Not recognizing wireless network

I have a new macbook pro (2 months old).  Initially, it had no problems recognizing my wireless network.  However, today it is no longer able to recognize any wireless networks.  Wireless is still working with my iPhone/iPad.  I tried rebooting and no luck.  Any thoughts?

Hey jedediah,
EDIT: I read your post again and it looks like your roommate may have turned on Internet Sharing. This means that your computer is like a hub for sharing your internet connection with wired clients.
Check in System Preferences>>Sharing>>Internet Tab, and it should say Internet sharing is off. If Internet Sharing is on, try switching it off, and see if you get some sort of connection.
I'm not sure this will work, but the arrow over your airport icon makes me think it's Internet Sharing.

  • Windows XP not recognizing wireless networks

I recently upgrade routers from an old motorola router (about 5 years old), to a new airport extreme. I have a desktop that is running windows 7 and is hardwired into the airport extreme. and i have two ipod's that connect to the airport extreme. However it is my laptop (an old sony viao vgn-fs550) that is running windows xp (sp3) that cannot connect to the airport extreme. I tried the "fix it" solution center from microsoft but it wont download correctly, i get an error, so i tried to fix manually and it still doesn't work, when i go to "view wireless networks" there is nothing there. i got frustrated to the point that i  reinstalled windows and for a brief minute i was able to view all the wireless networks in my area, including the airport extreme and the "guest network". but i could not connect to either of them. and then the "view wireless networks" would just vanish.
Is it just that windows XP *****? because if upgrading the laptop to windows 7 will fix this problem I will. But I would still like to know why XP won't allow wireless networks. From what I see online this is quite a problem with windows XP.

As a side note regarding my not being able to view wireless networks using windows xp on my laptop. I am investing in an airport express so i can access the internet on my ipad 2 while traveling. My "new" question is if i can use the airport express to "fix" my problem of my laptop running xp (sp3) not being able to view wireless networks? Would the airport express act like a "new" wireless card for my laptop and therefore will be able to connect to my airport extreme without any problems and without having to upgrade the laptop to windows 7?

  • Satellite not showing wireless networks, adapter seems ok

my satellite is not showing wireless networks and i can't figure out what networks are available. the adapter seems to be working properly according to windows device manager. i had to uninstall configfree, although i'm not sure that caused any problem. i have had to run a bunch of anti-spyware programs, registry cleaners etc., system seems much better but a few glitches.

It's possible, but it might be a lot more work to do so.  It all depends on how soon you need to get it fixed.  I'm not a network specialist so I can't really offer much in the way of assistance other than what I already did.  It's possible someone else might have other ideas, but since you didn't post this in the Networking and WiFi Forum where it belongs it's quite possible that those networking specialists will never even see your post to respond to it.  I know that I rarely go into the Networking Forum as it isn't my strong suit.

  • HT1695 Ipad will not find wireless networks that it used yesterday, but MacBook Pro still finds and uses these networks.

Our ipad will not find wireless networks that it used yesterday.   Our Mac Book Pro finds them and uses them.
we have reset the cable modem and wireless router, turned off the ipad and turned it back on.   Turned wireless off and back on.
but it just spins trying to find networks but finds none.
    What do do next?

Settings for wireless network connections are actually stored in two separate places on your Mac, so in addition to the correct advice offered by Jolly Giant, you will also need to delete old network listings in KeyChain Access.
Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > KeyChain Access
Locate the name of the wireless network that you want to delete and click it to highlight it
    Click Delete on your keyboard
It would be a good idea to go ahead and also delete the current connection as well in case it has become corrupted. This will clear out the old settings and when you next connect to the network and enter the password, the new settings will be preserved.

  • New Airport express not finding wireless network

I just got a new AX plugged it in it was recognized did the set up and said to update. It went through the update but the amber light kept flashing. After the update I also lost my internet connection. I have to re-establish my internet connection each time it goes through the update. I have tried the hard boot to the factory specks three times and it still will not recognize my network. I just want to use it to play itunes through my stereo. I am not a computer person so this is very frustrating to me

You will want to configure your AX to "join" the wireless network created by your 2Wire router.
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or temporarily connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
    AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
    o Network Name: <existing 2Wire's wireless network>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • Macbook will not see wireless network

My new Macbook will not see my wireless network. My Windows 2000 PC, my Ipod touch and my Macbook Pro (jaguar) all see it no problem and work well with it.
I have tried entering the network name manually and it does not work. I have WEP password protection.
The macbook sees and connects to all other wireless networks I've encountered (father-in-law's house, Airport departure lounges, hotspots etc.). The macbook also sees my neighbours networks no problem.
    I am confused, please help.

