Two basic, related questions about external HDs and trashing/erasing
I have a couple of questions about using an external hard drive that I can't seem to get answered by surfing around. They'll probably seem stupid and basic, but ... Here they are:
1. When you drag a file from your external hard drive to the trash, does that file actually transfer to the main hard drive's trash, and thus the main hard drive? For instance, say I'm deleting a 4 GIG file. Will I temporarily add 4 GIGs to my main drive in the process of deleting it?
2. With a multipartitioned ext. drive, can you erase the contents of a single partition with the disk utility, thus bypassing having to drag-trash everything on that partition?

G5 iMac Mac OS X (10.4.2) Powerbook (10.4.6)1. No. The files are moved to an invisible .Trash directory on the external volume. No copying of data takes place between volumes when you move stuff to the trash.
2. Yes. You can use Disk Utility to erase or securely erase just a single Volume on a disk, leaving the other volumes unaffected. Simply click on the name of the Volume in the left pane of Disk Utilitly, click on the Erase tab in the right pane, and choose the options you want for erasing the volume. -

Hey guys,
So after I realized there is no way of retreiving my whatsapp msgs and history from my stolen droid, I have another question, seemignly a more simple one:
If I lost my phone 2.5 months ago and havn't installed whatsapp on my new phone since then (on my friend's whatsapp it still says that I was "Last seen online on 01/08/13"), so is it possible that somehow I will be able to get the messages ppl sent me from that date until now? I mean the messages would all be marked as unread and since I did not sign in from any other phone, I wonder if those msgs (only from the last 2 months) are still availible for me to receive them from a new phone upon signing in.
Again, I am not talking about mesages that were there forever and been read before the phone was stolen, only those which nobody read after it was stolen. Would greatly appriciate if anyone knows if and how to get those precious messages.

[Solved] A note and question about slow hostname lookups
I reinstalled Arch recently and the first thing I noticed was slow resolve times on hostname lookups. This didn't happen on all webpages but did on about 50% of them. This also happened on downloads from pacman %100 percent of the time. I have done a good bit of research and most of the points led to nssswich. One website said to try using this in nsswitch.conf:
hosts: files[NOTFOUND=continue UNAVAIL=continue] dns [NOTFOUND=continue UNAVAIL=continue TRYAGAIN=return] nis
With this it appears (after about 20 minutes of testing) that firefox lookups are again behaving normal again. However, pacman is still having slow lookups (about 30 seconds for each package). Does anyone know what could be the problem here. I dont' know much about nsswitch or how it could be the problem. Is there a way to help return pacman to regular lookup times?

I use the hosts files to to block advertisements which is the stuff trailing on the end and continuing. Think there might be a problemt here? -

I was wondering what is the exact meaning of the FontMetrics.getAscent() method. The documentation says that "The font ascent is the distance from the font's baseline to the top of most alphanumeric characters".
1. So, It's not possible to calculate the ascent of a single char like 'g' ?
2. FontMetrics.getAscent() returns an integer, but what does exactly mean this number? Pixels?
Another related question about typography in Java:
Is it possible to print a char with some rotation? e.g. print 'g' with a rotation of 90 degrees.

RogerActually, technically, you probably can't get the ascent of 'g'....
From the API docs...
"The ascent is the distance from the baseline to the ascender line. The ascent usually represents the the height of the capital letters of the text. Some characters can extend above the ascender line."
So it more or less is this:

descent --- ###* leading, in the Java APIs docs, appears to be from descent to ascent, but I'm thinking (it's been a while) that this is not the proper traditional definition of leading. I thought it as from baseline to baseline. What they call leading I think is really line gap, but I forget the exact details.

Question about navigation in session scope

I dont know how to resolve a problem or how to focus this stuff.
I'll try to explain myself.
Let say I have a page (a.jsf) with several links, all this links navigates to the same page (b.jsf) which shows the results.
For each link in a.jsf I have attached a bean with a logic, so If I click in link 1 I go to the b.jsf showing data read from the database.table1. If I clik in link2 I go to b.jsf showing data read from database.table2, and so on...
The beans are in session scope (and must be).
The first time works ok because I initialize the bean in b.jsf, read data and I show using a selecManyListBox to show it, but if I go back and select another link it goes to b.jsf, but it shows the old data, the data read the first time, because it never calls again the init method.
Somebody has talked about using an additional bean to control this but once the bean in b.jsf is created I don't know how to call again the init method in beanB (b.jsf)..
I have attached a very simple project to deploy in eclipse 3.3 and tomcat 6.0. In this example instead of read from database I read from an structure created in memory to simulate this.
Somebody could take a look and comment something about it.

Questions about 1003051 - TDMS 3.0 corrections - Composite SAP Note
Experts:
We, from a big SAP shop, want to set up TDMS for ERP, BI, HCM and CRM.
We have some questions about note 1003051:
1) Is this note about ERP (and HCM) only? If so, what are the notes for TDMS on BI and CRM?
2) Should we apply this note to all systems involved: sender, controller (SM7.0 in our case) and receiver?
3) We have enhp1...enhp4 in our ERP (and HCM), enhp1 on BI and perhaps enhp1 on CRM (not sure yet).
a) What is the impact of enhp on TDMS?
b) should we install TDMS before applying enhp OR the sequence does not matter?

