Not shooting anamorphic with my Panasonic DVX 100B. Am I missing out?

Hello All,
I have a Panasonic DVX 100B that I shoot 4:3 ratio with letterbox. I use a .7 wide angle lens adaptor. Am I missing out by not shooting anamorphic?
DG

studio X has the answer. The ONLY difference between 4:3 and 16:9 is the frame. What are you framing and how do you want your frame to look? If you shoot 4:3 and you are trying to get a full mountain scape for instance, you'll need to zoom out further and contain more sky and foreground in order to get the full mountain range. If you shoot 16:9, you'll have a wider range, with less above and below the subject. (Of course this is just one example...) You are only missing what you want to show your audience.
Sitcoms, for instance, would not benefit as much from 16:9 because in humor you want to keep the audience attention on the main action of the screen. Too much around that lessens the blow of the punchline. But in a drama or action, the area surrounding your main action is just as important when creating mood or tension.

  • Newbie Import Question - Shooting 4K with Panasonic GH4

I'm shooting 4K with a Panasonic GH4 and  would  like to know what file format is best to import and edit - AVCHD, .MOV or MPEG4, etc.
    Any guidance welcomed
    Thank you - Ross

    David,
    Thank you for the response.
Yes, I'm a novice and I'm using FCPX because I'm serious about the whole process /craft / art form and want to learn as much as possible and want as professional a result as possible. Good tools to begin with and now working on skills.
I'm shooting 4K and then will be down-resing to 1080 which is what most folks (pros and otherwise) seem to be doing with the Panasonic GH4 4K footage. Lot's more detail in edited video than shooting 1080 to begin with.  Also using 4K to help with when using one camera - I can punch in, use other parts of the frame for close-ups. etc.
My budget is not unlimited but I'm doing this for the business I own and my own pleasure so I'm making an investment in my business and myself. I've been shooting with a GH2 for awhile as well as Canon XF100s. I really enjoy the whole process and shooting industrial videos - instructional, educational, information mainly for my business.  I've paid my dues learning the business that I'm in now and know that education that can jump start the process is really beneficial. The learning curve is a bit steep but I am trying to learn as much as possible from others, my own mistakes and my occasional wins with beautiful images.
Anyone in LA, Ventura or Santa Barbara that shoots with a GH4 and editing with FCPX?

  • Issues with Flash/MIME. Oh, how I miss YouTube.

    Hello,
A few days ago, I finally got around to updating my software. I received only the December '07 update of Quicktime (7.4) and Security Update (2007-009 1.1). That's it. And then my life went to shambles and flash content no longer displays on the web! This is quite silly, as right before the update I was YouTubing like crazy. So, it's pretty apparent the update did something (like ruining my life).
Here's how it goes... A website with flash content won't load, instead I get a block icon with a question mark and a message saying, "The page "Page Title X" has content of MIME type "application/x-shockwave-flash". Because you don't have a plug-in installed for this MIME type, the content can't be displayed." Sometimes I get directed to the Adobe site for Flash, which I'll download. But that doesn't do anything either.
After many hours invested in downloading all sorts of plug-ins, tweaking with QuickTime and permission settings, oh, and missing out on the video wonders of the net, I'm debating a system reboot.
So, if you could help me to avoid this hassle, that'd be swell.

Adobe FlashPlayer should first be uninstalled using the appropriate uninstaller available here: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=2 and then the latest version obtained from here: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash and installed.
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.)

  • Seeking a quality (not necessarily the best) mic for my DVX 100B

    Hello All,
I work for a hunger relief organization. I spend a good deal of time out on the street interviewing people seeking food assistance. I make short documentaries about their experiences, and share them with our community at presentations. I work with FCP for editing. I have found that the mic that comes with the DVX 100B is just fine for one-on-one interviews in quiet environments, but when I'm outside with people talking and milling about, it's really tough to get good quality sound. I own a lav, but as I'm shooting documentary style, the process of attaching the mic usually (always) kills the moment.
So, I'd like to get a shotgun mic, but would prefer not to break the bank. I suppose a decent out-the-door price range would be $500 to $700. I've scoured the web for reviews, but they're pretty thin. Your thoughts for my price range would be appreciated.
    Thanks.
    DG

That built-in mic is terrible for anything.
Sennheiser ME66. Bullet proof. Good for darn near anything too. Take it off the cam, put it on a mic stand and now you have a great interview mic. I love my ME66, I can't ever use my DVX without it.

  • Two issues getting a headless error form windows & my clips audio plays in the preview but not once placed in th timeline. I taped with a panasonic HC 750 V. i believe it is with clips filmed using directed not surround audio.

