Not printing booklets

I used to be able to print BOOKLETS on my Laserjet pro 400 color mfp m475dw printer. Now I cannot seem to be able to find that function anymore. I tried following the '300 - 400' manual very closely, but the diagrams and buttons I'm being shown in the manual, do not match any that I'm seeing on my display. My computer, right now, is running Windows 8.1.I would be very grateful for your assistance.Best regardsElton-the-one

Print Booklet was introduced with CS3 and remains unchanged in CS4. CS2 used a plugin called InBooklet SE which is no longer available because the vendor was purchased by Quark.
The major difference is that InBooklet allowed you to impose and create a new file, but it was very buggy and often caused problems. Print Booklet only allows you to impose and print, so if you want a screen proof you must print to PDF and open that.
An alternative is to use one of the imposition scripts that are available, but the one I use is not capable of dealing with cross-spine elements, and I suspect from your post that you have background images that span the spreads.

  • Print Booklet suddenly not working properly

I am working with InDesign CS3 in OS X 10.5. Up until this week, the Print Booklet function always worked fine for me (I only use it for generating PDFs with printer spreads). Now, however, files that printed properly in the past are generating PDFs of the wrong page size and orientation, and sometimes with the wrong scaling as well. The previews in Print Booklet still look fine, but the PDFs generated are not.
One thing that stands out in particular is that, in the past, I could take care of all the settings in the Print Settings dialogue box - printer, page size, orientation, etc. Now, if I want the right page size, I have to go into the Page Setup box and choose the page size from there. If I am dealing with an uncommon page size (which can easily be set in the Print Settings box), the Page Setup box does not have that option (or it requires establishing a new custom page size). Furthermore, even when I can get the right page size, the page orientation in the resulting PDF is wrong and the pages need to be rotated, where they didn't before.
It seems like the problem may have something to do with InDesign's communication with the Adobe PDF printer. This same week, I found that the software for my normal paper printer could not communicate with the printer, and I had to reinstall the printer driver, which took care of the problem. Maybe there is something similar I need to do here, with regards to the Adobe PDF printer driver? Or, perhaps there is a system file that might be missing or needs to be deleted and replaced? Please help - thanks!

You updated to 10.5.5 didn't you? This is a problem with a CUPS file which has been discussed on the forums. Basically replacing the 10.5.5 version with one from 10.5.4 will fix the problem. See also this

  • CS4 InDesign not printing correctly on HP1320 LaserJet for 2-sided booklets

I'm trying to print chapters in a book, using 2-sided printing from CS4 InDesign (V 6.0.4) to an HP1320 LaserJet printer using an iMac computer. This used to work with CS InDesign (V 3.0.1) using a Dell PC and the same printer. The page prints on both sides, but is limited to 8.5 inches of the 11 in side.  [My pages are 5 1/2 by 8 1/2 with two pages on one side of the page; when finished, the book is 5 1/2" by 8.5".] I've tried lots of combinations of page orientation in both the InDesign File/Print Booklet/Print Settings.../Setup and in the File/Print Booklet/Print Settings.../Printer... but nothing seems to solve this. Any suggestions?  Thanks.

You need to be sure the print dialog is set up to print the pages in landscape orientation.
    -=-=-=-=-
I'd be happy to try. Here are the steps I take, but you should realize that I've done this so many times over the past several days (up to a couple of weeks) that I try different things each time.
I've got a couple of book projects that use similar formats. One is a textbook and the second is a daily log I keep (not always "daily"). Both are printed and bound to become books that are on the order of 400 to 500 pages and are 8.5" by 5.5" in size.  So, I have a file I want to print and I want it to come out with side-by-side 5.5 x 8.5" pages (two on each side of an 8 1/2 by 11 inch sheet of paper (i.e., two sided printing).
In InDesign, I click on File, Print Booklet..., and here is what the window looks like: [see attached file "Screen shot 2009-12-02 at 5.51.44 PM.pgn.]
To get it to show "Booklet Type: 2-up Saddle Stitch," I had to click on "Print Settings" at the bottom and select "Setup" and then "Orientation: landscape (2nd from the left on the choice of four orientations)."  I also usually go to "Page Setup..." and make sure I chose "Orientation: landscape."
Then I go to the "Printer..." button at the bottom of the "Print" window and select things so it looks like this:  [see attached file "Screen shot 2009-12-02 at 5.57.44 PM.pgn.]
To get this, I had to click on the "Layout" option and then "Booklet Printing." That automatically selected "Two-Sided" printing.
As far as choices go, I think that is it.
The page that printed most recently with those settings came out with four (not two) pages on each side of the page. Further, the four pages that printed on the back side of the sheet of paper were upside down relative to those on the front side. This may be the result of using "2-up Saddle Stitch" but I'm not sure of that.
But here is the problem that has really been bugging me: the pages on one side of the paper don't go as far toward the margin as they should. Here is one example of low-res pictures of the front of the page that printed.
The page shows two full "pages" along the left top and right top, but along the left and right bottom pages, only about half of the pages printed.  The back side of the sheet of paper was similar, with only half of the "pages" showing for two of the four pages on this side.
So, I hope this is enough information for you. I'd be happy to provide more if needed. And thank you for even attempting to help. I've been struggling with this issue for a couple of weeks (I'm retired, so I sure don't spend full time on it, but I sure have spent hours at it, all to no avail).

