Not the right hard drive?

I should have a 720gb hard drive but it only is 650gb. is there a reason why.. e.g wrong hard drive, does it use some gb for system?

Is the hard drive itself says it has 650gb?
Please note, Windows and hdd manufacture caucluates the stronge differently.
Windows uses different way to caulate the capacity compared to manufactures.

  • Choosing the right hard drive upgrade

I will be looking to upgrade the hard drive on my Macbook and while I know the general specifications (2.5" SATA) I'm not sure if certain brands are more trusted or if I need to steer clear of some, etc. I have a quite limited budget but I'm only looking for an 80GB hard drive. I found a couple of options and I was wondering if anyone could recommend one of them or if one looks better than another. I don't even know what to look for in terms of quality, etc. Any help would be much appreciated!

    Thanks.

If you want to replace the hard drive, I would suggest that you upgrade capacity as well as speed. Going from the stock 60GB drive to an 80GB unit is a small increase for the price you would pay, even if it is a 7200RPM drive.
It is obviously entirely up to you, but I suggest a larger drive and a faster one if you want to upgrade.
That said, I am a fan of Seagate and Western Digital drives. The only thing that concerns me about Seagate is that some users have reported problems with their drives in iMacs due to a firmware incompatability. They would work, but take a long time to come out of sleep and be sluggish until they did.
I suggest that you buy from someone like OWC that will make sure the drive will work for you. I am not saying Macmall won't but I have personal experience with OWC and they are great guys with pre- and post-sales support that will amaze you.
Either of those drive will likely work fine. You can check the drive database over at xlr8yourmac.com and see what other users might have experienced.

  • Is this the right Hard drive for my macbook??

    Hi,
I have a macbook core duo, 1.83GHZ 1GB Ram and 60GB hard drive.
iam looking to upgrade it to this hard drive i have found, will it work in my macbook?
    Here's the link http://www.microwarehouse.co.uk/catalogue/item/SEADR506.
    Cheers for the help.

    Ho dood,
found this on amazon.co.uk (there may be more, I suppose): http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lindy-4002888430128-5pc-Precision-Torx/dp/B0000934GO/ref =pdsbs_ce2/026-2526034-8773264
I am not sure, if the required size is within this.
    For enclosures, I found these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nbss_w_h/026-6189343-5162862?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Harddisk+enclosure&Go .x=0&Go.y=0&Go=Go
But I'm not quite convinced about the quality of these, maybe some UKs can chime in.

  • Itunes wont download to the right hard drive

tried installing itunes by changing the install to a specified folder on a hard drive, but it installs to my 16 gb SSD running windows 7, 64-bit. im running out of space and quickly need it on my HDD any ideas?

iTunes itself only takes up about 125mb.
In Edit > Preferences > Advanced the media folder can be directed to any other location accessible from your computer.
Are you sure that you need to move iTunes off the SSD?

My iMac suddenly can't read the backup hard drive I've been using for Time Machine.  I tried unplugging the cord that connects the HD to the iMac and plugging it back in, but I still get "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" below which are buttons for Initialize, Ignore and Eject.  I was using a cord that went from larger square plug to larger square plug.  So then I tried one that went from smaller square plug to what I think is USB (thin rectangular plug) of the sort that connects the keyboard and mouse. It's the type that my printers and scanners use to connect to the iMac.  I did NOT just upgrade the OS or anything.  The external HD is an OWC Mercury Elite All Pro. It's worked fine since I got the iMac 4 years ago. What else can I try before just trying to initialize and

Thanks, Michael!  I do hear it at times spooling up and running. Just after I bumped the thread I looked for troubleshooting for this drive online and found the manual which suggested using Disk Utility which I've seen before accidentally (if I hit Command Shift U instead of Shift U to type "Unit" on a new folder for a student's homework ) but had never really noticed.   Disk Utility does see it and also a sub-something (directory?) which might be the Time Machine archives on the disk, called disk1s2), sort of the way that my iMac's hard drive shows up as 640.14 GB Nitachi HDT7... and has a sub-something titled DB iMac, which is what I named my iMac's hard drive.
Anyway the owner's manual just shows the image under the formatting section, not the troubleshooting section, but as soon as I saw it in the manual I remembered seeing it accidentally a few times, went to it, and am now verifying the disk.  Right now it's telling me that it will take 2 hours to complete the verification, so I guess I have a bigt of a wait.  :-)
Does that fact that Disk Utilities can see it mean it's not failed, or just that it hasn't completely failed?
I can see the virtue in having multiple redundant backups, or at least two backups. What do you suggest?  Two external hard drives?  I had this one linked by ethernet, and but I also have a cord that could link it by USB (like a printer), so if this one is reparable I could get a second one and link it by USB.  If this one is not reparable I could get two and do the same thing.  I do have an Airport so I suppose it's possible to get some sort of Wi-Fi hard drive (my new printer/scanner uses only the network and not a cable, although it has a cable that I used for the initial installation), but I'd suspect a Wi-Fi hard drive might have a higher price.
What hard drives, if any, do you recommend? I seem to recall that when I was looking at external hard drives 4 years ago, Apple's were substantially more expensive, which is why I got the OWC Mercury Elite All Pro.

  • LR is not able to pull up my photos. I have checked and the external hard drive is working but none of the thousands of photos are showing up. What can I do to get LR to recognize and pull up my photos.

LR is not abel to pull up my photos. There is the explanation mark on all the photos meaning that LR can not find them. The external hard drive is working. I have even changed the usb cord to see if that was the problem. I have been able to pull up the photos individually off of the  external hard drive so that is working.

