iPod consistently will not wake up after it goes to sleep. In order for me get it to come back to life I have to hard restart it using the Menu + Center buttons. It can go to sleep after I unplug it from my Mac or even after I pause a song and it will not come back without a Hard Restart.
This probably wouldn't be so bad except for the fact that it resets my ratings and even worse while the iPod is in this state of not waking up the battery drains at a rapid pace as though the iPod is using power even though its completely non responsive.
Also the iPod refuses to play any of the new games downloadable from iTunes. I've downloaded a few games such as Pac-Man etc. When I attempt to access them the iPod freezes and becomes unusable. Its still on and I can see the backlighting as well as feel the HD spinning but becomes completely unresponsive and must be Hard Reset.
So this has basically been my experience with the 1.2.x software updates. I was hoping that Apple would have an update available by now that would squash all of these bugs but they have not and so I'm posting here now in the hopes that both Apple will recognize the issue and maybe some one out there has a temporary fix for the issue.

On my 5th Gen iPod video, to wake it from hibernation, pressing the select button by itself works for me. I had concerns http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4555675#4555675 that something may be wrong because pressing play/pause won't wake it from hibernation.

  • Not getting 10 hour battery life.

I remember reading it had to be at half the capacity of the uh, ..screen..light, lol. Am I missing something else? Mine's just a smidge below half, and it only has about a 4 and a half hour battery life. Are there other settings that I need to tone down that I'm not aware of? I bought my MBP this year.

    Hi
Can you let me know how did you solve the battery problems. I was happy to have a mac with 8-9 hrs running time when compared to my earlier iBookG4 which gave 4.5 hrs till its late days.
I am having a MBP that is just 1 month old and under use since a week.
i am deeply worried when it shows 3.5 hrs after full charge. deeply disappointed.
Do lend me some helping hand.

  • Not getting the advertised battery life on Macbook Pro Retina Late 2013

Hello world, This is my first time on the forum and I finally have a question to post lol.
So I just got Macbook Pro Retina and its only like 1 month old and Ive been getting really crappy battery life.
Im only getting about 4 hours and 35 mins on a full charge not the advertised 9 hours like Apple says.
What should I do to bring it to that?

Depends on what you are using.

  • The internet is not working and poor battery life

    Hi everyone!
When I try to connect my Ipod touch(5g)  to the WiFi, it will show me the signal I'm getting but won't let me use the internet. The only way out "to fix" this software failure is to reset my Ipod. When I do this I can keep using Safari and apps. However, I'm tired of doing this in order to get the Internet back, because suddenly the Internet goes down again. Besides, I've realized that the battery's life dramatically runs out when the WiFi is on. I hoped that the issue would be solved with the newest version of IOS, but unfortunately not occurred that way. At the same time, my Ipad 2 IOS 6 has the same settings than my Ipod touch (5g) and works smoothly. I'm really dissapointed with the performance of this device. I was really excited to get one. Any suggestions?
    Thanks in Advance.

  • Computer shuts down on its own even with full battery life.

I purchased a new battery for my 13 inch aluminum MacBook. Installation was fine and dandy but even with a full charge, if I don't have my power adapter connected, the computer will shut down on its own without warning. Is there a fix for this?

    Have you reset the SMC?

  • Replacement touchscreen? 30 minute battery life?

Is it possible to replace the touchscreen on an iBook G4? And can anyone explain to me why all of a sudden my battery life is suddenly only 30 minutes? Everything was fine with the battery for the past year, and all of a sudden it only lasts 30 minutes even with a full charge. Should I just replace it? A friend told me that she had the same issue, and a replacement battery did nothing for her except cost her money . . .
    Thanks . . .

iBooks have an LCD screen, not a touchscreen. Battery life is dynamic, based upon how much you use it etc. Try calibrating the battery, running on the battery untill the machine goes to sleep with the battery down to 0% on its own using (never for sleep). Then fully recharge it. Most batteries of this type have between 300-400 cycles (number of times it can be charged and discharged) before the time it runs is very short, like you are seeing. There are a few ways to check. Frist, using an app such as Coconut Battery to see how much of a charge it holds (not the % like the OSX battery monitor tells you). Another is through system profiler (not sure if this shows in 10.3.9 or if its new in Tiger) under power, and it shows how much charge in mAh. Newer ibooks start with 4500-4400 mAh and go down from there. Coconut battery, and/or system profiler will tell you how many cycles are on the battery. The larger the number of cycles the less charge it is likely to hold.