"deafult search engine on a new tab" - this thread was closed but I have a related question. [the word “default” is spelled as it on the thread] Once you put the new url in, what then? Close it? When tried, it did not work. The closest answer is noted here. Instructing to go to about:fig. Specifically, I installed the accuweather add=on and it took over my tab home page - the one that comes up when you click for a new tab. I didn't like it so I clicked the button to remove it and the page went blank. I searched to see out to restore the tab page, tired the reply at this page :

How can I delete my iCloud account which I do not remember anything about the information that I entered about 4 years ago. It always asks my birth date but it seems I did not enter my correct date how can I bypass this question???
You cannot delete the account from the server (partly to prevent the username from becoming available again and some-one else using it to pretend to be you).. Having disengaged your devices from it, go to http://icloud.com and delete any data in there such as contacts and calendars. Then just ignore it.

I have a Macbook Pro june 2011... I have 8GB ram but I only have 256mb VRAM...
I've read some other questions about this and I realized... Why do I not have 560mb of VRAM since I have 8GB of RAM?
Is there any way to get more VRAM to play games on steam?
I've learned by reading other topics that I can't upgrade my graphics card on my Macbook Pro because it's soldered into the motherboard or somthing like that, but please tell me if there is any way to get more video ram by chaning some setting or upgrading something else. I'd also like to know why I only have 256MB of VRAM when I have 8GB of RAM, since I have 8GB of RAM I thought I was supposed to have 560mb of VRAM...

DylanThe only two items that a user can change on a MBP are the RAM and HDD (Retinas not included). You have what the unit came with and the only way you will be able to change that is to purchase a MBP with superior graphics
If you are very much into gaming, the I suggest A PC. They are far superior for that type of application to a MBP.

Can't find out how to organize my bookmarks. can't do it after updating. Person tried to help, we had long conversations, I sent lots of images, it got to where I think the answer given were not related to the problem. I asked for help from a technician or to give my emails to one. She won't do it and I can't get help. So I'm starting over. It shouldn't be this hard. I need someone else to help me.

You say you have a lot of duplicate bookmarks, and want to know how to organize bookmarks, but from the pictures shown, I really only see a news subscription, some sample bookmarks in the bookmarks toolbar that you don't display on the toolbars so I don't see point in deleting anything there most of it are reports from the database or from a news subscription nothing of much concern, really. I would dump the news subscription if you don't use it.
How do you want to arrange your bookmarks, but you must keep within some boundaries of what was expected of the three major folders.
Bookmarks Menu -- this is your folder categorized bookmarks, originally all bookmarks were in this folder and the bookmarks toolbar was one folder within -- that has changed.
Bookmarks Toolbar -- intended to be visible on the toolbar with main bookmarks and folders spread out horizontally to save one level of drilling down into folders, with very few bookmarks and folders visible on the toolbar but quickly accessed. You can use the bookmarks showing essentially as buttons a few primary bookmarklets. You can have folder structure there so you could actually have thousands of bookmarks there within folders.
Unsorted Bookmarks (no folders within by intent not by restriction) -- new concept to not categorize bookmarks into folders because of bookmark tagging. Delicious.com will show you what they intended where you have lots of people. I think the concept of tagging breaks down with one person. The other reason bookmarks no longer had to be put into folders was the "AwesomeBar" feature of Firefox that is a great feature it will find bookmarks whatever folder they are in -- I hope you are familiar with it. You can throw bookmark separators into any folder but they are especially useful in the unsorted bookmarks folder, especially if you sort the folder. In other words a group probably within a date range.
So how do you see yourself categorizing your bookmarks ?
I'd like to get an idea of '''how many bookmarks '''you have altogether and how big your places.sqlite file is. To find out how many bookmarks you have all together bring up the Bookmarks Library list, place a colon (":") into the search field this will do a find on all of your bookmarks. At the bottom of the library window you will see the total number of bookmarks you may have to nudge the vertical scrollbar down, and as long as no bookmarks are selected you will see an '''item count'''.
Open your profile folder Help > Troubleshooting information... then click on "Open containing folder" then looking in bookmarkbackups folder and report size of last .json file in there -- hope you can see the extension the filenames have dates.
From the library list you can see if you actually do have a lot or any duplicated by eyeballing the list sorted by the location. You don't want to delete anything yet until you know what you want to do and what folders the bookmarks actually in, as you would not want to delete a categorized bookmark for an uncategorized one.
I have 1256 bookmarks, a bookmarks backup file (.json) is 1849 KB.
I have 750 of those bookmarks have a keyword shortcut -- most of my bookmarks may not actually be bookmarks to webpages.
Install the "Show Parent Folder" extension, it would be important for manually categorizing and deleting bookmarks.

At some point you will want to install the "Sort Places" extension that allows you to sort folders recursively in a matter of seconds. Only sort when you want to sort, never automatically.

The columns in the bookmarks library list that I show are
:Name, Location, Parent Folder, visit date, visit count, Keyword, Description, Last Modified
The important columns for eliminating duplicates are
:Name, Location, Parent Folder, Keyword, Description
:if you have Tags then that column would also be important not to delete the bookmark
Sort on Location look for duplicates, expect you won't find as many as you thought you would, because Firefox makes it difficult to create duplicates if you use the bookmarks star. I wouldn't delete any until you really know what you want to do, if you have duplicate you would not want to delete one a primary location based on parent directory or the one you use with a keyword.
I don't really think you have much to delete in your toolbars list, they are basically examples. Would highly recommend you keep something in the bookmarks toolbar even though you are not displaying it.
The only case of having major duplicates are if you have imported bookmarks at the bottom of your bookmarks menu also named bookmarks menu or something similar. You would see that in the parent folder column -- you cannot sort on the parent folder column.
