Not Staying Awake After Scheduled Startup
Hello
I imagine this question must have been asked before but I can't find reference to it.
I have my computer scheduled to automatically sleep at midnight and start up at 08:00. It goes to sleep on schedule but when I come to my computer some time after the scheduled start up time, it is asleep. It then wakes just fine if I press a key on the keyboard.
I looked at system.log and it contains the entries below at 08:00 (text in brackets are my edits to keep the log anonymous). This suggests to me that the computer is trying to start and either not succeeding or shutting down again.
Please could someone tell me how to fix it?
Thanks
Ian

Hi, Ian.
Your computer woke as expected and noted this at 08:00:08 (8 seconds past 08:00) in the log:
Oct 17 08:00:08 <computername> kernel[0]: System Wake
There's nothing in the log snippet you provided to indicate the machine went back to sleep.
Check the settings in the System Preferences > Energy Saver > Sleep tab. If the Display or Computer sleep sliders are set to short time intervals, e.g. a few minutes, then either inactivity period may be triggered after it wakes from lack of activity.
For example, if you have Display Sleep set to 3 minutes and you come to the machine at 8:05, then the display would be asleep despite the machine having awoken at 8:00 since there was no activity between 08:00 and 08:03.
To rule out the possibility of corrupted preferences, try the following:
1. Quit System Preferences if it is open.
2. Open the Computer > Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration folder.
3. Trash the following two files therein:• com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
• com.apple.AutoWake.plist
You may be prompted for your Admin password when you trash these files.
The first file contains the settings specified in the Energy Saver preferences tabs, while the second contains the settings specified via the Schedule button in Energy Saver preferences. Note that the second file is only extant if you have used the Schedule to schedule startup, sleep, or shutdown.
4. Empty the Trash.
5. Launch System Preferences and reset the Energy Saver preferences accordingly.
Good luck!
Dr. Smoke

F2105 HP Monitor Will NOT Stay Awake
Failed to awaken when W8 computer did.
Have tried the monitor on W7, XP, another W8 computer and a Mac OsX - on all of which the monitor had previously worked.
When the monitor is first hooked up (VGA, DVI) or turned on the monitor shows the expected display for about 3 seconds and then announces that it is going to sleep due to no input.
The menu button does nada. Nor does holding down either the power button or the menu button for 2 minutes.
I see reports of this on the forum going back to 2010, but no one seems to have solved the issue that I can see.
To me it seems that it might well be a firmware issue on the monitor's board. Does anyone know how the firmware can be rebooted or replaced?Hello @PanzerFaust,
I understand that your HP f2105 21 inch LCD Monitor will not stay awake and you are looking for a resolution to this issue. I am providing you with some steps you can try below:
Step 1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the monitor and the wall
Step 2. Hold the power button down for at least one minute
Step 3. Plug the power cord back into the monitor and then into the wall outlet (not a power bar or surge protector)
Step 4. Press the Menu button on the monitor
Step 5. Navigate to the Factory Reset option and select it
If the above steps did not resolve your issue you can try the monitor on a computer or other device to see if the issue persists. If it does I think it would be best if you contact HP Technical Support for repair options.
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
I'll presume that you can adjust the brightness after bootup. If that display preference is kept in PRAM, it's possible that the PRAM battery is wearing out.
Here's what Apple says about what's stored in PRAM:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1242
To test that possibility, turn off "Set date and time automatically" in the Date & Time panel of System Preferences (if it's set), shut down and unplug your Mac, then let it sit for a few minutes. When you reboot it, check the system date and time. If the PRAM battery is failing, those may be set incorrectly.
iFixit describes replacing the PRAM battery of an iMac G5 as of "moderate" difficulty. See these pages:

Firefox 11.0 Personas are not staying enabled after restart of FF11
After updating Firefox 10.0.2 to FF 11.0, both of my PC's personas that I have will not stay enabled after restarting FF 11.0. I have tried different personas on each PC and they also will not stay enabled after a restart of the browser. FYI, I am still using the same extensions that I had used in FF 10.0.2 and there all up to date in FF 11.0, it's just this persona issue that bug me big time.
I've tried all the Knowledge Base help suggestions, but none have worked.
Any one else having this issue? Any on have a fix that worked?
Help! The installed personas and the currently selected persona is saved as a pref in the prefs.js file in the Firefox Profile Folder, so there may be a problem with that file.

