Not Sure if Time Machine is Working Correctly

I’m relatively new to Time Machine and just noticed something yesterday that I thought was a bit odd. I’m not sure if this is how Time Machine is suppose to work or if I screwed something up.
Last month I bought a Drobo for use as a Time Machine storage location and for miscellaneous storage. I connected the Drobo to my MacBook Pro via firewire 800, and created a 500GB partition for Time Machine. Everything appeared to work just like it was suppose to, it backed up around 147GB’s of data. For the month of October I would periodically connect the Drobo via firewire and it would do it’s thing. Sunday I had the bright idea of connecting the Drobo to my Airport Extreme’s USB port to see what would happen with Time Machine. I opened the application up and at first it didn’t know where the backup folder was so I pointed it there. Once I did that Time Machine immediately started backing up around 147GB’s of data all over again.
I wondered why it was backing up everything again and just for the heck of it I opened the destination directory in Finder, and what I found surprised me. There are folders for each of the times Time Machine backed up in the Month of October but there is no directory for the one which occurred November 9th. Instead I see a file called MyName__0017f2c8c06c.sparsebundle.
Does Time Machine do a complete backup every month? When I opened Time Machine all of my data is there including stuff from October but I can’t find November’s files on the hard drive. I know they are there somewhere because the storage space reported remaining is around 150GB’s, so somewhere I have 2 complete copies of all of my data.
I don’t know what happened? Did I screw something up?

what you see is completely normal. TM backups to network drives work differently than those to directly attached drives. when TM backs up to a network drive it creates a sparse bundle disk image and backs up to that. if double-click on MyName__0017f2c8c06c.sparsebundle it will mount as a disk image (it might take a while to mount) and your November backups will be there. backups to network and to directly attached drives are not interchangeable which is why it did a full new backup when you moved the drive to AEBS. It doesn't do a full backup every month normally.

  • Not sure if my card is working correctly, all suggestions welc

Recently purchased a Dell Studio w/ Vista Ultimate SP Home and opted to also get the external sound blaster X-fi xtreme audio notebook card but i am not sure if its working as it should since the laptop speakers sound the same with and w/out the card... not sure if my settings are correct on my laptop or maybe this card was a waste since others have told me it only works with headphones....
i installed the cd that came with the card and the card has a blue led light when inserted into the slot reader on my laptop...
this is my first laptop and first sound card so not very familiar with how it all works so any and all help is much needed and appreciated....isthere a way to check and see if the card is actually working and improving the sound quality?
when i click on the sound icon in my tray it says speaker/headphones IDT High Def Audio CODEC...
    thanks in advance....

Just wondering but did you happen to read the manual for the card? Reason for asking is it quite clearly shows how to do just what you are asking,

  • Not sure if Time Machine is stalled or not

I'm backing up with Time Machine for the first time; I just upgraded to Snow Leopard a couple of weeks ago from 10.4 (on a Macbook Pro), and been having problems, so the Genius at the Apple Store recommended backing up with TM, erasing my disk and reinstalling 10.6. The disk I'm backing up to is connected via firewire, and although I've been using it for some time I reformatted before this, GUID, Extended Journaling. The first couple times the MBP crashed in the middle of the backup. Then I got an automatic "software updates available" message, so I updated with the hope that that would help. The system has not crashed yet, but I noticed that the progress bar is not showing ANY progress...I don't mean slow, but none in the last 25 minutes. The blue in the bar is still cycling but it's been reading that it's backed up 27.53GB for the last 25 minutes. I've read in other posts about some wonky progress bar issues with Time Machine; anyone have a guess as to whether this is crashed, or merely pig slow?

I had actually just downloaded carbon copy cloner yesterday, and the mac crashed 7 hours into backing up.
That's not good. Did the system crash, or did CCC crash and cause it? You should be able to restart and have it do an "update," so it doesn't have to start over. What kind of drive were you backing-up to? 7 hours sounds terribly slow, unless you have a very large system.
The Genius at the Apple Store said one of the advantages of Time machine is that I can wipe the drive, reinstall the operating system, and then reload not only the files from my backup but also the applications, with all of their system files. It would easily take a day for me to reinstall all my software from CDs, not to mention how much software I've downloaded and don't have disks for.
That's correct (see #14 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum), but you can do the same with a clone.
One of Time Machine's advantages is the quick hourly incremental backups of changes; you have an excellent chance to recover a previous version of something that was changed or deleted in error, or somehow came up corrupted.
As I said, I'm a fan of TM. But it's not perfect, and for this particular one-time use, CCC or SD will be more reliable, since you can test it.
Like many folks here, I do both: full Time Machine backups and a CCC clone on a separate HD. No app is perfect, and all hardware fails, sooner or later. I would never erase my boot drive without two full backups.
The Genius also said that my hard drive could be getting close to failure (3 years old with heavy use) even though it passes all the tests...which is one reason why I am concerned about getting a solid backup ASAP.
    Oh, yes, absolutely.

