I have an older ipod clickwheel. It worked beautifully until 10/15/08 when my computer ("computer A") automatically installed Windows Vista updates. When I connected my ipod to the computer's USB port, I got a nasty whirring sound and it did not appear in Windows or itunes. I toggled hold switch, reset and disconnected. I then connected it to my laptop ("computer B") and it worked perfectly. Now laptop has automatically installed Windows updates (Windows 2003, not Vista) and the ipod is doing same thing on that computer -- endless whirring, frozen up, not recognized by Windows or itunes. When I reset my ipod, it works fine, but I can't update any of my music/podcasts because it won't sync. It's forever stuck on 10/15/08 content. What should I try next? Thanks

If you can get the iPod recognized in iTunes, you can always attempt to restore it: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1339
However, if it's not recognized in iTunes you can attempt to format it using Disk Mode, using your Windows OS (just like you would format any drive). Here is a good article on what to do if the iPod is not seen in iTunes: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1373?viewlocale=en_US
Unfortunately beyond that, especially if it's making whirring or clicking sounds, it can be a hardware failure which would require service: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1382

ipod touch 5th gen will not sync after windows 8.1 update. Computer see's Itouch as mass storage and charges. Worked with Window's 8 fine, as soon as update was done and restarted computer Itouch doesn't show up. Itouch seen on two other computers.

Apple TV not syncing purchases back to iTunes
My Apple TV is not syncing purchases back to iTunes. All music and TV shows I've purchased through Apple TV since the upgrade to ATV 2.0 is still not showing up in iTunes.
In iTunes, when I click on Apple TV in the left pane I see only the "Summary" and "Photos" tabs. On the main Summary window there is no button to "Sync" Apple TV. Neither are there any options for setting this up in iTunes Preferences, or in any of the on-screen settings in Apple TV itself. I can stream content just fine, I just don't see how to enable syncing back and forth. Am I missing something?

TomAny idea how to get ATV to sync with iTunes? Is there some way to enable syncing to move purchased ATV content over to iTunes? I was under the assumption that this should happen automatically with 2.0. I also recall with ATV 1.0 that I DID at one point disable syncing in favor of streaming, and perhaps this setting somehow transferred over to ATV 2.0 ?
Funny, others on this forum are trying to disable the automatic transfer of ATV content to iTunes, while I'm trying to get it to work! -
I need some help. I want to sync my iPod touch 4th generation and it WILL NOT sync. I reinstalled iTunes and it still won't sync. I also let my friend use my sync cord, could that have anything to do with my problem?? I really need some help. So please answer me back if you know what could be wrong.

I recently updated iTunes to version 11.5.5, and now my iPhone 5 will not sync up completely with iTunes. ITunes will recognize and sync up, but I now cannot manage my music on my phone. Also, all of my playlists on my iPhone were wiped out. It would be great to retrieve my phone playlists, but more important, be able to manage my music again. I'm running on Windows 7 and I own iPhone 5. Suggestions?
I have windows 8, I'm not sure if that has anything to do with anything, but i figured maybe 11.1.4 just doesn't like 8. soooo.. i went onto my computer settings and uninstalled anything and everything made my apple and then reinstalled itunes 11.1.3 and it now reads my ipod nano happy day thanks apple for making something that you can't help me with at all

ITouch not connecting to windows or itunes, and will not charge.
Okay, so, I was charging my iTouch one day in my computer, and every time I plug it in, iTunes launches and then starts to automatically sync my iTouch, which I DO NOT WANT. Anyways, I quit the sync from itunes as I always do, but this time, when I tried to quit, nothing happened and itunes froze up. 1 Ctrl+Alt+Dlt later, I tried to end the program, it was being pesky so I had to try and end it a few times. My iTouch finished charging and I hane not thought anything of it since then. The day after that, I was trying to charge my iTouch before work, and I went to get ready while it was charging. I came back to an iTouch that was not charged at all. It does not connect to Windows or iTunes, but still for some reason retains enough battery to display the battery symbol. I have used the iTunes helper to try and guide me through the problem, but the steps I took did not fix the problem and I do not feel like taking my iTouch in to get serviced. So, in overview, my iTouch will not charge, connect to windows or iTunes, all after I ended iTunes from the task manager. My iTunes works just fine, my iTouch is the problem. I dont know what operating system it is running on, and I dont know how to update it, but it is at least 4.3.1.
P.S. I would love to get some speedy help on this. If its any reward, you have many internets up for grabs for answering my question. Over 9000 ^_^- Try resetting the iPod:
Reset iPod touch: Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Next try placing the iPOd in recovery mode to see if that will make the iPod visible in iTunes so you can restore the iPod. For recovery mode see:

Try downloading an installer from the Apple website using a different web browser:

i just got my ipad 2 and when i go to trun it on it has a picture with itunes prompting me to sync up. When i do this it does not sync up with my itunes. I can not turn my ipad2 on. Any one out there got any answers. Appreciate the help
The first thing that has to be done with a new iPad is to activate it via iTunes. What version of iTunes, and what spec computer, have you got ? The iPad's minimum requirements are (from http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/) :

i want to say that i read a lot EVERYWHERE about my issue and still i couldnt find a solution...
the problem is easy, i have a 3rd gen ipod touch, OS 4.2.1 now fully working... but, it's not detected in windows or itunes, as simple as that, and as u all have read in lots of other posts...
my ipod is now working because i took it to an apple store and they charged it in a MAC and they had no problem at all. the MAC detected the ipod, with all its content and my ipod's name...
but when i took it home -this has been hapenning since maybe... 5 MONTHS!-, i plug it in my PC and nothing happens...
ok, first of all, my spec... win vista home premium 64 bits, last version of itunes...
i tried ALL the solutions provided in APPLE official support page, and nothing happens... that means:
1- completely uninstall itunes and then reinstalling it... i ALSO FORMATED my entire hard drive twice!!!!
2- tried all USB ports and even an entirely different PC and nothing happened
3- bought 3 different IPOD to USB cables and nothing happened
4- tried setting ipod to restore, that way itunes SOMETIMES detected the ipod but i coulnt restore because of different error codes, so i had to take it several times to apple store to "unblock" it...
the only way it works -detection and charge- is with MAC computers or dock systems such as an iHome my gf has thats the way im charging it now, but otherwise it wont work...
i would really appreciate any help, since idont know what else to do!!

