Not your usual "Windows won't recognize my iPod" post . . .

My problem's unique, I fear. My 5G, 80gig iPod works perfectly when off the computer. When I connect it to a USB port (I've tried all of them), nothing happens, although the unit does receive a charge. No plug-and-play sound, no disk drive listed in the drive list, nothing shown in the device drivers list, etc. The wrinkle is that a friend's identical iPod, when connected to my same computer, is recognized just fine in both Windows and iTunes.
So it's clear there's something going on with my iPod, and not with my computer or drivers. Yes I'm using the most up-to-date software and firmware, and I've tried all of Apple's suggested fixes for unrecognized iPods, though like I said, other iPods seem to work fine on my system.
Any advice, short of getting a replacement from Apple?
Thanks very much in advance.

yes, I have this exact same issue. I have a 30gb 5th gen (i think), doing exact same issues as above. To make worse, this first began to happen when I purchased new computer, and some how when trans library, my ipod only downloaded songs that i purchased, but not my library, and it deleted on my ipod, so my ipod only has 30 of the 1,500 songs in my library. I can't believe there is no solution to this, I have been searching all over, including previous threads on this site, I have been through all the fix's, and nothing. This must be an ipod issue, as i have tried it on 6 computers, and the exact same result...the windows message that the usb device is malfunctioning. If anyone has any idea's it would be most helpful.

  • Windows won't recognize 2nd ipod

I have a 5th generation ipod which works perfect with windows and itunes. I purchased a Nano . I charged it up first then pluged it in the usb 2.0 port that I use with my other unit. Windows won't recognize it. I can not find it in My Computer. In the device manager it shows up under other devices with a yellow question mark.
It claims it needs a driver and of course when I try the cd no I get one of those can't install hardware. I am using the latest versions of both software products.
I did the 5 Rs and went through this site and the help documents and nothing works. I took it back to the Apple store and they said it was working perfect.
So... I went home tried again, even disable my antivirus/firewall and no dice. I then tried it on my lap top and it installed and works fine. Where I am right now is copying what I wanted on one computer to CD and then importing the files ( sans song names) .
I am baffled on this one. One unit works fine then the nano won't be recognized on the other. Suggestions?

  • Windows won't recognize my iPod - USB device not recognized

This is really frustrating. So I got a 4gb iPod nano on Saturday, took it home, set it up and everything was going just fine, no worry's. About 4 hours later I went to adjust my songs and it would not come up in iTunes. A little pop-up box said that the "USB device not recognized - one of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it." After owning my iPod for less than an afternoon, I now have an ipod that I can do nothing to including change the music, charge it, etc. It works normally otherwise, it just won't connect to my computer. I then plugged in my older 256mb usb stick, and the same message, it too does not get recognized by windows. So I then tried a brand new 1gb usb stick that I had and the same result, not recognized by windows. I updated my itunes to the latest one after purchasing my ipod (version 7.4.3.1) and have looked up everything that I can and tried everything I saw to try, but nothing, absolutely nothing, worked. However my usb mouse, usb joystick, and usb printer all still work, but my moniter that has four usb outlets on it causes the same message, if I plug in the cable that connects one usb on my computer to the four on my moniter, windows can not recognize it. When I look in my device manager at the "unknown device" under the usb controller list it says that there is not driver for it, however I know that the drivers are either on my computer or built into windows. Any help? Anybody have an idea about what to do? Is it something in my windows registry has changed because of the new itunes, etc.?

Now that I've had some sleep, I realise I didn't really provide information that may lead to some specific help. Here goes - when I first plugged in the ipod nano (8gb), It displayed the screen it was supposed to - I could see the lightning bolt through the battery icon and knew it was charging. The icon for the ipod also appeared in the left-hand listing in itunes (in the section that existed under Library, before the sections Store and Playlists). This section now does not appear (I can't remember the title of this section, but it might have been 'devices'). In fact, I'm pretty sure this problem started when I clicked on this icon - nothing happened and it disappeared - so did the display on the ipod, which is not just the apple. This means itunes has only Library, Store and Playlist in the left-hand colunm. While I accept that computers do not work on normal logic, this seems to me to indicate that the drivers are fine, the system is fine, my laptop is fine - its the ipod or the usb cord. This morning as I tried again, this time my laptop gave me the option to 'click on the balloon to solve the problem' - let me quote: "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognise it. Try reconnecting the device. If Windows still does not recognise it, replace the device". Come on folks - one of you will surely know how to fix this (short of me taking the ipod back to the store to get my money back).

