Not Syncing Properly with Gmail

Hello fellow Mac owners/fans,
I am new to Snow Leopard. Just upgraded from Tiger today. Such a nice improvement! Anyways, as such, I was setting everything up when I ran into a problem with Mail
Mail is not syncing properly with Gmail. My Gmail account has roughly 5800 total messages and 1900 unread messages (I need to clean it up quite a bit, I know ). Mail shows it as having 8500 total messages and 2200 unread messages. Mail is quite wrong. I don't know if I accidentally fetched some of the Gmail files twice, or what, but I would like for Mail to be correctly synced with Gmail.
Any ideas on what to do? Is there a quick fix or am I going to have to reset Mail?
I very much appreciate any help! Thanks for your time!
-Kyle

Hello,
You may have the dreaded double download disease. I was just fighting the bug this morning, and may have a cure that I am hoping some other guinea pig will test.
You may want to check and see if you see duplicate emails in Mail. If you want to know more about the issue you can search duplicate emails.
Anyway the secret medicine if it is a duplicate issue may be below. (It seems to be working for my issue, but am trying to get some other confirmation)
I came across an old hint (from 2001 at Mac OS X hints)
It states:
Avoid receiving duplicate emails in Mail.app
Sun, Dec 23 2001 at 9:54AM PST • Contributed by: NikWest
There is a hidden default for Mail, which I do not think has been mentioned here. You can avoid receiving duplicate Messages (e.g. from mailing lists) by opening a Terminal and typing:
defaults write com.apple.mail UniqueMessagesBeforeRouting 1
Before receiving the whole message, the message ID (a mail header) will be checked. If there's already a mail with this message ID, it will be discarded.
To disable the feature, repeat the command with a '0' at the end instead of a '1'.
This seems to work for now, any one else willing to try?
Good luck

My iPad calendar is not syncing properly with my computer.  Everything in the iPad Calendar is one day off....any suggestions?

    Susan,
Also note that the calender can be set to preserve a time zone by going to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars and turning ON Time Zone Support - but then your flight times will be correct for the local time zone...found that one while on travel and the calender was showing a flight time that was an hour earlier than I thought it was.  I had not turned on Time Zone support and it moved the time I had entered at home to the time of the local zone.
Convenient as long as you pay attention

  • Contacts on my iphone does not sync properly with icloud.

Contacts on my iphone does not sync properly with icloud. I have merged data with facebook contacts, and this merged information appears as I want it to be on icloud.com. But on the iphone, the facebook contacts and the icloud contact appear separately.
I have tried exporting the contacts out of icloud.com, then deleting all contacts on both icloud.com and on the iphone; then importing the vcard back into icloud.com, but the facebook details still appear as a separate contact. It is too time consuming to merge all of my contacts manually What should I do in order for the iphone to display the contacts as it is on icloud.com?

Is there some sort of Facebook tag on the vCard?

  • ICal To-Do list does not sync properly with Mail To-Do list

For some reason, my iCal To-Do List does not sync properly with my Mail To-Do list. Any thoughts on how to get them to sync properly? I always have more To-Dos on my Mail list than my iCal list, which probably means that when I complete a To-Do in iCal, it doesn't register with Mail.
    Any thoughts?

ensure that your mail set up is checked for syncing note; your comment on the todo list is valid and i have been asking the same question for a while. ToDo also syncs on blackberry? I guess it shows that third party software is the kick that come corp's need to pick up their act.

Why does my aol mail not sync properly with the Droid Razr? Never had the problem with blackberry but now I deal with a great deal of spam & duplicating tasks

This may sound stupid, but I'm gonna throw it out there anyway. Is it possible, that if I have enough junk on my desktop it might disrupt the signal? It seems odd, but it kind of looks like my signal is strong and relatively steady now that I've cleaned my desktop. I do tend to get very cluttered. I use a lot of reference images and save text clippings to use later... it just piles up very quickly.
So, I wonder if all that extra effort my system has to do keeping up with the junk might have something to do with the drop outs?

