Not putting mbp to sleep when closing screen, possible?

Dear All,
I was wondering whether it is possible to close the screen without putting the MacBook Pro to sleep but instead having applications running or listening to music etc. Is it possible to adjust the settings for that? I haven't found anything in System Preferences, yet.
I would appreciate your help,
Jerome

Ya my blue tooth mouse works well for waking it up into clamshell mode, even though that's not what I was shooting for. I just want to turn of the silly mouse...LOL
The problem is with the clamshell, unless you have an external monitor attached you can not visually see anything to restart what ever application stopped when you closed the lid.

  • Computer does not put itself to sleep when used in lid-closed mode

Hi. I'm having a small problem when using my macbook pro with the LED display, lid closed and with external keyboard and mouse. If I leave the computer unattended, the display goes to sleep at the time specified in system settings under energy saver. The computer, however, does not go to sleep - the white power indicator remains solid and noises for new email etc can still be heard.
I should probably just try to remember to put it to sleep manually but I keep forgetting. Does anybody know what settings I need to adjust?

I tried cycling the old battery many times, and the computer would still shut down unexpectedly instead of going to sleep when it ran out of power. I got a free replacement from the supplier [http://myworld.ebay.com/cbkusaelectronics>, but I have cycled this new battery twice now, and it still does not go to sleep when it runs out of power. The capacity of the battery is fine (4.9 Ah), and the timing calibration seems fine as well. I have two older batteries from NewerTech and they allow sleep every time, so I think my computer is fine. Can anyone enlighten me about the cause of this problem? Does my battery lack some 'sleep battery' cell in it for use after the other 4 cells discharge? Or does my battery lack a chip that communicates with the computer? Is there any hope of getting this battery to support sleep when discharged?
Has anyone else seen this problem consistently in a brand of battery? Does anyone have a recommendation for a cheaper battery that does not exhibit this problem? I have been happy with NewerTech, but they cost over $130.
(I only paid $44 plus $10 shipping, so I probably got what I paid for. It is maybe still worth it to have a high capacity battery for such a low cost, but I can't rely upon it in those last few minutes or I may lose work.)

  • Closing top does not put MBP in sleep

    Hi there,
My MBP does not auto-sleep when I close the top. any clues how to fix it?
    Cheers.

It has been suggested elsewhere that you have to be careful not to bump the MPB until the sleep light comes on (pulses), because the sudden motion detector can prevent sleep from fully engaging. Safe sleep can take about 5 seconds to completely transact.
Has also been reported that unplugging usb peripherals will interrupt the process of sleep engaging.

  • Macbook pro not turning on after SMC reset. I have the following problem. Yesterday I noticed that my mbp 2011does not sleep when closing the screen. smc due loud fan and an X on battery symbol

Yesterday I noticed that my mbp 2011 dos not sleep when closing the screen cover. Today I Turner my laptop in. However the fan was working loudly and stayed loud. After Start I noticed an X on Battery symbol. Clicking on it, it showed 'no battery.' I found out that a potential solution for this problem was SMC reset. I also noticed that the leds on magsafe was not lightning. Despite this I tried to execute the smc reset as described on apple support site. Switching off, plugin the magsafe connector, pushed the buttons shift + alt+ ctrl + power. Then i pushed the power button, but my mbp is not turning on. I pushed several times on the power button but nothing works. The magsafe is also dark meaning the leds not lightning. Can anyone here help me on this ?

Problem solved by my own. But do not how :) magsafe again working and the laptop tooo

  • Macbook Pro 8.2 does not sleep when closing the led.

I have a macbook pro 8.2. When I close the led, it sleeps then wakes up immediately. I can't put it to sleep by closing the led becaus it will wakes up again. So, If I want to put it to sleep, I have to choose the sleep option from apple menu. I am affraid that it is a hardware problem, something wrong in the sensors.

Since this is a 8.2 MBP it is fairly new, I have an 8.2, it has still got a lot of the original 1 year warranty left on it.
Just how do you know it is not going to sleep when you close the lid? Does the monitor not turn off? Does the sleep light on the front not come one and then slowly go out and come on again (flash slowly) when you close the lid?
If the screen doesn't turn off or the sleep light doesn't come on and then flash slowly you need to take it in to get it fixed ASAP.
If those things are happening, the screen turns off and the sleep light comes on then goes out then back on slowly, the MBP is actually in sleep mode. Even if once you open the lid it comes right back to life wvwn if it doesn't ask for your password. This is a setting in system preferences.