  • Booklet not printing in spreads in CS6

Print booklet's spread option is grayed out and the 12-page document is print as 6 pages even though the preview shows pages 12 and 1 as a spread. The final pdf file from Distiller is a 6-page document with pg 12 as as the first page and pg 1 is missing. Any hint as to why this is happening. How can I get the booklet to print as 6 spreads. HELP!!!

Our old print driver had the bookletizing setting built in, so if the booklet feature was part of CS5, I never noticed because I didn't use it.
So does that mean you have a new printer driver?
It's not rare that some printers don't get along well with ID, especially when using advanced features. The best workaround has always been to export PDF and print that instead. Frankly, I tend to do that even though my printer works just fine with ID. In my experience it usually ends up being faster to process the PDF in the printer than to process the .indd file.

  • CS5 Print Booklet is not generating a booklet. How can I work around this?

I have updated to CS5 and now when I use  "print Booklet" for my 12 page inDesign document, no pdf is produced. In CS3, the pdf appeared with no problem, ready to take to the printer, all spreads ready for saddle stitch printing on ledger paper. I can produce a pdf of the spreads as one reads it, or a pdf of each 8 1/2 x 11 page saparately, just not the booklet. I have read of people using a script to make a booklet in CS5. It seems that Adobe should fix this problem, and in the meanwhile make it clear where to get the script and how to use it.
I'm using Snow Leopard on a Mac, Snow Leopard and CS5 both new to me at the same time. I think CS3 was better, perhaps, but I no longer have it.
    All help will be appreciated.

  • Creating booklets in CS4 (not printing)

You could make a booklet out of CS2 through the "Print booklet" feature. It would create a second file that was booked correctly so you could proof any of the background graphics.

  • Why does "Print Booklet" not print all the files in book?

My new Indesign CS4 will not let me do what I was able to do easily with Pagemaker 6 and Indesign CS2.  When I go to “Print Booklet”, the program will not print the entire book, but only whatever file is check marked at the bottom of the WINDOW tab on the Menu Bar. I have tried with the files in the BOOK Menu selected and not selected. No difference. I have tried every way I can think of to add and link the files indicated in the Book Menu to the actual files. Each time the same. I have reinstalled the program. Still the same. I am using a Mac PowerBook G4 with OS X 10.4.11.  Your ideas and help will be greatly appreciated..........Richard

Sorry, Print Booklet simply isn't designed to be used with multiple files. You'll notice it isn't available in the Book Panel menu.
You could export the entire book to PDF, then place the PDF in a new document and use Print Booklet to print that.

  • Officejet pro 8500A Plus Word 2010 not printing in booklet any more

I have been successfully printing booklet mode - the reason for buying the printer. Now I cannot set the option in the printer properties of Word 2010
I am setting the radio button to booklet and it immediately unsets :-O
If it unsets how can I print booklet
In the properties for the printer I have set it to print booklet by default - but it shows the pages per sheet radio button checked each time.
But it works for PDF files...
What is not being set correctly?

NOTE:    The printer driver does not support manual duplexing. Two-sided printing requires an HP Automatic Two-sided Printing Accessory to be installed on the device

  • InDesign 6 not allowing me to "print booklet" to custom paper size...

