Not importing JPEGs in case of  "RAW+JPEGs" files

When I import "Raws+Jpegs" from me card in to Lightroom, can I avoid importing ther JPEG's that come with the Raws, and for which I have no need?

Jimburgess suggests the following options for avoiding/eliminating JPEGs from RAW/JPEGs:
1) The obvious way to avoid importing them is to set your camera to produce RAW files only, if it's capable of doing that. I JUST PURCHASED THE SONY A700 AND I DON'T KNOW WHETHER ZOOMING ON ITS LCD WILL BE POSSIBLE WHEN I SHOOT IN RAW ONLY? IF YES? THIS WOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM.
2)Copy your images from the card to the hard disk, delete the JPEGs, then do the LR import of the RAW files AND 2) Make sure "Treat JPEG files..." is checked in LR preferences, import the RAW + JPEGs, then delete the JPEGs from LR and the disk, isolating them using filter on file type or sort by filetype.
I AIM AT IMPORTING MY RAWs IN LR IN A STRAITHFORWARD SIMPLE WAY: DIRECTLY FROM CARD INTO LR, WITH DNG CONVERSION AND BACK UP TO EXT. HD. SOLUTIONS 2&3 ARE TOO LABOUR INTENSIVE AND CAN CAUSE ALL KINDS OF MISTAKES.

  • Nikon D7100 Import using both card slots Raw + JPEG

I have a Nikon D7100 with the card slots allocated  for Raw (Slot 1) and JPEG (slot 2). When Importing I would like to convert the raw images in slot 1 to the Adobe DNG format and to have the JPEG images simply imported as JPEGs. I cannot find the correct combinations of preferences/options to make this happen. What happens today is the both images import with the second labeled as a -2 copy of the first image. Suggestions are appreciated.
    Thanks Ron K.

I found the magic combination of settings. Not only must the camera settings be set to raw (card 1) + Jpeg (card 2) but the quality needs to be set to raw + jpeg (fine, normal, or low).
This places the jpeg image on card #2 and is imported as a proper jpeg.
    Hope this helps others.

  • LR3 not able to open Olympus E5 RAW ORF files

On recently incident, I bought another Olympus E5 model. After shooting so many RAW images, I was not able to post process those raw files. I contacted Adobe for an update....what a joke, it was rejected and reply given saying that I did not register officially...wasting my time. My LR was bought legally. Never mind, I was quite upset that Adobe support reaction is not fast enough to satisfy customers' needs. I also saw in the discussion forum that other guys had the same problem. Would appreciate Adobe do something about it by giving users an quick update by next week.

I just could not understand why Adobe can't anticipate what new models will be released to market. Uh, what?
You want Adobe to /anticipate/ new models? From what companies? All of them?
So, you don't understand how Adobe may not be allowed access to what is essentially secret information by the camera vendors, all of which have their own agenda, and have them essentially synchronize their product release dates in some manner to the release dates of ACR?
How about Apple? Should they also be privy to this information? Should Aperture and ACR track the exact same release schedule?
How about if camera vendors switch their raw formats to DNG, and then they'd be compatible with the rest of the world, instead of just themselves.
You assertion that Adobe doesn't "pay attention to Olympus" is unfounded. Show your evidence that this has ever been the case.
Adobe has to do this the same way everyone else does, by waiting until the hardware is public. Then it gets added to the list, and eventually verified and the usual camera profiles tweaked and gathered up for the next available full or point release.
The fact that this happens only in a few months or weeks in most cases should have you praising Adobe for their hard work and dedication to their entire user base.
Remember, it was you who chose to buy a bleeding edge camera without checking that it was supported (or assuming it would be supported on a schedule that is convenient for you, not anyone else.) I understand that you feel you deserve this support immediately, but the world is an imperfect place, and your complaints sound more like assumed privilege than real problems.

  • What to do when Photoshop says could not import clipboard because an unexpected end-of-file was encountered

I have PC, with adobe Photoshop CC 2014 and windows 8. Every time I open Photoshop it says: could not import the clipboard because an unexpected end-of-file was encountered. If I exit the message I still cannot create files or open anything... any suggestions?

When you load Action and when you create new actions they are saved into you Photoshop Preferences into Actions Palette.psp.  This File is read when you start Photoshop.
Apple and Microsoft both like to hide important files on users.  Windows search and Apple finder will not find and show hidden files unless you change Mac and Windows setting.  I you getting the error when you start Photoshop there is a shortcut to reset preferences. Hold down Alt, Ctrl, and Shift keys (Mac: Command, Option, Shift) while starting up Photoshop you should be prompted to for an OK to delete preferences.
If this keeps happening perhaps you have a bad spot on your disk.  Loaded actions are saved into that file so they should show up in the Actions Palette when Photoshop Start Up and read that file during start up. Photoshop Writes that file when you load action sets, when you record and edit actions and most likly also when you close down Photoshop.

