Not rendering before making iDVD project

OK, by reading the post, it appears that the culprit for bad photo quality when making a photo slideshow in iMovie then going to iDVD is the iMovie render process.
So, when I hit the iDVD button is it OK to not render and make go right to iDVD?

Hello NH Sullivan,
You've opened up a can of worms here! The images, when import into iMovie, are rendered as movie files, thus greatly reducing the quality of images. It is not iDVD that distorts the images. The best solution is to create a slideshow in iPhoto, export it to Quicktime and then import the slideshow into iMovie for titles and music. - Perfect every time!
iPhoto won't let you create a one photo slideshow. If you only want one image add the same photo twice to an iPhoto slideshow. You will have drag the image out of iPhoto and change the name. Then drop it back into iPhoto. Turn the Ken Burns effect turn Off and no transition you'll have a 6-20 second still (static) movie of your image that you can export to Quicktime and add to you iMovie project for editing without any compramise in image quality. You can make the two image slideshow as long as you want and cut the length down iMovie. You'll need about 6 seconds minimum to add transitions in and out.
Have fun!

  • Not able to archive iDVD project

I cannot get iDVD to archive my project. I get the error message "there was an error while saving the project". I found a couple of discussions on this very error message, both led to insufficient disc storage. This doesn't seem to be an issue in my case and I am unable to figure out what the issue is. I have burned the project first to a disc image and from there to 2 DVDs, both without a problem. I want to archive the project in case I want to change to wide screen formating in the future. OK here's the low-down. The project info window gives the size of the project as 2.24 GB and the available space on my HD as 283.9 GB, when I attempt to archive, the drop down window gives the size as 7.543 GB. Color me ignorant, and you can use dark shades when it comes to this stuff, but isn't that plenty of room? And what's up with discrepancy in project size? The primary "asset" is an iMovie that weighs in at 8.17 GB prior to being exported to iDVD and consists of still photos out of iPhoto with transitions and other edits all rendered in iMovie, so no permission issues I can ascertain. Thanks for your assistance.

Thanks F Shippey… I am attempting to save the archive to my internal HD. I attempted to save to an external drive that is formated for Mac OSX to see if that made a difference but came to the same conclusion, the same error message. Per one of the discussions referenced in my original post, I checked the cable to the exterior drive, it is an OSB cable, not the preferred Firewire, but is that really significant? Both drives have plenty of space left if seems to me. Is this the only line of inquiry there is to this issue? I did attempt to archive another iDVD project that I'd created a while ago to see what happened, but, no surprise, some of the assets couldn't be found and I couldn't retrieve them. I am leery of this project ending up the same way. T.T.

  • Portrait orientation not recognised in Older iDVD project

I have posted some of these symptoms in various places, but I have had so many issues with this upgrade that I haven't had the time to thoroughly address each on in detail.
I upgraded ti iLife06 over the weekend and now an iDVD project that I started in iDVD 5 is significantly "messed up".
Firstly, it cannot find the images in the new iPhoto Library's new paradigm for folder management. So I have to locate these manually. I have tried to point iDVD to both the "Modified" iPhoto Library folder and the "Originals". Not sure which is correct. (I know that some have advised duplicating your old iPhoto library and pointing iDVD 6 to the "old" version)
Second, after manually locating all of the photos included in the iDVD project, iDVD does not seem to recognise that some of the photos are Portrait orientation. These were automatically rotated by my camera and imported into iPhoto accordingly.
Does anyone have an idea why iDVD 6 cannot do this AND how to fix it?
    Thanks,
    J.E. Flynn

  • Can't not open a previous iDVD project

I have wedding project that I completed in March. I wanted to burn another copy. I double clicked, I tried to open in iDVD. It quickly loads themes and then the window pops "create new project, open existing project, etc. Can anyone help on this matter? It was stored on the Lacie hardrive and then I put it on my desktop. It would not open.