  • Time Machine wont work correctly

I have just purchased an Airport Extreme and have set it up with only minor problems.
Although my first back up to time machine took 6 hours!! that completed fine.
My problem is this, I have now backed up a number of times today but when I click onto time machine it does not see the back-up from yesterday or any of the back-ups from the last six hours and all I see is the current view of my mac hard drive as is now!!! ie cant go back in time!!!.
Anyone know how this can be fixed!!!!

Time Machine does not support backups to Airport Extreme. (so far) For the best and reliable results connect your drive to you computer with a USB or firewire cable.

  • Focus problems, not sure how to make focus work correctly

I have a number of dialog boxes and wizards, and just before I call show I request focus for the component I want to be displayed, but nothing happens. I think the show method it JDialog is setting the focus, and that this is the problem.
I want behavior to work as expected ie.focus to start at top left component and work its way down. Instead it seems to be giving fucos in the order the components were added, or soething like that. Does anyone know if this is indeed the case? I have many widgets which add components in the superclass, so this could cause me problems.
I do not want to create a focus manager, but if worse comes to worse, I will - this is a problem that is unacceptable to the client.
    Any suggestions or comments?
btw I am using 1.3.1 and win2k for the OS.

  • Time Machine wont work

I had issues with Safari quitting and used something to remove Genio(?) .  Now I can't seem to back  up.  Help!!

Genieo is junk.......specifically spyware/adware that can prevent some applications from running correctly on your Mac.
At some point you clicked through a notification of some kind to allow it to be installed on your Mac.
That notification is deceptive, but if you read the fine print, the user agreement tells you what it does.
You need to follow the instructions from Genieo support to remove it from your Mac.....if you want Time Machine to work correctly. Other applications that claim to remove Genieo probably will not, and may cause more damage to your operating system.
This is not a Time Capsule issue. If  you need more help with removing Genieo, then you should post in the support forum for your operating system. The link is just below:

I have a BT Infinity router plugged into the Time Capsule, not sure where the radio settings are?
They are able to use the network settings of the TC i.e. they can connect to the internet via the wifi through the TC but when they try and connect to the AirPort Disk this is where it is not allowing a connection.
I don;t have the drive shared out at all at the moment, is this necessary?  How do I do this if so?
I have attached the screen shots of all the settings.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Cannot get Time Machine to work

I just installed Leopard on my Power MacG4. I can't get Time Machine to work. I have gone to Utilities and repaired partitions twice. That doesn't seem to be the problem. I have no idea what to do. Any ideas?

Maybe, maybe not. Via Disk Utility, when you click the first line for the drive (Make, Size), does it show the +Apple Partition Map+ down near the bottom, and when you click the second line, show +Mac OS Extended (journaled)?+ If not, that's at least part of the problem.
There should be better messages in your logs. Download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. Navigate to the failed backup, then copy and post the messages here (be sure to get them all, as sometimes they overflow the small window).
Checked the disk utility and everything shows as you say it should. Here's the log:

  • Time Machine quit working after Upgrade to 10.9.2

Time Machine quit working after I downloaded and installed the latest security upgrade 10.9.2. Any suggestions?

I'm not sure this is what you want. There are a lot of repeated, multi-line patterns that I left in simply because I really don't know what I'm doing.  My apologies if there is too much irrelevant information. Also, the logs did not go all the way back to when the problem started.

  • Time machine stop working suddenly

not sure if it's related 10.5.6 upgrade but recently, I realize that the Time Machine stops working. I'm using a USB hard disc the backup drive. It's been working perfectly for a few months. But in the past 1 or 2 weeks, it doesn't back up anything at all. It always show "Preparing Backup..."... and that's it
I don't even know how to trouble-shoot! any help?

