Note regarding ATI X1900 XT with Mac Pro, Leopard

To all who are experiencing any of the frequently reported problems with the hardware/software combination listed in the subject heading:
I purchased the ATI X1900 XT as an upgrade fro my Mac Pro in January. I never experienced any issues with the card in OS X Tiger, but several months ago I began to experience overheating issues in Windows XP (Boot Camp) when playing graphics-intensive games. The overheating caused visible graphics corruption/artifacts, graphics system resets and even spontaneous system restarts. The frequency and severity of these symptoms actually increased over time, leading me to believe that the card was either defective or that the overheating was causing degenerative/cumulative damage to the graphics hardware.
I recently upgraded to OS X Leopard, and all **** broke loose. Immediately after upgrading, I began to experience frequent graphics corruption/artifacts (in the form of spurious horizontal lines), system lockups/freezes and spontaneous system restarts. None of these issues were present in Tiger. The system became completely unreliable and essentially unusable.
It was initially a popular belief that Leopard's graphics drivers were somehow buggy or incompatible with the X1900 XT. After my experiences, I don’t believe that’s the case. I think that the issues reported are symptomatic of hardware, not software problems. Leopard is merely a catalyst. Leopard's increased leverage of OpenGL stresses the graphics hardware in ways that Tiger did not, causing an overall increase in graphics hardware temperature. I believe that the glitches/artifacts/system freezes/restarts that I experienced were not due to buggy drivers, but due to the graphics card overheating as a result of the increased load placed on it by Leopard.
I brought my X1900 XT in to my local Apple store today and asked for a replacement. Fortunately, they had one in stock, and they gave me a new card on the spot. The technician was apparently well aware of the issues, and mentioned that they have had a lot of similar problems with new iMacs.
Since installing the new card, I have experienced no graphics corruption, system freezes or spontaneous system restarts, either in OS X Leopard or in Windows XP gaming.
I would urge anyone who is experiencing problems with the X1900 XT (in either Windows or OS X) to have their card replaced by Apple - assuming that their card or system is still under warranty, that is.
I suspect one of two possible scenarios is true:
Theory #1: The Rev 1 X1900 XT is inherently flawed and has problems with overheating, which is exacerbated in OS X by upgrading to Leopard. Due to Leopard's greater leveraging of OpenGL, there is increased thermal stress placed on the card relative to Tiger. The overheating is evident in Leopard as graphics corruption/artifacts, system lockups/freezes and spontaneous restarts. The Rev 2 X1900 XT has (theoretically) corrected the problems inherent in Rev 1.
Theory #2. The thermal management system of the X1900 XT (all revisions) is inherently flawed. The card will slowly cook itself over time, and the effects are degenerative and cumulative. As the age of the card increases, so will the occurrence of graphics corruption, system freezes and spontaneous system restarts, especially when playing graphics-intensive games or running OS X Leopard.
I sincerely hope that Theory #1 is the case. I’ll be watching my system closely as I continue to use the new card, and hopefully there will be no further problems with overheating.
If theory #2 turns out to be true, then Apple has a huge PR nightmare on its hands, as each X1900 XT for the Mac is essentially a ticking time bomb that will self-destruct within months of purchase.
The funny thing is, this isn’t the first time I’ve had graphics card trouble with one of Apple’s “professional” towers. I bought a G5 several years ago when they were first released. I had problems with the stock nVidia graphics card in the form of what came to be known as the dreaded “black screen of death.” This became a commonly reported issue, experienced by many owners of the G5 in its first revision. Apple replaced my card and the problem never reoccurred. I’m hoping that I’ll be as lucky this time around.
I think it’s apparent that Apple’s batting average with graphics cards isn’t exactly stellar. It’s curious, considering that Apple offers a very limited selection of graphics options for their towers. One would think that by Apple only offering 3 graphics options, they would be able to have fairly tight control over the quality of the hardware, and plenty of time and resources to devote to testing. Unfortunately, I’ve had more graphics hardware-related problems on my Macs than any PCs I’ve ever used. That’s embarrassing, and Apple needs to do much better than this.