I am having the same issue, a friend visited with his new Mac Mini, running Leopard, and it would not see the wireless network, that 3 other macs (PowerBook G4, iBooks G4 and G3) running Tiger (10.4.11) and Windows machines recognize without problem.
I'm wondering if the issue is Leopard and 3rd party routers or MY router in particular, as I have a US Robotics 5461, and I remember when a previous roommate replaced her G4 iBook, running Tiger, with a MacBook Intel running Leopard, she also had issues connecting wirelessly.
My friend's Mini had no problem recognizing all the neighbors networks (at least 4 or 5) and I'm pretty sure they are not Mac users with an Airport Base Station.
I was hoping to upgrade my G4 PowerBook (once I get it repaired) to Leopard in the future, but I don't want to lose the ability to connect to my wireless network.
Has anyone running Leopard run into this problem and found a solution?

  • [Solved] Wicd not finding wireless networks

I have a Belkin Wireless G USB key and can't get it to find any networks.  The wiki said the driver was built into the kernel, so I'm guessing it should work with no problems.  I followed the wiki on installing wicd, and while wicd finds and connects to my wired connection, it's not showing any wireless networks.  Is there something I should be editing that wasn't mentioned (or I failed to notice)?
Edit: Got it.  Ran 'dmesg > eek' and read through it, found out I was missing the firmware.  What confused me was that the firmware wasn't the one mentioned in the wiki.  Nonetheless, works now.

Having similar problems with my ageing G5and 10.5.8.
Sometimes get a 3 band wireless /fast connection to my network but at other times when waking from sleep get nothing. I have to reboot my airport extreme base station and the Netgear router and then the G5 can see the network again.
Recently had an issue with the G5 not recognizing the wireless password (WPA 2 personal) without logical reason.
    I did a Keychain First Aid verify/repair.
Now back on a 3 band wireless and for now all seems fine.

  • HT3728 TIme capsule not recognized on network

    Hi
I set up my Time Capsule and did the first back-up with Time Machine and then decided to see if I could make Time Capsule go wireless -- it worked -- so I unplugged Time Capsule and moved it to a different location, off the desk and now Time Capsule is not recognized by the network. Has anyone else had this problem?

How is the TC connected to the network now and how was it connected before you moved it??
Do you still use internet via the TC? Is it working for internet connection but not backups?
What mode is the TC in.. ? Router, bridged or extend wireless.. join wireless?

  • Not recognizing wireless keyboard/trackpad/mouse

Just installed windows 7 on new 2012 imac.  loaded the support software. still not recognizing the mac's wireless keyboard, trackpad, or mouse.  what should I try??

    hi
the N70 mouse has a USB dongle to connect to
    Spoiler (Highlight to read)
You may be able to connect the mouse but the Keyboard should be a pair SK8861
The SK8861 mouse and keyboard should be a pair because the USB dongle for both is in the SK8861 mouse.
Im not sure If you can pair the SK8861 keyboard with the n70 USB dongle.
But here's how to pair the keyboard. you can try this out with the N70 usb dongle.
Make sure that the keyboard is very close to the dongle when pairing
     1. Unplug the dongle from the computer
     2. Remove the battery
     3. Hold the F2 F3 and F4 keys on the keyboard all throughout the process
     4. Use your left had put the battery in but do not put the keyboard battery cover yet.
     5.  Left hand still, plug in the USB dongle then right away put the keyboard battery cover
Light will blink but once it stopped you can now let go of the F2 F3 and F4 keys and try the keyboard out.
If this does not work You might need to conatct where you bought it and ask about the keyboard and mouse, that it should come in pair" sk8861 mouse and keyboard.

  • Access connections does not see wireless networks but can connect if you know the SSID

