Not Holding Preferences

Every time my computer is re-started (either from restart or from being off) the preferences do not hold and the icons and shuffled to a different place on the desktop. This has been going on since I installed my new MacPro in December but I can't stand it anymore. The most notable is the view goes from list to icon and the dates get changed from not using the relevant date to using it.
Does anyone have a clue?

Well, it's now May and we have been busy at work and haven't had time to post on this issue anymore. I uninstalled all 3rd party plugins but to no avail. I am still having this same issue. I have also tried all of the above mentioned. The only thing that I haven't done yet (and may do this weekend) is uninstall/reinstall..... Anyone else having this issue?

  • Help! CS6 not holding preferences

I have CS6 8.0.1 running on an iMac with OSX 10.8.2. We just bought both the iMac and CS6 about a month or so ago and ever since then I haven't been able to get CS6 to keep the preference when I shut down my system for the weekend or if InDesign crashes. It keeps my personal work spaces but every Monday morning I have to go into my preferences panel and put everything back to where I want it (units of measure, bleed prefs, spell check etc..). I have been setting my prefs just like on older versions of CS but to no avail and haven't noticed anything wierd happening with Photoshop or Illustrator just seems to be InDesign.
Also, several times I have even had to go back and enter my serial key just to get it to open. I haven't had to do this with any other CS6 program - just InDesign.
This is the only version of CS that I have on this machine (seeing how it's new). I also run an older G5 that has all previous versions of CS (except 5 or 5.5 - we have an older iMac for those versions). I also run CS5 for my home version and have not had any problems with it.......... Help...... I have looked around online and can't really find anything that deals with this issue. Any help would be great.
    Have a blessed day.

  • INDCS3 Print Presets do not hold Printer Preference Settings

We are running WinXP, INDCS3 suite. We noticed that when creating and saving a Print Preset and reloading it to another PC, the Printer preference settings (in particular) paper size and tray do not hold. We created several for staff and when they LOAD them, the printer/preferences from specific printers do not hold. We did not have this problem in CS2.
Is this simply the fact that the Print screen setting hold, but preferences (setup) for a specific printer do not?
Can anyone share any info on this?
    KPanthen, Albany, NY

I'm having a similar problem where I cannot set my printer to collate and the checkbox is grayed out in General tab.. and I know my printers are able to collate.. For some odd reason Indesign doesnt exactly read or detect the printer settings..

  • Preferences are not holding in IDCS3

if you quit out of IDCS3 the preferences are not holding.
tried resetting ctrl+opt+com+shft & replacing ID prefs but they will not hold after repeining the program?
    any sugestions?

Sounds as if maybe the installation was damaged in the crash. If it were my system, I'd get the CS5 clean tool (Adobe - Adobe CS5 Clean Script), which can also clean earlier versions, and follow the directions for uninstalling, cleaning and reinstalling.
Are you running Windows or Mac?

I set the preferences in InDesign to NOT show the welcome screen upon launch, but it will NOT hold the preferences i choose. Anyone else have any other ideas? I am about to lose my mind... I hate you ADOBE!!!

that s just the problem, that is why my level of frustration is boiling over ... I have told InDesign over and over again "Do Not Show Again" but it will just not hold the settings. It might hold it for a day or so, but then suddenly there it is again on another launch. Very very annoying.

  • My iPod Classic 120GB is clicking and not turning on. It has been charged but does not hold charge. I am not able to restore factory settings. Error code and have tried troubleshooting options without success. Thoughts?

My iPod Classic 120GB makes a clicking noise when syncing with iTunes and will not sync. It will not turn on at this time and has been charged but does not hold the charge. After trying to sync, iTunes states that iPod must be restored. Have tried to do this but not successful, I receive an error code and have done the troubleshooting steps for the error and I am still not able to sync or use my iPod. HELP?

    Hi mafiose15,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Restoring your iPod to factory settings is the best way to try and get it back to working order. You can use the instructions below to restore it:
    How to restore iPod
Verify that you have an active Internet connection, because you may need to download new versions of the iTunes and iPod Software.
Download and install the latest version of iTunes if necessary.
Open iTunes. Connect your iPod to your computer using the USB or FireWire cable that came with your iPod.
After a few moments, your iPod will appear in the Source panel in iTunes.
Select your iPod in the Source panel. You will see information about your iPod appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes window.
    Click Restore.
If you are using a Mac, you will be asked to enter an administrator’s name and password.
A progress bar will appear on the computer screen, indicating that stage one of the restore process has begun. When this stage is done, iTunes will present one of two messages with instructions specific to the iPod model you are restoring.
Disconnect iPod and connect it to iPod Power Adapter (typically applies to older iPod models).
Leave iPod connected to computer to complete restore (typically applies newer iPod models).
During stage two of the restore process, the iPod displays an Apple logo as well as a progress bar at the bottom of the display. It is critical that the iPod remain connected to the computer or iPod power adapter during this stage.
Note: The progress bar may be difficult to see, because the backlight on the iPod display may be off.
After stage two of the restore process is complete, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear. It will ask you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences, as it did when you connected your iPod for the first time.
You can find the instructions in this article:

  • Could not save Preferences because the file is locked?

