Not getting full Gigabit Ethernet Speed on iMac Core Duo

I am using Airport to connect to a Linksys Wireless Access Point connected to my DSL modem. I am using ethernet to connect to a 3Com OfficeConnect 8-port Gigabit switch. I have 2x 500 GB LaCie Ethernet Disk Mini's (with Gigabit interface) connected to the switch.
The lights on the switch tell me that the drives and iMac are connected at full speed, however I can transfer a 650MB .dmg file to a firewire 400 drive in 1/4 of the time it takes to transfer the same file to one of the gigabit ethernet drives.
running ifocnfig en0 returns:

I have no idea what that all means, but i do know that I am not getting gigabit ethernet speed.
Can anyone help?
Thanks

If you are transferring data via wireless then you cannot approach Gigabit Ethernet speed. 802.11g has a maximum transfer speed of 54 Mbps while 802.11n is about 130 Mbps. This is much slower than a FW400 port. Your router and switch must both be Gigabit capable and your drive must be connected to Ethernet to even hope to achieve Gigabit speeds - no wireless.

  • Lost Gigabit ethernet link on iMac Core 2 Duo

I have iMac Core 2 Duo and Linksys gigabit switch. I recently lost the ability to link at gigabit speed. I have switched and tested all cables with no problem there. I know the switch is fine because my Mac Mini still gets good gigabit link. When using automatic setting, I can get only 100baseT link. When try to manually configure to gigabit, I lose the link. I am suspecting either a hardware or driver problem has occured. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

  • Snow base station next to imac - yet not getting full strength reception?

I have my snow base station sitting about 1 foot from my imac, yet only 3 out of the four bars are dark. Meaning I'm not getting full reception? Why is this is? I can't say I notice a significant difference in internet usage, but every little bit helps. I only have a cordless 5.8 ghz phone and my Harmon Kardon soundsticks speakers on the same desk. But from what I understand, 5.8 ghz are not supposed to interfere with cordless internet.
    Any suggestions?

Duane, I've tried every channel and no improvement. The only thing I have discovered is if I hold the base station in my hand and lift it up above my head - I get full signal strength. However, if I hold it up and place it against the wall (as though I were to hang it), it drops back down to three bars.
Do you think if I got the newest airport express, my signal strength would be better? Or do you think a more insulated ethernet cable would help? Or could it be my imac airport card?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Disappointing WRT610N Gigabit Ethernet speed

I'm very disappointed with the wired Gigabit speed on this WRT610N router. I've got three high end Gigabit capable computers connected to the router via the wired interfaces and the best speed I can get is from any system to another is 38% of Gigabit maximum (~46 MBytes/s). I've tried numerous protocols (SMB, FTP, SSH) all with about the same results. This must be some hardware limit of the router.  Is there any way to increase this speed? I really don't want to buy another router just to get good quality ethernet speeds.
PS: All cables are quality CAT6.

the ethernet switch BCM53115 is used on the wrt610N
this same switch is also used on the wrt320N router.
The hardware does support jumbo frames, however linksys did not enabled this in the firmware's.

to bad we have to complane that jumbo frames is not enabled.

  • Hard drive speed for an imac core duo 2006

I have an imac core duo 17in from 2006, 1.83 ghz. The hd is about to die. Did a routine verify disk, well tried and their was a message that the disk was infected and such and that it needed to be replaced.
The hd is 7200rpm. Would a 5400rpm hd harm the computer? Would any SATA desktop hd work for this?

    Hello;
What, exactly, was the message you received about the disk.  I have never heard of any message like the one you describe.

  • Nikon Coolscan V ED and iMac Core Duo

Anybody using their Coolscan V ED, or another film or flatbed scanner, with the new iMac Core Duo? I plan purchasing the CS V ED in the very near future, but unsure whether it will work well with the new iMac.

