Not recognized by computer, is it dead?

Plugged my granddaughters first generation shuffle into my Macbook to put on new music and charge it up. She said there had been some problems with it, so when a message came up saying it was corrupted and gave me the option of restoring it, I did, since we wanted to erase everything anyway. After that was finished, I tried to put new music on and let it charge. After it said it could be disconnected after dragging songs to it, I did. No music played, battery is charged - light is green. When you turn it on a green light comes on briefly, but nothing happens when push middle button. If push ouside ring, flashes green and amber. Now it isn't recognized by either of my Macs (also have an older iMac), not by iTunes, not by the Finder, not by Disk Utility, not listed in system profiler. So, is it truly dead?

I thought my shuffle was dead and almost threw it in the bin - it was old and had served me well. It didn't appear on the desktop and wasn't recognised by either itunes or disk utility. It did, however, appear in System Profiler (Apple Menu, About This Mac, More Info, Hardware, USB).
Solution that worked for me...

  • IPOD Shuffle not recognized by computer, and caused a  USB power surge

Device is not recognized by computer, and I tried the listed support recommendations.
The problem originated when I plugged the IPOD shuffle directly into the computer USB ( not using a hub), and this caused a warning window to appear saying unknown device has caused a power surge to this port, and most be removed. Prior to this event, the IPOD shuffle has worked (with direct contact with computer usb or through a powered highspeed usb hub) without issue for nearly 1 year. Any taker's on this issue? Thanks.

    Hi JBR,
Go to your control panel and click on Install/Uninstall programs. Scroll down and see if you have multiple versions of the ipod updater installed on your computer. If you do, then uninstall both versions. Reboot your computer.
Next, go to the downloads page and download/install the 1-10-2006 ipod updater. Once installed, go to your start programs and select ipod updater from there. Plug in your ipod and wait a moment. If it's like mine, it'll recognize your ipod and then you can do a "restore" for a clean format.
After that, open itunes and life should be good.
    Hope this helps!

hello, i baught a blackberry curve on ebay (big mistake!) it functions as phone, but is not recognized by computer. when i plug it in via USB it connects for a second and then stops, i.e. synchronization is not possible.
i reset the device, reinstalled the DM software, spent hours trying to solve this issue nothing works - any help?
btw, under 'manage connecetions', USB does not appear at all.

prior to doing anything, you need to install the USB drivers.

after you have checked everything is okay, you can do the next step, that is install the Desktop Manager.
Moreover, ou can wipe your device so that there is no remains from the previous owner.

  • IPod nano does not charge & is not recognized by computer or iTunes

    I have a 1st generation nano 1 GIG.
    It appears "dead."
It is not recognized by My Computer, iTunes or the Ipod Updater (The updater asks that I connect the iPod, which I do). The iPod diagnostics through iTunes also reports that my iPod is not connected.
I have tried my iPod on 4 different machines, with one of them having USB 2.0.
I tried the following from Jeff Bryan. (I don't know if the links from his post have carried over into this post.) So I will list the things I have tried near the end of this post.
    - My iPod won't turn on.
    - iPod battery doesn't charge.
    - iTunes 7 doesn't recognize the iPod.
    - Your Windows PC doesn't recognize iPod.
    - iPod appears in Windows Explorer but does not appear in iTunes.
    - iPod does not appear in iTunes.
    - Fast user switching in Windows XP is not supported.
I tried resetting my iPod by switching the Hold button on and off and then pressing Menu and the Select button for 6-10 seconds. I have done this over and over and over.
I have uninstalled the latest iTunes, reboot, reinstall - same problem.
I have stopped the iPod service, plugged in the iPod, but it isn't recognized by My Computer as stated in the Apple Do-It-Yourself Help. I launched iTunes - same problem.
I used the window cleanup utility, reboot, reinstall iTunes, connect iPod - same problem.
I have used the Windows ipconfig utility to change my boot parameters, but still nothing.
If anyone has any ideas, I would greatly appreciate them.
My iPod is just shy of 6 months.
I do have a replacement contract with Best Buy - but I would like to cover all the bases before I succumb to defeat.

