Not impressed at all with the Mac Pro

I spent years of frustration using a PC and hearing Mac users telling me how they never have issues with their computers.
In January, I finally broke down and spent more than $4,000 on a Mac OS X, Version 10.5.2 with the following installed:
Processor 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Memory 4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
Perhaps I was expecting miracles, but I've had annoying issues with this computer ever since I purchased it.
For example, it now takes at least ten minutes, usually longer, to reach the log-in screen after I switched the computer on. What I usually get is a blank white screen for a very long time, in which a little globe appears after seven minutes or so. Then the screen becomes blues for a couple of minutes and finally I reach the log-in screen.
And then there are times when my keyboard doesn't work when I try to type in my password, so I have to restart it, only to go through the whole lengthy process again.
When the computer is finally up and running, many times my screen freezes up where the only thing I am able to do is move my mouse pointer around the screen. But it does not allow me to click on anything.
So I have to turn the computer off and back on again, and, of course, go through that lengthy start up phase again.
Other times, programs I am working on simply shut down. Photoshop does this. Firefox also does this.
There are other issues as well, but those are the main ones that come to mind right now.
I realize now that the Mac Hype is just that. Hype.

Sounds like my old Windoz computer
I jumped off the PC wagon a few years ago, after many frustrating crashes, virus and worm contaminations.
I tried video editing on pc's but soon gave up, frustrated by the blue screen of death and lost drivers, etc.
I got an upper end G4 dual, plugged in my Canon video camera and was capturing footage within a few minutes.
OS X Tiger was rock solid and I was happy that I switched.
Recently I moved up to Leopard and then an 8 core Mac Pro.
I found Leopard growing more sluggish as I added apps and files to the system.
Tried to repair permissions, and interrupted the process 30 minutes in, as it appeared to have hung up.
I read in some other forums of people having the same diskutil symptoms and they advised to wait out the repair process.
I ran disk utility (repair permissions) and then walked away.
It did complete, o.k
After a reboot, the system was 'perky' again.
As mentioned, repairing permissions may help your problem.
Try removing all firewire and usb hardware add ons.
Try a boot in safe mode to see if the basic OS is functioning as it should.
Run techtool to determine if there is a core or memory or other hardware problem.
I know that this may sound like a windows deja-vu and I sympathize.
If the problems are unresolved I would try a clean install on a new hard drive ( with only the original hardware configuration)((remove user installed ram, cards and drives).
If you get a satisfactory installation on a new drive and original hardware, then add your extras in stages.
Ultimately, if you are still under warranty - take it to a genius.
I hope this helps some.

No not bothered about sycing apps etc it is all about calendars and maybe notes. IN terms of how its done I just want it the easiest way and preferably so that if an entry is made on one calendar then it populates the other.
Thgius is beacuse I have my work diary on outlok, which I then link with my ical. I want to make sure that information is then shared with her.

  • Will Most Windows Peripherals work with the MAC Pro?

Im considering getting a MAC Pro... Unfortunately, I just invested on 2 PCI-E graphics cards (256 MB each)... will they work with the MAC Pro? Will apple sell me a MAC Pro with little options?

Only PCIe cards with EFI type BIOS, so no. They will work in Windows just fine, just not in OS X.
The stock configuration is fine and probably ideal anyway with the Nvidia 7300 GT, though most would recommend Radeon X1900 XT
There is only one 16x lane slot.
you might want to wait until Apple 'refreshes' the one year old Mac Pro line, either in the fall or wait until January MacWorld SF show. (eventually AMDs and Nvidia's latest offerings due later this year have a 99.999% chance of being adopted in some form).

  • Is the Apple Mac Pro RAID card (v 2.0) compatible with the Mac Pro (v. 1.1)?

    Hello,
Just wondering if any of you experts know if the Apple Mac Pro RAID card (v 2.0) is functional with the Mac Pro (v 1.1)?
I have an original Mac Pro and a new (black) Mac Pro RAID card. I would like to know if I can get any functionality.
I initially thought that the only difference was that the later RAID card did not have the same limitations on the HDs. I am aware that my original Mac Pro has a SATA II bus rather than a SATA III bus- but I am hoping this will not present any issues other than speed.
I am currently using Disk Utility for a striped software RAID (0) but would like to move to a parity hardware RAID (5); hence the purchase. If this isn't possible I'm not overly concerned as I managed to get hold of the RAID card for next to nothing so thought I would take the chance.
Any feedback would be appreciated as everything I've dug up online over the past few days has been a little inconclusive.
    Julius.

The black-substrate card requires a 2009 or later model, and works only in slot 4, which has a special connector for it there.
The blue-substrate card requires the ipass cable and connector feature in the 2008 and older models.
These cards are both showing their age, and limit drive size to 2.2TB each. Their data-backup batteries have been extremely troublesome. You should probably look at other alternatives as well.

