Not reading cds/dvds
Hi well its almost a year that i have had my mac mini (april 08 will b a year) and i noticed that the other day when i inserted a movie dvd to watch it was making weird loud noises. so i thought nothing of it and ejected it, then i tried putting it back in and it played for about 10 minutes then froze. after this my macmini wont play any dvds what so ever..it will just spit them out after a few seconds i do have to admit that i am an avid movie watcher and i do watch alot of movies on my computer...can it be that i have overused the dvd player in the mini? if so does the warranty cover this? i hope so...also i have tried to play some cds.. and its weird cause it will only read a few not many the ones it doesn't read it spits it out after about a minute and itunes wont open..i really hope someone can really help me on this...thanks!!!!
Hi qnzdiablita-
Optical drives, like other hardware, do fail. If yours has it will be covered under warranty.
I would suggest trying an optical drive cleaning kit first as this is often all that is necessary.

I'm on an older (late 2009) iMac, just installed Maverick a few days ago, but the problem preceeds this. Basically, my computer will not read CDs or DVDs. Any disc I put into the computer, I hear the whirring noise as if it's reading the disc, but it immediately winds down. It will repeat trying to read the disc 2 or 3 more times, then just spit the disc out.
I tried spraying some compressed air into the slot, and it still won't read most CDs or DVDs, but now when I insert an MP3 CD that my boss had burned for me, the window pops up for when you insert a blank CD, so the drive is reading blank (or previously burned CDs AS blank), but not DVDs or normal CDs (for example, it spit out both a video game installation disc and a movie DVD).
I made sure that if i go to Finder > Preferences > General that "CDs, DVDs and iPods" is checked, and everything looks normal in System Preferences > CDs & DVDs.
Anyone have any ideas?Another help source (if you haven't already done so).
Go to your OS Help Menu. In the search field type dvd
Click on all the troubleshooting topics & Support Articles that pertain to your issue.
You can also do the same in Disk Utility. Open same up.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.
This will bring up the Help Menu.

DVD drive light on Satellite M50 does not turning OFF, drive not reading CDs/DVDs
Hello,
I have a Satellite M50-mx5 with a Mat****a DVD drive. When I insert CDs or DVDs, the drive starts up, spins the CD around (the light is blinking)...but a few seconds later, the drive stops spinning, but the DVD drive light remains on.
Windows also thinks that the DVD drive is empty.
I also tried to boot Windows from CD when the computer starts up, but with no success either.
Any ideas to what's wrong? Is my DVD drive broken?
Thanks
EliHi
Sorry to said it but in my opinion the drive is dead and only the replacement can helps to get the drive functionality back.
But be aware that not every drive is supported and can be used with the notebook!
Take a look into the user manual. Sometimes the compatible drives are listed.
And its useful to known that all parts can be ordered from the ASP in your country.
have a nice weekend ;) -
CD/DVD drive does not read all DVD formats and regions
Hi
My Teac-dw-224e-a does not read all DVDs formats and regions.
It does read CDs but no DVDs at all.
Not DVD-R and not even regular DVDs. I have checked the region of the DVD.
I have reinstalled the driver and also tried with different software.
What can I do?
Please help!Hi
It is possible that your DVD drive has wrong region settings.
In this case it is not able to watch all possible DVD movies from different regions.
Of course you can change the settings 4 times. But after this changing the settings are fixed and its not possible to change it anymore. -
" DVD RW Drive " is not reading / writing DVD. It can read only CD.
HP Pavilion dv6-3140se Entertainment Notebook PC

Product Number: XS065EA
" DVD RW Drive " is not reading / writing DVD.
The same DVD can be read on my frnds laptop.
Corresponding drivers r up to date.. I even tried uninstall and then restart and then let my laptop install the required driver automatically. I've tried everything I could find on some forums.
I was told to delete " Upper & Lower filters ". I didnt find Lower filter so I had to delete only "Upper Filter".
Plz assist me..
I will be waiting for ur kind reply.
Thank u so much. The upper and lower filter thing only applies if the drive is not showing up at all in the Device Manager. If it appears as a drive and will perform any function at all, then it is likely a hardware issue. One way you can be sure is to try to boot from a bootable DVD such as a Windows 7 install Disk. If the computer will not boot from such a disk then it is apparent the hardware is defective, not the Windows software because the problem exists even before Windows loads.
The drive has multiple lasers and it is possible for one to go out but not the others. The drive is easily replaced. See below:
This eBay seller ships worldwide. You would have to transplant your plastic drive face but that is very easy to do:

HT2801 My DVD drive is not reading any DVD
My iMac's DVD drive is not reading any DVD. Whenever I am inserting any DVD, The DVD icon is not appearing and the DVD is ejected out after sometime. I have also tried the troubleshooting steps given in the apple support site by restting the SMC but my iMac still does not read any DVD. What do I do now? Somebody help me.
Could try purchasing a commercially available, retail dry brush CD/DVD lens cleaning system disc. These can sometimes revive a malfunctioning optical disc drive.

MBP Optical Drive not reading cds or dvds + LaunchDaemons not in Library
Late 2008 MBP, 4gb, ram 2.66ghz, Mountain Lion 10.8.4
Hey this is my first time using this forum but I'm not computer illiterate so please don't waste my time!
My optical (disk) drive in my Late 2008 MBP is not reading dvds or cds.
I repaired disk permissions to no avail.
I had read another thread on this issue saying I could opene my library to see if i could find and delete com.WD.WDDDriveServices.plist. which I had seen had worked for others who had had a 1tb WD external drive and had had their disk drives stop working because of this. However, when I went into my library the LaunchDaemons folder which was supposed to contain this erroneous file LaunchDaemons was not even there! Is LaunchDaemons called something else on Mountain Lion or what? I went through all my plist files and could not locate com.WD.WDDDriveServices.plist. anywhere! It is my hope that if i can find and delete this file that I may be able to reboot and have a working disk drive again!
(note)
I could play DVDs but not CDs up until I upgraded to mountain lion 10.8.4, but after the mountian lion upgrade now even DVDs won't work.
Can anybody help me resolve this issue with the Missing LaunchDaemons folder, or have another suggestion beyond repairing disk permissions or deleting com.WD.WDDDriveServices.plist. to make my optical drive work
I am hoping can resolve the main issue at hand which is my optical drive, but also any help on locating LaunchDaemons would be appreciated.
(I know there has been a few threads on this topic, believe me I've practically read them all, for most repairing disk permissions worked, for others who had a wd 1tb external hard drive (like me) deleting com.WD.WDDDriveServices.plist. worked, but that isn't an option at this moment since i cant even find LaunchDaemons in my Library lol.
PS.
Please don't be a smartass and say get a new optical drive, I know my MBP is old but I think the problem is not really with the hardware but rather with this absent LaunchDaemons folder.
Thanks in advance.Likely not. Your next step is a call to AppleCare or a visit to a repair center.

Four thoughts
• Brand and type of DVD/CD Media
• Burn Speed ?
• Ever used a Cleaning DVD ?
• Free space on Main Start-Up Hard Disk ?
Brand and type of DVD/CD Media: MATTERS
- Memorex, NoName and other Cheap brands - most probably works for other things BUT NOT FOR VIDEO.
I only use Verbatim
- DVD-RW - usually do not work OK but with various kinds of problems. DVD+R is a more modern sort and use to give problems on older DVD-players
I only use DVD-R
Burn Speed (in iDVD or alike): Matters
• Best or Max - is not best
I set it down to x2 or x4 Max
Ever used a Cleaning DVD ?
I use one WITHOUT Liquid but with brushes from time to time
Free space on Main Start-Up Hard Disk ?
- Due to that Mac OS X - is UNIX - it behaves likewise. It needs lot's of space on Boot / Start-Up Hard Disk for it's and the applications temp files.
I never go less than 25GB free space - If HD-Video material is used then 4-5 times more is a good thing.