  • 5th generation IPOD not recognized by computer

Hey Internet users, my dad's been having some troubles and I was hoping to try and help him by reposting something he did elsewhere...
"Hello Everyone and thank you for reading my post.
I have a weird problem, my 30 gig 5th generation Ipod is not recognized by my computer or itunes. This is the last thing it happen, I was working on a client house for days, so my ipod's battery was completely dead, I was kind of desperate, so I thought that I could plug it to my client's mac just to recharge, but nothing happened. So days later I got back home and my windows PC will not recognized or charge the ipod at all. I got it charge and works perfect with my Ihome radio. I tried rebooting the Ipod, I tried resetting it to be in disk mode with not a problem, I tried changing the USB port, I did connected my friends Ipod and connected right away, so the wire connector is OK, I tried a different wire connector just in case, I tried connecting the ipod to a different PC.... I kind of running of ideas here. The ipod works great but I would live to download some new tunes to it... Any ideas. I cannot restore or upgrade firmware because ipod is not recognized by the computer....
The thing I am trying right now is installing the latest Itunes and see what happens. I have windows Pro SP3 recently updated. Your help would be greatly appreciated."
So...if anyone has any ideas, please post!!

I am having the same problem. Sorry I'm not going to be of any help. But I hope someone gives you some recommendations cause I really want to get mine fixed. My iPod did the exact same thing. It was dead and I tried to use my car charger for the first tim and it did nothing. Then I plugged it in to a friends computer and nothing. I can only charge it on a speaker dock. And no computer recognizes that it's connection when I use the USB cable.

  • Ipod shows it is charging - but ipod not recognized by computer

My ipod mini is dead when not connected to the USB cord; once my ipod is connected to the USB cord, it looks like the ipod should be charging, but both my computers (laptop & desktop) are not recognizing that the ipod is connected through the USB.
I went to the store last night for service and the ipod genius told me it was probably my USB cord, since when he hooked up my ipod to his computer through his USB cord - it connected and needed to be reformatted.
I went ahead and bought a new USB cord - but that didnt solve the problem. My computer is still not recognizing my ipod.
Could anyone be of any assistance?
It broke 3 days ago and I'm lost without it.

Jersey, first off, it sounds like your battery must be almost dead (unable to retain a charge). If you are looking for quotes on having it replaced, I have found www.ipoddepot.ca to be very good and competitively priced.
As for the ipod not being recognized, it seems there is a lot of that being reported here, without any satisfactory solution so far. It seems like all are with Windows XP computers and I am beginning to wonder if it might relate to recent Windows security updates? In fact I think I will troll around the Microsoft site to see if I can confirm that theory.
As for taking it to a tech, I had exactly the same experience. The difference in result is due to the fact that he was plugging the thing into a Mac and not a Windows XP computer... Different software and environment, entirely!

  • My ipod not recognized by computer

    Hi,
I JUST bought an iPod Nano this morning.  I came home, plugged it into the computer to charge (it's completely dead), and wanted to install it on my laptop (a Dell Inspiron 15.  I've heard some laptops have had issues with some ipod devices, so I wanted to go ahead and throw that info out there).  However, my iPod doesn't seem to be charging.  And my laptop does not recognize my ipod (the whole "computer does not recognize device.... device is malfunctioned" message appears).  I've tried unplugging it, and plugging it back in many times, I've clicked on the Bluetooth icon (there's an option "Add Bluetooth Device, I can't get it to do much...), and I've gone into the Control Panel of my computer, to the Hardware spot, and tried uninstalling, and it still doesn't work (BTW, my device is labeled under the Hardware section as "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)"). I already have iTunes installed on my computer.  I'm getting pretty frustrated and could use some ideas.

Hello... my ipod 7g is not recognized too . I went through all of the steps and it doesnt work on my computer... i really have no idea what is wrong ... It doesnt appears in my computer, doesnt appears in itunes, It shows only in the bar next to the windows clock, but when i click on the icon there is no even option to unplug it .... (It works fine on my girlfriends laptop). I have this ipod for 1 year... I just want to start to use it on my computer ... help me please..