  • Battery life of 15 Minutes after Firmware Upgrade

Now that my system has had the firmware upgrade, I dont get more than about 5 minutes of battery life.
Prior to that I was getting a good 2.5-3 hours ish.
Now, it dies after 5 minutes.
I find it suspicious that this happened immediately after the FMC firmware upgrade.
I understand that the firmware cannot be downgraded easily.
Or is there, please let me know.

Recently my battery on my 15" MacBook started reporting 75% in the OS but the system would shutdown without notice -- also, when I put the computer to sleep (sometimes for only 20 minutes) it would completely lose its charge and shut down.
This started happening after I loaded the new firmware, but I thought it was related to a failing battery, not the FW update… now I’m curious.
I purchased a new "spare" and sent the original one back to Apple for testing. The spare has not had any problems since, but it has only been a few days. I've heard nothing back on the other battery.
I’ll post back if I have any problems with the replacement.

  • 2nd Generation iPod Touch Battery Life

I'm getting about 45 minutes of battery life when watching Youtube music videos on wifi. The battery recharges completely in about an hour via any usb port, or when using a Griffin remote charger. I had hoped for 4 or 5 hours of use. Is my battery life before recharge normal, or should I push Apple for a new battery before the warranty expires?

Video takes a lot a battery because CPU working constantly and WIFI too. The only way to save a little battery life is turning down brightness as much as you can stand. Mine is set below 50% brightness and I get about the same playing some games or constant surfing the net maybe 2 hours. You won't ever see close to 4 to 5 hours unless they come up with a better battery. If you search you may find some early models claiming higher battery times. I cannot concur but I do know that many have claimed that the 3.0 update seem to hurt battery life. That could be the case, but mine from the start even with the older 2.? OS was never any better. I do agree with some that running the battery until it shuts down and then charging it is better then charging when it recommends at 20%. I have also noticed that the battery meter is not that accurate. I can get a 20% warning and a couple minutes later its back to 30% .

  • Poor 4S battery life while using apps

Most of the posts I've been following about cruddy iOS5 battery life seem to revolve around when the phone is in standby. I seem to have that mostly addressed on my phone. So my big complaint is how poor the battery life is while I'm actually using the phone. I'm coming from the 4, whose battery life wasn't really stellar, but this is by far worse.
I know they dropped the estimated battery life on WiFi from 10 hours to 9, but what I'm experiencing is worse than that. I played 10 minutes of a non-intensive game yesterday (one that wouldn't have a large battery impact on my 4), and in those 10 minutes, the battery life dropped from 75% to 69%.
As of right now (12:31), my battery life is at 22%, down from 76% at 6:30 this morning. With my 4, I would have been in the mid 50s, and I've done nothing differently than I would have a week ago. Checked my mail, read a couple of static pages in Safari, messed with the Settings a little, checked my calendar and reminders a couple of times--nothing intesive. No games, no map. I did browse the App Store for about five minutes, but... This is all standard usage sorta stuff that never would have drained half the battery life with my 4. My "usage" even shows that the phone has been inactivate for 3 out of those 6 hours.
Any suggestions on this? My standby life, while not fantastic, isn't horrific, so I think I've effectively tweaked a lot of the tweakable things (like location stuff, diagnostics, etc). But is there something I could be missing? I have the screen on auto-brightness with the slider set to just below the "gh" in "Brightness." That's where I kept it on my 4, too.
I thought I read the new battery was actually better, but this is definitely not an improvement

I have the same problem! Mine does last for about 3 - 4 hours, but that is about it! Any suggestions?

  • 40 minutes on battery, if i'm lucky

i purchased my 17" macbook pro in April 2007 and have had much success with it until a few weeks/months ago. I now cannot get more than forty minutes of battery life without my laptop being plugged in. i'm currently away at college and cannot bring my laptop to classes without bringing the power adapter as well.
i've read a couple threads that say this is either a faulty battery, or a result of version 10.4.11.
my battery information is as follows:
    Battery Power:
    System Sleep Timer (Minutes): 15
    Disk Sleep Timer (Minutes): 10
    Display Sleep Timer (Minutes): 10
    Wake On AC Change: No
    Wake On Clamshell Open: Yes
    Display Sleep Uses Dim: Yes
    Reduce Brightness: Yes
    Battery Information:
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 947
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 910
    Amperage (mA): 0
    Voltage (mV): 12454
    Cycle Count: 113
(not that i know what any of this really means)
also, it seems the battery never fully charges to 100%. or if it does, it doesn't stay there for very long, even though it is plugged in. so, do i need to upgrade my computer or get a new battery?

