Not recognising duplicate import

Importing from iPhone: Same iPhone, same MacBook, but different Time Zone and WiFi network. iPhoto wrongly detects old photos already imported as new. Then when imported again, they are immediately recognised as duplicate. Is there any way to "mark" photos as already imported?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
*What's the plist file?*
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • LR4 import dialogue box does not recognise duplicates (and then it does)

I have a strange problem. Since I upgraded my LR3 catalog to LR4 I have had trouble with the import dialogue box not recognising duplicates and thumbnails but if I cancel the import and try again it all seems to work.
The problem: I have the ‘Don’t import suspected duplicates’ option selected on the import dialogue however when I open the dialog box any duplicates on the memory card are still shown and often the thumbnails only show for the first 20 – 50 photos.  When you cancel the import and open the dialogue box again the thumbnail images start popping up and all of the duplicates start disappearing from the dialogue box until they are all gone.
The situation: I am using a retina MacBook Pro running the latest version of OSX, although the problem first started when LR4 was released and I was running it on a c. 2008 Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro. I import a range of files from iPhone photos through to Canon 5D Mk III photos using a CF/SD card reader as well as plugging straight in to the iPhones with a USB cable.  My catalog is currently sitting at around 70,000 photos.
When I got the new retina MacBook Pro and first installed LR4 I copied across my catalog files and photos etc and this problem did not exist.  It started happening again after I copied across all of the hidden system files (presets, keywords, preferences etc.)
    Any ideas much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Nigel.

    Hi Pitmonkey,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
If you are having issues with your iMac automatically ejecting disks, I would suggest reading over and following the troubleshooting steps in the following article. I know there are references to an external SuperDrive but the troubleshooting is for built in SuperDrives as well.
Apple Computers: Troubleshooting the slot-loading SuperDrive
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2801
Accepts discs but they don't mount or are automatically ejected
Make sure the drive is not placed upside down. The aluminum enclosure should be facing up as shown in section 1.
Check the disc's surface for scratches and dirt, since these things can prevent the disc from appearing on the desktop.
Connect the MacBook Air SuperDrive directly to the computer's USB port instead a USB hub.
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
Ensure your drive can read the specific type of disc being used. The System Profiler or System Information may provide additional information regarding what media your computer supports.
OS X Snow Leopard v10.6 or earlier: Open Apple System Profiler by choosing "About this Mac" from the Apple () menu. Then, click More Info.
OS X Lion v10.7 and later: Click the Apple () menu and then hold down the Option key. Choose System Information from the menu.
If the disc continues to not be recognized, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or make an appointment with an Apple Retail Store.
    Have a great day,
    Joe

  • 9.4.2 version of iphoto does not recognise duplicate video's...

...... when you import to libary from finder?
anyone noticed this or know how to fix it?

It warns me of duplicate video files.  Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE 1: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

  • Want to get PSE organiser 11 to recognise duplicates at import

I have recently acquired a macbook pro with mountain lion and bought photoshop elements because I am familiar with the windows version (older). (I want to keep the photos i download in folders i can see, not embedded in iPhoto).
The first batch of photos i downloaded from my iphone with iphoto and then imported into photoshop organiser without a problem.
But for subsequent batches i tried to download directly using import>from camera or card reader, and saving in a named folder within Pictures (and in subfolders according to date). This was fine the FIRST time I did it, but now it does not recognise any photos IMPORTED THROUGH ELEMENTS ORGANISER as duplicates. So every time I download photos from the iphone it duplicates them in my folders.....that is....all EXCEPT the ones that I originally imported from iPhoto.
It correctly recognises these as duplicates and allows me to deselect them before import. But NOT so, for the ones downloaded directly using Elements organiser.
I theorised that Elements organiser is changing the metadata files when it imports and subsequently not recognising the original ones it detects on my phone as the same image. So I experimented with choosing 'none' instead of 'basic metadata' as metadata template, and experimented with checking the option to 'preserve current name in XMP' but it did not make any difference and continued to not recognise duplicates (but ONLY those imported directly from the phone bypassing iphoto) no matter which Elements Organiser options were used when the image was downloaded for the first time. (The size of the file was 1-2kb bigger when 'none' instead of 'basic metadata' was used for the original, though.)
THE MAIN REASON I BOUGHT PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS INSTEAD OF USING IPHOTO WAS SO I COULD SAVE MY IMAGES IN MY OWN FOLDER STRUCTURE.
But if I cant do this without either duplicating everything each time i import, OR having to mentally keep track of all the previously imported photos and manually select only the new ones (and run the risk of missing some), then it is unwieldy and a waste of money.
And there seem to be a lot of people with this problem on other threads and not all using macs. this seems like a very basic problem and surely should be fixed by the developers?????
    LATER....
I have just discovered the SAME THING HAPPENS with my Panasonic Lumix DMC-T27. Files that are already imported are not recognised as duplicates when I take another photo and then try to import just the last photo. PSE organiser wants to import the whole card again. So far I have only tried it once with the metadata options set for "preserve current name in XMP" and "none" for metadata template (as opposed to Basic Metadata template).
I did notice in the info section for the duplicated images that the duplicates have different times. The 'Date Created' under "file properties" for each of the duplicates (.JPG, -1.JPG, -2.JPG -3.JPG) increases by what looks like the time it was added by the organiser.
Does this mean that PSE organiser is modifying the 'Date Created' info to match the time imported and then at next import it is using the modified "date Created" time to check for duplicates?? Of course they are all seen as new files if this is the case!! Can this bug be fixed if it is a bug?? (This would fit with the iphoto ones being recognised correctly as duplicates because the original files for these are still stored in iphoto and haven't been downloaded or modified when saved via PSE organiser.)
I have taken screen shots of an example that was imported 4 times using different options as above and the 'Date created' increases for all of them regardless of the options i fiddled with as mentioned above. I can email them to anyone who thinks it would help solve the issue.
I may be barking up the wrong tree with all of this, but any help or hope of a future fix would be much appreciated,
    Thanks
    Kerrie

