Not your typical C&Q question

Ok, my turn to ask a question. If I disable C&Q in BIOS I assume that the fan speed would be max. Right. I have quiet fans that I can not hear (6 including CPU, PSU). I do not need the quiet function.

I'm asking this because I also want my fan at full speed all the time, but I have seen its MAX speed change acording to the CPU temperature, with BOTH Smart Fan Target AND Cool'nQuiet DISABLED, and NOT using any software to control the fans.
Here is what I did, I disabled Smart Fan Speed control in BIOS.  Cool n Quiet disabled or enabled doesn't matter.  I realized that my  fan speed would still sometimes ramp up and down even though I wasn't currently running software fan speed control - see syar2003's post above about the reason why.  Basically you have to disable fan speed control in Corecenter once, and not mess with it again.
So I opened Corecenter, clicked on the logo at the top, which opens that window that MSI mistakenly calls Cool n Quiet.  I set that to manual and moved the slider all the way to the right.  Then closed Corecenter and never messed with it again except to check temps sometimes.
After that, my CPU fan is always at maximum RPM's, regardless of whether Cool n Quiet is enabled or disabled in BIOS.  The max RPM's depend on the hardware specifications of your CPU fan.  In my system, the cpu fan runs 3300 - 3400 RPM at maximum.
Now if I want to turn on fan speed control, I just enable it in BIOS.  I don't mess with Corecenter at all.
Sorry about my earlier rampage, I know it's frustrating and confusing.  Hopefully we'll all figure out what works best for ourselves sooner or later

• Migrate from G4 to new Macbook.. Not your typical question

Good morning.
My wife was using an iBook G4 for some time. Our 13 month old grandson one day made a quick move and pulled on the display, pulling it towards him. The machine now only shows a grey/white screen when booting. It sounds like it is starting (chime, you can hear the drives, etc.) but nothing on the display. I haven't tried connecting it to an external display as I haven't been able to find the mini connector.
In any event, I think it's time to get my wife a new MacBook. My question is, if she decides she wants to migrate from the old iBook and not start from scratch, is that possible without being able to "see" the activity on the old iBook? If so, what would I need to do?
Thanks.

I would actually recommend attaching an external monitor to your iBook and just transfer the data over. Unfortunately you might have to spend extra if you don't have the adapter. You can then use any ethernet cable, attach one end on the Mac and another end to your new one and then enable the transfer.

• Not your typical Ringtone question.

All,
I love my iPhone but hate the included ringtones. I DO NOT want a song for a ringtone, I just want something like I had on my old Samsung (and louder). I browsed the iTunes store for ringtones and search by popularity and I get celebrity impersonations or someone *******.
I am sure I am not the first person to want business style ringtones?
Thanks for your help,
tim

I agree with you. I have made a couple of song ringtones from iTunes to assign to specific contacts - how could I resist Green Day's version of the Simpsons Theme for my buddy who's last name is Simpson??
But, I had some really great rings on my BlackBerry that I would love to have on my iPhone. I'm hopeful Apple will include some non-song ringtones in iTunes soon.

• LR Color Management - Calibration and Monitor (not your typical post)

Hi everybody,
I see that there are still many issues around color management and printing in LR. I have had similar problems in past and Im still trying to work though them. The most touted problem is not calibrating or having a bad monitor profile. Well, I have tried calibrating my display with worse results. I get better results with an un-calibrated display, not exact results, but closer than with a calibrated display. My only computer is a Dell Latitude D830 with an LCD display and Nvidia Quadro 140M graphics card with a Spyder2 Suite calibration tool.
After doing a fair bit of research online and speaking to other photographers (pro and amateur) Ive learned that laptop displays are notoriously difficult to calibrate due to their inability to display a wide range of color and contrast. There is also no way to adjust white point, RGB or any other setting on my display, only brightness and contrast. (perhaps a big part of the problem?)
I was told that only high end displays (NEC, LaCie, Eizo etc @ $1000,00 this being the low end, and up) were the only way to get accurate colors. Others had said that LG and Samsung make a decent display at the $300.00 price point that would deliver good results but not pro level color management. Other than that go, back to an old CRT display. What is a semi-pro level display that renders excellent color that I wont have to re-mortgage my house to pay for?
So heres my question to all of those who have said you need to calibrate and you have a bad profile can you please tell us your system set up (i.e. display, calibration tool, room lighting and set up etc..)?
Im really interested in what you are doing more, better or differently than everyone else.
Thanks,
DC

