Not playing back .mov

I have 10.8.5 osX and QT 10.2 -
I have exported .mov from iPhoto into a folder, and when I open in QT I get this..
QuickTime Player can't open "IMG_0917-2.MOV" because the movie's file format isn't recognized. I clicked on the "tell me more" button to find out what formats QT supports, and of course, .mov is one of them. So why is it not letting me playback? I've tried several movies, and made sure they are not just images and are really .mov files (my initial mistake - i didn't export from iphoto as "original")..
I'm sure this has been asked but I can't find any threads that give me an answer.,.
Thanking you! Bec

Sorry! I'm an "Early to bed. Early to rise." type of person. Just got up, noted you additional comments, and will now try to respond to some of the topics you mentioned...
Ok. I'm not sure but it was taken on an iPhone 3, exported into iphoto then exported out of iphoto into a photo as "original file type".
Any "source" video taken on an iPhone should be QT compatible with all Apple QT based apps—including QT X player, QT 7 player, GarageBand, iMovie, QuickLook previewer, etc. If it isn't, then the workflow used to move, sync, copy, or otherwise "export" the video content from the source device to the target application would normally be suspected of causing playback problems or file corruption. However, since you later indicated the source files do play, it looks as if you don't have a problem here. Do, however, wish to point out that checking of the "source" video file managed by iPhoto is the first logical step in tracing iPhoto "export" problems.
Basically I'm trying to clean up my iphoto, becuase I have used it with albums (rather than smart albums or events), and it still has every photo ever imported into it, including ones deleted and not used in the albums, as I have tried several things to delete these unused/unwanted pics, but there are thousands of them.
Not sure if you are aware that the deletion of files in iPhoto is a "multi-stage" process. This means that iPhoto "protects" its content by layering user options. For instance, deleting a photo or video in iPhoto merely "marks" it for deletion. To physically delete a file from iPhoto, you must also use the "Empty Trash" option to complete the file deletion process. Further, the deletion of "modified" file content does not normally delete the "original" source file—rather, it merely deletes the "reference" file created by iPhoto as a particular edited "version" of the original file.
If I'd realised earlier I would have nipped it in the bud but we are way past going thru every single pic to see if it's been used.. So the easiest thing to do is export all the pics / vids from the albums (ie photos to keep) and erase everything from iphoto, and reimport.
I would normally trash the files currently "marked for deletion" and see what is left. That is, if after trashing files you find the "original" versions of files you want deleted are still present, then you would need to re-mark and trash them also to physically remove them from iPhoto. Of course, you can also do it your way but this means you have to spend the time and waste additional file space saving the "keeper" files to a target location before deleting the entire iPhoto library and then re-importing the "keepers." To me, your way seems like more work.
I wanted to make sure these movies work before deleting the originals. Maybe there is a different way to do all this?
There are hundreds of short videos, so to reexport each one into a different format is going to be very time consuming. Any suggestions?
Well, I can't fault your caution here. All too often users seem to make the deletions and only later determine that their workflow corrupted their supossedly "saved" standalone backup files. Actually, there are many ways to "backup" your library. These may include but are not limited to...
1) Backing up the entire library to a secondary target drive using the built-in create library option and then perform your deletions on one library retaining the other as a comlete and total backup library.
2) Opening the iPhoto library at the Finder level and copying the "Master" (or "Year within the Master" or "Month within a Year within the Master" or "Calendar date within a Month within a Year within the Master") folder to a target location where you can delete all unwanted content normally using either Finder and/or app file preview/player/delete options.
3) Of course, the easiest way to create a "Keeper" file folder might be to simply create the target folder on a drive, select the files in the iPhoto window that you wish to keep, and simply "drag" them to the target folder. Then you can delete the original library content and re-import the "Keeper" folder collection of files. (Just remember that what you "drag," whether the original version of the file or its modified copy version, is what gets copied to the target location.)
4) Use the essentially same workflow described in paragraph 3 but use the built-in copy/paste user option to copy one or more iPhoto selected files to a target folder.
There are too many options and variations on options to get more specific here. Basically, you need to determine which type of a workflow is most comfortable for you to use and go with it.