I have had this problem of duplicate imports and used the following work around.
In the photo downloader, do not select any option that will in any way change the photo's name or metadata when it is imported. If there is any difference between the previous import and the file still on the camera, the downloader will not recognize them as duplicates and will import the camera file, yet again. In short, select "Do not rename files." "Advanced Options" should all be blank except the leave-pictures-on-camera selection. "Apply Metadata" should have only "Basic Metadata" selected with all other options blank.
Of course, one still has the previously imported "altered" files on the PC or Mac even if future duplicate imports from the camera stop. Solving this is simply laborious and time consuming. Import the photos, yet again, using the settings described above. Then use PSE to identify duplicate photos and, one-by-one, delete all duplicates from the catalog and hard drive except for the most recent import, which should in all respects be identical to the file still on the camera.
This worked for me. Hope it helps you.

  • HT1567 Itunes 10.6.1.7 is not recognising an Audio CD when inserted in the drive. This means I connot import any CD's. What could be wrong?

iTunes 10.6.1.7 is not recognising an audio CD when inserted in the drive. This means that I cannot import CD's. It used to work but since installing other software iTunes does not see the audio CD and will not open the drive when "eject disc" is selected from the controls menu.

Check the drive letter of your CD drive.  iTunes doesn't seem to work properly with CD drives if they are mapped to the letters A or B.  Use Disk Management tool in windows to change to a different letter and this will fix it (if this is the cause!).

  • Importing video from Sony HDR-CX410 FCP 6.0.6 will not recognise AVCHD files. what is the solution?

First I have to admit I'm not technical in any way so I'm easily confused so please forgive me if my question sounds unprofessional.
The computer is a Mac desk top tower with Lion OS x 2x2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon with an  internal hard drive plus a number of remote hard drives.
I'm using Final cut pro 6.0.6 to edit video.
The question is, up until now I've been using material shot on mini DV tapes, then digitised into the computer via the camera. As this format is getting long in the tooth I decided to get one of the latest DVCAM cameras, I went for the Sony HDR-CX410.
It was not until I had purchased the camera & shot a few test seq. & then tried to down load into the computer that I found out that Final cut does not recognise the AVCHD files on the SD card.I've tried importing from the camera as well as a card reader with no result.
I've looked at a number of sites including Apple support community where it looks like this is a major issue for many people but I can't find anyone who is using the same camera. I wondered if this issue is something you have covered in the magazine, if so please let me know which copy, if not can you help in any way. It appears that Final cut proX may be able to translate the AVCHD files but I'm not sure. Am I right in thinking that if I do upgrade to FCPX I will still have to convert the files, if so would you recommend a suitable software program.  Is there any reason why Apple make it so difficult to edit this AVCHD format when all the latest cameras are using it, perhaps its time to change back to a PC?

    Eric,
FCP 6.0.2 (compared to previous version) comes with the latest improvement and support for AVCHD.
    However, here is a suggestion:
In Log&Transfer (top frame) on the right of *search field* there are three buttons, click on the one showing a little arrow-down and a sort of little star. Choose preferences then in the *transcode to* section click on those two tiny arrows pointing one up and the other down and choose Apple Intermediate Codec. Can you now transfer? (Add selection to queue)
Once again 6.0.2 might provide better support for your camera.
Use the search tool for more info.
    G.
PS. Please note that some people have had problems with 6.0.2 so get us much info as you can before updating.

