What is going on with POP email? I can NOT retrieve email unless*...I reboot AND reset!* I POP 3 Comcast emails and my own URL email. Never any problems on Entourage. Hourly issues with my new iPhone—and it's only been 4 days.
This is *unbelievably frustrating* and negates why I got the dang thing in the first place.
Does anyone have a work around? Is this a known bug (Apple) or am I missing something?
+*Plus as a side note I think there are too many clicks into the In Box. Just a usability thing I wish I could set myself.+

I have the same problem intermittently... Every so often, the iPhone goes into a mode where email just doesn't work until i shut down and reboot... Then it works fine...
Its not always the case, but I can't isolate the scenario which causes it to go into this weird mode...

  • DROID X DOES NOT RETRIEVE EMAIL UNLESS POWERED OFF, THEN ON

I've identified through testing and confirmed that my 3 day old Droid X does NOT actually retrieve email from a third party (non Google) mail server WITHOUT having to power it down, then back up first.  Activating the cute little manual retrieving spinning circle, in fact, does NOTHING.
I have tested this a MILLION times after not getting emails.  MANUAL or SCHEDULED settings absolutely do not work.
I REPEAT, I do not receive  email unless powered off then on
I set the the following to no avail:
    * battery profile to "Performance"
    * Data Delivery settings to "Background data" enabled
    * Data roaming to enabled
    * Email and Corporate Synch settings/Email delivery settings "Data Push" to enabled
    * "Fetch Schedule" to EITHER "15 minutes" or "manual" (either of which shouldn't matter if Data Push is enabeled)
    * Sync over WI-FI Only is disabled
Not retrieving email is critical to my business- I use a device for email more than I talk to anyone.
This constitutes a breech of service unless it is immediately rectified.
    My Droid X was delivered as the following;
    Version 1.13.604.MB810.Verizon.en.US
    Firmware 2.1-update-1
    Baseband Version BP_C_01.04P
    Kernel Version 2.6.29 w30471@il93lnxdroid08 #1
    Build Number VZW
    ERI Version 5
    PRL Version 51926

Has any one experienced this on there X
Now when i shut the X off an do the restart it's back on.
I don't use WiFi very often (work doesn't allow non work computers to connect, and at home I use my laptop), but I find at work that my phone sometimes doesn't want to connect to the Network when I walk into the building from the parking ramp (very spotty service on the ramp).
What I do to correct this without restarting, I turn on 'airplane' mode until I see the little airplane in the notification bar, then turn airplane mode off. Within a minute, the network is reconnected and working in 3g just fine.
Location is also part of the problem. I work on the first floor of the building. They are doing remodeling on my floor right now, so I am now on the top floor and have not had this happen since the move a month ago. Since my floor is below a hill with another building on top of the hill between my normal location and the closest tower, the line of sight is hidden, so I expect small problem with it. It doesn't happen all the time, but I do notice it when I try to run internet radio at work.