The title more or less says it all. I have Elements 13 & am Using the Panasonic HC 750V. I shot in AVCHD 1080/60p & instead of surround sound choose the directed feature to focus on the voices in front of me. The audio works in preview but not on the timeline. I am also getting Headless errors when working with premiere that pop up in windows but it does not shut down the system.
    Any help apprecaited.

    pc
Have you updated your Premiere Elements 13 to 13.1 using an opened project's Help Menu/Update. If not, please do so.
Just some points of clarification on the AVCHD 1080/60p with which you are having audio problem in Premiere Elements 13.
    a. I see no option to record to tape with your Panasonic model. Is there one? if not, what was recorded to, a memory card?
    b. When you talk about directed not surround audio, are you saying that your video uses Dolby Digital 2 channel stereo instead of 5.1 channel?
    c. Is your AVCHD footage presented to you as AVCHD.mts rather than AVCHD.mp4. I think that is the case if you are referring to Dolby Digital
    rather than AAC audio.
Are you saying that you get play back video and audio if you double click the video's thumbnail in Project Assets, but you get video but no audio after you drag the file to the Timeline and play back its contents in the Edit area monitor?
    a. Have you checked the Volume control under the Adjust Tab/Adjustments Palette/Volume Panel expanded to make sure the Volume has been taken all the way down? Under that condition, you will get play back in the Preview Window, but no audio from the Timeline level play back in the Edit area monitor.
    b. In that same regard, if you look at the Timeline audio clip, note a yellow orange line that runs horizontally across the duration of the audio clip. Is that at the bottom of the frame or is it in the middle or at the top?
Do you work with the Elements Organizer at all? That Headess issue sounds like an Elements Organizer issue. More on that later. That issue should not prevent you from continuing your work. But we will explore that next.
    Thanks.

I have Photoshop CS3 which I have used successfully for a number of years.  I now shoot pics with a Nikon DSLR D7100. When I try to open NEF files the following flag appears: "Could not complete your request because PS does not recognize this file".  What do I need to do to open my NEF files??  Thanks.

Thanks for the quick reply, CP
FYI, the file is a photographic panorama based on several .CR2 photos taken in July, 2012 and processed in CS5's camera RAW/Photoshop.  Beyond the metadata, here are no fonts or text in the file.
    1.  I changed Maximize ...File Capability from "Never" to "Always" and the flattened file saved and loaded OK, though I can't figure why given Adobe's description of this option. "If you work with PSD and PSB files in older versions of Photoshop or applications that don’t support layers, you can add a flattened version of the image to the saved file...".  The file saved in this manner is ~8% larger and is not my preference as a routine since I've TB's of photo files.  By the way, out of thousands of .psd/.psb files, the one being discussed is the first to give me the error.
    2.  I've tried saving/reloading the file on another computer with Win XP Sp3/CS5...again with Maximize Capability OFF.  Same problem.  Turn ON Maximize Capability and it works.  As with the Win 8 machine, Bridge could neither create a thumbnail or read Metadata.
    3.  I've purged the Bridge Cache, made sure there were no old PS page files, reset PS preferences, and disabled my 2 plugins with no change in the problem.  Windows and Adobe progs are all updated.  Saving to a different HDD has no effect.
The problem occurs on 2 computers (Win XP/Win 8), two versioins of Photoshop (CS5/CS6), and "Maximize" On/Off togles the problem.  My guess it is a bug in PSD processing routines.
If I can't find a fix, will keep with Maximize ON and deal with the larger files that result...the cost of insurance, I suppose.
    Thanks again

  • Will it work with iMovie 8.0.6. PANASONIC DVX 100A?

    Hello
I am bidding on a Panasonic camera PANASONIC DVX 100A. I "heard" that it works with iMovie, BUT, I would like to double check with you on the support board.
I thank you all in advance.
    Xeno

Best to ask this question on the iMovie forum if you want to be sure someone who uses iMovie and that camera sees the question.
Still, if your computer has a firewire 400 port, the camera can be controlled by the computer.
Depending on the how much you want to use the camera and how many hours there already are on the heads, you may want to use less expensive DV cam (or find something like a Sony DSR-11) as the playback device to keep the wear and tear on the dvx down.
    good luck,

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your iOS device, you need to delete the account from your iOS device first, then add it back using your updated details. (Settings > iCloud, scroll down and hit "Delete Account")
Providing you are simply updating your existing details and not changing to another account, when you delete your account, all the data that is synced with iCloud will also be deleted from the device (but not from iCloud), but will be synced back to your device when you login again.
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your computer, you need to sign out of the account from your computer first, then sign back in using your updated details. (System Preferences > iCloud, click the sign out button)
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iTunes account on your iOS device, you need to sign out from your iOS device first, then sign back in using your updated details. (Settings > store, scroll down and tap your ID)
If you are using iMessages or FaceTime, you will also need to log out and into your ID there too.