  • What monitor best works with the MAC Pro

I'm thinking of buying a MAC PRO. What Monitor best works with a MAC Pro?

Whatever Monitor you like, exclusively. There are adapters available for everything.
Analog VGA is not a good idea. It's a Digital world. But it can be done if you want.
A TV set is not a Monitor. TV sets are for moving pictures, and may do badly with stable pictures, fine lines, parallel lines, smooth-edged text, and adjacent patches of bright colors.

  • Is there an option to go back to the regular menu bar so I don't have to select from the tab. Not happy at all with the new interface

I would like to know if I can restore the old interface. I don't like it, and rather select from a a menu instead of going to a tab to get the old menu options. I only use Firefox and not fond at all of the other browsers.
Although I am not happy with the one change, It still beats the other browsers so far.

Here are my own tips to make FF4 look like the previous version.<br><br>
    * Right click a blank part of the tab bar and click "Tabs on top" to remove the checkmark. Tabs will subsequently reappear below the search bar.<br><br>
    * Repeat the same steps, but click the top one called "Menu bar". This will reinstate the text links at the top.<br><br>
    * To rearrange the layout, repeat the same steps again and choose "Customize". A panel will open and while that remains onscreen, you can move elements like toolbars, buttons etc around and place them anywhere you wish. You can also drag anything you don't like into that panel and add anything you want by dragging it out of there.<br><br>
    * To replace the status bar at the foot of the page, install this add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/status-4-evar/
See screenshot. Both top and bottom views are FF4.

  • Can I have a list of all the compatible graphics cards with the mac pro 2010?

I'm looking a tgetting a mac pro 2010 and I heard that the radeon 5770 *****, so I'm looking at an upgrade for it. thanks

Official for a 2010 (assuming it's not too different from my 2012)
    Apple branded 5770
    Apple branded 5870
    Evga GXT680 (what i have)
    Sapphire 7950 Mac Edition
Unofficial (means it will lack a boot screen)
    Several Nvidia 650, 670, 680, ...
    Several AMD 7850, 7870, 7950, 7970, ...
It takes a bit of research on your part if you go the unofficial route.  What has been shown to work, can it be flashed for a boot screen, will it run at full speed or half speed, ...

  • Is it possible to upgrade the Mac Pro with SCSI/SAS drives?

Hi guys I am considering to move on to a Mac Pro from my old PC.
The Mac Pro enclosure is quite unique in its hard drive holders as no cables are used and all drives are connected with a plugin mechanism.
So I am curious if that will allow me to upgrade to a SCSI/SAS storage system which requires cable connections between drives and the SCSI/SAS card on the PCI-E slot. I dont know if this will be possible with the Mac Pro enclosure.
Has anyone tried to do this?
Btw is there any Ultra320 or SAS(preferably) interface card available for Mac OS X?

The connectors for SATA drives can be used with SAS drives. However, the controller needs to be SAS compatible. I have never installed a SAS drive in the Mac Pro bay to see what happens. If some one has a SAS drive and wants to try this I would be interested in the results.
My guess is that the Mac Pro would not see the drive.
Areca sells the Mac Pro PCIe bootable ARC-1680 SAS controller in several configurations. This controller allows the user to utilize SAS or SATA hard drives connected to the card. The ARC-1680x comes with two external mini SAS connectors that can support eight direct connect hard drives or up to 128 devices (in theory) when used with SAS expanders.
The ARC-1680LP has one internal mini SAS port and one external mini SAS port. I looked at the Mac Pro internal SATA connectors and they can unscrew from the frame but there is only about 1/2" of clearance in that area of the case. In addition, I would want the hot swap bays to still operate and I did not see an easy way to patch into the existing SATA connectors. It would be nice if the Mac Pro factory connectors used snap on SATA connector on the back of the backplane so that users could interface the 4 SATA bays with an internal PCie controller. However, its hard wired in the existing configuration. With the new Mac Pro PCIe RAID 5 card on the market there must be alternative connectors that allow this type of installation to work properly.
Based on the ease at which the Areca SAS controller can be added as an external using the ARC-1680x I went with that option. I am using it with eight direct connect SATA hard drives now. I plan to expand the storage by adding a SAS expander in the form of a hub or an enclosure with SAS capabilities. I have been looking at a 16 bay SAS enclosure but I am not sure how loud it will be
Details on the ARC-1680 can be found here:
    http://www.areca.com.tw/products/pcietosas1680series.htm
Its very cool to have SAS or SATA capability along with a bootable card that can support tons of hard drives and RAID levels 0, 1,1E, 3, 5, 6, 10, 30, 50, 60 or JBOD . I booted the Mac Pro with a 2TB Mac OS X 10.4.10 RAID 6 volume and ran Xbench. It shows a 400MB/sec. hard drive setup and raises the overall Xbench score substantially.
While I doubt I will boot the Mac Pro from the RAID 6 volume much, it is very cool that that function is available. This is the only PCIe host adapter I have found with boot capabilities besides Apples new $999 4 port SATA internal card. SAS has lots of expansion capabilities. Users that want pretty much unlimited hard drive connectivity will enjoy the new ARC-1680x.
    Have fun!