Here is my little exchange with Nikon today...
After they referred me to the FAQ that I already read.
ME: "Thank-you for your reply but I still think you've failed to answer my question. The article you refer me to with your link is main reason I contacted you. I'd like you to escalate this issue to somebody that can answer my questions in more detail...
Which BRAND-NEW Macintosh computers are supported with the Nikon LS5000 scanners?
Does Nikon intend to support Mac? If so, then when, since all new Macintosh computers now have Intel processors?
It's already been four months of new Intel Macs, I'd expect Nikon to have at least some small idea of how much longer would before the Mac platform is again supported?
What's even more disturbing is that I only stumbled upon this issue by browsing this support forum. I was on the verge of purchasing at least four and possibly up to eight scanners and corresponding computers. That would have been a financial disaster for my company considering the lack of support and the seeming lack of concern by Nikon regarding the new Mac computers.
NOWHERE in your sales literature or the Nikon Coolscan website does it say that Macs with Intel processors are not supported. The sales literature only states that Macs require at least a G3 processor or better. Most people would read that and assume that a brand new Mac with the latest processor would be better than a G3.
Shame on Nikon for hiding this issue under the rug and not providing a prompt solution for their very loyal customers."
    NIKON: "Hello,
These days new operating system version pop up every other week.
We strive to keep our products up to date with the latest operating systems out there, and work closely with Microsoft and Apple to see that this support comes as quickly as possible.
Apple is still offering systems with the PowerPC processors, like the iBook G4, Power Book G4, and the Power Mac G5.
As of today, we do not support the new Mac systems with the Intel chipset, but this is currently being looked into. We have no other information to offer at this time.
    Thank you,
    Dave"
ME: "These days new operating system version pop up every other week." LOL- You must be thinking of Windows where there are nearly a dozen versions not counting the new Vista.
But I understand. Nikon is working on it and you have no further information. That's fine.
However, your sales literature is seriously flawed. It says that the scanner will be compatible with a G3 or better processor. If your equipment doesn't work with the newer Intel processor, then it's NOT compatible with a G3 or better; it's ONLY compatible with a G3, G4, & G5.
My complaint is that you should either make a note in your literature at least for your vendors or issue an estimated date of when you're going to fix the problem.
As I explained, this is a PRE-SALES question and your attitude towards me is troubling. I was looking to purchase between four and eight of these scanners and because of inaccurate information in YOUR brochures, I almost purchased thousands of dollars of useless computer systems.
Maybe you should forward my question up the chain of command at Nikon... to somebody that cares more about what POTENTIAL customers think.
Meanwhile, I will post this issue at dozens of Mac user forums so that others don't make a big mistake by thinking a new Nikon scanner will work on their new Mac computer system.
    NIKON: "Hello,
We certainly do care about potential customers, which is why we will not offer any software that is not ready to be released. Software development takes a very long time to finalize, and involves a huge amount of testing before it is published publicly. Our timetable for software release for this new technology is unclear at this point, and we apologize for that.
As for the product literature, it will be updated to include this new item in time, and our vendors are supplied with up to date support information on a regular basis. At the time of publication, all information on the brochures was correct and up to date.
Thank you for pointing that out, however, and I will be happy to pass your comments onto our QA team for review.
    Regards,
    Dave"
I think everyone with a Nikon Scanner who is considering the purchase of an Intel Mac or vice-versa should send Nikon a flood of complaints regarding the issue. How long can this really take them? The new Macs have been out for quite a while now.
In my experience, Nikon has excellent equipment but once they identify an issue, they do nothing to resolve it. It gets swept under until the next scanner is released.
Example: The older LS-4000 scanner had firewire communication "issues". Issues that were never fully resolved but the LS-5000 scanner is now USB-2.0