  • JPG´s will not import into lightroom 1.4.1 ("the file appears to be unsupported or damaged")

I have converted a collection of raw files with Autopano pro to jpgs.
When importing them into lightroom 1.4.1, part of the collection is not displayed in lightroom and the software gives me the msg "the file appears to be unsupported or damaged".
The same files open up with any other jpg supporting software.
Can anybody help me with this

I was not aware of this pano program but have downloaded a trial copy and will give it a go. I just did a set of images that PTGUI could not deal with and it looks like this program did it perfectly even without muddling with the control points. Its also dealing with 1 image where I cropped out a conflicting angle of view area.
I just imported the jpeg out of this package into LR with no problems. I edited it after import to LR with Photoshop CS3 to do a cleanup crop of the pan.
I'm very impressed with PanoPro right now. Will have to purchase. PLUS...it runs either Mac or PC!!! Solves yet another problem I've had with my conversion to Apple.

  • Anyone know why TV shows are not importing back into iTunes from my backup file?

My whole library was backed up on an external hard drive.  Something happened to my library on iTouch and everything was gone except for most recent purchases.  Also had new computer so downloaded iTunes again and went to import from my backup files.  Music imported but most movies, music videos, and all TV shows did not.  Also tried dragging files from backup folder to iTunes to copy but still did not work.  Anyone know how to fix this??

iTunes: What are the iTunes library files?
If your backup/restore includes the library files then information that isn't stored in tags, such as playlists & playlist membership, ratings, play counts etc. is preserved. Video Kind (Movie/TV Show/Music Video) is a property that isn't always stored in the tag. If you had restored the whole library (database files & media) then there would have been no need to import anything as you would have restored the database complete with all its information about your media.
See this User tip for a recommended backup strategy.

  • Aperture Raw & Jpeg import Problem

I'm on the current Aperture and face the following situation: I have a memory card containing photos shot partly as jpeg-only and partly as jpeg&raw.
No problem one should think since Aperture has the option to only import either raw or jpeg if there are more than one format per photo. Unfortunately, that is not working. If you select raw only, which I do for the raw&jpeg photos, Aperture does not import Photos which only have a jpeg-version at all.
This is not consistent with the options name and at all renders the whole import options useless in my case.
Am I missing something or is Aperture having an issue here?

I shot raw and jpeg since I was on a trip through the US and my Macbook broke so I had to use my iPad to upload the photos to my blog. Unfortunately the iPad software (iPhoto etc.) does not allow to change the resolution and with that the filesize of the photos. Uploading of hundreds of photos of more than 2 mb over public wifis on campgrounds etc is simply not possible, so I used the following workaround: Set raw+minimum jpeg size as file format and upload the small jpegs to the blog while keeping the raw on the memory card for later use.
That's why I shot both raw and jpeg and why I have photos shot as jpeg or raw only (before the laptop crash) and both raw and jpeg (after the crash) on the same memory card.
I'm Aperture user from the the very first version (when it was like hundreds of Euros), and I sadly cannot say that I'm surprised of the lack of support for non-standard workflows.
Well, so be it. Thank you for your help!

  • Bug: RAW+JPEG Pairs import setting affects movie imports

    Hi,
I want to exclude JPEG duplicates during import, but if I set RAW+JPEG Pairs to "RAW files only", then movie files are not imported. The only way I can get movie files imported is to import both RAW and JPEG. Is there a workaround for this bug?

Import the stills and movies separately and change the setting between imports.

  • Raw + JPEG : How do you view only the Camera Raw?

    Hi there,
Here's my problem.... I started importing many of my pictures (shot Camera Raw + JPEG) using the import window. Using the import window caused both the Camera Raw and the Jpeg to appear side by side in any album. Later on, I accidentally discovered that if I dragged a folder with the Raw + JPEG files into the aperture library, the Jpegs would be hidden from site. However, they would appear when I used the "export masters" command, which is exactly what I want (to see one image, but have the Jpegs hidden). I don't want to confuse and clutter things by having side by side duplicate photos in my albums. Is there any way to go back and retroactively make it so that only the camera raw pictures are displayed in a case of Raw +Jpeg? I don't want to erase the original Jpegs created by the camera either. There must be a way to do this.
Any help here would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi Cliff,
If you don't mind using Automater Actions, the following link will allow you to separate your .jpeg from your RAW files. I have not personally used/tested it because Aperture does not currently support the Nikon D80 RAW files yet. However, when they do, I will certainly give it a try. I hope this helps! Don