  • My playlists do not sync properly with my iphone

I have playlists in iTunes, which is fully up-to-date, on my 4 month old MBP.
When I sync these playlists with my iPhone 4 (iOS 5.01), the playlists are incomplete on the iPhone.
For some reason, some of the songs are missing in the playlists, though the songs themselves ARE on the iPhone (and can be played outside of the playlist).
    Solutions tried so far...
I removed all of my music (and playlists) via iTunes from my iPhone, then re-sync'd them.  No change.
I deleted one of the incomplete playlists (one that wouldn't sync properly from iTunes), I recreated it, and tried to sync it with my iPhone.  No change.
I'm at a loss.  Why would SOME songs in my playlists show up, but NOT ALL?  I suspect this has something to do with iOS 5.01, iCloud, and/or NOT using iTunes Match????  I've never had a problem with syncing before iOS 5 and iCloud.
I'd appreciate any solution to this problem.
    Thanks.

I have this exact problem, I switched to ios5 on my iPhone 4 and tried syncing it with my mac mini. All the playlists are complete on itunes but for some reason 75% of the playlists are empty on the phone but the music all there.
I've tried everything you have but I think the only thing left to do is remove all the songs from iTunes and then re add them and recreate all the new playlists.

  • Verizon Cloud not Syncing properly with Galaxy S5

Before activating the new Galaxy S5 that I bought for my gal, we backed up her Contacts to her Verizon account Cloud. We can see all of the contacts including phone numbers.
Yet after activating the new S5 most of the phone numbers are not appearing on the phone?
A Chat session with Verizon wasn't helpful.
I've tried numerous times to Sync to the new phone. The old phone has been deactivated. I've tried everything that I can think of, including Selecting all of the contacts, etc.
Any hints? She's not happy that I got her a new phone that doesn't have her phone numbers in it!

I have spent four+ hours at the local VZW store on two visits, called VZW tech support three times and spoke to five reps, and have been in touch with executive services, not to mention all the time I've spent on my own researching and trying to get my phone to sync contacts with the Verizon Cloud.  After over 20 hours of effort, I still can't get it to work.  This w/e tech support said I had to wait for a mid-June software update.  My phone will be two months old then.  I did get contacts to sync through gmail (I exported from iCloud (originally on Apple 4S) to vcard file, imported vcard content to gmail, synch to gmail account on S5). I can also populate the Verizon Cloud app contacts list from the vard file--but only from the PC side, not the phone.  I have tried numerous procedures and the S5 will not sync with the Verizon Cloud.  The Cloud app online says my device has no contacts.  I've managed to arrange my contacts to be the way I want them on my phone, I want to use the phone's contacts set as the master, but no matter what I do, I can't push the contacts to the Verizon Cloud (or vice versa).  It's a stunning roadblock and a great hindrance to onboarding new customers.

  • Mail does not work properly with gmail

Hi everyone. I am a very recent switcher and the switching process was great and extremely easy, but there has only been one problem that I can't seem to solve. Getting Gmail to work with Apple Mail. I followed all the steps on gmail's website on, how to set up gmail for POP, and how to configure Apple Mail to work with gmail, but I still can't get it to download all my emails. It only downloads some old emails, marks them all as unread, and then doesn't act like I have any other emails(which I do). Under system preferences, I have the account type labeled as POP, the incoming mail server set to pop.gmail.com, my username and password set, and the smtp box set to smtp.gmail.com. Under server settings I have the server port at 587, the ssl box checked and the outgoing mail server as stmp.gmail, like I said before. Under the advanced tab of the accounts section of apple mail preferences, I have the account enable box checked, the include when automatically checking for new mail box checked, and down at the bottom, I have the port set at 995 with the ssl box checked. In gmail, under my forwarding and POP settings, I have it set, under the POP download section to: Enable POP for all mail(even mail that's already been downloaded). Also, the status is set to "POP is enabled for all mail that has arrived since 10/13/05(which was when i first got my gmail account). Like I said before, Apple Mail at first starting downloading all the mail in my gmail account and then stopped after about 1000 to 2000 messages which only got it to about mid-2006 or earlier. Yes, I've run software update recently, too. Does anyone know why it would not dowload the rest of my mail? All help is very greaty appreciated. Thanks.

