Not retaining iPhoto 'key photo'

I've been using the 'key photo' option in iPhoto so I can identify the content of the album by image, not just the title/description text. I've started using iWeb and want to add these albums. However, my choice of key photo is ignored by iWeb, and it chooses the first photo in the album instead. I don't want to change the order of the photos so iWeb makes the right decision.
Anyone know how to get iWeb to use the 'key photo' I've chosen in iPhoto?

That is just how iweb albums page works, 'key photo' in iPhoto has no effect in iweb. But you can change that with my javascript widget, see my post here:

  • In downloading my Events from iPhoto on my Mac to my iPad Air, the Events arrive in the proper order but not showing the Key Photo.  At the same time, the Events arrive in iPhoto on the iPad in totally random order but showing the Key Photo. Why?

In downloading my Events from iPhoto on my Mac to my Ipad Air, the Events arrive in Photos in the correct order but not showing the Key photo. At the same time, the Events arrive in iPhoto in a totally random order but with the Key phto showing. Why? of course and is there a way to shift the order in Iphoto and get a Key photo in Photos?

HHi, thank you for the reply. I have checked my iPad and iPhone and neither has iCloud Photo Library (Beta) enabled. Turned off in both. Photostream is turned on.
i tried to sort it out  by dragging all the photos to Events on the Mac and then deleting them from iCloud - (left hand side of iPhoto under the section 'Shared'). the photos now show up in Events. I did force quit but the issue remains. The message reads ' photos are bing imported to the library. Please wait for import to complete.'
i can't empty iPhoto trash either. The message read "Delete error. Please wait for import to complete.'
WHen I was moving the photos to the Events I always had a message about duplicates - to the effect that the photos already existed, did I want to import them? I clicked on Yes, import all duplicates. But when it showed the images - duplicates side by side - one showed the photo and the other was blank.
I really don't know what to do! And I don't know how to handle my iOS devices. Is it to do with the large number of photos? Any help, advice appreciated.

  • When syncing faces: names do not appear and key photo is distorted on iPad

I'm syncing from Aperture 3.0.3 to an iPad. I select a number of projects to sync, and some faces.
Most faces appear fine. However, there are a handful of faces with distorted key photos / thumbnails, and no name appears below them. Each key photo contains photos from an individual I selected, and appears in the correct alphabetical order, it just does not have the name.
With the exception of one face, these photos are of friends, of which I have not selected projects above. So I'm certain this is an issue where the iPad or iTunes has grabbed all photos for that person, and few if any of these photos are in the projects I selected above.
The other face that is distorted is my newborn daughter! I definitely have several albums selected with her in them.
    Any ideas?

I had something similar happen, albeit with a few differences. I'm syncing from iPhoto and I discovered that when viewing the list of faces one of the names was missing. All of the photos were there and the group was in the correct alphabetical order, but the name was missing.
I tried a bunch of things. I removed all photos from the iPad and resynced-- no joy. I renamed the face in iPhoto and resynced-- no joy.
Here is what did finally work for me, although it is such a kludge I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't work for everyone. First I went to the Photos tab in iTunes switched from 'All photos..' to 'selected..'. Then I unselected all albums, all events, and all faces except for the checkbox next to the name that was "missing" from the iPad's faces label for that person. I allowed it to sync, removing all of the photos except for the faces for that person. To my surprise, it was now properly named on the iPad.
Then I went back to iTunes, switched back to 'all photos..', synced again, and the face label was still present.

  • Iphoto - key photo won't set for an event on my iPad

I have placed my photos into "Events".  I have assigned a "key photo" to my events.  For some reason some key photos will show up as the key photo in iPhoto but when I sync with iTunes the key photo isn't the one I assigned or want on my iPad.  First I rebooted my Mac and my iPad and I even changed almost all the key photos successfully but a select few refuse to change on my iPad after being synced.
The key photo for one of the events WAS NEVER set as a key photo.
Very frustrated with my Mac products lately.
    Thank you,
    Terry
    IOS 10.9.3
    iTunes 11.2.1

One for the iPad forum, I think. iPhoto for Mac has no control over what happens on the iPad.

  • Yosemite did not update iPhoto to Photos on my Mac.

I updated to Yosemite and iPhoto did not turn into Photos. It's just crossed out in the menu. Photos is not in my app menu. So I can't look at any of my pictures.

Download and install the OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 Combo Update.

  • Photos previously shared to CD not importing with Event names or Key Photo??