I had to switch to a mac over the weekend (my windows CPU's power supply went out), causing me to have to download CS6 trial versions of programs I had grown accustomed to from CS5.1 on windows. Anyways, doing my magazine for class in InDesign 6 and I got to the part where I need to "print booklet", and turn it into a postscript file. I did everything the way I was supposed to and then look at the PDF after distilling, and only half of the page shows. The PPD option where you can choose "Adobe PDF" is not showing any other option than "Device Independent". I can't customize the size of the paper from anything except 8 1/2 x 11 which is too small. I need 11x14. I don't know what to do and I've been trying to find solutions... I definitely do not want to have to re-do the whole thing because of this simple little thing, and I am running out of time (only have about 2-3hrs left). Please help... Thanks

You need to download and install the ADPDF9.PPD file if you want to print to PDF using Print Booklet. You can find more in this article: Creating PostScript Files in Snow Leopard for Older Print Workflows | InDesignSecrets. Another alternative is to use a script to impose your booklet and then export to PDF for printing, or you may want to look at the IDImposer plugin, normall $49, but offered free until the end of this month: Overview | IDImposer

  • Print booklet in inDesign not printing correctly

I have been having issues with the print booklet feature of inDesign CS6. I am doing a half letter layout. the pages are laid out as the end user would see them. when I click on print booklet and set all of the print settings, everything is fine. the preview show the spreads correctly. example (the back cover and front cover are on one spread with the back being on the left). problem is, once I print, the back cover is replaced by a blank page and the back is then placed on spread 3. page 1 is then placed where the blank inside cover should be.   I mad a 12 page blank document and placed only page numbers on the pages and then printed booklet. the preview was correct and the printed output was also correct. as soon as I add any other elements to the pages, it no longer prints correctly.
this is extremely frustrating. I have wasted a day and a half trying to troubleshoot and get this to work. At this point I am going to lay out the pages the way I want them to print and then rearange them to view properly in PDF, either that or go back to using Quark. anybody know what may be causing this.

Wow, never would have thought you would have that option twice. That seemed to do the trick! Thank you so much. I owe you one!

  • CS5 Print Booklet not working correctly - double sided issues

    Hi,
So I'm very familiar with Print Booklet and have done many books in the past double-sided, but somehow in the last few months, my InDesign is having trouble with page sequence when printing booklets. Instead of printing the odd spreads how it should ... I'm getting every other spread (within the 'odd only' or 'even only'). So for instance, in this one signature... I was supposed to get a print of the spread with pages 11 and 14, followed by the center of the signature which contained pages 12 and 13 on the left and right, respectively. What happened was 12/13 never printed but the spread before it did print, and the spread before THAT one didn't print. In the "preview" part on Print Booklet, it looks normal. It's just when it actually goes to print, it has a problem.
I've tried printing with my printer and on multiple others — happens everytime.
I'm trying to print a 24 page saddle-stitch booklet, double sided. I normally would print the odds first, flip the prints, and then print the evens. I have "print blank pages" and "print blank printer spreads" checked and everything seems to be normal... except it just keeps printing every other "odd" spread instead of all the odd spreads.
I'm going to be printing a 200+pg book soon with a lot of signatures and really don't want to have to manually organize them all... so any help would be gladly appreciated.
    my settings
I don't know if any of this even makes any sense... let me know. I'll do my best to explain it better. THANK YOU!

Your screen captures look correct, so the next step would be to go into the print driver (Click the Printer button, I believe) and check there to see if you've got it set to skip pages. After that, try trashing your prefs: Replace Your Preferences

  • Print Booklet Bleed Issue in CS6

When I try to print the file as a booklet, the left and right bleeding of some pages does not appear on themselves; however, they appear on the next spread.
The spread goes like this, with some objects exceeding the pages for bleeding:
When I print as a booklet, the preview goes like this:
Front and Back Covers; their left and right bleed do not show...
...but instead, they reach the next spread. These blue stripes in the left and right are the continuation of the covers above.
And it keeps happening with other pages that need bleeding. The top and bottom bleed are fine.
I tried changing many options in the print booklet dialogue box, even in the printer setup itself.
It may be that I have built the spreads wrong too I am still thinking if these 2 and 21 pages are necessary to exist in the file, since they are only blank. (though I had tried deleting them too, and the issue still exist)
I looked everywhere for a solution, maybe I don't know the right terms to search for this problem...
I also noticed that everything goes well while using the Export (to PDF) command.
The reason I'm using the booklet option is to have a document with the pages in an order ready for print and staples,
while maintaining the 1 to 22 sequence to use in the web.
It would be terrible creating another document and change the page numbers manually.
Hope somebody knows how to make it.