    Did you find this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1516
Assuming you did, how much of your HD is used, and how long did the initial TM backup take?
Since the initial backup succeeded, have you disconnected and reconnected your drive, or powered-down, or anything?
And how long has it said "preparing"?
Also, it's possible you might find something in the system log.
Use the Console app, in your Applications/Utilities folder. Click on Show Log List at the upper left, then navigate in the sidebar to your system.log (current) or system.log.0.bz2, etc (previous).
Most of what's in there is just info, and not intelligible to us mere mortals.
You're looking for messages from backupd, and/or backupd.helper. Copy anything suspicions and post them here. Maybe somebody can decipher them.

Time Machine has been working just fine, but in the last week or two it has given up the ghost. I reset the connections to the drive, and it will basically save a few bytes of data and then hang.
Although Apple originally announced, prior to the release of the first 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Stations (AEBSn), that it would support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks, they removed that option before they did finally release the base station for sale.
Since then, Apple has posted (as you have noted) that they DO NOT support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks. As far as I know, they have not changed from that position and those who do these backups find that they become corrupted over time. Sorry, but it sounds like you just confirmed that for yourself.
    1) Has one of the recent updates either on the AE (firmware) or OSX disabled this function?
No. Again, this feature has never been supported by Apple for every generation of AEBSn released.
    2) Are there any changes I can make to get this working again?
If your data backups are critical to you, then you will want to use a different solution for your Time Machine backup destination drive strategy. I would suggest that you connect your WD My Book directly to your Mac in the mean time.
Your other options would be to either use a Time Capsule (which interestingly does support TM backups to AirPort Disks) or a non-Apple solution like the Drobo FS or HP MediaSmart server.

  • What is the best USB powered portable 1TB hard drive for a macbook pro that allows Time machine to work, windows (thru Parallels software) and mac storage and is available in Australia?

I agree with teh OWC sggestion above, but why must it be USB powered? I find that far more unreliable, and the low power devices slow.
I'd frankly get a good external enclosure and buy a bare drive.  But the OWC stuff is quite good - vastly better than some of the majors (WD being aprime example of stuff that's boderline quality and often not compatible)

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message that corresponds to a failed backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showning, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting.

  • Is it possible to restore a single deleted note from a time machine backup?  If so how?

is it possible to restore a single deleted note from a time machine backup?  If so how?

    Hi James,
I was able to use VI server to invoke LV 6.1 VI's using LV 7.0 without issue.
After discovering this and mentioning it in a post somewhere, Rolf Kalbermatter indicated that was expected. and I should not be suprised.
    So....
    Vi Server may help you.

Do you know if the LabVIEW developers can/will create a way to overcome this problem rather than having to convert a VI through all the intermediate versions?
To the best of knowledge NO.
For each versino of LV there isw code included that runs behind the scenes when you open a VI from an earleir version which replaces old functions with the new versions. This is called Mutation code. To accomplish its task it has to know everything that changed between version X and Y. Since it is possible to baby step the versions up and the number of user that jump multiple major versions is small, I don't think any effort will go into that work.
THe largest attachment I have managed to upload was 3 or 4 Meg.
    Just trying to help,

  • Time Machine stopped working after using two external drives

I'm using a MacPro OS x 10.5.8.  I started using Time Machine in April 2011 to back up my files to a 2TB Lacie external drive connected via firewire.  Everything has been working fine until recently.  A friend needed some files transfered from Seagate 1TB to another external drive.  I bought a Lacie 1TB USB 3 drive and connected it to my Mac to make the file transfer.  After doing this I noticed that the generic drive icon for my 2TB Lacie backup drive had disappeared.  I could see the generic icon for the new 1TB Lacie drive.  Then I noticed a Lacie icon on my desktop.  I clicked on it and found it was my 2TB backup drive.
I decided to check Time Machine to see if it was still working properly.  When I tried to restore to a previous time, the restore button stayed grayed out and didn't respond.  Other times it would light up and respond when I clicked on it but I got an error message.  I would like to restore my system back before I connected the two ext hard drives used for file transfering in case that was what caused the problem.  Could connecting another new Lacie 1TB USB 3 external drive have caused my problem?  I haven't had this problem with other external drives.

First, merely connecting another drive could not have caused Time Machine to stop working.
Since your backup is in a doubtful state, your highest priority should be to protect your data by making another backup to a different drive. You need more than one backup anyway. Connect an empty drive, select it in the TM preference pane, and start a new backup set. Once that's done, I suggest you run "Repair Disk" in Disk Utility on the old backup volume.