  • Can send but not retrieve emails using Thunderbird and Windows 8.1

Hi, I am not able to get Thunderbird to retrieve emails on a new laptop.
Last week I purchased a new laptop due to an imminent hard disk failure on my old laptop. I will call them "Old" and "New" laptops. (Old laptop is still working for the moment...)
The Old laptop is nearly 3 years old, and I have been using Thunderbird on it since new without any problems.
I have downloaded and installed Thunderbird on the New laptop, and can not get it to retrieve emails.
As the Old laptop is still working (at the moment), I am able to directly visually compare and check settings on both computers.
    THE PROBLEM
Using Thunderbird on the New laptop, I am able to send emails, I can see all my old emails restored from the Old laptop using Mozbackup, but clicking Get Mail on the New laptop does not retrieve new
    emails.
When I click Get Mail, the status message in the bottom left corner says "connected to .....<ISP>..." but does not actually get the emails. However, the Old laptop is still able to get emails as it always has.
My ISP is a large Australian telco that I have used for many years and I have not changed anything with my account. The ISP is POP3.
    WHAT HAVE I TRIED
I deleted the email account created by restoring from Mozbackup, and attempted using the Thunderbird new account wizard, however Thunderbird did not recognise my ISP and would not create the account - even though it is working perfectly at the same time on the Old laptop.
All Firewalls I can find have been configured to allow Thunderbird, with the same configuration settings on both machines.
How do I know I can send but not Get emails from Thunderbird on the New laptop?
I have sent test emails to myself from the New laptop. Thunderbird sends successfully, I am able to preview the test emails via Mailwasher on the New laptop, and can read, reply, etc, to the emails if I log into my ISP webmail service. However I can NOT get Thunderbird to retrieve and download these emails on the New laptop. If I go to the Old laptop, Thunderbird works perfectly, retrieves and downloads all new emails, including these test emails.
I am now at the point where I do not know what else to try and would appreciate any suggestions.....
I have spent many hours over the last 3 days surfing the net, forums, Mozilla Support, etc, and tried everything suggested, without success. The only thing I have NOT tried is starting windows in Safe mode (as per some suggestions), as it is not a viable long term solution.
    OTHER INFO
    Computer Details;-
    "Old" laptop;-
Windows 7 Home Premium - continuously updated with all Critical and Important updates. 64 bit version.
Antivirus = Bitdefender Total Security (subscription and licensed). Up to date.
MailwasherPro 2012 (subscription and licensed). Up to date.
Thunderbird 24.5.0 working perfectly. Up to date.
    "New" laptop;-
Windows 8.1 - up to date with all Critical and Important updates. 64 bit version.
Antivirus = Bitdefender Total Security (subscription and licensed) - downloaded and installed. Up to date.
MailwasherPro 2012 (subscription and licensed) - downloaded and installed. Up to date.
Thunderbird 24.5.0 - downloaded and installed.
Note: I 'downloaded and installed' the Windows 8.1 version of these programs to avoid any potential compatibility problems restoring or copying from a Windows 7 backup version of the programs.
    1) New laptop came with pre-installed with McAfee - which has been Uninstalled due to running Bitdefender (Windows searches for 'McAfee' return nothing found suggesting the Uninstall was successful).
    2) Thunderbird has been added to both Bitdefender and Windows 8.1 firewalls on the New laptop.
    3) Bitdefender and Windows security settings are identical on both laptops - as near as I can determine, I may be missing something - but have checked all settings 3 times by doing a side-by-side visual comparison.
    4) Thunderbird settings are also identical and I am using the same email address and ISP that I have been using for many years.
    5) I migrated Thunderbird settings, accounts and emails from the Old laptop to the New laptop using Mozbackup, then visually checked and compared all settings in Thunderbird between the two machines.
    6) For info, I have used Mailwasher for many years as a simple way to preview and wash mail before running email programs such as Thunderbird - might be overkill, but I have also never had a virus or malware problem, so will keep doing this.
    7) I have Uninstalled and re-installed Thunderbird on the New laptop twice, and done the same with Bitdefender once.
    8) Any config changes I try on the New laptop, I either restart Thunderbird and / or restart the New laptop, or both.
    9) I have not created a Windows 8.1 account and am not using SkyDrive.
    10) Only other software I have installed on the New laptop is Google Chrome, Office Home 2013 and iTunes - all are working.
    Thanks in advance....

Well there is not much left. If telnet works then the path is clear and there is no hardware firewall blocking ports.
All that is left is software, so try windows safe mode with networking. A very handy way to eliminate software. it also actually disables most anti virus resident features and is preferred here because anti virus/security programs do not always disable or turn off when they say they have.
You might also try the McAfee removal tool. https://community.mcafee.com/thread/52788 I notice the rep said yes to both, they did not say not required.
Finally you could try creating a new profile, and see if it works just to exclude corruption of your existing profile. ( I doubt it but I am at the anything goes point)
Just as an aside, I have never had an email borne nasty and I for many years never even had an email virus scanner. So yes I think your a bit over cautious with mailwasher, if that is what your using it for. Thunderbird does not support scripting languages or flash, or most plugins in the email sandbox. The result is getting a virus from a mail in Thunderbird is really only possible, for all practical purposes, if you open that password protected zip from the young Russian woman and that is what the anti virus should be blocking anyway when the temp file is written.

  • Exchange Account not Retrieving Email Regularly

When I first start Mail, it logs in and synchs my Exchange (2007) account fine.  But after that, it never retrieves the mail again.  I have to restart mail to get it to synch again.  What gives?

I wrote this article on tips for trying to rectify this issue of the Outlook 2010 client itself
    http://www.bytemedev.com/outlook-2010-not-receiving-emails-while-activesynccitrix-clientowa-is/
#2 Usually does it for me.
1.) Verify network connectivity to Exchange from the machine (i.e. try pinging the box) or log into OWA.
2.) Fully Toggle Work Offline Mode.
*This means to Enable Work Offline from the Send/Receive Ribbon, shutting down Outlook (and Lync 201x as well), then launching Outlook, and then disabling Work Offline mode.
3.) Try turning it off and on again.
3.) Visit %UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook and ensure OABs, RoamCache, ~xxxx.OST.TMP or ~xxxx.OST, are not in Read-Only mode, and avoid encrypting this folder (it isn’t Microsoft’s best practices.)
4.) Rebuild the OST by simply renaming the .OST to .OLD or some such, Outlook 2010 and Lync 201x have to be closed, then re-open Outlook 2010. This maybe needed for OST files several GBs in size. It’s very well documented and known to become unstable as size
    increases.
5.) Rebuild the email profile itself by utilizing Control Panel\Mail (32-bit).
6.) Attempt a Repair of Office 2010 (Go to Programs and Features, and right click Microsoft Office 2010 click Changes).
7.) Attempt an Uninstall / Re-install of Office 2010 (you may need your product key for this!)
8.) IF you have tried all steps above, a lot of people are completely at a loss. Not me, rebuild the Windows Profile itself. It obviously has some corruption in the registry, temp cache, cache, effective credentials and what not.
9.) When all else fails, reformat! This is the equivalent to a nuclear strike though, so use the right tool for the right job.