I have a DVD that was Burned from the iPhoto '11 Share menu. When attempting to import an Event to an existing iPhoto Library, the images import but the Event Name is lost along with the Key Photo. Albums are not maintained either. Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Yes, I get the same thing.  The Event titles are lost are are the keywords. I did retain the key photo. My events are untitled.
Be sure to send a bug report to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.

  • Photo does not recognize iPhoto library

Photo did not automatically import iPhoto library. Could not export iPhoto to Photo?

  • MobileMe Gallery from A3 Does not Display Key Photo

When I post from Aperture 3 to MobileMe, the Gallery preview pic does not display the key photo anymore. Skimming still works, but the preview pic as seen in the gallery is not displayed. Instead of the preview picture, an icon is displayed that is gray with two stacked pictures.
If I go to me.com and manage the gallery from there, I do see a preview picture but not the key photo. Instead, I see the first photo from the project.
In Aperture 2, I did not see these behaviors.
    Anyone else seeing this problem?

    Yes, I noticed this too.
I can skim the gallery (like an event) but then it just gives a generic thumbnail as the key photo.

  • Key Photos missing for a third of my library

In events view, each event is supposed to have a key photo. Most of my library does, but part of the library (all events with dates between Jan 2007 and November 2007) does not have any key photos. These events are not different from other events (they all have normal JPEG photos, etc.). If I try to set a key photo, the event is still blank in events view.
    Any ideas?

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    If that fails:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
To back up: Copy the iPhoto Library in your Pictures Folder to another disk to back it up. You can use an app such as DejaVu or Chronosync to do incremental back ups of the Library. There are many other options: search on MacUpdate.

  • Key Photo

It appears that EVERYTIME there is an iPhoto update, it messes up the key photos in Events and Albums.
After updating to the latest version (9.4.2) of iPhoto on my MacBook Pro, the key photos do not match with the key photos in the Photos app of my iPhone and iPad. I have tried:
    1. setting up "key photos" (right clicking in a picture and setting it as key photo) and sync iOS via iTunes - didn't change anything
    2. deselected all events and albums and sync devices; and then selected to sync all events and albums (having over five thousand pictures to sync does take its time - approximately over two hours and a half) - but still did not change the key photos
    3. in iPhoto, adjusted date and time of the photo I wanted to assign as key photo so that it would be the first photo in each event and album - still did not change the key photos in iOS devices
Is there a way so that the key photos would be the same throughout all devices?

    Hi Tom,
    same problem.
I've already tried to rebuild the iPhoto database but nothing has changed.
I'm facing this issue with both iPhone 3GS (iOS 5.1.1) and iPad 2 (same iOS release) - iPhoto 9.4.2.
    Does anyone have a solution?
    thanks,
    Andrea

  • Is there a save option on iPhoto? Sometimes iPhoto does not retain the name on a face I've added to a photo.

Sometimes iPhoto does not retain the name on a face I've added to a photo. I have 'added a face' then flipped to the next picture then back to that picture and the label has disappeared.

No.  It's supposed to be automatic.  You might try repairing the library's database and then see if it still crops up now and then. If that doesn't help try rebuilding it the same way.
Launch iPhoto with the Option+Command keys held down and select the database repair option in the rebild window:
Then the rebuild option if necessary.

  • IPhoto -- In Event -- Key Photos not showing up

I choose the key photo, but the event still only shows the palm tree iphoto icon.
Most of my older events still show the key photos, but now I have several that only show the palm tree.
    Not sure why.
    Any ideas?

Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - from the resulting first aid window rebuild thumbnails and if needed repair permissions and if necessary rebuild your database

  • IPhoto 11 not retaining edits

Since upgrading to OSX Lion (currently using iPhoto 11 9.1.5), iPhoto is not retaining, or 'holding' edits once editing mode has been left.  In other words, if I go to edit, and crop (or touch-up, or adjust) a photo, as soon as I am NOT in editing mode -- any edits made will disappear.
The ONLY change which appears retained in iPhoto is rotation -- but if I attempt to share the photo (email, facebook), the original orientation will appear.
    Advice?

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • In iphoto my photos do no appear just a blank dated square. Somehow I messed up when trying to send a photo via email.I cannot not see any but 4 photos.

Help!   In iphoto my photos do not appear just a blank dated square. Somehow I messed up when trying to send a photo via email.I cannot not see any but 4 photos.I tried all of the solutions that Apple suggested. Somehow I think that i am trying to send ALL my photos in an email. How do i unhide all of my photos?

