Not on disk mode but says dont disconnect???

brand new imac g5...brand new ipod....everything updated....no 3rd party apps...and my ipod is not on disk mode and if it sits for a couple hours it will eventually go back to "do not disconnect" ....why is this?

Is the iPod mounted on the desktop? Usually you will see this message whenever the iPod is connected to your computer -- you need to "eject" it just like you would any other external drive, then the message will go off and you will just see a large "charging battery" icon.
If its something else, a little more info would be helpful --it isn't clear what has been going on before you see it flash the "do not disconnect" warning.

If you are unable to get the iPod into Disk Mode to try and restore it, it's a very good indication, as mentioned in the article, that the iPod's hard drive is damaged and in need of replacement either by Apple or a third party repair company.

I've tried safe mode but I dont understand what is happening. I tried pressing the power button on and off for several times and nothing happens, I'm always stuck on an apple logo and a spinning wheel. I dont know how to get to the Partition and the DiskUtility. The Apple Logo and the Progress Indicator will continue to spin and I have literally no idea what to do. i am in desperate need of help. help me pls

    Turn it off.
Start it up again and (at the sound of the chime) press and hold the command and the R keys, hold them down until Recovery loads. When it does you will select Disk Utility and you should be on the First Aid tab when it opens, if you are not please select it. Then select the partition (in the side bar, 2nd entry on the list, see picture).
Yours is probably called Macintosh HD.
Once you have selected it go to the lower righthand corner of the First Aid dialog and press Repair Disk.
This will take 10 minutes approximately. Post back when it is finished and tell me what it says.

  • Ipod not recognized by computer or itunes when not in disk mode

My ipod nano 6th gen. recently has stopped working.  I am able to charge it for a short amount of time but have to reset the ipod everytime I go to turn it on.  I wanted to update the software but when I plug it into my comp that I have previously updated this ipod on, it says that the device is not recognized.  I followed steps on the support page and discovered that the ipod is recognized as a device and as a ipod in disk mode but when I reset the ipod back to normal mode it is once again not recognized.  I don't have a problem with my comp or itunes when I connect my iphone or ipod touch so I'm trying to figure out how to get the ipod to work.  any suggestions.

I have kind of the same problem with my 60gb ipod with colour display.
everything was working fine up until last sunday when i plugged into my laptop and I got the 'folder with exclamation mark' icon
i reset it and put it into disk mode but when i connect it to my laptop it doesnt turn up on itunes or windows. occasionally it will appear then disappear again so i can't restore it to factory settings.
i did manage to get it to appear in itunes and click on the restore button but i got the message that it couldnt be restored and there was a problem with the 'firmware' but before i could try anything else it disappeard from itunes again.
i have been told that the problem may be with my USB cable so i will buy another one at the weekend but if that doesnt work does anyone else have any ideas as i have tried nearly everything.
i personally think my ipod caught me looking at my friends new 80gb video ipod and got jealous!!!!!

  • 30 gig in disk mode, but no show

Okay, so I have my old 30 gig in disk mode, but it seems to be nowhere to be found. I'm running all the latest versions of OSX and iTunes. And, before this happened, my iPod stopped working until I purchased the dual usb/firewire connector (meaning it would charge via firewire but connect via usb). Right now, however, it shows that it is in disc mode with the "Do Not Disconnect" message. If I reset, I get the folder with the exclamation point. Any ideas how to reformat or even get the Mac (or even a PC) to recognize it?

even though i have a dual cable just like you and mine works fine. try using the regular one. go to the system profiler and see if it recognizes that there is a USB plugged in the computer. This randomly happened to my first iPod 60 GB. so i took it to a local apple dealer and they couldn't figure out anything wrong with it (they had no other customers waiting and just worked with it for less than 5 minutes). so they just replaced it with a new one.

  • IPod classic 5th gen. with sad face goes into disk mode but wont register in itunes

I have an iPod classic 5th gen. A while ago it stopped working and the sad faced iPod started showing up. i've tried putting it into disk mode but when i do it wont pop up into itunes like it should and as soon as i unplug it the sad face appears again. is there anyway to fix it or is it done?

There is a pretty comprehensive post written by another forum member which is about the sad iPod icon. You may find it useful.
The Sad iPod/folder and ! icon.
Btw, there's no such thing as a "4th generation 20gb classic." Your iPod is a 4th gen and not an iPod classic which is a completely different model.

Disk mode can be used for accessing the device as an external hard drive, e.g. to use to copy files from one computer to another.

  • IPOD nano in DISK MODE, but still not RECOGNIZED

My Ipod Nano has stopped being recognized by my PC (Windows XP OS). After reading the discussion topics here I had a hope that after switching it to DISK MODE, the PC might recognize my Nano. However, it still doesn't. I hope the Wizrds out here rectify the problem I am facing with my IPod.

Try restoring your iPod (in Disk Mode) from somebody else's computer. (This might replace everything on it with their music for the time being, but you already seem willing to wipe your iPod, so it should be OK.) If it works, then try to do the same thing again on yours. But the problem in this case would be not with your iPod but with your computer. Try reinstalling iTunes. If that doesn't work, then the issue is probably a more general one with your Windows installation and it may be difficult to find help here.
If on the other hand your iPod won't restore in disk mode from ANY computer, then the only option I see remaining is to take it in for servicing.

  • Ipod with sad face and will not stay in disk mode but hdd works

    Hi,
I've got a problem with my ipod and i've tried everything to fix it and nothing works.
So basically after my ipod gave me the sad face I tried putting it into disk mode and that worked successfully! However after I plugged it to my computer, it would (after a few moments and windows detects something being plugged in) it resets itself and gives me the sad face again and following that a sign comes up saying Please Wait Very Low Battery.
I know its not a low battery problem since during disk mode the battery is full.
Other strange things is that in Diagnostics mode the HDSpecs section just shows just a bunch on meaningless characters and numbers for each of the specs listed. I thought that this may have just meant I had a broken harddrive so i got one of those ipod harddrive to IDE converters and plugged by ipod harddrive in (yes i now have opened the ipod). Strangely enough the ipod hard drive appears on my computer and works beautifully and i can read and write to the drive.
I went though the forums and found someone with the exact same problem and was solved:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7244984&#7244984
However the person never said how they solved it except that they followed the guide posted by Mitch 751 which I also tried to no success.
Does anyone have any ideas what else I can try?
    Cheers,
    Victor