  • Lightroom 5.5 - still not recognizing duplicates on import

With so many people complaining about this issue, I can't believe that it hasn't been addressed in any version 5 update yet.  Version 4 did not exhibit this problem.
    Scenario:
Insert SD card containing many previously imported images and a few new ones.
Lightroom recognizes card and automatically switches to import
When configured to show new photos and with “Don’t import suspected duplicates” checked, many, many previously imported images on the card are shown in the import panel.
Wait a while for Lightroom to hopefully prune the set of duplicates.....nope.
Cancel the import, and without removing the SD card, re-initiate the import.
Magically, Lightroom does much better, but might still not recognize some duplicates.
Cancel the import, and without removing the SD card, re-initiate the import.
Usually, all duplicates have been recognized and just new photos are shown.
It seem the longer the card is left in slot (built-in reader in the iMac), the more likely it is that Lightroom will recognize duplicates.  I'd welcome any advice on how to get my Lightroom 4 behavior back.

I'm having the same problem with LR 5.6. There seems to be no consistency as to when the issue occurs. It doesn't depend on if I removed images from the catalog on a previous culling session or not. Example: I recently imported 1166 images of a sporting event. I deleted a few hundred images from the catalog and from the external drive that the images were copied to during the import. When I went to check the contents of that CF card by using the import function of LR, all the images showed up as not having been imported, even though "Don't import suspected duplicates" was checked. I would have expected to see a few hundred to show up as not having been imported (those previously deleted from the catalog and external drive) but not all of them which includes the ones I saved in the catalog and on the external hard drive. Another CF card had several hundred images (all JPGs) of a different sporting event. They had all been imported into LR. None had been removed from the catalog or from the copy-to external hard drive. The next day they all showed as not having been imported despite "Don't import suspected duplicates" being checked.
Until now, I hadn't realized that this was a chronic problem with the recent versions of LR.
Thanks for any help anyone has to offer.
    Regards,
    Andy

I have just updated to LR5.  I also have a new Camera.  Nikon D800.  Trying to import directly (from camera) into LR.  But unsuccessful. Getting the following message.  "The files are from a camera which is not recognised by the raw format support in Lightroom."  How can I import please?

    Hi,
I assume you mean the Nikon D810 because D800/800E support has been there since Lightroom 4.1
Currently, because it is a new camera (D810) the only support is in a RC of ACR 8.6 for Photoshop CS6 and CC, as the RC runs out on 31 August it is expected support will be there in the next dot release of Lightroom.
Current limitations are that only full sized NEF is supported.
If you wish to import to Lightroom 5.5. you will need to download the DNG Converter v8.6RC and convert the NEF files (full size RAW ony) to DNG then import into Lightroom 5.5

  • Iphone not recognised by iPhoto

I am running IOS 6 on my iPhone 3GS nd wanted to import photos from my phone into iphoto.
however when i do so iphoto does not recognise the phone. It comes up in the sidebar that it is there but has no name
or images. I'm also running mountain lion if that helps.

First try this:  make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.
If that doesn't help  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Connect the iPhone and see if it is recognized in the new library.  If it is than you're current library is the culprit.
If your library is the culprit do the following:   make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Windows Vista - iTunes not recognising iPod!

iTunes is not recognising my iPod and the iPod Setup Assistant isn't showing automatically. Can anyone help. I have a new laptop with Window Vista is this operating system the problem? Can help would be appreciated. I can import music into iTunes OK and purchase music from iTunes itself I just can't get iTunes to recognise my iPod!

    > Step 3:Download and install the latest chipset drivers from the laptop manufacturers website.
    >*So here I am with the issue still not resolved. How do i Download and install the latest chipset drivers >in order to have Toshiba Satellite L300 & Microsoft Vista recognise my ipod?
Install an hardware diagnostic tool like Everest home Edit or similar.
This tool would provide all hardware details about your notebook.
It would list all devices and chipset name too.
I think its Intel chipset so you could find the driver on the Intel page

  • Itunes not recognising my library even though I transferred my library from another mac

Hello.  Transferring over to an MBA from a MBP.  I followed the instructions and copied the itunes folder from my MBP (itunes 11.1.1) to an external hard drive after consolidating it.
On my MBA I removed the itunes folder it came with and replaced it with the folder from my external hard drive (itunes 11.0.3). However, iTunes is not recognising any of the music!  I really want to import all my ratings and playlists so am keen for this to work.
I've done it before and it worked just fine.  What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks in advance.

