Not recognizing Hard disk

When I turn on my Mac I either get the white screen or question mark. Moslty question mark. I`ve been trough all the instructions but nothing helps. Usually the hard disk is there, but when I press OPTION key it does not show up. It`s hard to explain the problem, but for me it seems that the hard drive is gone. I can`t Re-instal OSX because there`s no drive to instal it on. I hope you guys get my problem and can help

Either the HDD is dead or the connection cable is faulty.  Take out the HDD and place it in an enclosure and connect it to the MBP via USB.  The start the MBP with the OPTION key held down.  If the external HDD is recognized, click on it and se if it boots the MBP.  If it does, then it is the cable that is the problem.  Otherwise the problem lies with the HDD.
Ciao.

  • Sol 10 x86 not recognizing hard disk

    Hi,
I am trying to install Sol 10 x86 V 6/06 on a HP DL585. I am installing from a CD. When it is time to install the software , I get an error, found no disks . These are 72Gb disks. The hardware is supported under hcl. Are there any extra drivers I need for the install cd to recognize

  • Hard drive not recognized in disk utility

I'm trying to replace the hard drive in my MacBook Pro , the old hard drive was not recognized in disk utilities after the computer crashed .After installing a new hard drive and booting from the original Mac OS install DVD,( leopard?) the new hard drive is not recognized either ? Help

It may be the internal connecting cable that is the problem.  If you can install the new HDD in an enclosure, connect it to the MBP, then see if you recognize it using the OSX installation disk.  If so, the internal connector should be replaced.

  • Hard crash now hard drive not recognized in disk utility.

During a virus scan the Macbook froze up now the computer does not seem to be accessing the hard drive. Tried to reinstall Leopard but the internal hard drive is not recognized (same is true when we tried to use Disk Utility). It will not start in safe mode either. Does this sound like a fried hard drive or maybe a corrupted drive that might be repairable with DiskWarrior? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

If the A/V you were using was Norton/Symantec, the drive may be OK. Norton is a virus.
Burn a Ununtu CD and see if you can boot into it and look at the drive before giving up on it.

  • Question re: MacBook not recognizing hard drive...

Question: When a MacBook is not recognizing it's hard drive, what are the basic steps one can take to fix?
Have been reading through the posts the past few hours, and do see information on this, but am wondering/hoping someone can simplify a bit for me? Am not very computer savvy...
Would so greatly appreciate any help

Boot from your Install DVD and go to Disk Utility and find the hard drive from there and repair it.
If DU can't find the HD then it's probably defective.

  • Boot device not found, hard disk not exist.... does that mean my computer is dead?

Suspecting that Im in a world of hurt here. I tried turning on my computer and it says "boot device not found" - run in test failed... when I hit F4 and run a hard disk test it says "hard disk not exist". The memory test passes, but under the boot device not found it says in blue "please install an operating system on your hard disk"... and to make matters worse it's making some funny noises when it tries to boot.
Is there any hope at all that this computer will work again? Is there any chance that any of the things I had on my hard disk can be recovered?
    This question was solved.

    You're very welcome, Jonathan.
dv5 still isn't enough info for me to provide the service manual (in case there are differerent ones for the different dv5 models).
However here is the link to the service manual I randomly pulled.
    http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c01550108/c01550108.pdf
Assume it is safe to say all dv5 models come with SATA notebook drives.
So, if you want to spring for $15, you can get this enclosure which apparently has very good reviews.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182138
From what you are describing (noise and stuff), I would say you don't have much of a chance to recover data but that is up to you if you want to try the enclosure or not.
    Here is what I recommend:
Yank the hard drive, and power on the notebook.
If the odd noise you heard is gone, then you can pretty much safely assume the drive was the cause, and that replacing the drive, and reinstalling the operating system will solve the issue.
If the noise is still there, then there could be another issue, and it might be risky throwing good money after bad.

  • Powermac g5 will not boot---hard disk appears not to mount

    tried resetting smu, nvram
tried disk util---does not see drive(orig. 160 gb)
    tried new disk---not recognized either
    boots to OF ok
i'm running out of patience and have no money to take it to apple
    would greatly appreciate any input/advice--thanks

    Dear Fryan,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The HDD is not mounting and there could be lot of reasons for this malfunction.
What you can try is :
1.Open the unit and reseat the HDD cable.
    2.Re-pair the RAM .(re-arrange)
    3.Do PMU/SMU reset.
4.Try to boot holding the "option" key. You will see the HDD icon if you do not see the HDD icon that means the boot rom is failing to rcognize your HDD. This could be a Logic Board faliure or a HDD faliure (but lets not assume things so fast
If you do see the HDD icon then click on it and then click on the right arrow.
5.If the previous step fail try to boot to the install disk holding the c key or the same procedure usin option key.
6.If it is able to boot to install disk thank god that your logic board is safe.
7.Your install disk has an Apple Hardware Test included you will have to boot it holding the option key and choose AHT to boot to AHT and run the test.
    (Addtional testing steps)
1.IF you happen to have another MAc then you can connect the affectd Mac to a known good Mac via firewire cable and boot the affected mac with the HDD of the good MAc by holding the option key and starting the good mac with T key.
Also you can do the reverse step to chekc the HDD of the Affected mac. This procedure is called target disk mode.
Tell me how far you are able to go.
    Hopw this helps.
    Good Day!
    Ravi Dimri.