Applescript to login user after scheduled startup
Hi,
I am trying to get the MACs in the office to:
at a set time - do a TM backup.
after backing up shutdown the MAC
Next morning startup, login the/a user loading any apps that were in use before the previous shutdown and sleep (which the MAC will do anyway after a period of inactivity anyway)
Thus the backup, shutdown and restart are effectively invisible to the user -unless they have left blocking apps open.
I have pretty much got it sorted. But I can't find a way to login the user after a scheduled startup using apple script.
Currently a crontab runs this applescript:-
(* next wake time - set for just before DoBackup is scheduled *)
do shell script "pmset repeat wakeorpoweron MTWRF 18:55:00" password "LoginPassword" with administrator privileges
(* login *)
tell application "System Events"
tell application process "loginwindow"
keystroke "LoginName"
keystroke return
delay 3.0
keystroke "LoginPassword"
delay 3.0
keystroke tab
keystroke return
end tell
end tell
Am I trying to do something that I just can't achieve?
Is there a simple way of achieving this?
Andy Cidle is not sleep.
Idle means the machine is powered up, ready to do something, but no one is actively using the system - it's not downloading anything, rending anything, playing any video, reading/writing data to disk, etc. Most people's systems spend a significant amount of time in this state, but it's still running numerous background processes even if there's no user at the helm.
A number of system components can reduce their power consumption when 'idle', ready to spring back to action at a millisecond's notice. Indeed, the CPU can draw a significant difference in power depending on how much work it's being asked to do.
So idle is not the same as sleep. Sleep preserves only the system RAM, minimal components to detect wake events (e.g. keyboard presses, possibly network), and not much more. -

0xffff0000 - 0xffff1780 libSystem.B.dylib ??? (???) /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylibTry these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption. -
Taskbar does not stay locked after restart
Hi,
I have been having this issue for a while now. I have a dual monitor setup, and I move my taskbar the the 2nd screen and lock it in place. However after every startup/reboot it defaults back to my 1st monitor. The same issue occurs when I un-tick the "Touch
Keyboard" option, it just resets after startup. Any help :(?
Thanks in advance.Hi,
Third party application could cause this issue, in my environment, I can lock all taskbars, and it would stay on the personal defined position after a restart:
So I would suggest you uninstall this application and re-check it.

Wifi will not stay connected after Lion upgrade - help?
I upgraded to Lion last week on my iMac and now my computer will not stay connected to wifi... it is fine if I restart my computer, but then it looses its connection, settings when it goes in to screen saver mode - very frustrating, please help!
This has been well discussed on another thread here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3191630?start=2055&tstart=0
(There appear to be no moderators on these forums to make sure that new threads with the same topic don't get linked to a parent !?)
Anyway... The issues appear for many to be related to a specific Airport card type & firmware version.
I've had constant disconnect problems with my Mini since upgrading to Lion.
My Airport card specs are:
Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x86)
Firmware Version: Atheros 5424: 2.1.14.9
Connecting to my Time Capsule distributing on:
PHY Mode: 802.11a
The Atheros firmware version appears to be the issue depending on certain wifi network conditions.
After some playing about today I think I've managed to force my Mini to connect on a better frequency, without having to roll back the firmware to the Snow Leopard version or mess with the Mini Airport card settings (via Terminal) by changing some settings in my router (Time Capsule).
These are the changes I made:
Airport Utility > Wireless > Wireless Options
Set Radio Mode to 802.11 a/n - b/g instead of 802.11 a/n - b/g/n (Automatic)
Set 2.4 GHz Channel to 13 instead of Automatic
Set 5GHz Channel to 48 instead of Automatic
My Mini now connects on:
PHY Mode: 802.11g
Signal / Noise: -64 dBm / -96 dBm
Transmit Rate: 54
instead of previously
PHY Mode: 802.11a
Signal / Noise: -73 dBm / -96 dBm
Transmit Rate: 36
This appears now to be stable (no drops in the last 4 hours). It's a low transmit rate still, but better than before.
The iMac is still connecting on
PHY Mode: 802.11n
Signal / Noise: -69 dBm / -88 dBm
Transmit Rate: 216
and all is right with the world (hopefully for the long term) -
WiFi does not stay connected after latest upgrade
I am having an issue with the WiFi connection on my Iphone 4 after the latest 4.3 upgrade.
It does not stay connected to the wifi. I have to go and manually connect to it.
Then after a couple of seconds it loses it again.
Why is this"I'm not sure why yours is doing it but I would suggest your reboot your router and reset the iPhone network settings.
If you are hiding your SSID, do the last step which is tap Settings > WiFi > Other and completely re-enter your network name, security, and network password."
Been there, done that... Did ALL these steps, but that does not fix the problem... AFTER inputting the SSID manually, selecting security, and then the password, iPhone STILL says it cannot connect... -
TS4510 IPhone iOS7.0.6 Do Not Disturb stays on after Schedule runs out.
When you click the Schedule option in the DND FEATURE, the Manual Option turns on. This is a bug.
'Do Not Disturb' ON
under Notification -> 'Do Not Disturb' Scheduled ON
at schedule time, moon icon APPEAR (~10 seconds delay), ring NOT from 'Favorites' PASS THROUGH
'Do Not Disturb' OFF
under Notification -> 'Do Not Disturb' Scheduled ON
at schedule time, moon icon APPEAR (~10 seconds delay), right NOT from 'Favorites' PASS THROUGH
'Do Not Disturb' ON
under Notification -> 'Do Not Disturb' Scheduled OFF
moon icon APPEAR
Allow Calls From 'Favorites', (test phone not on favorites)
phone STILL RINGS!
I think the above tests should proof that the 'Do Not Disturb' is not working except showing a moon icon. -
MacBook will not start up after first startup session
I absolutely have no idea what is going on. I have the most updated version of Snow Leopard for my '09 MacBook. I've done every trick in the book that came with my MacBook and even done the Hardware Test. I make it past the white screen with the apple, but as soon as the second start begins it just continues to stay blue. One thing I've noticed is when I hold down the C key (I believe it's that one) and have the Mac Os X disc installed, a giant lock pops up, but I have no clue what it's for. If it's a master password I definitely don't remember. Any ideas?
That lock is for a Firmware Password or a Master Password if you have FileVault enabled. You will need to get past that in order to do anything such as repair the drive or reinstall Snow Leopard.
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
Do the following:
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