  • Windows won't recognize my ipod

i uninstalled my itunes and my ipod, and i tried to install it again (with the ipod CD). But during the instalation they ask you to plug in the ipod to reformat it.. but when i plug in mine it keeps reformatting and resetting... and after some time it shows some error and i end up unplugging it and clicking the "click on this ckeckbox if you wish to continue without connecting your ipod".
so when everything is installed again the ipod works and windows even recognizes it but it won't wor with itunes.. i don't think it's a poblem with itunes but with the ipod itlself.. help me please!!

  • Windows won't recognize Nano connecting.

My genius friend decided to plug my iPod into his xbox 360, and now windows won't recognize my iPod Nano, and it won't turn on, and I don't know what to do.

Try reading my post "Is your IPOD very slow to connect and eject and it appears to lock-up?". I think it is on page 2 of this discussion forum now.
This worked for me and I've had emails from other people saying that this fixed their problem.

  • New Computer Won't Recognize my IPOD

I have an IPOD mini and just got a new computer. When I plug it in, the computer says "usb device not recognized". When I look it up it says that there is no driver for the device. It still works fine on my old machine (a slower usb 1.1).

You may want to try these steps, Jacob, after you've installed and run the iPod Updater and your computer still won't recognize the iPod:
First, make hidden folders visible. Open My Computer and choose Tools/Folder Options/View tab. Click on 'Show hidden files and folders' and click OK.
In the Add New Hardware Wizard, have it search in C:\windows\inf for usbstor.inf. This file is required for windows to properly configure the driver. If Windows finds the driver there, you're done.
If Windows does not find the proper driver there, copy usbstor.sys from C:\windows\servicepack\i386 to C:\windows\system32\drivers.
If you can't find the usbstor.inf file on your system, you can get it here: usbstor.inf
After copying the usbstor.inf driver file to C:\Windows\inf, right-click on My Computer and choose ‘Manage.'
Click on the button labeled 'Device Manager.'
Click to open the list under 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers.'
Right click on any mass storage devices with the exclamation icon next to them and select 'Update Driver.'
Check the option 'Install from a list or a specific location' and then click to continue.
Check next to 'Include this location in the search' and enter 'C:\windows\inf'.
Click on 'Next' and follow the steps to complete the driver installation wizard.

  • Please Help - My iTunes library won't recognize my iPod classic

My iTunes library won't recognize my iPod classic 80gb. I try doing the trouble shooting steps on apple, but they still did not work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'd love to add some newer music to my old iPod for listening in the car or when travelling. Thanks a lot.

    Hello dmbnewfie,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that your iPod classic is not being recognized in iTunes when you connect it to your computer. I know you have tried some troubleshooting on the Apple website as well, but without knowing which steps you have completed, I would suggest working through the attached iPod classic Troubleshooting Assistant.

  • ITunes won't recognize my iPod all of the sudden

I've got a 40GB iPod that I purchased about 2 years ago. It's about 1/2 full. For some reason iTunes stopped recognizing my iPod when I plug it into the dock. In the past "Jeff's iPod" would show up in the left hand column, I would copy music from CD to the iPod, then update. I can add music to iTunes, charge my iPod in the dock, but iTunes doesn't find my iPod so I can't update it. I've tried to reset the iPod and this doesn't work. I'd rather not start over by restoring the iPod, and I'm not even sure doing that would recognize my iPod. Should I reinstall iTunes? Would this erase all the songs on my iPod when I go to update it? I'm confused, this happened totally out of the blue for no apparent reason.