  • Aperture and shooting Raw+Jpeg

In camera Jpeg processing becomes better and better with each generation of cameras. One example is the dynamic range optimizer in my Sony A700. You often have a hard time to get similar results from the Raw. So for quite a lot of shots - especially the not so important ones - using just the Jpegs is a real time saver. Still it is good to have the Raw handy in case the camera processing went in the wrong direction, which still happens occasionally. With 8 or 16 GB cards it is not an issue meanwhile to shoot Raw+Jpeg. Unfortunately IMO there is no smooth Raw+Jpeg workflow within Aperture. Especially it is almost impossible to delete the Raw without loosing the Jpeg and vice versa in a managed library (see thread mentioned below).
Thus I just posted this to www.apple.com/feedback. If you think this is an important issue, that should be added in a future version of Aperture, you might sent your feedback as well:
It is nice, that Aperture already imports both pictures, if you shoot in Raw+Jpeg mode. But the further workflow of dealing with the Raw+Jpeg combo is not optimal:
The main reason to shoot Raw + Jpeg is, to save time in using the ready processed Jpegs for the less important shots or the ones, where the in-camera processing left not much to improve, but still having the safety-net of the Raw for a more advanced development, in case the picture asks for it.
So instead of showing the Raws and hiding the Jpegs by default it should be vice versa. If there is a Jpeg accompanying the Raw, the Jpeg should be displayed and the Raw should be hidden. At least you should be able to set in the preferences, whether you prefer to see the Raw or the Jpeg. If you realize while rating the picture or doing adjustments, that the Jpeg doesn't fit the bill, you should be able to give precedence to the Raw, aka showing the Raw and hiding the Jpeg.
After having finished the work, you should be able to either delete or archive the not used version (either Raw or Jpeg), without loosing any metadata or adjustments already applied to the other version.
Currently it is an extremely complex task, to get rid of the unused version. Workarounds are suggested in this thread: http://www.oreillynet.com/digitalmedia/blog/2007/09/gettingrid_of_unwanted_manage1.html

I am unfamiliar with Sony DSLRs and do not know what might make a Sony JPEG visually equal to a Sony RAW image file.
What I refer to is the dynamic range optimizer, which is based on Apical’s IRIDIX image processing engine. I think it is used in recent Nikons as well, but as I have only a Sony DSLR I mentioned this.
Basically it is a kind of highlights and shadows adjustment, but it works very well and in many cases you have a hard time to generate similar good results with your RAW processor (aka. Aperture).
However, JPEG is still a lossy image format that IMO should only be used for low end usages. RAW converted by the camera vendor's software to non-lossy formats like TIFF should generally be quite superior to JPEG.
Of cause the RAW holds more information and carefully processed often leads to better results than the in-camera JPEGs. But not every picture will be printed in poster size. And although JPEG is a lossy format, with a low compression setting the artifacts are almost undetectable at least with my DSLR.
Shooting in RAW+Jpeg mode can be a real timesaver. You look at the Jpegs firsthand, rate them, make small adjustments, if neccessary. For the majority of the pictures you can use these Jpegs even for slideshows and prints. If you step over a picture, where the in-camera processing went wrong, like oversharpened, oversaturated picture with wrong WB etc., you can easily resort to the accompanying RAW and process it to your heart's content. The only drawback with this workflow is the increased temporary storage capacitiy you need. But with today's low memory card prices, the benefits outweigh the cost by far IMHO.
That said, the reason for my post was not to discuss the benefits of a RAW+Jpeg workflow, but Aperture's issues in dealing with it.

  • Nikon D90 RAW (NEF) files imported via iPhoto are not recognized

Would appreciate your help.  Just got an iMac.  OS X 10.6.7.   Installed Aperture 3.1.2.  I shoot RAW+JPEGs.  Imported both files fine to iPhoto '11 from my old PC.  When Aperture then imported an Event from iPhoto, I  still see two versions of each shot, but Aperture calls them both JPEG.  On one version the metadata is complete, on the second some is missing (e.g., Exposure Mode, Lens).  Both are shown as 12.2 MP, no matter what.  Can't do any editing this way!  Any thoughts on what might be going on?  Many thanks!    --Bob

I just pickup a D300 and unfortunately Aperture nor iPhoto will not import the picture in the RAW format. Do you know if the RAW format will be updated in the new OS release that is to be announced?
I also contacted Nikon about the Capture NX program that came with the camera and Nikon told me that they are working with Apple to resolve the issues with there program as well.
It would be nice if the Camera venders would work with Apple before introduction to make sure the software is available to support the hardware they introduce..