  • Mail does not retrieve emails

My Mail has two acct (mac.com and an exchange acct). This morning, Mail suddenly stops retrieving new emails from the exchange acct. (mac.com acct works fine). I know it tries, since the dailing spin spins. But seems it has hard time connecting to the server and fetching new emails. Activity viewer shows "logging in as user ..." and "sync.. with server" working.
Checked with our sys adm, the server is fine. I can access my acct via web client.
Help please! I have been using Mail for a few years and don't want to give up.
    HW

    You’re welcome.
    > I'm afraid that the size of the mailbox is pretty big. I checked
    ~/Library/Mail/exchange-acct, which is about 6GB.
OK. That may be the problem then. The overall size of the account folder is not an issue, but individual mailboxes should be under 2 GB in Mail 2.x (the limit was even lower in Mail 1.x).
You may use the Account Info window to check how much size each mailbox takes up on the server — choose Get Info (⌘I) from the Action menu (gear icon) located below the mailbox list in the main Mail window.
Check that none of your mailboxes is larger than 2 GB. Create custom mailboxes on the server and re-organize your mail there however you wish via webmail if necessary.
When done, you may want to re-create Mail’s index and cached mailbox contents as follows (and this may certainly take a while given the size of the account):
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down. This is where all your mail is locally stored.
    3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see any other “Envelope Index”-named file there, delete it as well.
    4. Move any “IMAP-”, “Mac-”, or “Exchange-” account folders to the Trash. Note that you can do this with IMAP-type accounts because they store mail on the server and Mail can easily re-create them. DON’T trash any “POP-” account folders, as that would cause all mail stored there to be lost.
    5. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be “imported”. Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index — Mail says it’s “importing”, but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
    6. As a side effect of having removed the IMAP account folders, those accounts may be in an “offline” state now. Do Mailbox > Go Online to bring them back online.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

  • Apple Mail clients not retrieving emails properly over IMAP

I posted this in Tiger Mail but no responses; hopefully someone here has some knowledge of this issue.
I'm testing an email server on 10.5 with IMAP.
Here's my setup all using the same user IMAP account.
    1 Outlook 2007
    1 Thunderbird (on Vista Business)
2 Mail 2.1.3 on 2 different 10.4.11 Apples (one Mac Mini and one MacBook Pro 17")
    1 iPhone
When sending emails to this user account, all the non-Apple Mail clients receive them instantly or after I force a 'Send/Receive' command without any problems.
The 2 Apple Mail clients do not receive the new emails on their own OR with 'Get Mail' command OR the 'Synchronize' command. They flat out refuse to receive new emails.
When I close and reopen the Apple mail clients, they do receive the new emails immediately. OR if I select an existing mail message in the view, then they receive the new emails.
Totally weird but definitely an Apple Mail issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

After trying to isolate every variable, I created a new test account and deleted the existing one I had been using. Problem solved - it works great now!
For some reason, the original user account had some type of corruption.

  • IPOD Touch not retrieving emails

My ipod touch stopped receiving emails about 2 weeks ago.  A message indicates that the mail server imap.gmail.com is not responding.  I tried to reset to the default setting but this did not work.  Any suggestions as to what is causing the problem?

Make sure you're connected to the internet and that Gmail does work. (Use the Gmail app or via Safari and see if that works. Double check the settings with this. https://support.google.com/mail/troubleshooter/1668960?hl=en

Actually this is system wide problem, other users not reported.

  • IMac not retrieving email when asleep

Before I installed Mountail Lion on my iMac, my email would come in throughout the night when the computer was asleep. After installing Mountain Lion, this isn't happening anymore (I know this idea was supposed to work with Power Nap on laptops, but it's working the reverse way on my iMac).  Any ideas what might be happening?
    thanks,
    Allen

Check the setting in System Preferences[Energy Saver]-Computer Sleep.
You want it set to never.

  • Not retrieving mail

    Hello,
I was wondering if anyone knows why my iPhone is not retrieving email today. It has never had an issue before, but today it is not retrieving mail. It also would not get into the App Store yesterday. I have heard that there has been speed issues lately, but....
    David

Nevermind I deleted some messages and it works all of the sudden.

  • Cannot retrieve email this morning.

CAN NOT retrieve email this morning. It just keeps trying without success. It's been appox. 3 weeks and I'm still having trouble with deleting emails. Verizon has increased the cost of the internet and has lowered their standards. As a retiree, I'm enbrassed to say I worked for this company for 25 yrs. Get it together Verizon.

If you have another email account, try setting that up on your phone and try receiving an email.  If you can receive email with another account, then the problem's not with your iPhone; if you can't send anything then the problem is with your phone.
If you either don't have another email account or you can't receive any email the you'll have to restore your iPhone with a backup created before you started having trouble.

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.
