Not open new tab (empty) when clicking on a .pdf link that can't be read in FF (no plug-in for pdf)

When I click on a pdf file that should be able to be open in Firefox (with plug-in), FF open a new empty tab and ask to open or save the file.
I would like that in case of FF not being able to open the pdf file, it skips the "open empty tab" part and directly go to "open/save" part.
Is there a way, server side, to tell FF to do so or is there only only client side solution ?
NB : In case that pdf can be open in FF, or any other browser, it should still be open in the browser and not be asking to "open/save", the point is only the empty tab.

Is it possible you were using the Tab Mix Plus extension on your Windows system? Tab Mix Plus has a feature to force bookmarks into a new tab automatically when you left-click instead of the default behavior of opening in the same tab.

I'm on Firefox 3.6.21, and I got this problem today after a Greasemonkey update (To version 0.9.10, apparently).
Disabling Greasemonkey solved the problem, and re-enabling it reproduced the problem (middle-clicking links to open in new tab did not work, merely highlighted the link).
I should also note that while Greasemonkey was enabled and the bug was affecting me, Ctrl+Click to open links in new tabs was also broken.

EDIT: It appears this is a known incompatibility/conflict bug between current versions of Greasemonkey and Tab Mix Plus. Read more here:

EDIT 2: GREASEMONKEY HAS NOW BEEN UPDATED with a workaround to fix the problem. Go to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/greasemonkey/versions/ to install the update manually. I can press ctrl for a new tab but otherwise a new tab does not open. I actually need help regarding this new Synch which apparently will be in Firefox automatically in an upcoming version so I am asking how that will synch with people who use LastPass-of course because I use this very successfully and really am not eager to change the set up that I have in place at this time.
I have read through endless FAQ trying to find anyone else who has this question or concern but have found nothing. Can you please tell me how that service will get along with LastPass which does basically the same thing as Synch-it is probably spelled wrong as it looks wrong to me but if I click back to where this issue began, I will lose all of this question so please respond for the upcoming service synch.

Uninstall the Ask toolbar and it should work again. There is a compatibility issue with the Ask toolbar and Firefox that prevents new tabs from being opened.
There are a couple of places to check for the Ask toolbar:

Cannot access in browser PDF files unless blank box is closed and then website address is clicked on again in browser address bar and page reloaded.

I reinstalled Windows on my machine and started over a couple of weeks ago.
When my desktop started up I didn’t have Acrobat installed and clicked on a pdf file and the open with xxx dialogue box came open.
I chose a different program as Acrobat wasn’t installed yet so it associated pdf files with another program.
Later Installed Acrobat and couldn’t associate the pdf file with acrobat so I went into Folder Options and manually associated PDF files with Acrobat.
Ever since then I get the error when something is downloaded and opened in the browser.
Works fine everywhere else and when I cancel the blank error, highlight the web address and press enter to reload it works 90% of the time.

I've been working on this all day!!! I've tried everything I know of and can't get it to load either. Sounds like lots of people are having problems. Here is what I have so far...I have uninstalled EVERYTHING on my pc from apple and reinstalled itunes to no avail. I have tried all sorts of things I've read as fixes online. NOTHING has worked. Here is something interesting that i have noticed though. my main pc (which is the one i have always managed my itunes account with for years) is a 32 bit system running windows 7. Yesterday I installed itunes for the first time on my new netbook which is a 64 bit (windows 7) system and it works just fine. i have three other laptops (all window 7) in my household that are all 64 bit operating systems and ALL have updated to 10.5 and THEY ALL work fine. this is FOUR 64 bit systems ALL updated w/10.5 that work and ONE that is a 32 bit that will not. Can't get any help from apple. their suppot *****! I want to get someone on the **** phone or a live chat but cant. *** APPLE????? please let mw know if you find SOMETHING i can try next. I'm out of ideas and patience!

That issue can be caused by an extension that isn't working properly.
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

If you have set Google to be your homepage, that should be the first one to appear. Are you seeing the Firefox home page when you open new tabs? New tabs should be blank by default. The only reason I've seen Firefox open new tabs with Firefox data on it is after an upgrade of the product.