  • Ipod is not recognized by computer or itunes and does not charge

Hi, so for a few months I've been having a problem with my iPod Touch 4th gen where when i connect the ipod to the computer it does not connect. My Computer says "USB device not recognized" and also I've recognized that my ipod doesnt charge either. When I connect it to a wall charger the ipod charges fine, but i can't sync anything or any music. I have no idea how to fix this problem :\

    See:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    I would start with
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
    or
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP

  • Ipod Touch 3rd Gen - not recognized by computer or itunes.  Shows cable pointing to itunes logo.  Can't reset it.  Doesn't work at all.  Have tried all the supposed fixes on the apple site with no luck.  It suggested asking other users !

I have a 3rd Generation ipod touch that is not recognized by itunes or my computer.  My itunes works with other apple devices I own.  I cannot reset the ipod touch and can never get to the screen where it is supposed to show a red battery to turn it off.  I can't reset it.  Have tried to use the suggestions on the apple site to no avail.  Any suggestions ?

From my experience, the only way you're gonna get a PC afflicted with this disease to work with a 5th gen nano is to roll back to an earlier version of iTunes.  Those affected have been exhausted by this ongoing issue.  To update or not to update?  And I always say never update unless you have to, and turn off all that auto update mess!
I have two core2duo lappies running 32b vista.  My workflow dictates 32b fyi.  One is acer aspire running itunes v 11.1 (.0.126),  5th gen nano was originally formatted and works just fine on this machine to this day.  My other is the bigger badder lenovo thinkpad and the 5th gen will NOT mount using any version of itunes past 11.0 (.1.12)  Windows mounts it just fine.  itunes is not having it.  no shirt no shoes no service.
I have both a 4th and 5th gen nano.  The 4th gen works great on both machines, I even successfully tested it with the latest version (11.1.5) before subsequent deletion on the thinkpad!  Weird huh?  I think my next experiment might be to restore my 5th gen w/ a Mac and theeeeen plug it into PC itunez.
I'm at a loss on the thinkpad.  Scanned for intruders.  Cut the Lenovo bloat.  Executed system and reg maintenance.  Took down msconfig to a safe mode + itunes level to attempt to resolve possible sw conflicts but to no avail.  NO NO NO.  Every single dang port, every time on the thinkpad.  Has me feeling like others might get the same treatment by the next itunes update.  :|
    So in summary for me:
5th gen nano and thinkpad are a NoGo on 11.1^  last working version for me = 11.0.1
5th gen nano is working on an acer aspire 11.1.0  but no way in the world am I updating
4th gen nano is kicking 5th gen nano's @zz so what would make me want to buy a new ipod?

  • After upgrading to 8.1 in windows, my ipod is not recognized in computer or itunes

I upgraded to Windows 8.1 a while back, and just tried to synch my ipod with itunes and now my ipod is not being recognized in my comuper or itunes. Does anyone know why this is and/or how to fix it?
    Thanks!!
    Amber

    Hello Amber,
I would be concerned too if my iPod was not recognized by iTunes.  I found a couple of articles that might help with this.
If you don't see your iPod in the My Computer or Computer section of Windows, follow the steps in this article:
iPod not recognized in 'My Computer' and in iTunes for Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1369
If Windows recognizes your iPod but iTunes does not, follow the steps in this article:
iPod: Appears in Windows but not in iTunes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1363
Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.
    Best,
    Sheila M.

  • TS1369 ipod touch not recognized by computer or itunes

My iPod Touch is not recognized by my computer or itunes. I believe this happened after the recent upgrade for latest fixes.

    See:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    I would start with:
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
Also, if you  have iTunes 11 turn on the Sidebar. Go to iTunes>View and click on Show Sidebar. You can also do a Crtl+S to show the sidebar. The sidebar is where Devices appears. and Control+B to show the Menu bar