Bookmarks get changed randomly / Bookmarks Bar does not stay showing after reboot
This is a brand new installation of FireFox 17.0.1 download directly from Mozilla. The previous installation was completely removed using Revo in an attempt to find the cause of this problem.
I have my bookmarks saved to a .json file so after full installation of FireFox, I rebooted the computer, came back into FireFox, enabled the Bookmarks Bar and imported my Bookmarks. Looks good so far. Then I shut it down and rebooted the computer. The bookmarks are gone, the FireFox size is back to default, and the Bookmarks bar is no longer showing.
In my previous installation, sometimes the bookmarks were there, sometimes they weren't. But even when they were, the actual URL that the bookmark was supposed to go to had been changed to some site that was opened at some point during the previous session (but not bookmarked).
The same types of problem do not occur in Opera, Safari, Chrome, or IE so I don't believe it is anything interfering with the saving of customizations.
Anyone have any ideas?Bookmarks shouldn't have been changing by themselves. Your places database (which stores history and bookmarks together) might have been corrupted. Your new installation should not have that problem, at least not right out of the box.
Sometimes Windows permissions, files in use, or other factors can cause Firefox to lose changes or start up incorrectly. This article might help: [[How to fix preferences that won't save]].
Are you just running the standard release of Firefox directly on Windows? In other words, I assume:
* It's not the "Portable" edition of Firefox.
* You are not using sandboxing or virtualization software that isolates Firefox from the system. -

Keeping mac awake after scheduled wake up
I have set my mac to wake at a certain time. The mac wouldn't do this so I deleted a number of plist files per another post, com.apple.systemuiserver.plist, com.apple.AutoWake.plist, com.apple.PowerManagement.plist.
Now the mac wakes but promptly goes to sleep again after about 2min 30 seconds, I have the energy saver settings set to sleep when inactive set to 3hrs and screen sleep set to 10 mins.
Any ideas how I can keep the mac awake? It's likely that one of the files deleted is the source of the trouble, or the PRAM is fouled up. PRAM Reset instructions.
If the PRAM reset doesn't cure the problem, the surest way to restore your iMac to normal sleep patterns is to do an "Archive and Install". You could tear your hair out for weeks messing with system files, and get nothing for your efforts but more trouble.
Archive and Install preserves all your network settings, so nothing really important is lost.