  • Can't videochat with iMac Core Duo, can with PowerBook G4

Hi everyone. My girlfriend and I live in different time zones, so we've been using iChat (me) and AIM 5.9 (her) for the last year to videochat. My PowerBook's screen died recently, so I bought an iMac Core Duo, and all of a sudden, we can't connect anymore. Here's my setup:
    20" iMac Core Duo:
    Mac OS X 10.4.5, iChat AV 3.1.4
    Connects using wireless
    No firewall
    17" PowerBook G4 1GHz:
Mac OS X 10.4.5, iChat AV (whichever version comes with 10.4.5 for PPC)
    Connects using wireless
    No firewall
    AirPort Express:
Firmware 6.3 (tested with 6.1.1 as well)
    NAT, no port forwarding
Whenever I attempt to videochat with my girlfriend using the iMac, I get an error stating "Prachi Gauriar[me] did not respond." I browsed the discussion boards here and found the testing screen names (thanks Ralph!).
With the iMac, I can connect to Mac users, including appleu3test01, appleu3test02, and friends of mine. I cannot connect to RjinWI PC via AirPort Express (same error as above). It does work when I connect my machine directly to my cable modem.
With the PowerBook, I can connect to both Mac users and RjinWI PC via AirPort Express.
Bottom line: Using the exact same setup on my PowerBook and iMac, the PowerBook works and the iMac doesn't. I suspect this has to do with the new AirPort Extreme cards that are being used in the iMacs, but I'm not sure.
Has anyone worked around this? I'm kind of avoiding setting up port forwarding on the AirPort Express, as it's troublesome and doesn't really seem to be the problem. I'm willing to do it, but I guess I just don't expect it to work, so I'm hoping someone else has another suggestion.

    Hi Rj,
It seems many people are forgetting the tweaks they made to get ichat 3 to work on Tiger on Non intels when they switch.
I would check System preferences > Quicktime and set the Streaming speed to match their download.
Next I would be concerned about iChat Add-ons that are written for PCC (non Intel) code and set iChat to Open With Rosetta in the File menu and re-start iChat
    iChatUSBCam is not ready yet.
    iGlasses is.
    Showmacster seems it is not.
Lastly I would ask how the ports are opened for iChat in the Modem (or Router) IF Port Forwarding are they pointing to the old Mac ?

  • Imac Core Duo Crashing ......A Cry For Help

I received my eagerly awaited iMac core duo 17' 160gb. I took it out of the box and it work away fine. When I was installing Norton Anti Virus the installer quit before the full install was complete. I then restarted the iMac and the welcome to OS X progress bar completes and after that all that appears is a blue screen. I do have mouse movement but no login window appears. I have tried reinstalling the OS X software from the software restore disc that came with the iMac but this did not fix the problem. I then opened disk utilty on the the software restore disk and did what first aid was available on this disk, but again no fix. I tried booting from a Disk Warrior bootable disk but this disk will not boot. Through total desperation I opened disk utilty on the restore disk and went to intialise the drive, but the drive will not erase.
All suggestions of a fix or any assistance in fixing this issue would be greatly appreciated. To say that I an frustrated, stressed and demented over this would be a understatement.
    Thanks in Advance
    The Celtictiger

Last time I installed Anti-Virus on one of my Mac's. It was a terrible experience on my G5. Not to say AntiVirus is bad to install, but currently there is absolutely no reason to install one.
Really... don't waste money or cpu cycles on antivirus until there is a reason, right now there is this golden halo that protects mac from viruses. I really don't know why mac's rarely if ever have a virus, but I really don't question it either.

  • Microphone and iSight on iMac Core Duo

I am planning to buy a 20" iMac Core Duo and would appreciate hearing about users experience with the built-in mic and iSight. Specifically:
    1. I've had problems with PC mics not picking up people speaking unless they have the mic very close to their mouths (1-3 inches). Does the built-in mic on the iMac work well for someone talking at normal volume and at typical distance from the screen - eg sitting at a desk? Can it pick up speech from further away - eg roughly 3-5 feet from the mic?
    2. What is the advantage of buying the USB iSight camera over the built-in iSight camera aside from the ability to move the camera around? Picture quality? Or is there some other advantage?
    Thanks.

When it comes to the mic it picks up EVERYTHING. I sit about 2 feet from my iMac and I have no problems when I have audio chats with other people. I have had people talk from over ten feet away and it comes in clear enough. Its safe to say the mic won't be an issue. As for the camera apple claimed it should be slightly better than the external firewire iSight. I never owned the older one so I wouldn't really know. The only advantage to the built in one is there are no extra cables dangling around and you don't have to go out and spend the extra $120. In terms of moving the camera around, I haven't had any trouble in getting it to point where I need it to, unless you need it to point at the screen. The computer turns, and tilts easy enough so its really not an issue.