SONY DVD-RW DW-U10A not reading SOME DVDs, reads ALL CDs and other DVDs
I have a SONY DVD-RW DW-U10A. It reads and writes all CDs, and reads commercial DVDs, like movies. HOWEVER, I am trying to install a new application (Halion Symphony Orchestra) and it won't read the Install DVD, nor will it read an old Data DVD it used to read ALL the time.... is there new firmware after the 2005 update they did? I REALLY don't want to have to replace. I seriously doubt it needs cleaning since the DVDs/CDs it reads are so specific, and I don't really think it needs replacement for the same reason. What's going on?
Is your problem with a Mac Pro, or a MacBook? Your profile says Mac Pro, yet you posted to the MacBook forum.

Why is my Mac ejecting any DVD or not reading CDs?
I been looking for a couple hours how to fix this problem. I been reading blogs and follow the instructions but nothing has worked so far. My CD player is not accepting any DVD... it keeps ejecting them. I have contacted apple but they are asking to purchase a plan?? It's just a support questions so I'm not sure why they do that. Does anybody know how to solve this problem and how to get support from Apple without paying?
okay-Apple will give you up to 90 days free (I think) then after that, you have to buy AppleCare, which is worth it for a mac pro. You could try repairing permissions, using Onyx or TechTool Pro which might help-then again, the drive itself might be bad. A can of compressed air may be helpful for cleaning the lens. Perhaps your user account might be bad, but that's just a long-shot guess.
Please give us more info about your Mac Pro including OS and we can help you better
thanks

T61p XP3 with Mat**bleep**a UJ-852 will not read CDs
Got From IBM Certified Used Equipment back in April, and just noticed I can't read CDs. Read alot of problems with the UJ-852 and DVDs, but not the problem I'm (my wife) is having. Machine Type 6457 AK7 with latest BIOS and Controller code. I have the Extended Warranty, but haven't found the right number to call. I can replace the hardware myself, and don't want to send Laptop back.
I sounds as if the Mat**bleep**a hardware has had problems for a while, and I should be able to get some help from Lenovo.
How come they put that drive in there in the first place, knowing it had problems... maybe I wouldn't notice... well, my wife noticed and her temperature is rising fast
Any suggestions??

My iMac is not reading photo dvds
Hi:
I am relatively new to Apple so, forgive me if this an obvious question. I have several photo cds and dvds from various sources that are not being read by the iMac. When the disc is loaded into the iMac, I receive a message that I have inserted a blank disc. However, if I load the same disc in another computer the photo images appear. Help! Thanks in advance for any guidance. If the CDs & DVDs system preference panel can't be changed
to allow these to do more for you, something else is required.
Could be the discs these image files are on were not formated
to an open standard the Mac can readily see; perhaps they are
of a type of format requiring a third party or other software to
open and use in the Mac. Odd that they'd be seen as blank.
There are freeware and shareware types of software available
for the Mac which may help; and then you'd have to choose
a software different than the native one selected as the OSX
default for those discs.
Are these photo discs ones with Kodak or other proprietary
data on them needed to see the stuff that's stored there?
This is a bit of a mystery to me. I have limited experience
with someone else's DVD photo media; I have two digital
cameras and almost no other images (from film) on disc.
And I have saved a few thousand images to CD-RW or
CD-R media, but have chosen a Mac + PC format to do it.
Maybe someone you know has a PC sitting around, between
crashes, that is hoping to save the day? Could be you need
to get some other software or maybe check the settings on
your CD & DVD system control preference, to see if there is
a built-in way to tell what is on those discs. If they are of a
proprietary format, the files could be converted and saved
again into a folder, then burned to another disc format.
Are there any identifiers on these non-readable in Mac image
discs? Sometimes, a brand such as Kodak can invite you to
search their site for free software players or editors which may
allow the user access into a proprietary format. I did that once.
{Hopefully someone who has solved this issue will see this.}
Good luck & happy computing! -
MacBook Pro not reading some DVD's.
My 18 month old, 15" MacBook Pro refuses to read some DVD's, even a new DVD out of the packet. When I insert the disc I can hear the drive whir up but it doesn't whir up as far as it does when I put a DVD in that it will read. The drive just keeps whirring up and down and if I leave it eventually I get a message saying I have inserted a blank DVD but this usually appears after a good 5 minutes. The only way I can I remove the DVD is by restarting my MacBook whilst holding down the eject button.
Any ideas?