While there may be a maximum number of files that can be selected simultaneously for copy to a target location, I have yet to surpass it. (My guess would be 65,535 might be a reasonable minimum limit and I don't have that many files.)
So! It will playback the original file.. so all i have to do is work out how to separate the used pics and videos from the unused ones.. which is a different matter.
Depending on how many files you wish to copy in a single batch, I would recommend the following:
1) Open iPhoto.
2) Select the window in which you wish to work. For instance, if you wish to be able to select from all files sequentially or non-sequentially, open the "Photos" window. If you wish to work from a sub-set of files, open a general "Events", "Faces", "Places", or sub element like a particular event or album.
3) Select the files (all, sequential, non-sequential, or individual) you want to keep in either their original or modified form. (I normally select only the originals for backup and select modified versions when moving specific file versions to another application for use in their modified form.)
4) Drag or copy the selected files to your target folder (or application).
Hope this may help.

  • Quicktime.mov not playing back from website

    iWeb 3.0.4
I downloaded three .MOV to my site. One is playing back ok, the other two are only displaying the QuickTime symbol. I did empty the browser cache, but to no avail. Did check with server and the .MOV files are in the html folder, but not playing back. I also re-uploaded the questionable .MOV files, but it still does not let me open the files on my site. site name : bodoholst.com
    thanks in advance

All three movies play OK for me.
The pages are slow to load as this method of adding them to the pages requires the movie file to download with the web page.
If you are happy to depend on viewers having the QuickTime plugin, this is a better way...

So that everyone can see your movies you really need to have flash fallback since there's still a lot of people around who don't have the QT plugin installed...

  • QuickTime movie made in QuickTime 7 audio not playing back in qt 10

I made a qt using qt 7 pro, H.264 with the AAC audio compressor and that qt will not play back audio in QuickTime 10 which is what my client has on his computer.

The point being here is that I rendered out a movie in QuickTime pro 7 and the audio isn't being resolved in QuickTime 10, even on my own computer.
Does the audio play correctly in the QT 7 Player? Have you determined if this is a playback or a conversion problem? I asked about the source file since some source compression formats will not convert the audio using QT 7 Pro. In a similar manner, some AAC data rate and sampling rate combinations are not supported on the Mac which is why QT is programmed to disallow their use. (Unfortunately, I do not know what would happen if a source file using such audio settings were to be used as a source for a QT 7 Pro conversion.)
How is this possible and should I just remove qt10 altogether?
As already indicated, there are a number of "normal" problems that could give these results. In addition, QT changes made as part of the most recent Lion OS update seem to have had adverse effects on QT 7 Pro features (as evidenced by the loss of the "loop" playback feature and "green screen" problems on some platforms). As to the removal of QT 10, the embedded structures cannot be removed without corrupting the operating system. And, while the QT X player can be removed/deleted, why bother since you can just as easily opt not to use it for manual playback and restoring it, should you later change your mind, may present a problem.
I am a professional editor, have been working on Macs since 1992 (Avid and FCP7) and have never had a compatibility problem like this before within the Mac environment.
Have you made any recent changes to your normal work flow that might account for this problem and is the problem consistently repeatable?

  • Sound Does not Play Back

I am playing recorded video from a Sony HDR-HC1 through the DV out and capturing in on location. All goes well(except for some red frame video) during capture, good video and audio. I captured three times. On one occasion the audio played back. The other two it did not. Audio will not play back in PP CS3. The file is an AVI T2. The same clips play back fine in Edius 3.6 with good sound.
Any tips on what is wrong?
    Kent

Hey There and Welcome to the mac forum!!!!
Could it be possible that you moved or even trashed the audio files you were using? If so then they get trashed in imovie to.
Next time, transform the movie into a Quicktime movie (once you are completely done the project). Once you have done this, you can move or even trash any of the elements of your movie (even the footage) but this will make your actual imovie project useless (The Quicktime one will be fine).
    I hope this helps,

  • Insert a clip into a new sequence, the clip will not play back

Macbookpro 8G ram twin 2.5 Intel, 1333 Mhz
I am an experienced editor coming over from AVID.  This is my second project attempt in Premiere. First was fine. I imported clips that live on my hard drive.  When I make a clip selection, mark the in and out and "insert into a new sequence, the sequence will not play back un less I render it first. I am talking about one (1) shot maybe 3 seconds long.  I have done no other edits in the sequence and have added no effects but there is an effect icon on the clip in the sequence,  This can't be right. It is not the way it worked for my first test project.  It would take 40 hours to edit a 60 second spot…  What has happened here?
Footage is 1080p 24fps.  Short with a digital DSLR and Files are the same (.mov)  as in the first project,