I have had my macbook pro since Janurary 2007. 40 minutes would be almost a miracle for me! I have tried that method several times, still having problems for a while now. My battery details:
    Manufacturer: Sony
    Device name: ASMB012
    Pack Lot Code: 0003
    PCB Lot Code: 0000
    Firmware Version: 102a
    Hardware Revision: 0400
    Cell Revision: 0303
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 1216
    Fully charged: No
    Charging: Yes
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 1454
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 99
    Battery health: Fair
    Battery Installed: Yes
    Amperage (mA): 772
    Voltage (mV): 12577
One of the things that worries me is that it has only made 99 cycles. I did the reconfiguring of the battery last night, and left it over five hours through last night, when I pressed the button on the battery this morning, four of the five green lights showed up.

  • Losing my battery life for macbook pro very fast

I charge my battery for my macbook pro retina and i keep losing battery life very fast ?
    Please help

I've done my research and could not find a decent article for my Macbook Pro Retina Mid2014.
    Review these link:
Considerations for the long life of your MacBook. Handling and environmental care tips
The tips helped me out the most compared to the other links that can be found. Not sure why your battery life isn't lasting you though. You may need to get it checked by Apple. Try the Apple Support--if you got yours new, you have 90 days free support.
Thankfully, I never had issues with the battery life but I did replace my first Macbook a few days after purchasing. Thankfully, I was still within 14 days so had it replaced by Best Buy, no question asks as long as you brought everything including receipts.
Out of curiosity, can you click on APPLE logo > About this Mac > System Report > Power
Copy & paste the Battery Information.
For some reason, I am having issues copying & pasting my information.
    Charge Information:
    Charge Remaining (mAh): 6062
    Fully Charged: No
    Charging: Yes
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 8816
    Health Information:
    Cycle Count: 4
    Amperage (mA): 4806
    Voltage (mV): 12498
I have my screen dimmed since I don't really like it too bright and I have my keyboards lights off unless it's at night and I need to see the keyboard for whatever reason. There is really no real reason for me to have the keyboard lights on anyway other than to make it looks nice. My laptop had lasted me maybe about 7+ hours (maybe even more) if I get it down really low. I've got it down to 10% the first time I used it just to see and then since then, I've been trying to charge from 30%+ and when I am streaming, I keep it plugged in.
I don't ever plan on leaving it plugged in over night or while on sleep mode for a long period of time. Never do a battery calibration since it's not necessary for the new Macbook Retinas.
    Amperage (mA): 4806
    Amperage (mA): 4806

  • IPhone 4S Sprint battery life

I was just wondering what everyone else's experience with the battery life was. What's your best standby and usage time and was it with push email on or off?

You do understand that I wasn't asking "how do I fix a battery problem," I was asking what is the best battery life that iPhone 4S users have gotten on Sprint. No need to be rude when you obviously don't even understand the question. I have not found a "Best Battery Life iPhone 4S Sprint" thread.

  • IPhone 4S shorter battery life

I belive this is a know issue currently to apple, but i just want to see if anyone is expeirencing a shorten battery life with their 4S iphone.
it seems like even when i'm not even using it, the battery % goes down fairly quickly. i uploaded a pic of my phone at the end of its charge life, and as you can see, its nearly dead at 5hr and 45min of actual use and over 6hr of standby. i was using siri, internet, imessaging, a few calls, camera, and a few apps. mostly just setting up the phone and whatnot. this is not typical in iphone battery life. in my previous iphone 4, i remember several times when i used it down to the same battery level, and it had 8-10 hours of usuage and over 12 hours of stand by.
apple better come out with an update to fix this soon. i feel like i always have to have this phone plugged in or else risk dying on me on the go.
let me know if you have simialr issues please.

Ok so after trying out this setting adjustment yesterday, i left my phone off the charger until it just about died. it lasted from from yesterday afternoon til late this morning. i was actually quite impressed. and i didnt have any signifigant disturance from the settings difference. it all preformed just as normal. minus the weather widget that i didnt really mind not seeing in the notification center. oh well. i'd rather have a long battery life than constant knowlege of the temp.
as you can see i had just over 17 hours of stand by time and 7 hours of usage. alot of that i was just sleeping so ya...i still have to check it out from morning to night to see actual daily usage. but it is istill a big improvement.
i played around with the diagnostics and traffic setting. they dont affect anything from the looks of it. and who cares about iAds seriously. i hate ads as it is. and i believe the weather app had a big part in the battery issue as well as the reported time zone setting.
hope this helps out some people out there.