Oh, yeah, it is confusing. The Purchased option on the Sidebar only shows purchases actually made on the computer you are using at the time you click on the Purchased option. The Purchased option under Quick Links shows you all purchases made under the Apple ID that is signed on.
I wish they would change the name of one or the other so they would be distinctive from one another - even Purchased vs. Purchases would be better than using the exact same word!
    Cheers,

  • File may be corrupt ore not recognised by Powerpoint

My bosses powerbook, suddenly does not want to let him move some pictures from iphoto into powerpoint or word. It comes up with the message
'The file may be corrupt, in use, or of a type not recognised by Powerpoint'.
This is even on pictures that previously could be moved over ok. a number of pictures are ok, but new ones, which are from a new camera (none of these work), and some of the old ones don't transfer. I can look at all the the pictures ok in iphoto, preview, but can't in Office. If I open a problematic picture in Preview, and then 'save as' and overright the existing picture, then it will import it into Office programmes ok.
Has anyone else encountered something similar? Help!
    I'm using Office X version 10.1.6
    Justyn

I don't think it's a permissions issue or you'd get a different message but try manually reset the ownership and permissions for the iPhoto Library folder as follows:
Setting Permissions for iPhoto Library Folder
1 - Select the iPhoto Library folder and type Command-I.
2 - When the Info window comes up go to the Ownership and Permissions section and make sure You have Read & Write permission and that the Owner and Group have Read & Write also. Others - Read Only.
3 - Then click on the "Apply to enclosed items..." button.
When you export a photo to the desktop can it be move it from there OK? Move one to the desktop and bring up the Info pane on it, Command-I. Then under "Open with" set Preview as the default application. Then click on the "Change all" button. Good luck.

  • Adobe Media Encoder CC 2014 not recognising opacity/alpha values from After Effects

Hello, I'm importing AE compositions directly into Media Encoder to output as 'Match Source - Medium Bitrate H.264' files. However Media Encoder is not recognising the opacity values of the layers in AE and the background images are coming out as opaque rather than partially transparent.
How can I resolve this? If I render the movie from AE as a .mov then use Media Encoder it works fine, but that takes a lot more time.

Can you post screenshots of your comp in After Effects and the result you are getting from AME?
One issue you may be hitting is that AME is not aware of the composition background color. This is a limitation of Dynamic Link; because a primary use case of Dynamic Link is placing an After Effects composition, such as lower-thirds titles, into a Premiere Pro sequence, Dynamic Link ignores the background color of the composition and treats any the background pixels as alpha. In AME, since there is no compositing happening, black is used to fill in the alpha area.
To work around this limitation, place a solid at the bottom of your composition layer stack that is the color of your background.
You're welcome to submit this problem as a feature request: http://adobe.ly/feature_request

  • Offline install of Windows 7 SP1 not recognised by Windows Update

    Hi
I have asked this question over at the Windows Community forum, and someone suggested that I ask here.
This question regards Windows 7 and Service pack 1
I bought a couple of new computers, and decided to use the offline SP1 installation on each to get the computers up to date when I first configured them.
So I downloaded the offline update iso from Microsoft, created a DVD and installed SP1.
After configuring my computer, I then connected windows update to get all fixes etc since SP1.
To my dismay windows update has presented me with a list of *all* updates, including SP1.
Is there any way of getting Windows update to recognise the fact that I already have SP1 installed?
    Further info:
This is the procedure I went through.
    1) Built the computers
    2) Installed Windows 7
    3) Installed hardware device drivers
    4) Installed SP1 from DVD
    5) Connected to the internet
    6) Activated Windows
    7) Used Windows Update
    8) Installed the fix/patch required for windows update to work
    9) re-connected to windows update
    10) Was dismayed at the list of fixes requiring download. (around 148)
After going through the process of downloading the updates, at around the time of the second re-boot, the list of updates included Service Pack 1.
AV Software was going to be the next thing to install, after the computer was *fully* patched
    Further Further informatio :)
I have since gone ahead and installed Windows on my second computer.
I'm still interested in finding a solution for future reference.
After installing Windows7 and applying the offline SP1 update, I checked to see what updates were installed before
activation and connecting to windows update.
    These are the updates listed.
    1) Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 (KB976902)
    2) Update for MS Windows (KB976902)
    3) User Mode Driver framework V1.11 (KB2685813)
    4) KB958488 (the list just haqd the kb number, no title)
    5) Hot Fix for Windows (KB2505454)
My original question, and the answers/feedback can be viewed at the following page:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_update/offline-install-of-windows-7-sp1-not-recognised-by/e8ab61d0-8669-4297-acfd-4acc0da8c1dc?rtAction=1427893878897
    Cheers...
    Daz

    Hi Daz,
You mentioned that the SP1 prompted again in the needed updates, I suspect that that is not the full service pack, it is only some changes to existing non-security content, appropriate 10 MB size. you can check the size of the update to confirm
    this.
See more information in this link
    http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/894199
And after you have manually installed the updates offline, have you checked whether these updates are listed in the "installed updates", or in Update history? And you can check the new detected updates, whether they have been successfully installed
in your system. Meanwhile, when you check for updates online, please check your Windows Update settings, we recommend you to check for important updates, not optional updates or hotfix. You can install the optional update or hotfix when you need it in the
    future.
