Not receiving message on iphone, but yes on ipad

Having weird problem with iMessage.
First, I have a iMac osx 10.8.3, iphone5 ios 6.1.3, and new ipad (3) ios 6.1.3
All our configured to receive imessages using my email and telephone number.
Sending doesn't seem to be a problem, but when I receive an imessage, the ipad usually gets it first, and sometimes, it doesn't go to my phone until much later. The ipad is connected to WIFI (no sim), and the iphone is also connected to same wifi network.
If I do not acknowledge the imessage (ie, if i dont view it), then it ends up showing up on the imac.
---- My iphone is my primary communications tool, is there a way to make sure the imessage goes onto it? I don't really need it going to my ipad if its going to be at the expense of it going to my iphone.

Is the account a POP account?
If so, do you leave the Mail app on your Mac launched and running actively checking the account for new messages while the Mail app on your iPhone is doing the same?
If so, quit the Mail app on your Mac when not being used. A limitation with a POP account is only one email client at a time can check the incoming mail server for new messages. If a 2nd email client attempts to do the same while another email client is communicating with the imcoming mail server, the server will temporarily block the 2nd email client preventing it from communicating with the server. Any new emails should be downloaded with the next attempt, but this might be causing problems identifying some of the new messages at the server already downloaded with the iPhone's Mail app. A POP account is designed for being accessed with a single email client only.
No such problem with an IMAP account.

    I switched to a non iphone over two months ago and ever since then I cannot receive messages from iphone users sending in imessage format. They have to turn imessage on and off to be able to text me. This has been extremely inconvenient since I need to receive these messages for work in addition to my personal life.     Ok so sorry about the long question but I just bought a galaxy s5 to replace my iphone 4s and im having trouble getting messages from iphone users.  I tried turning off imessage, turned off find my iphone, resetting the device completely, and even created a new apple id but nothing has worked in the past 6 hours. The only thing I have left is to contact apple support but I really dont want to spend $20 to talk to someone if I dont have to... Any help at this point will be apprectiated.  Thanks

    At the risk of repeating some information, I'm leaving a full message here because I found many of the suggestions above to be vague and confusing. This is a step by step of the call that I just put in to Apple to fix this issue with Samsung S5 Galaxies not getting text messages from iPhones. This process should only be necessary if you no longer have possession of your iPhone; if you do, it seems from messages above you can go into your iPhone's settings and turn off iMessage yourself.
    NOTE: According to Victoria, the Apple rep who was familiar with the problem and (supposedly, within the next half hour to 24 hours) fixed the problem, iPhone users who have updated to IOS 7.1.1 --not just 7.1, but the 7.1.1 specifically -- will not have this issue, as 7.1.1 fixed the issue causing this disconnect. However, any iPhone user operating under 7.1 or previous systems will not be able to send an S5 Galaxy user a text without an elaborate and individualized process to remove the former iPhone user's iMessage link. So, here's what I did:
    1. Called Apple Support at 800-694-7466 (I could not find the section headings/descriptions mentioned by FoxFifth above on the website listed; the sections did not match anything on the page linked to that supplied url)
    2. Followed the prompts, which involved giving my phone number (the one now linked to my Galaxy S5 but formerly to my iPhone 4s) and verbally requesting a representative at the appropriate time after the appropriate prompt. NOTE: disregard the warning about a $19 one-time service charge; it will not apply once you speak to someone.
    3. Wait for a rep.
    4. When the rep answers, say, "I just upgraded from my iPhone (4, 4s, 5, etc.) to a Samsung Galaxy S5 and can no longer receive texts from other iPhone users. I found online that this is because my iMessage is still turned on and I need you to deactivate my iMessage that automatically sends other iPhone users' messages to that old phone, which I no longer have."
    5. The rep, who -- if they are anything like Victoria, who said she's done this "quite a lot today, actually" -- will recognize your issue. The rep will send you a text message to your new device, which contains an alphanumeric code that you must read back to the rep to authenticate it. At that time, the rep will put in your iMessage deactivation request; it should (here's fingers crossed) become active within 24 (some users here say 48, so be patient) hours, at which time the problem should disappear.
    I hope this is detailed enough to help everyone else out there. Based on the Apple rep's familiarity with my problem, I'm hopeful the process will work as promised. I will update when I know for sure after a day or two that it is (or isn't) working.

    No need to worry! Everything on your device is 100%. There actually is an issue with some users who've updated to iOS 7. I've been able to notice this issue first hand. The issues would relate to your friends apple devices. I recommend having one of them turn off their iMessage and retry sending you a new message. I guarantee 100% you'll be able to receive the message. Apple is currently working on an improvement, thanks!

    A lot of my friends are complaining about me not receiving their messages, them not being able to send me iMessages, and several other problems. It all stems back to me having to register my iPad with my email address and my iPhone with my email address, allowing them to sync.     I recently got a MacBook Pro after having an iPhone and iPad since last year.  I have iCloud set up on all devices to share calendar dates.  However, when I input an event on iCal on the MacBook everything is fine and the event shows up on my iPhone and iPad calendars, but when I input an appointment on my iPhone, it will not update to the iCal on MacBook.

    First check that all your settings are correct, that calendar syncing is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
    Make sure the calendars you are using are in your 'iCloud' account and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud account (you can do this by clicking/tapping the calendar button in the top left corner of the application ), non iCloud calendars will not sync.
    If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your calendars are in the iCloud account, you might try unchecking calendar syncing in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling calendar syncing settings.

    I have the same problem! Before the upgrade, if I wasn't connected to the internet, any messages sent to me from an iphone would convert automatically to a text message. I have payg tarriff, so I turn cell data off, as it costs too much to use it. I have wifi at home and work, but if I'm out and about, I don't receive texts from iphone users until I'm on wifi.     No, you can stop using the account, but you cannot delete it.

    Wi-Fi is not required for iMessage. Internet access is required for iMessage which includes when the iPhone is connected to the cellular network.
    If an iMessage cannot be sent, it will fail to send and you will be prompted to send as an SMS if text only.

    "The bubble in the green background" indicates the message was an SMS (cellular text) message.  If the background were blue, it would mean the message was an iMessage.
    The difference is important.  Your iPad is not a cellular telephone.  It cannot send or receive cellular text or MMS messages.  It is, however, an Apple device which means it can communicate using Apple's iMessage to/from other Apple devices (typically over WiFi).

    Depends on the type of Message.
    SMS messages will send and receive with data off.  and while you can guarantee you send using SMS you cannot guarantee that whoever replies to you does also. They may be replying thorugh iMessage if they are using iPhones.
    However Android should be sending through SMS.
    You can turn off iMessage if you want to, though people with limtied SMS text messaging in their plans may not appreciate it, and stop messaging you.
