Not even starting up from install disc !!!!

After having to reformat my internal hd, I recovered from a time machine backup. But now at startup it won't go beyond the grey page with apple logo and spinning gear. Neither with internal hd nor with install disc A first timer after 17 years with macs!!

Zap the PRAM and try to start with the install disk. Details in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379

  • Won't start up from 'Install Disc'

I ran Disk Utilities because my iMac's fan kept running. Disk Utilities said I had HD problems and needed to start up from the Install Disc. I have tried holding down 'D' and tried changing the start up disk settings, even starting up pressing C and as a final go... Command-Option-P-R..... still not starting up on the install dvd. All I get is a white screen and the DVD clicks for a bit and then gives up.
I just can't seem to get past that white screen!
    Please give me a hint!
P.S. I have even tried different install DVD's!

I am having very similar problems.
iMac has worked fine for 3 years. Today, it suddenly froze while I was on the web. I had to force it down by holding down the button on the back. When I tried to start, it would just sit on the Apple icon + progress icon. Or it would get to the blue screen and then just freeze at the blue screen. No system at all.
I was able to restart in safe mode once. Things seemed to be working fine. But the second I started Safari, the progress icon came up (the one for my mouse), would never go away, and I couldn't do anything. Had to once again shut down by holding down the button on the back.
After that, it will not restart in safe mode (hangs at the apple icon or never even gets to the apple icon). It will not restart from the Install disc. Same thing, just hangs at the apple icon.
We don't use this machine for anything except browsing the web. No big programs. No games. No movies. Nada. It's so frustrating to have this problem.

  • Can't start up from install disc

When Onyx checked my start up volume it said there was a problem and I should start from my installation disc and run disc utility. I tried restarting and holding down C and it would not start from the disc. In researching support I tried resetting PRAM with no luck. I saw that with a wireless keyboard I should wait till I hear the chime before pressing C, no luck. I next tried restarting pressing option instead. It only gave me the choice of Macintosh HD not install disc.
I assume I am using the correct disc (imac Applications install DVD) as it is the only one I can find. Am I doing something wrong or is there any other suggestions?
    Thanks for any help.

    Greetings,
#1 If your getting that kind of message from Onyx make sure you have your data backed up before you do any kind of repairs. If you have an issue with the formatting of the drive (which is one of the triggers in Onyx that gives you that message) then you need to backup your data ASAP. Repairs can actually make things worse with certain kinds of drive issues. So backup now.
Are you using the install disk that came with your computer?
I assume when you put the disk in the drive, it shows up on the desktop and gives you all the contents of the disk?
If so this sounds like a keyboard issue. I would try a USB keyboard or put some REALLY fresh batteries in the your current one. Like just bought from a store that doesn't keep batteries sitting in the back for 3 months kinda fresh.
    Alternatives:
    _Put the disk in.
_Go to Apple > System Preferences > Start Up Disk
_Choose the disk here and then say restart
Once you've completed the repairs using Disk Utility from the install disk, quit the installer and you will get the option for Start Up disk. You can then choose the internal hard drive so the system boots normally (Or use the option key to use startup manager at boot to choose the internal HD).
    Hope that helps!

  • Start up from install disc

    Hello there,
I need to start my Macbook from the install disc in order to do a minor repair using disc utilities.
Can anyone tell me how to do this?
    Many thanks.
    PG Logo

OK, I've tried doing the above about a dozen times but on each and every occassion I get the option to reinstall my software.
There is an option to choose the installation disc when I choose Quit Installer but it keeps bouncing me back to installing the software from scratch.
I don't want to do this.  I just want to run a repair disc from the utilities menu.
Any ideas to how I can accomplish this?
    Many thanks

  • How can I start from install disc without shutting down Mac?

Sorry. that last post wasn't so clear. I started the computer without a password, but I think when I was trying to set my own password I may
    have re-activated the old one.
I'm afraid that if I shut it down I won't be able to restart it?- (for starting over from install discs)
    What Have I Done?
This is a hard one. Can anyone help?

Put the disk inside the slot.
    Hit the restart button.
Hold down the c key as your computer is booting.

  • Can I restore my system from install discs when DVD is not working?

Can I restore my system from install discs when DVD is not working?
There is a disc jammed in the drive and when I try to do an install in Target Firewire mode using a G5 Tower I get an error saying the software cannot be installed on this machine, before I can even select the iMac's drive. I'm using the grey software install discs that came with the iMac.
Is my only option to open up the iMac and get the jammed disc out?
    Thanks

Problem solved - I posted on the general Tiger Discussions as well.
I had the wrong machine started in Target Firewire mode.

  • Will Not Boot from Install Disc  & 4SNS/1/40000000: TG0D - Thermal Sensor?

*Will Not Boot from Install Disc*
I used the "option key" approach with the gray start up disk. At first it ejected the start up disk. Then I nudged the disk back in the machine and it showed on the screen as an option. I clicked on the start up disk image and it finally loaded.
But, it won't accept the start up disk when holding down the "C" key at restart.
    *4SNS/1/40000000: TG0D*
I did an Apple Hardware Test and received the following diagnostic:
    Version: 3A121
    Test Suite: Extended Test
    Loop Count: 2
    Result: Failed
    Failure code: 4SNS/1/40000000: TG0D
    *Thermal Sensor*
A search for the failure code 4SNS/1/40000000: TG0D brought up an Apple Discussion topic entry stating: That error code indicates a problem with a thermal sensor. It could be not working or possibly not connected. You will need to take it to Apple for repair.
Would a thermal sensor have anything to do with it not starting up when holding down the "C" key at restart? What are thermal sensor problem symptoms?
    *User File Folder Opened Up*
The machine also starts up with my user file folder opened up rather than with a blank screen as it normally should
I completed a DiskWarrior rebuild on the disk and verify disk shows it is fine.
Any suggestions on what to do next with these issues?