    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Do you have one of the DVDs that you burned in March?
If so, you can use that to burn another by making a Disk Image using Disk Utility:
    Creating a disk image
You can use Disk Utility to create a disk image of a disk, volume, or folder. You can use disk images to move files from one computer to another or to send to other people in email messages.
You can also use a disk image to burn a CD or DVD disc to send to other people or to back up the contents of your disk so that you can restore it if something happens to your information.
When you create a disk image you choose the format of the image:
If you want to continue adding files to the disk image after it's created, choose read/write.
If you don't need to add more files to the disk image, choose read-only.
If you don't need to add more files to the image and you want to conserve space, choose compressed . The disk image takes up only as much space as the data on the image.
If you want to use the disk image with a third-party application, choose CD/DVD master. The disk image contains a copy of all sectors of the disk, whether they're used or not, and copies them to other CDs or DVDs bit for bit.
You can also create a blank disk image so that you can copy files to it later. See "Creating a blank disk image" for more information.
Be sure the files you want to protect are in the same folder in the Finder.
To create a disk image from a disk or volume, select it in the list of disks and volumes.
Choose File > New then the type of image you want to create.
To create a disk image from a folder, choose “Disk Image from Folder.” Select the folder you want, then click Image.
To create a disk image from a disk or volume, choose "Disk Image from disk name."
Type a name for the image and choose where you want to save the image.
Choose one of the disk formats from the Image Format pop-up menu.
To require a password to access the contents of the image, choose "AES-128 (recommended)" from the Encryption pop-up menu.
    Click Save.
If you chose to use a password, enter it in the dialog that appears.
The name of the disk image is followed by the filename extension ".dmg."
Once you have created a disk image from your prior DVD, you can use that disk image to burn more copies of the DVD:

  • How can I see which purchased items are not transferred before making an update?

When I try to update I get the:
"There are purchased items on the iPad “Yours iPad” that have not been transferred to your iTunes library. You should transfer these items to your iTunes library before updating this iPad. Are you sure you want to continue?"
I have done a back-up and have in iPhotos transferred all non-importated images, so I just don't know what isn't there and what I will loss.
How can I see what it is that I am missing?
Can it have anything to do with that my boyfriend have downloaded some apps using his own apple account, and that these might therefore not have been back-uped?

  • XAML not rendering images in Silverlight Project

So I working on creating a Windows Phone port of our current iOS and Android apps and when I started a new project I find that when using a Windows Phone Silverlight project none of the images that I add to the project show up in the XAML designer, but
they do show up when I run the app on a device or simulator. Now if I create plain Windows Phone project the images show up in the XAML designer and simulator without any issues. Is there something wrong/different with the Silverlight project that doesn't
render images in the designer and if so how can that be changed? I need to use the Silverlight version since the web services that are used are older WSDL and the Silverlight projects are the only ones that have the "Add Service Reference" option.
    Thanks.

  • IDVD project

I used IDVD for my photos and videos, but when I burn them in them the video and audio does not synchronize

Yes. The iDVD project file only references the media files used in it.  If you want to keep all of the files together with the iDVD project use the File ➙ Archive Project menu option.  That will copy all of the media files used in the project into the project package.
Then you can delete the original versions of the media files from the hard drive.
If saving disk space is your intent you won't be saving space with that method.

  • Do clips need to be rendered before exporting project to video camera?

I am in the process of exporting an Imovie project back to my video camera for storage on a tape. When I start the export process I get a message that says clips need to be rendered prior to exporting. When I click the button to render clips Imovie goes through the process of rendering the clips and after several minutes the Imovie project starts to export to the camera and runs for about 2 seconds and the Imovie quits.
Imovie also gives the option of not rendering the clips.
Do i need to render the clips before exporting them to my video camera?
iMac4,1   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Intel Core Duo, 1.83 GHz

Does the project reside on an external drive? If so, make sure the drive uses the Mac OS Extended disk format, which iMovie requires.
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4176921#4176921
The crashes are most likely occurring because of external factors, not because of a flawed rendering routine. These can include the wrong disk format, QuickTime add-ons and obsolete iMovie plug-ins.

Do i need to render the clips before exporting them to my video camera?
It may depend on what type of clips they are. If they are photos imported with the Ken Burn checkbox turned OFF — which are not rendered as they are imported — iMovie will ask to render them. Do NOT allow iMovie to render the photos at this time for there's a bug that adds lots of jaggies to the images, reducing their quality.