  • Why can I not purchase the Mac pro in the United Kingdom?

    Mac pro.

In most parts of the world, you can remove the side door with the Mac Pro 65 lb tower still running, and check whether fans are all running.
CAUTION: In the EU, the European commission has determined that you are too stupid not to put your finger in the fans, and the Mac Pro's plastic fans with pitiful 12 Volt motors are so dangerous it cannot be sold in the EU until a new model is released (possibly later this year). So this advice is not to be used in Europe.
Also, be certain that any bananas you buy are not too strongly curved -- those are illegal in Europe. Unfortunately, you will be forced to fend for yourself when using refillable Olive Oil bottles in restaurants -- they were unable to develop a consensus to ban them outright for the good of the public. So please, be extremely careful!

  • Do the Mac Pro comps come loaded with Final Cut Express 4?

I have Final cut Express 3.5 which i bought for my G5 mac. but i'm moving to a Mac Pro soon and i heard that it may not be compatible in snow leopard.
I know the Mac store includes FCE 4 with your mac pro purchase( they allow you to select between FCE , iWorks, etc) but does FCE 4 come with the mac pro if you buy in your town's mac store?

If you have a retail version of FCE3.5 and your original serial number, you can purchase an upgrade to FCE4 and save $100.

  • Can I use a USB superdrive DVD reader/writer with a mac pro?

The internal CD/DVD read/writer in my macpro (2 x 2.66 ghz dual-core xeon) broke, so I purchased an external USB superdrive, thinking I could use it as an external drive. It does nothing when plugged into the mac pro, I cant even insert a disk. It seems to not even have power.
Anyway I now see the device (superdrive) is intended for a macbook air or mac mini.
Am I toast? Is there no way I can get this thing to work with the mac pro?
I dont think I can return it, I've already discarded all the packaging.
    Thanks for any advice.

I agree it would not take a lot of time, 2 minutes perhaps for the world record holder, for me more like 10 perhaps, not including the time involved in purchasing the drive, figuring out how to recycle the old broken one that comes out, etc.
However the key point is that if I can get this drive to work, the cost will be $0, as I've already paid for it. So I would be most interested in doing that, if possible. If it's not possible, then I'll have no choice to pay $30 or however much, for a new one.

  • How diagnose the extra SATA ports on the Mac Pro (early 2008) logic board?

I have had two SSDs in an OWC multi-mount in the second optical bay, one for Lion and one for Photoshop scratch. However, I recently began having intermittent boot problems. Sometimes there wouldn't be an Apple symbol upon boot/reboot, yet sometimes there would and the computer would boot. I have not experienced any crashes, kernel panics or such.
I thought the Lion SSD was faulty so installed Mountain Lion on the scratch drive, a Mercury Electra 3G which I have recently received as a replacement from OWC due to a previously faulty SSD. However, immediately there were boot problems from that SSD.
I have a feeling there is something wrong with the two extra SATA ports on the logic board. I am now booted off the Lion SSD placed in an external USB enclosure, which works but is a bit slower (I will get a bracket to install that SSD in the ordinary internal bays).
My question is how I can diagnose the logic board generally and specifically the extra SATA ports. I have Tech Tool Pro 6. I also thought I had AHT but on the Leopard DVD 1, which came with the Mac Pro (10.5.2) and on which AHT is supposed to be there is no trace of AHT. Odd. Booting from that DVD will only bring up the Leopard installer.
Btw I do think the Electra is broken because I am unable to boot ML from it in the USB enclosure.
Grateful for any ideas how to check my logic board.
    Cheers
    /p

If you could move the drives easily to another location then you could test the drives and also - make backup images! just to be safe. SSDs and their firmware and problems are almost all too common, even this last June a large issue with SandForce which OWC uses in some/most of theirs, and I get the feeling they are usually behind in testing and sending out firmware updates.
Corsair, Crucial and Intel have all had issues since it surfaced in May.
Diagnosing a motherboard with Apple Service Diagnostic CD is one thing. Swapping out SATA cables though no. WD Lifeguard does check communication to an SATA device drive and can - but you need to see the device in Windows or their boot CD (linux I imagine). Quite good utility though maybe not for an SSD.