>Im really interested in what you are doing more, better or differently than everyone else.
Nothing much. Same calibrator in addition to another Huey Pro which gives almost indistinguishable results. I use both a Apple Mac Book Pro and a Mac Pro with a 30" DELL wide gamut adobeRGB display. Colors on the two are identical (if they're not outside of the laptop's gamut) and identical to prints from labs and direct prints. Of course these displays are between far better and quite a bit better than the display on a typical Dell laptop that are notoriously bad. One of the things I have to do on the laptop is to get the display at the right angle. The trick I use is to have a window open with this image: http://www.normankoren.com/monitor_test_txt22.png
from this website: http://www.normankoren.com/makingfineprints1A.html
If you're looking at your monitor at the right angle and you have calibrated the display correctly, the color should look homogeneous (i.e. completely neutral and the same grey everywhere). If you cannot find an angle at which this is correct, than it is likely your monitor can simply not be calibrated or that your calibrator is defective (there was a batch of defective Spyders a while ago). In general, it is certainly not true that laptop displays cannot be calibrated.
>I was told that only high end displays (NEC, LaCie, Eizo etc @ $1000,00 this being the low end, and up) were the only way to get accurate colors. Others had said that LG and Samsung make a decent display at the $300.00 price point that would deliver good results but not pro level color management.
They are quite wrong and a rather snooty thing to say. The point of these high priced displays is that they will give better color in non-colormanaged applications, but with a good calibrator, a reasonably good screen and correct color management (such as that in Lightroom, Photoshop, preview.app, Safari, etc.) you will get about as good color as the more expensive displays. Some of these, such as the EIZO give you wider gamuts higher bit color, or hardware adjustable white point, which are also a major selling points if you're doing very critical work but only if paired with good calibration and managed apps. Pro level color management is a function of the calibrator and the software - and only in part of the display. Most displays, with a few exceptions, can be made to give good color, as long as you use a hardware calibrator and managed apps.

• Root password expired - not your typical case

Hello everyone,
I apologize for asking what is a very FAQ, but I am unable to find an appropriate answer anywhere on the interweb.
The facts of my unfortunate situation are:
1. I am a newbie in the SA world.
2. I am even more of a newbie in the Solaris world.
3. I am administering a Production Database system on Solaris 9.
4. Within the last couple days the root password expired.
5. When I attempt to login at the console as root, I receive the following message. "Roles can only be assumed by authorized users."
It seems to me that root ought to be authorized to login to the console.
I've read that I can boot from the CD to resolve this issue, but the system in question has the CD drive disabled. If only I could figure out how to login to the console as root, I'm sure that it would let me update the password, but I don't know how to work around the "Roles can only be assumed by authorized users" issue.
Please help!
Thanks in advance for your assistance. It is greatly appreciated.

Well, I've learned an awful lot in the process of trying to resolve this issue. I'm still not there, but I'm getting close.
I have done a ton of research on the net, and I am unable to find any specific detailed instructions on how to fix the root password expired issue. So, I figured I would paraphrase what I believe are the detailed steps to be taken. If you see an error in my logic, or my syntax please let me know, as I will be beginning this process soon.
So, we have RBAC or Role Based Access Control on the Solaris 9 box, and the root password has expired. This is a pretty annoying situation to be in, but it can be fixed easily enough.
First, we'll want to gracefully shutdown all the processes which are currently running on the system. This is accomplished by executing the following command which will put the system into single user mode:
init -1
Determine where your root file system (e.g. c1t0d0s0) is located by typing the following command (you'll want to make note of the result):
/etc/vfstab
Next, we need to access the EEPROM. Before doing this, you should do execute the following command to see if your EEPROM is password protected.
eeprom |grep security
Look for the line that reads "security-mode=" If security mode is set to "none" or "none-secure" you're golden, proceed with the next step. If security mode is set to "command" "command-secure" "fully" or "fully-secure" you want to make sure you have your EEPROM password, otherwise you'll be in worse shape than when you started.
Assuming that you either have the EEPROM password, OR the system is set to "security-mode=none" you can proceed to the EEPROM prompt by pressing the following key combination:
Stop + A
You should now have an OK> prompt. Insert the Solaris 9 Installation CD into the CDRom drive. At the prompt type the following command to boot from your CD rom:
boot cdrom -sw
Once the boot sequence is complete, execute the following command to mount your root filesystem.
mount /dev/dsk/<root filesystem device file> /mnt
Once you have mounted the root file system, you will need to change the /etc/user_attr file to allow console access by root. Open /etc/user_attr with your editor of choice. On the line beginning with root::::type=role; etc etc change the setting type=role to type=normal and save the user_attr file.
Enter the following command to go back to the OK prompt:
halt
Then enter boot -s to reboot your system. You should now be able to login to the console with root, which will allow you to update your password. Once you have done so, do an init -3 to bring the user back up to the standard mode of operation.
Thanks again Jeffery for your help in this matter. I hope to have this situation resolved soon, but I want to make sure that all my ducks are in a row before I start playing Russian Roulette with my server. Does the above walkthrough sound accurate? Is there anything that I have misuderstood or overlooked?