  • How to import Raw + xmp files

Running OS 10.4.11 and recent 2.1.4 upgrade for Aperture. I successfully imported my images from my Nikon D300 and now have a folder on my desktop with my assistants RAW Canon D20 and D40 images with xmp sidecars.
I have updated all raw upgrades and still cannot see his images to import them out of the folder. Can anyone help me out? Does Aperture not import sidecars or recognize images with sidecars? (I have the do not import duplicates unchecked)

Where did the xmp files come from, ie. what app have they already been in?
    What is the file extension?
Can the files be recognised in preview or any other program.
Should not make a difference but have your tried moving the folder to anther location other than the desktop, I have imported many images from the desktop so would doubt this, but need to cover all bases.
Can you drag the folder from the desktop into Aperture?
Have fiels been renamed since coming from the camera?
Can you rename a single file and see if AP sees it?
Took me a few lines but I think I have the answer, given they are from a 20D and 40D are the files Canon sRAW? If so they are not compatible with Aperture!

  • Solution when iMovie or FCE will not import AVCHD files or MTS files

Problem: iMovie or FCE will not import your footage from SDHC camera with files in AVCHD structure, or cannot import .mts or .m2ht files (which you may have copied from AVCHD structure. When mounting camera, you can see the camera as disk but iMovie will not try to import footage. If you point Final Cut Express (FCE) to the file structure, it fails to recognize it as a valid file structure. (I have Canon HF10, but understand that this problem is common on many camera models, maybe camera has been turned off at the wrong moment?)
Cause: Faulty file structure on camera or disk
Soultion: Rebuild AVCHD file structure using an AVCHD editing tool. I found multiAVCHD (multiavchd.deanbg.com), which is not perfect, but will do the job. And it is freeware (possible to donate).
I would like comments about others experience - but at least this worked for me:
    - Download and install the software (Yes, you need Windows)
    - Set the right parameters: mostly default, I didn´t want any recoding. But tick off to keep the source files!
    - Select the AVCHD source (or source .mts or m2ts files) and destination
    - Start rebuilding: select output for Sony Playstation 3
    - Put the AVCHD file structure on a USB stick
    *If using iMovie:*
Start iMovie and plug the USB into the mac (virtual disk (.dmg file) or other media should work fine as well). The USB may contain other files as well, but the root of AVCHD must be named AVCHD.
iMovie recognizes the drive as a camera. All is not 100% well, as the dates for making the footage is lost, and the thumbnails are distorted if seen at all, until clicked on. But then import worked for most clips. Some clips gave an error message, but FCE was able to import these (Log&transfer).
*If using FCE:* Use Log and transfer on this file structure (need not be on external disk)
If you have a better solution - please share! I suppose there are other tools out there which may correct the file structure with less side effects and no errors.
If you go for this solution - remember the author of multiAVCHD, he will surely appreciate a donation. I guess everybody will agree that this is worth at least as much as you paid for your SDHC card.
Why a function to correct faulty file structure is not included in iMovie and FCE is beyond my understanding!
I notice many users salvage their footage by converting the .MTS files, using Handbrake etc. But I believe rebuilding the file structure is faster and with no quality reduction.

    Hi everyone,
I'm hoping someone is still subscribed to this and can help.
I have a Sony HDR-SR10. Yesterday I was able to connect it to my iMac by USB and view all the footage in the import window of iMovie (08).
Last night, to save time sorting at home, I took it to work with me and using the software that came with the camera installed on a Windows PC went through to see which files were rubbish and could be deleted before importing to speed up the transfer on to my mac.
Today, my Mac won't recognise the Camera!?!?!?!
Have I inadvertently reformatted the .MTS files or the camera itself, to windows or something? CanI change it back??
I'm currently creating a new disk image of the camera on my Mac in the vain hope that it will work and be recognised by the Mac as a camera. I can see from the progress box the following text:
    Creating Image "Sony Camcorder Media.dmg"
    =====Progress Bar=====
    Reading (WindowsFAT32 :1)...
Which is why I think I've done something seriously wrong!! .. because it mentions windows!
    HELP! HELP! HELP!
I have my entire honeymoon and the first year of my son on this camera and I want to edit with iMovie! Especially as I just paid for iLife 09 upgrade!