I just put my gmail account in Apple Mail and it works fine - even transferring my old gmail messages. Maybe your problem is STORAGE - see this from Mail Help:
    About .Mac Mail
.Mac Mail works with existing email clients like Mac OS X Mail, Outlook Express, and Netscape Communicator.
You can also check email when you're away from your own computer. All you need is a computer with an Internet connection and a supported web browser to check your .Mac Mail. To access .Mac Mail on the web using Mac OS X version 10.3 or later, use Safari 1.2 or later or Firefox 1.0.1 or later. If you're using Microsoft Windows XP, use Firefox 1.0.1 or later or Internet Explorer 6 or later.
Use POP or IMAP protocol to suit your working style and set up automatic email forwarding or replies.
Your email address is your .Mac member name followed by @mac.com, and the password for accessing email is the same as your member password.
Note: AOL recently added support for IMAP, so you can now read your AOL mail using Mac OS X Mail. You cannot use AOL's email program to read .Mac Mail messages directly, but you can set up your .Mac Mail account to forward email to your AOL account.
.Mac comes with 1 gigabyte (GB) of combined email and iDisk storage. .Mac trial members and email-only accounts get 50 megabytes (MB) of storage; Family Pack sub-accounts get 256 MB. You can designate storage space to your .Mac Mail account and your iDisk. For example, if you need more storage space for your email messages, you can set your .Mac Mail storage capacity to 800 MB and reserve 224 MB of storage for your iDisk. You can also increase your combined email and iDisk storage to a total of 2 GB or 4 GB by purchasing more storage. (If you have a trial account, email-only account, or Family Pack sub-account, you cannot increase your storage amount.)
Your .Mac Mail storage is automatically set to 512 MB unless you change it. You can't assign less than 15 MB of storage to your .Mac Mail account.
.Mac comes with 10 GB of data transfer per month and a 10 MB maximum message size. You can increase your monthly data transfer limit up to 250 GB per month by adding more storage space to your .Mac account. You can also purchase up to 10 additional email accounts. (Email-only accounts get 50 MB of storage space but no additional .Mac services, and Family Pack sub-accounts get 256 MB of storage space, but cannot purchase additional email accounts.)
If I had 2000 emails on my computer I would shut it down and never turn it on again.

  • World phone not syncing properly with Exchange on delete function

Hi, we are testing BES right now and currently have about 5 Curves and 1 world phone. The Curves work great, but the world phone will not sync the deleted item with Exchange. In other words, when an email is deleted from the device and it has been told to remove from both the device and server, it is only removed from device. When an email is deleted from Outlook, that message is not removed from the world phone. we don't have this problem with the curves and we've also tried hard resetting the device, and also tried using several different user accounts. the same problem exists every time. any ideas? we are trying to determine whether or not we will switch from treo/goodlink to blackberry and this isn't helping the cause. thanks.

i have validated that this is the case on all workd phones we are running. deleting from outlook doesn't delete from device and vice versa. not an issue with the curve however. what on earth is up with that? that is absolutely horrendous! good thing i didn't put one of these things in the ceo's hands. i'd probably be looking for a new job right now.

  • My gmail calendar not syncing properly with ios 8 on ipad

I downloaded IOS 8 this weekend and began noticing issues on my iPad 2 with google calendar. At first there was just one event that was listed at the wrong time. I deleted google calender from my settings, powered off, turned it back on and now all of the times and appointments were wrong. The are correct on my PC. My iPad is showing the correct time. Has anyone else encountered this and been able to fix it?

Yes. I encountered this with my gmail account on my iPhone.  What seems to have fixed my issue was removing the gmail account, going back to mail to confirm it had indeed been removed, and then re-adding the account.  It took a minute or two but the calendar came back up on my phone and has stayed.

  • My old computer is broken, my ipod will not sync properly with the new PC. Old purchases

My old computer has broken and I have replaced it with a new one.  I have the latest version of Itunes on the new one, which is running windows 8.
Old music which was already on the IPOD, and any purchases through Itunes appear on both the IPOD and the ITunes account on the PC, however a new CD which I am trying to upload to ITunes appears only on the computer and does not appear to be syncing to the Ipod.
I have tried home sharing options, reinstalling Itunes, and removing the old device from the itunes account but nothing appears to be working.  Sync looks like it is happening, but very quickly says its finished and does not transfer the new items.
On the IPOD itself, it says it will sync when connected to 'master' PC (which I am guessing is the old one, which is no longer on the account and cannot be used).
All the music is in one place on the new PC.
    Any ideas?
    thanks

  • Reminders not syncing properly with iCloud and iOS 8

I have an iMac running OS X 10.9.4 and an iPhone 6 Plus running iOS 8.0.2.  I use Reminders on both my iMac and my iPhone and iCloud is turned on for both devices.
If I create a reminder on my iMac, I can see it immediately when I log in to iCloud.com and go to Reminders.  It does not show up on my iPhone.  If I edit this reminder on either the iMac or iCloud.com, the changes sync immediately between the iMac and iCloud.com but NOT my iPhone.
If I create a reminder on iCloud.com, it immediately shows up on my iMac.  It does not show up on my iPhone.  If I edit this reminder on either the iMac or iCloud.com, the changes sync immediately between the iMac and iCloud.com but NOT my iPhone.
If I create a reminder on my iPhone, it shows up on my iMac and iCloud.com.  If I edit this reminder on either the iMac or iCloud.com, the changes sync immediately between the iMac and iCloud.com but NOT my iPhone.
In order for any edits/deletes to sync to/from the iPhone, I either need to create the event on the iPhone, at which point it syncs any other changes, or I need to create a new dummy event and then delete it, at which point it syncs any other changes.
Basically, it seems like the iPhone needs to initiate a "hey iCloud, here are changes from my end.  Oh, there are changes from other devices?  OK, I'll show those changes" protocol, otherwise it just doesn't receive any updates from iCloud.
I don't think it's an issue with my iCloud account, since Reminders on my iMac and Reminders on iCloud.com sync just fine.
On my iPhone, I have tried:
-Force quitting and re-opening the app
-Changing the Reminders sync options (Settings -> Reminders -> Sync)
-Turning Reminders off and back on under Settings -> iCloud -> Reminders
-Turning the iPhone off and back on
None of those methods have fixed this issue.
Is anyone else experiencing a similar issue or is this unique to my iPhone?

    Hi mrbofus,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
From your post I see that you're experiencing issues with iCloud syncing your reminders on your iPhone.  To troubleshoot this issue I'd like you to please follow the steps below.
    General troubleshooting
Check the System Status page to make sure there aren't any issues affecting iCloud Bookmarks or Reading List.
Make sure you've fully enabled iCloud Calendar & Reminders for the client you are using. For more setup and troubleshooting information, see the additional steps for iOS, OS X, Windows, and iCloud.com in this article.
Check iCloud Help (help.apple.com/icloud) for possible information about the issue you are experiencing.
Check your settings and preferences, because something may not be set up correctly. For example, having incorrect date and time settings can cause issues that are easily resolved by entering the appropriate settings.
    Troubleshooting Reminders on iOS devices
If you're having trouble with Reminders on an iOS device (iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch) and iCloud Calendar, try each of these steps, testing after each to see if the issue is resolved:
Make sure that you're using iOS 5 or later. If you meet these requirements but your issue continues, try installing the latest version of iOS supported by your device.
Make sure that your iCloud account is configured correctly in Settings. For instructions on setting up iOS for iCloud, see iCloud Setup. Reminders is a separate data type on iOS. It must be enabled via the Reminders setting in Settings > iCloud.
Make sure your iOS device is online. Attempt to view www.apple.com. If you can't connect to the Internet, your iCloud Reminders will not update in Calendar. Learn about troubleshooting your Internet connection.
Open a secure website to test if ports 80 and 443 are accessible. Reminders requires port 443 access to iCloud to push and fetch updates to and from the iCloud Calendar and Reminders servers.
If recent changes don't appear in Reminders, try forcing a refresh. In iOS 7:
    Open the Calendar app.
Tap the Calendars tab to load the Calendars list.
Pull down on the list to refresh both calendar events and reminders.
If recent changes simply don't appear in Reminders, try forcing a refresh. In iOS 6 and 5:
    Open the Calendar app.
Tap Calendars in the top-left corner to load the Calendars list.
Tap the Refresh button in the lower-left of the Calendars list.
Quit and restart the Reminders app on your iOS device.
In iOS 7, press the Home button.
Press the Home button twice to see preview screens of the apps you have open.
Find the Reminders preview screen and swipe it up and out of preview to quit the application.
Quit and restart the Reminders app on your iOS device.
In iOS 6 and iOS 5, press the Home button.
Press the Home button twice to open the multitasking menu.
Press and hold the Reminders icon until it jiggles.
Tap the red circle in the upper-left corner to quit the app.
Press the Home button to get back to your Home screen. Wait a minute before reopening the Calendar app.
Change the Sync settings for your calendars:
In iOS 7 and iOS 6, tap Settings > Reminders.
In iOS 5, tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars, then scroll down to the bottom to the Reminders section.
Tap Sync. If Sync is set to All Reminders, set it to a specific duration, such as Reminders 1 Month Back. If it's already set to a specific duration, set it to All Reminders.
Wait several minutes and refresh again, as described previously. Then open the Reminders app again.
Turn iCloud Reminders off and back on:
    Tap Settings > iCloud.
Turn off Reminders. Choose to delete data only if your reminders exist at icloud.com/#reminders and on one or more of your devices. Otherwise, choose Keep Data.
Wait a few minutes before turning Reminders back on.
Restart your iOS device: Hold down the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears, then drag the slider. After the device turns off, turn it back on by pressing the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears. This may sound simple, but it reinitializes your network and application settings and can frequently resolve issues.

  • How can I get Mail to sync properly with Gmail?

I'm finally getting around to setting up my Mail account. I had used it waaaay back in '08, since then I have gotten thousands upon thousands of emails, when Mail opens up it thinks these are all messages I have not read and I have literally something like 3K unread messages (and counting) is there a way I can set it up to read my Gmail account the way it is so I don't have to go through deleting all of these?
One other question: I'd like to set up my work email as well, since right now its Outlook online and God how I hate Outlook Online any special settings to make this work?
    Thanks!

You have not clarified if you are using the POP method or IMAP. From what I can figure, you may be using POP method.
If you want mail synced across your devices, you need to set up all accounts as IMAP.
There are excellent blogs and articles out there, just type 'setting up IMAP on mac' or something similar in search engine. here is a good one http://oreilly.com/pub/a/mac/2002/05/21/imap.html
There will still be a one time sync process but the status of the messages will not be 'unread' by default as you say.

I just purchased a new 4s to replace my old 3GS. When i connect my new 4s and trying to sync to i-tunes to apps from my 3gs snyc will not come into my 4s. I also have a i-pad2 that also snyc's to the same computer.
Should i un-install my itunes, re-install i-tunes on my PC, sync my old 3gs again and then try to sync my 4s again?

I have a problem with sorting playlists using iPhone 4/iOS 5 and iTunes 10.5. I use the field "comments" to sort my playlists, when sorting by the field "comments" ascending everything is OK, but when "sorting" by the field "comments" descending it keeps appearing ascending.
I also notice that the name of the playlists appear inverted between iTunes and iPhone.
I did not have this problem before, this a new issue with iTunes 10.5/iOS 5. Need help to fix these sorting issue problems in iTunes 10.5.

  • IPhone not syncing properly with iTunes 10.5

    Hi,
I recently updated my iPhone 4 to the iOS 5 and also updated my iTunes to 10.5. A few days later I got an error message on my iTunes which said that the library was damaged, it would create and new one and save the 'old' one has "iTunes Library (Damaged)". Shortly after I synced my phone with iTunes and it removed many of my apps and all my playlists and music. I've re-downloaded all my apps, though any pictures, settings, etc saved within them have disappeared. I cleared the music on my phone and re-synced it. Any playlists which were re-synced only actually synced recently added songs (i.e. if a playlist had 20 songs and I added 3 more only those 3 would show up on my phone).
I think all my data, apps, etc are still on the phone but iTunes isn't recognising it; any ideas of how to get iTunes to recognise it?
    Thanks!
If it helps or makes a difference, I'm using Windows Vista.

Same thing (?) is happening with my iPhone4. Syncing wirelessly doesn't work at all, and when I connect it to my Mac, sync gets stuck on 'Syncing Genius Data to _____' and under that it says "waiting for items to copy". This is also the case with my iPod Touch 4th gen. Both are on iOS5 and I have the latest iTunes. So I just backup both of them, and then choose the sync button on bottom right of iTunes in the device window. Don't know if it's actually doing anything.
    This *****.