• Not your typical firmware update problem

Let me start by saying I have read many posts on here about updating the firmware and my problem does not appear to be typical.
I downloaded iTunes recently and it offered to update my iPod software. Thinking, "Hey, its not Windows, its probably safe to update." I foolishly clicked ok. That's when all my troubles started.
I have an older, 10GB, been nothing but trouble, iPod I purchased around 2002-2003 time frame.
I updated the firmware as described above. The download went smoothly and it asked me to plug the iPod into my power supply. I didn't have the original wall adapter (dang gremlins), so I tried my car charger - no luck. I went down and purchased a new wall adapter (Griffin brand) - no luck. I tried "Pat's sketchy power supply" solution posted on this forum - no luck.
Here's what is happening, even plugged into the wall charger, when i wake the iPod up i get the icon telling me to plug it in to the adapter.
I have tried various reset methods but of course these don't work because the firmware isn't even running.
My fear is that the firmware download got corrupted, or Apple failed to tell me that this update was not intended for an old iPod. However, I would like to set that possibility aside for a moment and ask if anyone has any other ideas or suggestions I could try. Thanks!
Literally hundreds of rare tracks are at stake!

Hmmm well do you still have the original CD that came with the iPod. If so, you may be able to install the stand alone updater application off that and restore your iPod back to how it was when you bought it.
Of course, I don't know if the updater will require you to do a full restore to go backwards which means you would be forced to lose everything on the iPod.
Are the rare tracks NOT in your iTunes library?

• HELP!!! Not your average Serial Number question!

Hey guys, I'm in a bit of a rut. I'm not asking for a serial number, I just need to know where on my computer to find it.
STORY:
I had to erase my mac because Avid messed it all up. Yay Avid!. Anyways, I'm covered for backups though. I have a time machine backup, a bootable external that I cloned as my hard drive pre-erase, and a disk image of my computer pre-erase.
I'm reinstalling all the apps, including FCS 2, but I got the upgrade version. I no longer have the box for Final Cut Studio 1 (or 5.1 or whatever we're calling it) but I have the serial number that I wrote on a post it fromthe last time I did this. My handwriting is legible, but for whatever reason, the FCS installer is accepting the FCS2 upgrade serial, but not the FCS1 serial. Since I have so many copies of my computer pre-erase, I remember before I was able to find a file (can't remember which program, possibly FCP) that had the serial number somewhere in the library folder.
QUESTION: Is there somewhere on the copies of my hard drive pre-erase where that FCS1 serial could be hidden? I need it so I install FCS2, without which, is worthless . And so am I, without my editing software :P.
THANKS GUYS! You're always a big help.

I no longer have the box for Final Cut Studio 1 (or 5.1 or whatever we're calling it)
Do you have the original Apple-branded disks for FCS 5.1?
y/n
No disks = no software just a stolen serial number written on a post-it note.

Please read my question carefully, this is, I think, a question for the experts. It's not the usual name change question.
When I setup my new MacBook Pro, something slipped by me and my computer was named First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro (using my real first and last name).
I changed the computer name in Preferences/Sharing to a new name and Preferences/Accounts to just be Mike. I can right click on my account name, choose advanced, and see that everything looks right.
However, If I do a scan of my network with my iPhone using the free version of IP Scanner, it lists my computer as First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro! And it lists the user as First-Last.
So even though another Mac just sees my new computer name, and my home folder is Mike, somewhere in the system the original setup with my full name is still stored. And it's available on a network scan. So my full name might show up at a coffee shop.
Can I fully change the name without doing a complete re-install of Lion and all my apps?

One thought... you said the iPhone displayed your computer's old name? I think that you must have used the iPhone with this computer before you changed the name. So no one else's iPhone should display your full name unless that iPhone had previously connected to your Mac. For example, I did this exact same change, and I use the Keynote Remote app to connect with my MacBook Pro. It would no longer link with my MacBook Pro under the old name, and I found that I had to unlink and then create a new link under the new name. So the answer to your question is, there is nothing you need to do on the Mac, but rather the phone, and no other phone will display your full name.

I'm going to assume that since you deleted your hard drive and all its files, you had a backup, yes? If the backup has an OS (bootable clone), then you can boot into it by holding down the option key when you start up you iMac and choose the backup drive. Then use Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper to copy the files back to your iMac.