  • PowerBook G4 not going to sleep when closed???

My 15-inch 1.67 GHz PowerBook doesn't go to sleep when closed. The Apple on the back on the display stays lit and the display doesn't go dark either. Anyone have any ideas???

Check that your sleep magnet hasn't fallen. Take something made of steel like a paperclip, and see if it sticks to the outside of the case above the Apple logo. If not, the magnet inside may have moved. When the cover is closed, the magnet is directly over and affects the trackpad area. If you have a magnet (like on your refrigerator), wave it over the trackpad and it should go to sleep.

  • Energy saver will not put Mac to sleep

I have a new Intel Mac mini. I am running off an external drive (MiniStack2). The drive was formatted and then had data transferred from old G4. The internal drive, when used as a start-up disk, functions fine. The external drive will not enter sleep mode (screen turns off, but not HD). The G4 had similar problem. Not sure why one drive as start-up drive and other does not. I have quit all active processes and tried every set of options - the machine will not put HD to sleep.
Is there a plist or other file I must reload? I am certain this is a software issue. Problem in 10.4.7 and 10.4.8 (and 10.4.x on G4)

  • KDE: Laptop only sleeps when closing lid every other time

    Hello all,
I'm running KDE 4.14.1 on an older Toshiba Satellite laptop. In the KDE System Settings, I've told it to sleep when closing the lid and this works - but strangely only every other time I close the lid. It will work once, then I open the lid and it powers up just fine. Then I close it again and the screen just turns off but the laptop stays fully powered.
Any ideas what might be going on? It consistently only sleeps every other time when I close the lid (the other times it just turns the screen off).

    Take a look at /etc/systemd/logind.conf
Is systemd also trying to manage this?

  • HT3964 IMac, Mountain Lion- overheating and putting itself to sleep when it gets too hot.

I've tried re-setting the SMC on my intel core i5-2.66 GHz Imac 27" to stop the fan from running all the time.  It started when I first upgraded to snow lepeard. I thought maybe Moutnain Lion would help this issue,  but now it's overheating and putting itself to sleep when it gets too hot.  Any suggestions?  This happens after about two hours of working.  Using Adobe Suite only and still overheats.

First off, there is nothing wrong with the fans running all of the time, they are the Macs cooling system and they would not run under normal conditions if the Mac didn't need them to run. So unless they are racing and your Mac sounds like a jet ready for take off, the fans are just doing their job.
That said, I think Apple's idea of how mcuh and how fast they should run does not always match the iMac's real needs. I, like many others, use SMC Fan Control and I set the speed at which my Mac's fans run.

  • MBP Won't sleep when the screen/lid closes...

I have had my MBP for almost a year now and my AppleCare is about to expire...
Recently when I close the screen the computer will continue to run and operate as if it was never closed and will not sleep. I took it to the Apple store and they did an SMC reset which sorta helped for about 5 hours. Now it goes to sleep but will take almost a minute at times or won't sleep at all. I was told I would have to send my computer out for a couple weeks but I can't do without a computer. Please help me fix this or help me convince Apple to give me a new computer.

Run /Utilities/Console and click 'All Messages' top left then close the lid and try and put it to sleep.
If no dice open the lid and look at the Console messages - in particular look for lines including "sleepimage" and see what it says ?
I suspect there's not enough space left on your hard drive, or it badly fragmented, and the RAM sleep image can't be created or stored properly ...

  • MBP won't sleep when closed?

    Hey Guys,
I'm not sure what's up (as I didn't have this problem with 10.4.7) but ever since I updated to 4.8, when I close the lid on my MBP, the front light won't pulse at all.
I can here the HD and stuff still spinning etc.
If I have iTunes playing, it continues to play when closed (and it never did with 4.7)
I checked that spotlight isn't indexing. I close all my programs and still it wont sleep.
When I put it in its case to go to school, its really warm (since it's been on) and my battery life is dying because of it.
I don't know what's up with it, or what I can do to fix it? I checked the energysaver settings and they're all right. I've tried resetting PMU and repairing permissions aswell.
    Any ideas/suggestions?
    Thanks in advanced.

See this thread for complete information on the files to delete. That fix is temporary. The recent firmware update for the MBP fixed the problem permanently (so far) for me, but not for others apparently.