Now it has finally restored after I updated all kinds of drivers and removed and reinstalled itunes and apple software a million times,(yes this is all after installing itunes 8.1 and paying for an itouch upgrade as well) Now itunes says it cannot do anything with the ipod because it is getting an invalid response from the device. So it won't put anything back on my itouch or even show that I have plugged it in. I emailed tech support, If I find anything out I'll let you know, will you do the same for me?

Hello everyone. I have a 5th generation Ipod I recently purchased that I'm having what seems to be an common issue. When I connect the ipod to my computer via USB, the Ipod is not recognized in windows or Itunes. Occasionally the Ipod will charge when connected but not always. Though this is the same for the old wire I used and the new one I purchased today. Even when shown charging the Ipod is not recognized and there is no noise that a device has been connected. I have tried the 4 R's (without Restore) which I can't do, chaninging the drive letter, disabling start up software,uninstalling and reinstalling all Apple Software. I have tried connecting to another computer and have gotten the same result. When I check the diagnostic screen on the ipod it shows that a usb cable is detected. I have upgraded all my driver software, disabled and reenabled them. I'm almost 3 hours from the nearest store so that it out of the question. I'm curious if anyone has any other ideas and will try anything you think might be the issue and fix. Thank you for time.
From my experience, the only way you're gonna get a PC afflicted with this disease to work with a 5th gen nano is to roll back to an earlier version of iTunes. Those affected have been exhausted by this ongoing issue. To update or not to update? And I always say never update unless you have to, and turn off all that auto update mess!
I have two core2duo lappies running 32b vista. My workflow dictates 32b fyi. One is acer aspire running itunes v 11.1 (.0.126), 5th gen nano was originally formatted and works just fine on this machine to this day. My other is the bigger badder lenovo thinkpad and the 5th gen will NOT mount using any version of itunes past 11.0 (.1.12) Windows mounts it just fine. itunes is not having it. no shirt no shoes no service.
I have both a 4th and 5th gen nano. The 4th gen works great on both machines, I even successfully tested it with the latest version (11.1.5) before subsequent deletion on the thinkpad! Weird huh? I think my next experiment might be to restore my 5th gen w/ a Mac and theeeeen plug it into PC itunez.
I'm at a loss on the thinkpad. Scanned for intruders. Cut the Lenovo bloat. Executed system and reg maintenance. Took down msconfig to a safe mode + itunes level to attempt to resolve possible sw conflicts but to no avail. NO NO NO. Every single dang port, every time on the thinkpad. Has me feeling like others might get the same treatment by the next itunes update. :|
So in summary for me:
5th gen nano and thinkpad are a NoGo on 11.1^ last working version for me = 11.0.1
5th gen nano is working on an acer aspire 11.1.0 but no way in the world am I updating
4th gen nano is kicking 5th gen nano's @zz so what would make me want to buy a new ipod? -
im trying to update to newest ios version. but during the proccess, an unknown error accured, now the device wont do anything, just shows the plug into itunes screen. the device does not show in windows or itunes. the iphone wont do anything. i tried restarting, it shuts off and back on, but only shows plug into itunes thing. any ideas?

Device not recognized by Windows or iTunes - Blinking green light
When I try to connect my iPod shuffle to my computer (Windows XP), it's not recognized by Windows or iTunes. (i.e. device does not appear in Windows explorer or iTunes) While in the USB port, the Shuffle's green light blinks incessantly. My wife uses an iPod on this machine (under separate user name) and has no problems.
I've tried updating software (iTunes, iPod), restarting my computer and resetting the iPod to no avail. My machine is not on a network. The USB port(s) work fine as I can use my memory stick (no USB cable) with no problems. I've tried connecting my Shuffle under my user name as well as my wife's. Same problem.
Also, I had my Shuffle setup on an old computer (PC, Windows 2000) and it still works fine plugging into that. (I'm getting rid of it soon, hence why I'm discovering these new problems).
Please advise. Since my Shuffle is over a year old, I am not eligible for online chat or phone support without paying for an Apple Support agreement.

Thanks to anyone who can help.Recently I used my ipod at work all night, just like normal. After work on the way home, like normal, I plugged it into my aux port on my car's head unit, and plugged it into power. 10 minutes later, in the middle of going over Ortgea Highway(hiway 74 between Orange and Riverside Counties), it just suddenly stopped working. When I plug it into any of my computers at home, nothing happens, it is not recognized or seen. When I plug it into power, it displays either a "sad ipod icon" or a battery with exclamation mark(!) icon. I have brand new power adapters both for the car and home, plus brand new usb cables, thinking that would help. It hasn't and now, since I opened those packages, I am out that $$ and ******. Since I received this unit as payment for electrical services rendered, I have no idea how old it is. Does anyone have any ideas? ([email protected])