Running a Thinkpad x200 using windows 7 and Access Connections 5.42.
A few weeks ago i was traveling and was connecting to a hotel wireless network.
Could receive email but wasn't able to send email due to hotel port restrictions so long-story short version-- IT staff at hotel told me to connect via LAN. Which i did by simply plugging in LAN line to the thinkpad and to the hotel -- port -- no other changes. have done this a million times at home and elsewhere.
    All is well....
    until....
I get home and i notice that when i use access connections, it doesn't see any wireless connections (no icons in the radar screen). It automatically connects to my home network and i can use the home profile to connect.  Same for any connection that i know the SSID for -- i can't see it but i can connect to it.
But it doesn't show any icons during "find" or find again. It only shows the home icon i am connected to. If i disconnect and try to find wireless networks. It doesn't show any.
    So i know
    1) radio is working
    2) can connect via lan
    3) can connect to a known wireless if i know the SSID and either manually configure it or if i have the profile saved
    4) i have run antivirus, malwarebytes - etc -- all clean
    5) have rebooted, turned radio on off
    6) system restore doesn't help
    7)  all wireless networks are now invisible to radar screen. Have tried this at starbucks, around town - etc -- available wireless network icons are invisible
I'm not sure that hooking up LAN in the hotel did anything but it seems too coincidental. Also seem to recall a thread where this has been known to happen.
    Help!!!

First off, it sees the networks. That's good. You reset network settings which usually corrects a number of problems. Let's focus on your home network and getting connected to that.
    1. Reboot your router (just power it off for 10 secs). Try to connect. If it works, you are done. If not, step 2
    2. Reset your network settings again. However, this time log onto your network by tapping Settings > WiFi > Other and re-entering your network name, security settings, and password.
Check your connection by tapping the blue > next to the network name with the checkmark. If your IP starts with 169.x, then you are connected but your router is not issuing you an IP address. This leads to a couple of additional problem areas - WEP encryption and outdated router firmware.
If you continue to have problems, tell us which router/model, security settings used, etc.

  • Can print via usb, but not via wireless network

My new MacBook Pro prints to my Epson RX500 when the printer is connected via USB to the MBP. However, when the the printer is connected by USB to my desktop PC running XP, the MBP does not print to it. I can see disks and transfer files wirelessly among desktop PC, laptop PC & MBP. The MBP finds the RX500 on the network, and has a driver for it. I can set it as the Mac's default printer. When I print, say from OpenOffice or TextEdit, the dialogs seem ok. Sometimes I see the print queue icon wink in and out on the dock. But the document doesn't get printed. The desktop says the printer is shared, and I can print over the wireless network from my PC laptop running XP.
One of the Apple troubleshooting pages suggests that I should have the same driver version on my XP desktop and my Snow Leopard MBP. I don't know how to tell what version the PC is running.
    Any suggestions?

Just to be sure - you know that you can't use Epson's "USB-only" driver for printing to a Windows-shared printer?
You must use the Gutenprint driver - that's why Apple included the Gutenprint drivers in OS X.

  • MacBook pro does not detected wireless network?????

Hi! I have an airport express that provides the wireless network for the house. My iMac and iBook as well as iphone have no problem detecting the network. But the network does not show up in the drop down list that shows up when I turn the airport on. When I click on "other" and type in the information that way, the connection times out.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated!
    Thx!

I have a similar problem. When I set the network to not be closed, My MacBook Pro finds and connects when I return from being away. When I set the network to be "closed", it will not connect automatically (I have checked "Remember and network this computer has joined" & "Remember this Network ") it will not join automatically. However, when I enter the name and password, it connects and all is well. My iPhone will automatically connect regardless of the "closed" being checked or not. Any suggestions? I would prefer to retain the "closed" setting for extra security.
    Thanks,
    Bruce

  • Why isn't my macbook pro 10.6.7 not recognizing my network automatically?

My macbook pro 10.6.7 is not recognizing my home network automatically and instead sings me on to another network when I open my mac. How can I correct this? it wasn't doing this before.
    thank you.

    Matrix
In system prefs you can go to network, you will see airport listed, go to the advanced setting and make sure remember networks you have joined is checked. You can also remove networks you do not want your Mac to join. You can also check to automatically find networks. As well, you can reconfigure your network by choosing the assist me option.

  • Macbook Pro will not remember wireless network

We have two Macbook Pros and are having issues with one of them not finding and then not remembering a particular wireless network.  The other one works normally on this network, as do our iPad and iPhones.
The problem Macbook Pro will find a number of other wireless networks in the vicinity, but not the one we wish to connect with.  However, when the required information about the network is entered into the Network Preferences, it does see the network and will connect with it, until the computer is shut down.  When it is powered-up again, the Macbook will not find it, even though, in theory, it had been told to remember it and that network had been moved up to #1 in the order of priority.
The settings on both Macbooks are the same, so why can one find and remember the network and the other not?  What can I do about the problem?
    Help please!

Settings for wireless network connections are actually stored in two separate places on your Mac, so in addition to the correct advice offered by Jolly Giant, you will also need to delete old network listings in KeyChain Access.
Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > KeyChain Access