I replaced my G5 Quad with a Mac Pro 8-core. The Mac Pro's thermal design is far superior to the G5's. The G5 Quad's liquid cooling system has a much bigger task (IBM doesn't publish the thermal dissipation numbers on their PPCs but I suspect they are high) than the more efficient Intel Xeons. The G5 liquid cooling units are troublesome and the issue is something I think Apple is quietly solving by replacing failed liquid cooled G5's (that are still under warranty) with Mac Pros (a very smart PR move). My primary concern when I switched to a Mac Pro was issues with the X1900 XT graphics card failure rates posted on the web and in these discussions. The very latest generation of the X1900 XT (July 2007) are reported to be more reliable. Many G5 owners are still reporting failed cards. Given the much higher thermal environment and the remarks in this thread, I can now see why. The interior of a G5, especially Quad, gets too hot for this ATi card. I had the nVidia GeForce 7800 GT in my Quad. That was a very good card. Still, the issues with the ATi x1900 XT may indeed be a thermal design issue that AMD may need to either address directly, or turn to a 3rd party solution.
I installed a 3rd party cooling alternative, Arctic Cooling's Accelero S1. It's a passive system that replaces that hairdryer fan with a large heat sink. The package includes upgraded heat sinks for the power regulator (much beefier than the stock), and for each memory chip. The heat sink is a large conductive cooling assembly that uses 4 heat pipes. The vendor claims that using this system increases the case temperature by 1°C, which is easily handled by the system cooling system. So far, their claim appears to be valid. Since there's no longer a fan, you can imagine how quiet the system has become. The only installation hitch is that the black support clips were made for the PC version and the Mac Version adds a beefy support rail on the spine of the card. The workaround is to trim off the lower tang of the clips so they just rest against the support rail.
After reading this, I'm tempted to add the "Turbo" option, a couple of high volume low speed fans that fit on the radiator. I'm trying to "stress" the system by running SETI@Home 24/7 while doing all the other work to see how hot and how loud I can get this system. So far, no disappointments. This is the quietest workstation I've ever worked on. Even when "hot", the fans are not loud. The passive cooling system seems to work very well. I left Star Wars-Empire At War up and running in the menu for hours one day and it didn't seem to suffer from any ill effects. I have owned this system for just over a month. I will add more thermal load after I crank the system memory up to 24 or 32 GB. If there are any real cooling issues, I will find out about them next summer. I really dread the prospect of plunking down another $2k for the nVidia 4500 FX (I really don't need the 3D audio support) to get comparable video support.

  • Airport Extreme base station no longer playing nice with Mac Pro

    This is a strange problem...
I have an Airport Extreme base station (purchased in 2004) that I use with verizon DSL to get a wireless network going in my house, and I connect three computers wirelessly.
I have an ipod touch and toshiba PC laptop that are both able to connect to the network and run just fine. But lately (past 2 weeks or so) when I try to connect with my MacPro desktop I can go to a few sites, but after a few minutes the airport locks up. At that point none of my computers will connect and I have to unplug and then replug the airport. At that point the network will start up again and if I do not try to get on with Mac Pro then things run fine, but when I try to connect with desktop again, after another few minutes the same thing happens.
I know the problem is with the airport and my Mac Pro - I have done numerous connection experiments and have narrowed the problem down to that.
Is it possible that my MacPro might be drawing more power and causing the airport to overheat? (it is rather hot in the room with DSL connection)
Or should I accept that the current base it old, and bite the bullet and get a new base?
    Any thoughts?

Could you post what you did in order to resolve the issue. I'm having a problem with the base station in that I cannot connect to the internet with my laptops (a mac and pc) while I can connect wirelessly to my network with my desktop (G4). The base station is not detected in the base statin admin utility or the aiport setup utility. If anyone else has a solution I would be much obliged to read it.
    Thanks!

  • Replacing nvidia with ati in first gen mac pro

posted this in the using osx forum but realized this might be a better
    place for this issue.
i'm debugging a problem system, a first gen mac pro, that has a 7300gt
in it. i also have a second gen mac pro that has no problems. i've
made many changes to the problem system and am coming down to my last
couple of options, one of which is swapping graphics cards. the problem
system is running an nvidia card, the problem-free box is running an ati
card. maybe a driver conflict in the nvidia driver?
the issue is that, on boot, my external sata box hangs when recognizing
the box's four channels. this does not happen on the second gen mac pro.
i'm down to the last three things:
    graphics chipset differences
logic board differences between first, second gen
    osx 10.4 vs osx 10.5
i'm now testing the graphics card as a possible solution. i've gotten
conflicting reports as to what graphics cards might work with a first
gen mac pro still running 10.4.11.
a tech told me that the 2600xt i have in my second gen will not work
in the first gen. on the other hand, someone here said they were using
one. will the 10.4.11 system have any necessary drivers for this card?
also, the 3870 has been recommended. i've also thought about the 4870.
i've also seen a lot of discussion about driver problems (that they're
unavailable) with regard to the 4870, that the drivers would be included
in a 10.5.7 update. if these drivers won't be available until 10.5.7,
it would seem i should stay away from the 4870 for now. but what about
the 3870? will my 10.4.11 system be able to use this card?
    any info much appreciated,
    BabaG