    Hi kruione,
If you are having an issue with an external drive not being detected by your iMac, I would suggest resetting the computer's parameter RAM. See this article for how -

  • Equium A210-1C4 not recognizing optical disk drive

I have a Equium A210-1C4 which will not recognise the odd.
The drive has power and spins disks but does not appear as a drive in MY COMPUTER.
It also is not recognised in the Bios.
I have updated the Bios and tried to install the firmware but get message that the drive is not found.
I have tried is in another computer and it works fine.
Has anyone had similar problems and is there a solution?
    Many thanks

    > I have tried is in another computer and it works fine.
You have tested optical disc drive in other computer?
Anyway, if the ODD is not recognized in BIOS Im afraid ODD controller is defective. It is mainboard issue so there is no some kind of easy solution.
I don't think you can do much about that except to exchange the mainboard.

  • Not recognized + The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer

Some time ago, dmg files work correctly
Now it does not work and it shows a message " _not recognized_ "
This problem did not notice its existence except for today
There is another problem bothering me too
When I connect the hard disk does not work and it shows a message
" _The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer_ "
Forgive me for my weak English
I sincerely hope that I find a solution

Your second problem indicates either a failed drive or simply one that is corrupted. For the latter you can repartition and reformat the drive:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
I apologize, but I'm not quite sure about the first problem. Perhaps you could provide some additional explanation. What steps you are taking and exact errors or alerts that appear, if any, would help.

  • Xserve Raid not recognized by Disk Utility

My Xserve Raid is recognized when I run the RaidAdmin utility. I can create new arrays everything shows up without any problems. I updated the firmware for the Xserve Raid using just the ethernet connection to administer it. Changed the card and the cables that are used to connect the Raid server to a G5 server, but it still does not get recognized by Disk Utility. I am at a loss of what to do next. I have green lights for everything....no problems showing up in RaidAdmin. Please, please help....

    Hello
I have the exact same problem: after updating java and rebooting the server, the raid array is no longer visible. Everything is green, no errors in the log files, fibre channel is up and running, BUT: the array does not show with any SCSI address. LUN masking is off. Server is at 10.5.8 (intel). The array was mounting just fine before the reboot (and all before that). I've plugged the fibre channel into a PPC server, same thing: link ok, no SCSI. I'm reconditioning the drive at the moment, but it should still be visible.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

  • Can Not Verify Hard Disk

I was trying to install Windows XP on my iMac using Boot Camp, but during the disk partition phase, I got an error message saying that "The Disk Could Not Be Partitioned Because the Disk Could Not Be Verified." So I opened up Disk Utility and tried to verify the disk and the result is "Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit. 1 HFS voluem checked. Volume needs repair." However, the "Repair Disk" option is not available. Please Help!
iMac Core 2 Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Well,it wasn't only about reinstalling and took me five minutes to fix the problem.
    -Search your installation DVD's.
-Insert the disc 1 and sthut down your Mac
-Start your Mac again while holding down the C key
-Now your Mac should boot from the CD, this can take some time.
-After a while you will see a installation screen where you can chose a language.
    -Chose English and continue.
-Then click some time's next and agree with the "Software Agreement".
-Open Disk Utility. Top menu bar --> Utilities --> Open Disk Utility.
-Select your hard disk in the list of disks and volumes on the left side
-Go to the First Aid (tab somewhere on the right).
-Click the button to verify the permissions.
-Then Click the button to repair the permissions.
-Click the button to verify the disk.
-Then Click the button to repair the disk.
-Exit the Disk Utility and the installer.
    -Restart your Mac

  • System can not find hard disk

After starting up my macbook Air, a blinking question mark pops up. I switch off the laptop. Restart the laptop with 'ALT' button pressed. 'Disk Utility program' does not show the 'macintosh HD' disk. So apparently it can not find it. Your advice is appreciated, how I can refind the hard disk

thanks, unfortunately no positive impact. Hard disk can still not be found. I also executed the tips as mentioned in:

  • IBook not loading Hard DIsk

I have an upgraded G4 ibook with a new installation of Mac OSX Tiger. Just the other day it stopped loading the hard disk. I have tried several times to get the laptop to boot. It begins the loading phase and never quite gets all the way there. It shows no sign of the motherboard not responding since the CD drive recognizes and the hard drive begins to spin. Cant quite figure it out. Please help if any of you have been here and know what it might be. Hit me back at [email protected] with any information on this subject. Any information would be helpful at this point. I would expect this from windows, but not a mac.