  • Printer recommendations for iMAc Core Duo

Greetings! I need a recommendation from anyone who is successfully using a multi function printer with an iMac Core Duo. I am returning an EPSON CX5800f because the scanning driver does not work. The printer works great but the scanner does not. Any success stories? Thanks Billy D

Hello, again! I am back. I returned the EPSON today and I am looking at an HP OfficeJet 7310 for printing, faxing, and scannng on my iMac Core Duo running OS 10.4.6. Any one with good or bad experiences with the 7310? I received an email back from HP saying that the 7310 would work with Intel Macs but I see no such indication on their web site driver download page. Plus HP has not said that the scanning driver for the 7310 would work with the iMac Core Duo. Any comments? Thanks!

  • Snow Leopard on a 1.83 White iMac Core Duo w/ GMA 950 Integrated Graphics?

Hi. My parent's computer is an older, white iMac with a GMA 950 integrated graphics. Currently it's running Tiger and it runs very well.
However, I am in town for a short bit and was thinking about updating their system while I'm here. Does the iMac 1.83 with integrated graphics run Snow Leopard very well? Or should I just leave Tiger on it?

Anyone with a 1.83 iMac Core Duo with integrated graphics (NOT the ATX 128 mb graphics) running Snow Leopard?

  • Screen unevenness on iMac Core Duo 20. What to do?

    Hi Guys,
I got my first iMac Core Duo 20 last Thursday. Everything is beautiful except the screen, which had pretty bad screen unevenness at the two bottom corners. I took it back today and exchanged it for a new one. But it seems this new one is even worse. It's so bad that when I try to play a widescreen video, the entire bottom black bar appears to be light grey.
I am now a little afraid to get another 20 and experience the same problem. Is the 17 inch iMac better in this regard? My girlfriend's iMac G5 20 doesn't have this problem at all. Is this maybe just a bad batch I ran into? I know some uneveness is unavoidable on consumer LCD panels but what I saw on these two iMacs were just too impossible to live with. iMac Core Duo 20 owners, what are your experiences?
    Thank you all in advance!

It is under warrantee, take it back until you get what you have paid for. Have them test a new one in the store before you take it home.
BTW, mine has worked great from day one!

  • I have installed Lion on an iMac Core duo by mistake - how do I rectify..?

I have installed Lion on an iMac Core Duo, via firewire from an iMac i7.
The Core Duo now goes to grey screen, folder with "?", then the "prohibited" sign for a 30 secs and then turns off,
(I now realise Lion is 64bit and the core duo only supports 32bit...).
The core duo will chime but will not boot off the original install disk or mount as a fire wire target disk.
How do I wipe Lion and reinstall Leopard...?

    Sounds like hardware error.
Maybe the target-mode did something bad to the EFI, like fed it 210 proof "Everclear" ...
Try a diferent USB keyboard ...
Last resort for me before Genius Bar is either SMC Reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964) and/or PRAM reset (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.7/en/mh26871.html).
I am out of ideas if the resets cannot bring back "C" boot.

  • What do ya think? Buy a iMac Core Duo or...............

What do ya think? Buy a iMac Core Duo 20" now or wait longer for the newer intel chips to come out and just be happy with my 17" G5 iMac?

If there is nothing wrong with your current machine, then why upgrade just for the sake of upgrading?
I have a rev B iMac G5, and am happy with it. A couple of weeks ago I got an iMac CD --- not to upgrade my current system, but to supplement it, as my little design studio is expanding and requires a second unit. Sure, the intel version is a bit faster---but not by much. Not enough to really make me consider trading in my other iMac,the G5,for a Duo Core.
So if you're perfectly happy with the G5 you have now, why rush into trading it in when there is a lot of life left in it yet. Think about it: the rev Bs aren't even a year old!