I have exactly the same problem. All of a sudden preview window is not working properly. In some projects it only plays audio with gray screen, in some it doesn't plays at all or plays audio from another projects. Sometimes preview gets frozen with the first frame in the project. I can however play video from Event Library, but without any sound. When I create new project and drag clips from Library, it plays with gray screen and again without sound. Restarting iMovie or Mac is no help. I'm using iMovie 8.0.6
Waiting for help desparatly, thank you

  • Images in iMovie not playing back

I added an image to a project I had already been working on.  I then added an audio file to all of the images. When I hit the play button the image I added does not show in the playback but instead an image two away and then it plays the second and third fine. This happened to two images I inserted in the project.
I noticed that the recently added images in iphoto when I click the camera icon have a green check mark in the corner.  What does that mean and is that stopping them from showing in the playback?
    I would appreciate any help.

Fixed the issue myself. Here's a step-by-step because I what found online pertaining to this issue were not clear on how to fix it.  (Note that this is what I did to fix the problems, some of the steps might not be strictly necessary.)
How to get movies to start playing back again in iMovie '09:
    1.) Close iMovie.
2.) Delete contents of the "iMovie Cache" folder for the event that is not playing back correctly.
             - There are were two files "Cache.mov" and "Cache.plist", I deleted both.
    3.) Restart iMovie
This appeared to force the program to generate new files and start working correctly.  From what I read on other postings it was probably caused by the program not closing properly, which I seem to recall it crashing on me or my wife a while ago.
    @ Bengt Wärleby
I appreciate you taking the time to post a reply, but please try to read the question before you do so in the future.  I had said that files imported from the same camera work correctly (i.e. the same file type/codec), so the problem is obviously not a codec issue.  Furthermore, .mov is the extension for the QuickTime File Format (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.mov).

  • Imovie not playing back video from one event

Select vidoes in iMovie '09 won't play back for me.  All I get is a black box, no audio, no video.  The issue appears to be confined to videos from one particular event.  The preview shows up just fine, but no actual video.
The videos were taken and imported from the same Sony camera as the videos that do work.  They also play back fine in Quicktime.  The format is .mov.  Any ideas?

  • DVD Drive will not play ANY movies

I seem to have the standard drive for the 15 inch MacBook Pro (bought less than one year ago), but it simply will not play ANY movie DVD I've tried. It whirrs and whirrs but nothing happens. I've tried multiple movies and none have worked. Yet it works fine with software cd's and loading on of new programs, and burned CDs with pictures display just fine. I checked the System info on the drive and notice that the last line - which is media - had a 'no' next to it. Is it not turned on or programmed to play movies??? If so, how do I activate it? Thanks for any help.

My MBP plays DVD and says no also, so that is not it. Sounds broken to me. Call Applecare and I do hope you paid for the 3 year Applecare. Did it EVER play DVDs?

  • Youtube videos are not playing back

Youtube videos are not playing back in Safari 5.1.7. I've also checked this in Firefox 16.0.2.
    I am running OS 10.6.8.
Why is this happening? I need this capabilitiy for my work efforts.
    Thanks (in advance)!

I'm having similar problems to you all.  Chrome and Firefox will play YT videos back perfectly.  But for some reason certain users' entire channels that were working fine in Safari on Thhursday 1st Nov 2012 had stopped working by the next day!  After upgrading Flash and resetting the cache etc it was a bit better but still some not working.  I then downloaded the 6.0.2 update (again after a bit of aggro as some error message kept popping up, then after a while it worked ok).  Now still some videos refuse to play in Safari.  Latest FF browser seems OK and not too slow.  I have always liked Safari though and am a bit annoyed that I've had to to make FF my default as it's a bit ugly.  It may be a YT problem rather than Apple.  Once upon a time in the hazy crazy days of Tiger and Leopard I had no Apple problems.  Now lots of very minor but basic issues keep popping up!

  • Slow motion not playing back after 8.02

I have iPhone 6 plus.  I shot a couple of slow-motion videos when device had iOS 8.0.  I just noticed that these videos are not playing back in slow-mo after the upgrade to iOS 8.02.  Anybody else having this problem?  Any suggestions?

i noticed this too. Definitely something happened during an update. Whether it be 8.02 or IG update or something.
Before if I wanted to upload a vid on instagram with slow mo,  I did where I want the slow mo part in default photos app, then it would apply in IG automatically, now IG or any app just plays the vid at regular speeds.
