Not In A Format that Quick Time understands

The tv station I work for has just gone HD with photographers shooting the Sony EX 3s. I saved a story in the .mov format and brought it home to do some editing. However, it won't open on the desk top or in Final Cut Express and gives me the above error message. Will an updated version of Quick Time solve this issue, or do I need to go surfing the internet trying to find the correct Codec? Or do I have to purchase Final Cut PRO???
Thanks, Tim

Hi(Bonjour)!
It seems that your material is encoded to XDCAM, a format supported by FCP, not FCE.

Download and install VLC Player. It plays more formats and is free and highly regarded.

Unfortunately, the error message gives no details about what codec might be missing or what it needs.
If the file can't be opened in QT, it only means you cannot use the QT "Inspector" window to check what compression formats were used to create the file. It does not mean you can't use the Finder "Information" window to check on the compression formats or use a third party media information window (e.g., like VLC which will open many compression formats not supported natively by QT) to determine what kind of data is included in the MOV wrapper. If the file cannot be opened in any app, it is usually a good sign that the file itself is corrupted.
It's a stupid error message. Apple should do better than that.
Error trapping is quite extensive but there are still many areas which require human oversight. The message is telling you that either the container has a problem (e.g., not properly terminated, non-standard, or corrupted) or that one or more of the compression formats used is not supported by your current codec component configuration or that the data was encoded using non-standard settings or preferences not supported by QT or that the fourCC code does not match the data contained in the file or that there are timecode inconsistencies, etc., etc., etc. In short there are a near infinite number of possible problems for which it would be very difficult/nearly impossible to program error trapping depending on your sourcing of content and how you process it before it reaches the player app. Think of it like trying to play a BD disc in an DVD player.
I'll call Apple support when I get a chance.
Chances are good that they will end up sending you back here. In any case, it is often a good idea to post a sample file for examination by other QT users. At the very least, they should be able to tell you if the sample file will play on other systems which would indicate whether or not the file itself is bad and under the best of circumstances whould allow them to examing the file in detail for various common problems.

Free VLC player for the Mac, check out the Icecast Radio Directory also
    http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html
And if it's copy protected then
    http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac/
If anyone is running 10.8. or later, then they might have to right or control click on the installer or app to "Open" to bypass Gatekeeper controls at least once, then it learns it's a ok to be trusted program.

Tell use what format the video is that you are trying to play.  Or post the url of the video site for others to test out for you.
Please do not type in CAPS.  It is very hard to read & is considered shouting in cyber space & not appropiate here.  We can all hear ya! No need to SHOUT!  Thank you.

What version of iPhoto are you using?
This is the the first time I have ever launched it.
Does that mean there are no photos in the library? If so move it to the Trash bin in the Dock and launch iPhoto again.
If there are photos in the library do the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
and select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Trouble getting QuickTime to run on Windows 7. Error 46: Could not load or find the Quick Time Active X control.

Trouble getting QuickTime to run on Windows 7.Installation seems to finish successfully. When can try to open it I get the following error message:
Error 46: Could not load or find the Quick Time Active X control.  I have reinstalled QuickTime and itunes several times but with no luck. Any suggestions?

    Hi Pedro d,
Yes but no! I have tried everything step by step several times. Researching Error 46 on the web is scary business!! The gangsters are out in force on this one, begging to take your money! From a couple of trusted sites I have been able to make this much clear at least for Vista users, I'm using Windows 7 but I think they relate:
"Since the issue causing the Error 46 is that QuickTime registry entries don't have the correct permissions set, the repair is to go and reset all the incorrect permissions. However, this is a long and tedious process. The SubInACL tool from Microsoft (see the link in Resources) can change the permissions as a batch. The batch is defined by a CMD file that lists all of the registry keys to be changed. Once SubInACL is installed on your computer, move the CMD file with all the registry changes into the same folder, typically C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools. Right-click the CMD file, choose "Properties," check "Run this Program in Compatibility Mode" and select "Windows Vista (Service Pack 2)" from the drop-down menu. Click "OK." Do the same for SubInACL. When you're done, double-click on the CMD file and it will run. Your error should be gone."
I don't have the expertise to do this, do you? I wish that Apple or someone would take the bull by the horns and fix this because what I've read their are a lot of people having this problem. Any thoughts on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
    Kindly,

  • Imovie video does not run on PC with quick time!!!

I have produced a video on a Mac with imovie V 9.0.8 and exported via Quicktime. I tried to view the video on a PC with quicktime 7.7.3. Unfortunately this is not possible!! A simple link to a page with a number of third party suppliers should help! I do not have time and motivation to search in the jungle of codecs and secrets to find a correct solution. I do not understand apples policy. It is the most difficult thing to make a video and find a format that can be read with current software.

What codec did you use for the export? I.e., It is most likely the video codec used for your export is causing the problem as it may not be included in the basic QT codec component package. (E.g., the Apple Intermediate Codec is only available on the Mac.)
I do not understand apples policy. It is the most difficult thing to make a video and find a format that can be read with current software.
If you exported the file for playback on a PC and selected or allowed a defaulted codec not available for the PC to be used, then the problem is self-inflected. The normal export combination would be H.264/AAC in an MOV, MP4, or M4V file container. Assuming the file was properly terminated and transferred between systems, any of these files should be playable in QT on your PC (as well as other third-party players like VLC, MPEG Streamclic, etc.)
    What can be done?
The best option would probably be to re-export the project to any format known to be compatible with your PC QT install.