The answer was in your post: "You will need to take it to Apple for repair."

Can I restore my system from install discs when the DVD drive in my iMac G5 is not working?

    Thanks

You need to set up the FireWire Target Disk mode installation with the iMac as host, so that it runs its own install disk. The G5 tower should be the target, so that you are "borrowing" only its DVD drive.
Shut down the iMac. Put the iMac install disk into the G5 tower, and reboot the G5 tower into TDM by holding down the T key. Connect the FireWire cable and then restart the iMac while holding down the option key. Hopefully the iMac startup manager will see the install disk that is in the tower; if so then select it and boot from there.

  • Macbook Pro crashes while trying to boot from install disc

    I have a 2.6GHz 17" Intel C2D MacbookPro running 10.6.6
Over the last few weeks I been experiencing numerous crashes, often while watching flash video. It freezes, the screen distorts and flashes and I have to reboot holding the power button.
Most times I can't turn it back on, it just won't get past the boot up stage. I generally try and boot from the install disc and/or another computer via firewire target mode, run permissions, disc warrior etc and eventually it will boot on it's own accord.
Now it won't even boot to the install disc. (the 10.5.2 disc that came with the computer)
It just crashes, screen dims and the 4 language warning asks me to hold down the power button.
I do notice that usually when you get these crashes that the background is a solid grey. but these times it's a speckled white and grey?
Is my graphics card on the way out (or out already)
Here's the crash logs from the last 2 crashes when I've got it to boot again.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Best regards
    Jesse

On the hand, I took it in to my local apple store. They rang me back this morning and said it that I need to replace the logic board. Which apparently also comprises the video card.
Yes, thus the link to the NVIDIA issue. NVIDIA is the maker of the GPU ("video card").
The quoted me $1000! I'm pretty bummed I need to spend that much on a 2 yr old machine. You should be able to expect more life than that.
If you're content to pay the $1000, no need to ask them to run the test for the NVIDIA issue. If you're not content, I would certainly ask them. Provide the link if they're unaware of it.
My only viable option is to buy the part off eBay and put it in myself.
Or have them test for NVIDIA issue. Or ask about a depot repair for $310.

  • Can't boot from install disc

I have my new Mac Pro setup so now I turn my attention to my old one (1.1).  I wanted to reformat by boot drive and do a clean install of Snow Leopard.  So, I pulled out my install disc that came with the MP and restart with the "C" held.  It acts like it is going to work and then my grey screen turns a shade darker and I get the following message in about 3 or 4 different languages.  "Your system must be restarted.  Hold down the power key for several seconds."  Essentially I was wanting to run Disk Utility to reformat the drive and then install Snow Leopard.  Any ideas?  Thanks

I punted.  Had a newer HD sitting on the desk so I reformatted that one and switched it with my boot drive.  Held down C with Snow Leopard in and the installation has started.  Still can't figure out why I could not boot to my original install disc though.

  • Mac OSX 10.7 Not Even Starting to Download

So i got my brother's macbook pro. So the macbook air i had was going to my sister. So i erased all data and tried to download Mac OSX 10.7 with recovery Disk. So i repair disk, everything (No problems were found). And i started download, and there is a Mac OSX 10.7 install screen, with the Macintosh HD icon, and under that with a download bar. And on top of the Mac. HD says Downloading Additional components. Your computer will restart automatically. I earlier did this exact same thing on my older sister's macbook air, and the download just started instantly. only took 30-60 min. But this macbook air, well its not even starting to download. it dosent even say its downloading or how long its gonna take. It has been 15-30 min since i started downloading. And it just stays the same. It would be great if i can get this problem solved ASAP. Since my sister has to use her computer.

  • Mac wil not even start up

Hi, I have a G5 Mac that has gradually got worse and worse. Initially, I would leave my mac on for an hour or so and come back to a loud fan. Usually, I would just power it off and re-start and it would be fine. Then the other day, I strte up my Mac and got 3 beeps and then the loud fan. The computer did not even start up. I phone Mac Support who told me to disconnect everything and leave it for 2 minutes. I did this and the Mac started working. I resetted it using the 3 key funtion and it ws ok. Then the next day, the same thing happened. I tried doing what I did the previous day but this time it did not work. I am not connected to the net and only use my mac for my own itunes, and also Logic 7. Can anyone help!?????

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
The three beeps indicates a problem that the system detects during the Power On Self Test (POST). The meaning of the three beeps is "no good banks", which means that all your RAM is bad.
If you have the Apple Hardware Test (on the original software install disks), you should run the test to confirm this.
Before doing so, remove all the third party RAM, and reseat the Apple shipped RAM.

Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
      1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
      2. Restart the computer.
      3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
      4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple
          logo appears.
      5. Wait for installer to finish loading.

There's more to resolution than pixel count. Consider the pixel size on the iPhone screen in comparison to the pixel size on your forty inch HD TV.