Every time I launch Photoshop I have to reload third party extensions, and re-do preferences settings.
When I quit, I get a warning icon.
Could not save Preferences because the file is locked, you do not have necessary access permissions, or another program is using the file. Use the ‘Get Info’ command in the Finder to ensure the file is unlocked and you have permission to acess the file.
    Any ideas?
    thanks

Solved it after 8 hours of trying.
Hold down "Command" "option" and "shift" keys and open Photoshop. It will ask if you want to delete settings. Say Yes. You will have to reset everything but it clears the problem away instantly.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
First, when you are going to turn off or restart your Mac, you will see a box called "Reopen windows when logging back in" in the shutdown or restart window. Untick this box and see if the App Store opens automatically in the next startup.
If it starts, open System Preferences > Users and Groups > Login Items, and see if the App Store shows up. If so, remove it from this list

  • Safari 6.0.2 will not keep preferences

I tried the Mcafee antivirus for mac and uninstalled it because I didn't like it. Well since then, my homepage, toolbar buttons, search engine, and window size preferences will not hold. after non use for period of time. my preferences change to something else. I've tried reparing permissions, restarting computer and tried looking for com.apple.safari.plist but with no luck. Thought about trashing safari and reinstalling it. please some help with this.

    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. You can demote it back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:20 ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word, all lower case, with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’renot going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Lion not saving preferences

I just switched to a new retina macbook, with os 10.7. I'm having trouble with Linotype Font Explorer X not retaining its settings - previously, you could turn a font on & it would stay on. Although sometimes it does retain some of the font settings, but not all.
I've also noticed other programs occasionally not saving preferences.
Is this a known issue with Lion?

Make sure the systemprefs plist file is not locked. If it is, unlock it. If it isn't, delete it then restart.
    To find the file
    1. Make Finder active. Choose 'Go' from the menu bar, hold down the option key.
    2. Choose Library (you must have the 'option' key held down).
    3. Go to Preferences > com.apple.systemprefereces.plist
    4. Right-click (or hit 'cmd-i' on the keyboard) and choose 'Get Info'. If the 'Locked' option is ticked, untick it. Then Restart. If the 'Locked' option is not ticked, close the dialogue, remove the file to trash. Restart.
    5. What happens now is that system will restart at default system prefs. However, it should now save your new settings. To test it, just set one of the setting that you know didn't 'stick before', then restart and see if all is good.

  • "Always open in column view" does not hold

"Always open in column view" does not hold the preference when applied to my hard drive.
I select Macintosh HD and choose the column view. I go to View > Open View Options and check "Always open in column view". Then if I click on a different folder and go back to Macintosh HD, column view is retained... that is until I restart the computer.
After a restart, when I click on Macintosh HD I am back to icon view. Again I go to View > Open View Options, and somehow the preference has changed to "Always open in icon view". If I switch back to column view, the preference is retained again until I restart, then it's back to icon view.
Other folder and external drives open in column view after a restart, it is just Macintosh HD that always reverts to icon view.
Sent a bug report to Apple, but any ideas how to fix this?

install ONYX and use it to delete all .DS_Store files on your drive. every folder has one and they store the folder view settings. you seem to have some corrupt ones. also reset your finder preferences. delete the file homedirectory/library/preferences/com.apple.finder.plist. then control-option-click on finder in the dock and choose "relaunch".
try setting default views after that.
Did both suggestions and it appears to be working as expected now. Many thanks for the quick (and very useful) reply VK!

  • Tumbnails and home page not holding

for the last few days, whenever i open firefox, it does not open to my home page (i have re-set multi times) and all of my thumbnails are wrong. additionally, it will not hold a zoom out at the level i use to see my thumbnails
finally, some of the websites i visit on firefox look wrong - either size or info
    thanks

You may have zoomed the page(s) by accident.
Reset the page zoom on pages that cause problems.
    *<b>View > Zoom > Reset</b> (Ctrl/Command+0 (zero))
If you have made changes to Advanced font settings like increasing the minimum/default font size then try the default minimum setting "none" and the default font size 16 in case the current setting is causing problems.
*Firefox > Preferences > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced > Minimum Font Size (none)
Make sure that you allow pages to choose their own fonts.
*Firefox > Preferences > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced: [X] "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above"
It is better not to increase the minimum font size, but to use an extension to set the default page zoom to prevent issues with text not being displayed properly.

  • IPod Touch not holding charge

iPod touch is a little more than a year old and does not hold a charge for very long. Recently charged the device and was playing a game and within 2 hours the charge indicator was in the red zone (it needed to be charged again). Any ideas how to handle this? Charge should last multiple days not a couple of hours.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up

  • IMovie09 Not Holding Transitions

I am using iMovie09 and I notice that the particular movie I am working on does not hold its transitions. After I upload to YouTube, some (not all) transitions are gone and when I export to my desktop the transitions disappear. I closed out iMovie, opened it back up - transitions gone. Why is this happening and how can I repair it?
If it even matters, I also have iMovie HD6 on my system but I have not even tried to shift movies betweeen the two programs. I am working exclusively in iMovie09 until I learn iMovieHD6.
This problem is so frustrating. Last night I uploaded a movie to YouTube and when I played it back, I noticed some of the transitions were missing. When I looked back in iMovie they were missing there, too, so I am presently trying to put them back in but they keep disappearing.

The preference files for various versions of iMovie are as follows:
    ⇒ iMovie 3 and iMovie 4 - "com.apple.iMovie3.plist"
⇒ iMovie HD 6 - "com.apple.iMovie.plist" (I think iMovie HD [version 5] also used this file)
    ⇒ iMovie '08 - "com.apple.iMovie7.plist"
    ⇒ iMovie '09 - "com.apple.iMovie8.plist"
    ⇒ iMovie '11 - "com.apple.iMovieApp.plist"
As you will note, it's all very confusing! This is mainly due to version numbers not matching the release name, or no number being allocated. For example, the iMovie '09 file is labelled with iMovie8 because the version number is 8 (the last release being 8.0.6). However, for iMovie '11 it's simply iMovieApp (with the latest version being 9.0.4).
It's difficult to see the logic with the naming protocols, but bear in mind, no harm will come if you delete the wrong file as iMovie (whatever version) will rebuild the .plist file with the default settings when next opened. You can then change settings if desired in the iMovie menu item "iMovie>Preferences".