Did you launch iPhoto with the Option(Alt) and Commnad keys held down like Terence suggested?  If you did it properly you will get this window:
The second option is the one you want to run.

  • Photo not in iPhoto?

After uploading pics to iPhoto, I open some of the better ones in PE3 for "post processing." If it was originally a JPEG, I save it in exactly the same location (usually by date) it came from but with a different name, but still as a JPEG again. When I go back to iPhoto, my new saved pic is not there, although I can find it easily in Finder > Pictures > iPhoto Library. Any way to have these pics viewable when I open iPhoto? Thanks

    Hi Starnie,
Let me give you a lot more info than you asked for, but your answer is in the info.
--First thing to know and remember is this...Do not drag any images, folder of images into the iPhoto Library in the Finder. Images have to be imported into iPhoto within the application. Do not scan images and save them into the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder. Save them to another location such as the Pictures folder or even the desktop. You can then import them into iPhoto.
If you have already put files/folders in the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder then you will also find out that if you try to import them into iPhoto you will get an error message. No worry, just drag them to the desktop and import from there.
--All images that you import are shown in the library view. You can choose how you want to view, by rolls, by date, by rating, etc. When you put images in an Album, slideshow, book, etc, you are actually just putting pointers to those images in the library. You are not adding more images. If you delete an image from the Album it will still be in the library. If you delete an image from the library it is deleted from iPhoto's database and your hard drive (unless you have it backed up somewhere else)
--You have a folder of images on your hard drive and want to import them into iPhoto. Drag the folder of images into an open iPhoto Library window and the folder of photos will be copied into the library, resulting in a new roll with the name of the folder. You now have two copies of those photos, the ones in iPhoto's database and the ones on your desktop. You can keep the ones on your desktop that you just imported as backup or you can delete that folder.
-- you scan a picture/pictures and save it in a folder. You cannot scan directly into iPhoto or the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder.
You want all your photos in iPhoto so you import them into iPhoto.
Now you have two copies of that picture/pictures, so you can delete the originals that were in the scanned folder and keep the one/ones that were imported into iPhoto.
-- You download pictures from your camera into iPhoto.
There is now one copy of each of the pictures. (DO NOT HAVE IPHOTO DELETE THE IMAGES FROM YOUR CAMERA! DELETE THEM MANUALLY WITH THE CAMERA-if something goes wrong with the import and they are never imported and then they are deleted from the camera you might end up losing those images)
You want to change something about a picture you imported, such as
cropping it or changing the size, or changing the orientation.
Once you do that to a picture, you now have two copies of the picture
in iPhoto, the original and the edited one. The edited one will be in the library organize view. The original is packed away in an Original folder in your iPhoto Library folder under the date of the roll. You can always revert to the original by control clicking on the photo and choose "revert to orginal" You will not have this choice if you used iPhoto Diet to get rid of the Originals.
(a quick note on cropping within iPhoto...when you are in edit mode, you automatically will be in the crop mode with cross hairs to highlight the crop area. To finish cropping you must click the crop button and then go back to library view and your cropped picture will be there.
3.You want to use Photoshop or another graphic program to edit a picture in your iPhoto library.
You can open up prefs for iPhoto and choose "when double clicking on
photo ..do" choose "other" and select Photoshop. Now you can edit all
pictures in your iPhoto library in PhotoShop by double clicking. If you save the photo with the same name and as a flattened file it will be saved right into iPhoto and you will see the changes. If you don't want to save it into iPhoto then do a "save as" and save to the desktop. You will then have the original photo still in iPhoto and your new edited photo on the desktop.
Or, with iPhoto open, you can drag a picture from the library window
to your desktop (you see a + sign on the pic you are dragging). You now
have two of the same picture, one in the iPhoto library and one on your desktop. You can open up the one on your desktop in any graphic program and work on it. The one in iPhoto stays the same. You can also share/export the picture/pictures to your desktop or folder to work on them or do batch processing, etc. You will still have the originals in your iPhoto Library.
Or, you can open up the ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library/folders and option drag any
picture out of the folder to your desktop. Notice that you will see a plus sign while dragging the photo. This is copying the file to your desktop
I would advise anyone not to do this as they might forget to use the option key and drag the photo out. Next time you open iPhoto the photo will be missing.
Two Apple kbs for you to read
Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto library folder
    About the iPhoto Library folder
Don't forget that in Library view you can Control click on any picture and get a contextual menu with many options. One is to revert to original.