    Trial and error, creative troubleshooting.
Take that one 4-drive RAID across two channels. What happens if all four are on the same channel? what if the firmware - there is firmware for the case, right?
    Does Norco offer replacement PSUs?
Convert the Apple RAID to SoftRAID (I'd do that regardless anyway).
    http://www.softraid.com
AND, their support people have helped me with multiple problems, even to help pin-point the er, "culprit" even when it was controller or drive (one vendor blamed Maxtor Atlas drive, then blamed Apple, we came out though showing it was their firmware on their controller card, and a new firmware was released 3 months later - it took me and SoftRAID weeks to nail it.
Some drives have delayed or staggered spinup, some do not. And some are optimized for RAID. You don't want to use drives that are not. And you want to test each drive before it is put into production (I would give a drive a week of testing before using any drive today).
Remember where SCSI controllers would also list what drives that they had certified for use with, and were known to work with? or which were not? You don't see that as much, but some do.
AMUG mentioned using the DS1220 with Sonnet Tempo E4P I think. Sonnet has their own line of rack mount storage. Get them in on the discussion. Try their controller after asking (Niel) what he thinks and knows about Norco.
You don't mention what you use or have done, but swapping out controllers, and having a spare or backup is often helpful. Even a "given."
Put a good watt meter (if it logs all the better) to see what kind of current draw or peak inrush your setup exhibit. Put the Mac and the storage rack on separate UPS, either APC SMART or RS800VA, and line conditioner (ZeroSurge).
12 x 25W and I'd probably want as large a PSU and high efficiency unit.

  • USB superdrive not working with Mac Pro

Is there a trick to getting a USB Superdrive working with a Macpro?
The drive in the Macpro no longer ejects and have tried connecting the USB drive to both the front and back ports - does it not work with Mac Pros?
Any pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated.

I had a problem my superdrive. It would play dvd's and cd's that were already burnt but would not burn blank DVDs or CDs- in the recent past it had no problems burning. In addition, the Finder would not display the superdrive. When I put a blank disc in it would go to Disk Utilities and would not allow burning. With help from Apple I discovered the problem-- The settings in CDS & DVDs had been changed from When you insert a blank DVD/CD "Ask what to do to  to  "GO to Disk Utilities". If this sounds like your problem try changing the settings to this:
Try going to; System Preferences/ CDs & DVDs
Change these two settings to this:
When you insert a blank CD: Ask what to do
When you insert a blank DVD: Ask what to do
NOTE: If they are already set to this you probably have a different problem. If they are set to Go to Disk Utilitiy this is probably a solution.
    And
    Then go to Finder Preferences
Make sure that under "Show these items on desktop:" that the checkbox for CDs, DVDs, and iPods is checked.
Try to burn the DVD again (reload Disc- perhaps restart) and try again.
Don't know how these setting changed but they did. It worked for me.

  • Mac Pro/ Leopard/ Boot Camp/ XP and 2 ATI Radeon XT1900 ????

I recently went surfaced from a hardware nightmare with my Mac Pro. I need 4 monitors on the XP pro/ boot camp side and was unble to do so using an added ATI XT1900 to my Mac Pro. The drivers would not successfully load. Also the added card buggered the original card. After uninstall and some trouble shooting I was able to get back to a functional configuration with 1 card.
Now that Leopard is out with the new boot camp.... does anyone have experience (successful) with 2 video cards (ATI radeon xt1900) in boot camp/ XP pro??? I dont want to go through me last experience as my job depends on the XP/ boot camp working.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Dan

Correct me if i'm wrong, but the original poster didn't ask or mention anything about Crossfire. (though as a side note, I have read that some people have sucessfully got their 7300gt's into SLI by purchasing a special dongle and downloading a hacked driver.)
And as to whether a user would need two or more monitors for their needs is completely up to the them if it fits their needs, the way i see it the term 'waste' is subjective depending on the user and his/her needs.