  • Error in rendering/encoding in iDVD v 7.1.2 with MacMini & music in intro not playing

I am having some difficulty in creating a DVD in iDVD.  I've created  50+ home DVDs before, but now I am getting this error message every time:
    Error in rendering/encoding
"There was an error during rendering/encoding of the menus/slideshows. The burning process has been canceled."
My process is the same every time:
    1.  I use iMovie and export the movie,
    2.  Add it into a new iDVD project, add music etc.
    3. Click Burn
I have cleared the iDVD cache, tried to recreate the project several times, tried to save the project as a disc image or video_ts folder and get the same error every time.
Additionally, I cannot get any music from itunes to play in the intro.  I've tried music from itunes purchases and music i've added via my cds.  I've never had an issue either playing in the intro before.
I am wondering if my DVD burner gave out.  If so, is there a way to check that?  Can I create the DVD image up to the point of burning and use homesharing to burn onto another Mac in the house (none of them have iDVD, but all can burn)?
    Help!
    Janetta

What version of iMovie are you using and how are you exporting out of iMovie to iDVD?
Where is your iTunes library located.  Some have reported problems with getting iTunes tracks to play when the library was on an external HD.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
If you can create a disk image of the project that will play with DVD Player then we've narrowed down the problem to the burn process.
Can you burn a DVD data disk via the finder?

  • IMovie "Create iDVD Project" Button Opens Previous, not Current Movie/Proj

I updated my non-Intel iMac to Leopard a year or so ago. Since then, my wife says when she works on a project in iMovie and is done she clicks on Create iDVD Project button and when iDVD opens it opens the last movie she was working on (over a year ago) before we upgraded to Leopard. iDVD does not open the movie that she is currently working on in iMovie. This worked before we switched to Leopard. I have 10.5, iDVD 5 & iMovie 5. Is this a compatibility issue with Leopard? She told me about this when we switched to Leopard but I ignored her. Now I have to find the answer.

I have seen report that iMovie 5 won't even run under Leopard.
What you might try is avoid clicking on the "Create iDVD project" button in iMovie. Instead you save the project and quit iMovie. Launch iDVD, create a new project and drag the iMovie project from the Finder into the iDVD window.

  • IDVD6 and iPhoto6 installation rendered older iDVD projects useless

Had some iDVD5 projects in progress and then installed iLife6. Can't open the older iDVD projects with iDVD6, all iPhotos are missing and the system does not seem to be able to find them again. This is because the file stucture of iPhoto6 is different from the one in iPhoto5.
Worse, iDVD6 eventually hangs up and needs to be force-quit.
After this happens, iDVD6 always tries to open the old project, hangs up, etc. Deleting the preference file is the only option to get to iDVD6 again.
Does anybody have a solution? How can I use my older iDVD projects? How can I help iDVD6 to find the missing iPhoto files?
    Dual G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Did you backup your iPhoto Library before upgrading?
If so, you can do some renaming to get iDVD to point to the 'old' iPhoto Library that has the structure that iDVD needs to access it. I am sorry that I cannot get the exact instructions to you right now...look in iPhoto for posts addressing this. The poster Old Toad has specific directions...he is one of iPhoto's gurus...and you will probably be able to get your photos into iDVD again.

  • 'project must be rendered before it can be encoded'

Why do I always get the message 'project must be rendered before it can be encoded' when I try to export using quicktime conversion to product an mpeg2 for DVD Studio Pro?

Beeeeeecause the project must be rendered before it can be encoded.
Based on my experience, this is the workflow you should use for going from Final Cut Pro to DVD:
    1. Finish your project. You'd be amazed how many people forget this step.
    2. Export a QuickTime reference movie. That is to say, do "Export" then "QuickTime Movie," but leave the "make self-contained" box unchecked.
    3. Drop the resulting QuickTime onto Compressor.
    4. Select one of the DVD encoding presets, based on the length of your material. Use one of these:
    DVD: Best Quality 150 minutes
    DVD: Best Quality 120 minutes
    DVD: Best Quality 90 minutes
    5. The encode will go as fast as it can, depending on how you set up Compressor. If you're using eight processors, it'll go pretty darned fast.
    6. Drop the resulting ".m2v" and ".ac3" files onto the "assets" window in DVD Studio Pro. Place them on a track, and finish your DVD just like you would under any other circumstances.