    Hi Mikey!
My bad, sorry: actually there're 24 pages counting the covers and the 2 blank pages. (1-22 is the numbering for the inside content).
Even changing the page numbers won't correct the bleed.
Deciding to do something new, I isolated the pages, which first were Facing Pages.
After making a end with the spreads, the Booklet option seemed to function normally with the document bleed.
The problem is that I still would have to change the margins of the pages manually,
since they are not spreads anymore and now there's no inside/outside margins, but left/right instead.
If I could understand why I can't print the spreads as booklet would be so much better...

  • How do I "Print Booklet" with just odd pages and even pages for duplexing . . options disabled

I have InDesign CS5.5 on a Windows 7 64-bit machine hooked to a Xerox 7750 printer.  I have created a 8.5x11 portrait document and trying to create a booklet on 12x18 sheets.
I need to print duplex manually and so I need to print just the odd spreads and then the even spreads.
I have printed to Adobe PDF and printed from my created PDF file and have it working, but I want to know why InDesign won't let me do it.  When I click "File > Print Booklet > Print Settings" then it shows the Print Dialog box with the Pages section, which includes the Sequence that normally would allow me to do Odd Pages or Even Pages, but it is disabled.  Why?  I can define Print Presets and I can choose Odd Pages, but when I choose that in the Preset box it does not show anything, everything is still disabled.
Anybody have any idea of why it is disabled?  Is it my printer driver?

I too was very frustrated after upgrading to indesign cs5.5 and the latest LION OS on my new MAC.  I missed the odd/even page selection in the print dialog box within Indesign.  I tried about everything and found little of value in various forums.  But I did find a workable solution that makes since in terms of Apple's OS.
My objective is to "impose" my document and also end up with a file that I can just print again and again without "ripping" in the InDesign Print Booklet Dialog.
Here is the quick version of what to do.  I am not including every little step with pictures. =)  (I can if there is interest.)
    1. create your document
    2. Print Booklet
    3. At the first dialog box, just ignore the printer in print preset (you will come back to this) and go to the 2-up perfect bound option and select 16 page signatures.  This will impose 2-up on 4 physical pieces of paper printed both sides.  So 16 of your document pages printed duplex on 4 physical sheets of paper.  It would be nice to then just select the printer and scaling, etc. and the option to print even pages, flip over and then print odd pages but that ain't an option.  If you have different needs, do the math and input the correct numbers before proceeding
    4. Click on Print Settings  to pull up a second dialog box.
    5. Select for Printer PostScript File (not your printer)  Also select for PPD your printer or Adobe PDF 9 if you have that installed.  Don't obsess on this just pick your Printer for the PPD.
    6. Select 1 copy and All Pages while in the General Tab
    7. Select the Setup Tab Here is where you put in the actual physical paper size that you are going to print your document on. Don't scale to fit.  You must do this.  If you feel the need, check out all the tabs and options but for now, you are just trying to get an output file.  You probably do want to select CENTER for page position in this same setup tab.
    8. Hit OK whcih will return you to the original dialog.  Check when you return to be sure that at the top Printer is populated with PostScript File.  Click on Print and give the thing a name and a location to save at the resulting dialog.
Breathe as you are almost home.  You have sucessfully created a file that can be called up again and again without opening InDesign. (albeit, a postscript file but not a problem)
    Now,
    1. Double click on this new file (it will have a .ps extention) or just open it in your PREVIEW (apple supplied utility)   Preview is where you accomplish the even and odd page objective.
    2. Preview will show you a short progress dialog while it rips this postscript file into a PDF.
    3. Click on PRINT
    4. Select your printer, page range, select the Paper Size (again not document size  but  the size sheet that you are printing the 2-up , imposed (booklet) document on. If not in the selection dialog, then use the custom option to create it (custom paper size) and give it a name.
    5. Click on SCALE and insert 100% in place of the weird number that it will insert for you.  You will then see your document correctly displayed in the sidebar preview window.
    6.  OK, now what you have been waiting for. Click on the box that says Preview (the active window) and select Paper Handling from the drop-down and select from Pages to Print the coveted odd or even page selection.  You can also do other things that should have been back at the InDesign print dialog but are now gone.  Explore. Enjoy.
    7.  You will have to work out your own work flow about reverse or no reverse order and how to flip, etc. But you will be working with something predictable at this point.
    8.  Since this has been ripped into a PDF , you might as well Click on the PDF button and click on save as a PDF at this point to save that postscript to PDF rip.   Also print using PREVIEW for the newly created PDF file next time as you will not have to learn a bunch of new dialogs and be frustrated all over again.
I am now back in business printing the book blocks for my handbound journals.