  • 23.98 Panasonic DVX-100a

So I shot an entire season of football on a Panasonic DVX-100a in 24Pa. During halftime I would turn the camera off to conserve battery. Upon capturing those clips I would get a time code break every time where the camera was turned off, giving me two separate clips. On the last couple games of the season the second half or the NAME-1 clip's audio would be off and continue drift off in weird intervals. Upon syncing that nightmare up did I realize that there was another issue related to exporting and playback. When I would export the edited tracks to a QT Movie file, (keeping the settings at default) the footage in the QT movie was different than that of what played back from the timeline. Rather than just showing the edited plays from the timeline it would show footage from the same game, just show parts that were edited out from the raw source. All of the obviously things like IN & OUT points, markers were checked (none set btw) to insure nothing was creating a mixup. My solution around this was to take the playback from the timeline dump it to tape and re-digitize to insure proper edited footage. Not sure where the mix up went. Any ideas??? I've used the camera since then and was successful with a proper edit. I've since stopped using that camera to prevent any future issues.

So we take it that it's a bug which strenghens the
usual warning: never update your software in the
middle of a big project. Acually the more I look at
FCP 6, the more I wonder if it's worth upgrading...
I have another six months to go on this project, and I love smoothcam, but still....
I'm going to try 6.0.1. If I don't get any satisfaction with that, I am going to go back to 5.1.4, which was working fine. Actually, FCP 6 solved what for me was a huge problem with version 5.1, which involved management of media and clips. Previous to version 6, if I moved a sequence from one nested bin to another one nested in a different bin, FCP silently and without any warning broke ALL links to the master clips in that sequence. FCP 6 has fixed this problem. But created others.....
I will report back to this thread after I try 6.0.1.

  • DVX-100b isn't being seen by OL or laptop...

I'm posting this for my wife (she's Adobe user forum shy) - she's just noticed that her laptop isn't always picking up her camera (a DVX-100b), and thus OL isn't always seeing it when she needs to do a shoot. I've plugged the camera into other laptops and the same thing occurs...sometimes works, sometimes not. I know it's not the camera only because I hooked it up to an older XP machine, and it saw the camera everytime. I know our Vista and Win7 computers all just did a bunch of updates from Microsoft...so I ask - is anyone else seeing something like this?

    Yeah - I tried a bunch of different cables...nothing.

  • Any way to NOT import JPEGs with RAWs?

When I import RAW files from my camera, Aperture imports the JPEG images as well but keeps it hidden from view. I dug into the Aperture Vault to check out what was going on, and it stores the 4-5 MB JPEG alongisde each RAW file. I can't see the reason for this. I'm not interested in these crappy JPEGs and they are just taking up room on my hard drive. Is there any way to get Aperture to not import the JPEGs when importing RAW files?

    step 1 ... stop shooting RAW+JPG ...
ok, i got that out of the way ... do you import directly from the camera ??? or directly from card reader into aperture ???
me, i NEVER import directly from card to program ... EVER ...
last week i needed to shoot RAW+JPG, only because i needed quick access to some JPGs and didn't have aperture handy ...
when i returned i copied my card contents to a desktop folder (like i always do) and used the search box and entered JPG ... then i deleted every one - they had served their purpose ... then i dupped the folder of RAW files and then imported into aperture ... no JPGs imported ...
seriously the only way to not have aperture import the JPG with the RAW is to weed out the JPGs (or not shoot RAW+JPG - but i already covered that)

  • What battery is compatible with the Panasonic PV-GS85 Camcorder?

The battery that it came with is now busted and won't hold a charge for more than a few minutes (It had a good few years in it though, of me dropping it and what not.)
So I'm shopping for a new battery. I found a battery on radioshack's website that says it's compatible with my camcorder, and it replaces the Panasonic CGR-DU06 battery, that I bought it with. But I don't know about it, and I would prefer to be able to just pick a battery up at best buy, or anywhere really, in order to have it by this Saturday.
I found lots of batteries on the best buy website that say they're compatible with different Panasonic camcorders, but they all say "including" so I assume it's not limited to just the camcorders listed in the description, but none of them actually list my particular camcorder. Here's some links to some of the ones that may be compatible, but I just don't know for sure.

    Hi xpollypocketx,
I truly apologize for the delay in my response to this, and I'm sure that you have gotten your new battery by now. If you are still in need of a replacement battery for this camcorder we don't actually sell the proprietary Panasonic battery, but we do sell two models that are compatible with this camcorder made by Lenmar. The Lenmar model LIZ304P and model LIZ305P are compatible with the Panasonic PV-GS85 camcorder. The basic difference between the two batteries is that model LIZ304P is a 1320mAh Lithium Ion battery pack, while model LIZ305P is a 2500mAh Lithium Ion battery; the more mAh's a battery has the longer it will hold a charge.