  • Project is not rendering

My project is not rendering. The orange colored indicators in the timeline will not go away.
The background task window was spinning for at least two hours without giving the percentage. Now- I don't know how- it just indicates 58 percent. It's not spinning and has not changed since last night.
I searched for a way to start and stop rendering. I couldn't figure it out.
I'm working with an iMac 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7, Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2. My video is on a Pegasus R4 external drive connected via Thunderbolt.

Exactly, it slows down FCPX, I only render when I need to, and about slow, it is best to keep only one project available. Here is good and cheep Software to move project from FCPX

  • IDVD project not playing

Using my main iMac computer and iDVD software, I have just completed my fifth attempt to make an DVD project. I am unable to have a disc that plays... error message says that I'm inserting a 'blank disc'.. but if you look closely, one can see the project has been burned onto the DVD disc.
I've used  13 pieces of .mov footage (Project is a short documentary, with 12 x  individual stories -- all 13 pieces of .mov footage were compressed with FCP7, taken from the full documentary); one .jpg pic as a drop-in on the main menu; and I used the Sunflower template with chapters.  This project works when I use the Preview feature.
I finished the project, and burned a copy (and I repeated this five times, as I couldn't get the disc to work (checking the Preferences, and Project Info for settings: burn speed 1x, with High Quality encoding - not, Professional quality).
I put this copy into my MacBook Pro, but the disc won't read - says it s a blank disc. I've repeated this several times, but not had any luck yet, to make a playable DVD (and I need it to play on both Mac and PC computers).
I"ve even burned this as a Disc Image, and opened with VLC, and the file plays...... but, now what...?
I cannot get a disc that plays, even in my Macbook Pro.  I would be grateful for your advice.

    Hi
Sorry to say - I'm not clever enough to follow Your steps.

May be it can help You.
    FCE/P to iDVD
    Several things
    • How to go from FCE/P to iDVD
    • Free space on Start-up hard disk
    • Encoding
    • Brand and type of DVDs used
    • Burn speed set
    • iDVD BUG
    • Chapters
How to go from FCE/P to iDVD I do
    • Disable Screen and Energy saver
    • IMPORTANT --> FIRST in FinalCut - Mix Down Audio under Sequence Menu / Render Only / Mix-down
    • Export out as a QuickTime .mov file
    • Select with Mark - Chapter Mark
    • Not as Self-Contained (not important but saves time and space)
    • NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION (IMPORTANT)
This QT.mov file I import into iDVD from within iDVD.
Free space on Start-up hard disk
I set a minimum of 25GB (for Mac OS and iDVDs temp files)
    Encoding
    • I use Pro Quality encoding
Brand and type of DVDs used
    • I use Verbatim
    • I use DVD-R
    Burn speed set
    • I set down this to x4 (or x1) - never any faster as this use to give BAD DVDs
    iDVD BUG
    • One can not go back to movie-project for any alterations and then go back to
the iDVD project. It will notice and ask You to either Up-date or Cancel. Neither
    of them will work.
Medicine - Start a brand new iDVD project.
    Use of Chapters
    • I only use a to z and 0 to 9 in naming them. NO other symbol/letter !
    • NO Chapter-mark at very beginning - iDVD NEEDS TO set this by it self
    • No Chapter marks in or within two seconds from a transition
(Way around this last one - Export movie as QT full quality and NO Chapter marks
Import this into a new Movie-project and now You are free to set C-Ms where You want
them except at very beginning - still)
    Material used to build movie
    • video - I use streamingDV (or convert all other to this e.g. .mp4, .avi, .wmv etc)
    • audio - I use .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or from Audio-CD (44.1kHz) - no .mp3 or direct from iTunes
    • photos - I use .jpg - no .bmp etc
Trash iDVD pref. file and run Repair Permissions - and have a re-try.
    from post ??
May not be relevant, but I had the same problem with iDVD, where burned DVDs showed a green screen. It was cured by quitting Quicksilver and Quickeys as well as disabling sleep and screen-saving

I am having problems using mov files imported into a project. I get the message "Not rendered" in the Canvas and clip won't play. Can anyone help?

When clips won't play without rendering in the Timeline, it usually means that the clip's specs don't match the Sequence settings.
A .mov file could be made from any number of codecs; the QuickTime Movie designation is merely a container for video files of all kinds.  Since FCE only works with the QuickTime DV codec and the Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) natively, if your mov files aren't one of those two, you need to convert them PRIOR to importing into your FCE project.