  • IPhone 3G is not recognized by iTunes installed on MAC PRO

I have attempted to connect iTunes after Mac Pro system restore with iPhone 3G, but iTunes does not recognize any connection from iPhone. When I plug iPhone into my MacBook Pro iTunes immediately recognizes iPhone and begins sync process. I restored iPhone software while on MacBook Pro, but did not sync MacBook Pro iTunes. With factory settings restored, I attempted to sync iPhone with Mac Pro iTunes and again iPhone was not recognized by iTunes iPhone connected via USB. Any suggestions?

  • EPSON STYLUS PHOTO 780 with Mac Pro

Epson's latest driver does not seem to install on a Mac Pro w/ OS 10.4.8 and I am forced to use Gimp Print drivers. What settings do I use in this driver to make sure that printer color management on the Epson Stylus Photo 780 is disabled when creating a printer profile?
Is there a way to see the ink levels and clean the print nozzles with the Gimp Print drivers?

We are actually talking about the same thing: free
open source printer drivers from Sourceforge.
OK. That clears things up a bit. The version that came with the
Mac PRo is still called Gimp-Print but has a version of 5.0 something beta 2
    so it's a bit confusing.
Gutenprint 5.0.0 is the first stable release of 5.0.
Gutenprint is the new name for Gimp-Print as of the
    5.0 release.
OK. It looks like perhaps the Mac Pro shipped with a beta version, 5.0 beta 2,
so I'll try installing the 5.0.0 version.
    This release represents the
    state-of-the-art in current Gimp-Print development.
    ...snip>
(No, I didn't write that! You can read all about it,
    and download, from here):
    http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3
I recognize it. I've been reading the documentation. It looks like it might even do a better job than the Epson driver but I still have to figure out how to go about using a custom printer profile with it. My Mac Pro is at home so I'll have to wait to install and try it. I also have to try and fix my wife's broken PC first- she just won't learn.
When you say 'the driver' did you mean Epson's driver
The Epson driver doesn't seem to want to decompress properly with S. Expander on the Mac PRo. I tried downloading it several times.
or the Gutenprint that you have? Not that it really
matters - the Gutenprint downloads as a disk image
    which contains the installer.
The one you downloaded (whichever it was) was in .sea
    (self-expanding archive) .hqx (hexadecimal), which
your Mac should be able to open using Stuffit
Expander. If you don't have that it's a free
download. That download format is a bit old hat and
IMO reveals the age of the driver.
Yes. But it's an old printer too and Epson has moved on.
I like the printer though(well, more or less if I can keep
the nozzles unclogged) and it still does a good job.
    And the price is right.
The 'Ink/print head' button I mentioned is part of
the printer window you get with the Gutenprint
    printer.
Try it and see what you think!
I will, just as soon as I deal with that stupid Win box.
    thanks for your help.

  • Mix real 5.1 on the timeline with MAC PRO to optical ?

    hello
Can you give me the list of available devices or even a single ring road compatible with MAC PRO Audition or Premiere that allows me a mix 5.1 on the timeline
I have DD encoder Minnetonka Audio SurCode for adobe but is no possible to mix on the timeline direct
In a MAC PRO only 2.0 on the optical output with Audition and Premiere
there are only two audio channels recognized in the application
On Windows this is the same problem, but fortunately
Sony Vegas by the optical output allows 5.1 and above possible mix on the timeline.
You have a solution with mac pro

    yet
Mix with a 5.1 reading is 2.0 on the optical output with a mapping of only 2 channels for MAC OSX
nothing ever sound on rear speakers ....
Mix with a reading of 5.1 to 5.1 optical output BUT with a 2-channel mapping only for Windows7 .....
Nothing ever sound on rear speakers it is not possible to make a map of more than two channels with optical output
Against by the HDMI output there is a exit with a 7.1 channel mapping works on Windows7
I must find an HDMI sound card for the equivalent on my mac

You don't. Since you have an Intel Mac, buy a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD from the online Apple Store.

Holding down the control key will invoke "right-click."
Depending on the View, holding down Shift will with either toggle the selection (Icon View), or it will make a continuous selection from the previous selection (List View or Column View).
The only way to make a continuous selection in Icon View is to drag out a selection marquee around or through the icons.
I can't remember the behavior of previous OS's.