Yes, yes, yes! I do recall that I changed the drive letter but it did not register on the Finder so I had forgotten about it. Now it works and LR is now able to read the drive. Thank you sooooooo much. BTW, dealing with Adobe on this product is exceptionally frustrating since you can't talk to a human being on the phone. Rick, Can't thank you enough for pointing me in the right direction.

Let's hope a couple things: that you have bootable clones of your drives also; that the backup drive for TimeMachine has over 3x capacity of the data you plan and are storing. I would also switch TM backup drives so you have a 2nd.
Fragmented free space affecting performance happens when the drive is too full which may mean there isn't enough free space for a full backup set.
1.5TB for backing up 500GB, while WD Green 3TB is $140 and WD Black 1.5TB is, about the same price.
I'd be worried about the integrity and directory, and whether you can afford to lose that drive. Defragging is also a very slow operation. the ideal: to just clone a drive, or start over with another drive and wait. cloning TM volumes has not been done or has it? SuperDuper hoped to but I don't think they or Bombich's CCC made it there.
Trouble with highly fragged is when free space gets to 20% normally, 1/3 or so though for TM volumes, and finding where and a chunk of space for the file being written. Does TM use large spare image files of like 2GB?
Best would be to ask in the TimeMachine section Snow Leopard

I just had to reformat the external hard drive that houses my iPhoto library, then restore it from a backup. Now Time Machine is telling me my backup hard drive suddenly does not have the space to complete a backup. I also noticed when I go in to Time Machine, there are only about 5 backups recorded on the ext. hard drive. There were many more before. Any idea what happened and if I have to buy a new back up hard drive?

    Hallo  Kieth ,
I am not quite ready to restore the full iphoto library , as I have days of work re - imputting titles, descriptions and enhancement . I hope that your suggestion works , as I use my Macbook basically to work with digital photography. Through time , I will need to delete my library to recover more disc space and I would hate to have to spend more time re - imputting titles and descriptions all over again .
Thanks for your interest and advice.

I have an iMac purchased in May 2011.  OSX Lion 10.7.3.  I deleted backup file from the external hard drive which operates from Time Machine.
Now, the trash can will not empty some of the files deleted from the backup harddrive.
The trash contains-- File folder: "Core Services" which contains a locked file: "boot.efi".
    It will not delete.
How do I get the trash can empty of these files?

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

I lost my iTunes library on my pc when the hard drive crashed. None of the data on the drive was recoverable and I did not have a backup either locally or on the cloud. Much of the music is from old vinyl and podcasts which are no longer available.
How can I get the music that resides on my ipod nano (4th generation) back onto the new hard drive on my pc.
I have been reluctant to install iTunes on the new hard drive out of fear that I will lose all the contents on the ipod if I try to synch to the new hard drive.

No backup is a huge mistake.

There are a number of posts related to access issues between Windows Vista / 7 and AirPort Disks. Two potential solutions being forwarded are: 1) Changing the LAN Manager authentication level, and/or 2) Disabling the Windows Search feature.
To change the LAN Manager authentication level:
From the Windows Vista / 7 desktop, click Start
    Search for: security
    Click 'Local Security Policy'
Goto Local Policies > Security Options
Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: LAN Manager authentication level'
Change level to: Send LM & NTLM responses
Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including RPC) clients'
    De-select 'Require 128-bit encryption'
    Click OK
     To disable Windows Search:
Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features
On the right-hand side, click "Turn Windows features on/off"
Scroll down, and de-select "Windows Search".
Press OK, close all windows and restart.
A third "solution," that has worked for me, is verify that both the AirPort base station and the Win7 PC are using the exact same Workgroup Name. In my case, I use "WORKGROUP" (without the quote marks) for this name. From the AirPort Utility, you would enter this value on the Disks > File Sharing tab. On Win7, Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System > Change Settings > Change > Workgroup

  • I have a MacPro with two 1T hard drives. How do I access the hard drive that is not the start-up drive?

I purchased a MacPro and upgraded to 2 1T hard drives.  How do I access the hard drive that is not the start-up drive?

Have you formatted these new drives yet with Disk Utility?  That is the first step.
Once they are formatted, if you want to see them on your desktop open the Finder preferences, General, and clock the checkbox that says "Show these items on the desktop" for the hard disks.  If that preference was already set you should see the drives appear after they are formatted.  Then they are there for you to use as you wish.

I just bought a mac mini over the weekend. I saved items from my old G4 to an external hard drive. I go to plug in the external hard drive and the new computer is not recognizing it. Help.
Here is the information I have. The external hard drive is a 120GB Acomdata. It has both USB and Firewire. When I go to plug in to the mac mini through USB, it is not being recognized. When I switch to Firewire on the old computer I can see it, however when I go to USB it is not being recognized (even on the old computer).
I'm at a loss as to what to do. Any advice would be helpful.

Have you ever tried the FW 400 to 800 adapter?
I have used them on multiple occasions and they work just fine.
Try this (maybe you already have):
    -Boot Mini with drive disconnected.
-Do not connect drive but turn it on
-wait a few seconds for drive to spin up
-plug cable into the Mini then into drive.
This is an old drive and may have some timing
    issues.
I had an Acomdata drive a long time ago.  It
worked fine with FW but USB was flakey.

That's a bummer, didn't realize the exHD files were corrupt, esp if you have tried from another PC and not just this new computer.
You can get purchases from the itunes store transferred from an iPod using these directions:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848?viewlocale=en_US
If you want everything (meaning non-itunes songs, app data, photos, etc) you need to buy a 3rd-party ipod manager that support iTouch. Here is an iLounge article to start your research:
