Notebooks losing contact with printers

I babysit a small group of Macs in my office's otherwise Windows work network.
Two are Mac Pro (each Intel, quad 2.66). These are occasionally moved around and are connected to our network wirelessly with no problems.
The two printers these Mac Pros use are a network based HP 8150 and a Canon i9900 attached to & shared by one of the Mac Pros. Again, no problems.
Here is my issue:
I have 3 new MacBook Pros that I am setting up. All are set up just as the desktop machines and work fine on the network with exception of the printing. I go through the normal Printer Setup Utility stuff to add the appropriate printers and set defaults. When I shut down and restart, I need to wait a very long time for the printers to appear in my Printer Setup Utility list, sometimes they don't show at all, and sometimes they come & go. It seems that sometimes they see the printers on the network and sometimes they don't. The Mac Pros do not have this problem - printers are chosen and are always visible and available - and are accessing the same network the same way (wirelessly).
I suspect something amiss in my settings on the notebooks but I can't find it. Any ideas??
Thanks!

When you shut down and restart multiple computers, they may get different IP addresses, which usually means re-Adding the printer. Does this sound familiar?

  • Time machine has losing contact with my external drive, connected via a USB port.

Recently my Time Machine program has begun losing contact with my external drive, connected via a USB port. When I attempt to open Time Machine, it indicates there is no external hard drive.  When I click on "setting up time machine" it opens airport utility.   I've tried rebooting, run disk utility repairs for both hard discs, pulled and reconnected the USB cable, even completely shut down the system.    Eventually the two re-establish contact, but I'm not certain what I've done that causes this.  The lost contact appears to happen during the weekends.  The external hard drive is a MJaxtor OneTouch 4. What should I be doing to solve this problem once and for all?

I use a little app named EasyFind - free at the App Store. It will allow you to search individual volumes or all volumes.
Download it and see if it will help.

  • Clients losing contact with server

    General network:
We have a 10.6.2 server which provides DNS, AFP, IChat, Open Directory and Print to our internal network 10.6.2 clients which are bound to the OD by the server's IP address. FQDN of the server resolves both forwards and reverse on the server and the clients.
Clients were migrated recently to 10.6.2 by upgrading them in place from 10.5.8. The server was upgraded in place. The OD was then Archived and Restored to a fresh install of 10.6.2.
None of the following happened when the clients and server were 10.5.x.
    Strange problem:
Since moving to 10.6.2, users which are logged in for a long time (3 hours or more) have most of the services periodically fail due to an apparent inability to resolve the FQDN of the server.
When this happens, I have been able to get Network Utility on the confused client to resolve the server both ways. But then immediately thereafter the client will tell me that it cannot find the location of "FQDN of server" when trying to connect via AFP. Printer service disappears with the same type of problem. Our clients get printers by browsepolling the server by its IP address in CUPS. The print jobs fail when requesting for example : officeprinter@FQDNofServer. User Sync fails due to inability to resolve the server.
All of this usually goes away by logging out the user and logging back in again. Sometimes Shutting down and rebooting is required.
I'm assuming that the problem is in DNS but cannot find anything about the inability of the services to resolve either on the client or the server. I may be looking in the wrong place.
    Thanks - Erich

I was also just having this same problem; even though my local DNS was listed first, the ISP DNS servers were being queried. This was never a problem when I was running Microsoft's DNS server.
I was always under the impression that the first DNS server in any computer's list was queried first, and then the other ones if there was no record. Why is that not the case after switching to Apple's DNS server? All the computers now seem to be querying whatever the heck DNS server they feel like, instead of going in order they are listed... Is this a known bug that I'm not aware of?
I fixed it by following the advice in this forum, but at the cost of a crucial piece of functionality: If I ever restart the local DNS server for any reason, or if it goes down, my whole organization will not be able able to browse the internet. Having the ISP DNS numbers in there let me allow for that possibility, but not anymore.

  • Why an I losing contact with Firewire drives and camera back?

One of my computers suddenly won't connect to a Phase One digital back via firewire.
Tried to plug in a external drive to check the port. No contact. (Tried various cables, etc.)
Tried camera on another computer. No contact. Tried firewire drives that had been running before on this same computer, and now it won't read these drives.
My PhaseOne dealer assures me that a digital back can't possible fry or disable a port. Still. there they are.
Took one of these drives to yet another computer that connects fine with yet another drive, tried the problem drive, and there was no connection. When I checked About This Mac there was a spinning wheel, as though it were looking for something.
Any thoughts, anyone? I don't want to test more drives if they are being damaged. And if they are, can they be recovered?
    Many thanks
    Sean Kernan

    Hi, John.
    1. I presume in Finder Preferences, in the General tab, you've selected "CDs, DVDs, and iPods" under "Show on desktop." Otherwise, FireWire drives won't display on the desktop, but they should still appear in the Finder's Sidebar.
    2. If you did not Eject the drive before you disconnected it or powered it off, its partition map may be corrupted. That could explain the symptoms you are seeing. Your FireWire-based digital camera back may be seen as a FireWire drive.
Disconnecting a removable storage device — FireWire drive, USB drive, etc. — without first ejecting it can result in the drive's partition map being corrupted. Before disconnecting such a device, one must first Eject it by either:
    - Dragging its icon to the Trash.
    - Control-clicking the drive's icon and selecting Eject from its contextual menu.
    - In Disk Utility, selecting the device, then selecting Eject in the Disk Utility toolbar.
If there's data on the drive you wish to recover, see my "Data Recovery" FAQ. Once you recover the data you want to save, if any, you will need to repartition and reformat the drive.
    3. Before you panic w.r.t. item 2 above, Here is some general troubleshooting advice w.r.t. FireWire devices that may help:(1) Review the AppleCare Knowledge Base document "What to do if your computer won't recognize a FireWire device".
    (2) If this problem occurred after installing a recent Mac OS X Update, and you are also unable to mount CDs, DVDs, or disk images perform the steps in this Mac OS X Hints article.
    (3) The following additional steps will often help resolve problems with FireWire devices, particularly hard drives:(a) Power-on the FireWire drive before starting up (booting) your Mac.
    (b) Reset PRAM and NVRAM.
    (c) Reset the PMU or SMU: Select the appropriate knowledge base item for your model of Mac from this KB search. Follow the instructions on resetting the PMU or SMU carefully!
    (d) Try a different FireWire port. James Wiebe, CEO of WiebeTech, has published FireWire Port Failures in Host Computers and Peripheral Devices, a white paper providing backgroud information and technical analysis concerning the causes of failure for FireWire ports. This may provide additional diagnostic information.
    (e) Check with the manufacturer of your FireWire drive or enclosure to see if any firware updates are available for such.(4) Hopefully, the partition map on the FireWire drive is not damaged. If it still refuses to mount, you may need to employ data recovery tools or services: see my "Data Recovery" FAQ.Note that some of the information above is from the "FireWire Problems" chapter of my book, Troubleshooting Mac® OS X.
PS: You've not provided any info about the computer in question, i.e. Mac model, installed RAM, installed version of Mac OS X, etc. That's always important to include in a post, and I suggest you add it to your profile: click "My Settings" in the upper-right section of the sidebar on the right side of this page.

  • Logic losing contact with MOTU 828 (Mk I)

Ever since installing Logic 7.1, Once or twice a session, Logic stops talking to my Motu 828 (Mk I). I'll be playing something back, or getting ready to record, and the Motu just goes quiet - no signal indicators. If I restart the Motu, the sound comes back, so not the biggest problem in the world, but sure is annoying. I've gotten rid of, then re-installed the Motu drivers, and that doesn't seem to help.
There have been a few posts about new 828s dropping out, but nothing as intermittent as this. Any ideas?
    Dual 1.25 G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Logic 7.1 MOTU 828 Mk I

I had this problem with my Motu 828 (mk I) and my previous Imac G4 (700 mhz). Sometimes it could dropout 3-4 times during a session, sometimes it did not happen for several weeks. Buying a new firewirecable instead of the one Motu supplied made the problem be less frequent.
I came to the conclusion that it was probably a defect firewireconnection on my Imac G4.
Since I bought my new Imac G5 in november the dropouts has disappered.
Suggestion: test your 828 with another mac to see if the problems go away.

  • Win 7 sp1 workstations losing contact with ZEN-servers

Lately we have seen more and more of this phenomenon that seems to have been described earlier but I cannot find any clear solution anywhere.
ZAA is 11.2.3.24691 MU1 or 11.2.4.3271. Happens to ws that are known to have been working ok. ZAA properties goes almost blank, except Agent status show correct IP-address, Device state Managed. Configuration location says Default location, should be something else. Server properties Unavailable, Closest servers no available, no policies, no bundles.
zac ref "completes" in half a second but nothing happens. If device still has the IP-address that was known to ZEN it shows up green, otherwise "Unable to connect...".
Wireshark shows little communication with ZEN-servers and only when ws uses same IP-address as is known to ZEN. A refresh produces no communication.

I sort of have the impression that ZAA actually is working (the services are running) but something else blocks the connection. However, Windows fw is closed and no av software is present.
Uninstall - reinstall of ZAA normally solves the problem, but this is not very practical and the situation can appear anytime on basically any ws, after which the ws remains in this state. The situation is particularly annoying on desktops with DLU, where the ws is practically useless in this state.

We seen this also on some workstation, zac cc, zac ref and then a restart usually solved it. Have not seen this error anymore after we updated to 11.2.4MU1.

  • Keep losing contact with iTunes

I have a 160 gb Apple TV synced with a mini with a 500 gb external drive. I have two issues.
    1) Every-time that Watch a video on the mini, the ATV loses its sync with the mini and no longer shows up in the mini's iTunes. I have to close iTunes, reopen and then resync with the mini on the ATV. Very annoying....
    2) How can I tell what files are held on the ATV and which one should just be available to stream? iTunes 7.6 does not allow access to anything but the photos. And this does not even put them onto the ATV.

I have installed the wifi update but the capsule is connected thru ethernet and not thru wifi.
So that should'nt make any diffrent.
When I was using snowleopard the the capsule and my server connected automatic to the Imac after I started the Mac,since lion they don't.
When I find them on the list in the finder I can open them and then they are connected, but mostly they are not even in the finder list and then I have to restart them and configure them again I am a litlle sick of it.

  • TS1741 Does anyone have trouble with the Remote app losing contact with the iTunes library after it has been connected and working fine for a while. If I go to the computer and turn off sharing, then turn it back on, it will relocate the library again.

My iTunes remote app on my ipad mini will work fine for a while and then it will lose the library. I then have to turn off sharing on the computer and then turn it back on. This will work for a while and then I will have to repeat the process. Help!

I have just found the problem to be windows firewall on my library PC
I can only presume there has been an update to windows firewall or iTunes
all the relevant programs were on the allowed list
I'm now currently running with firewall turned off on my library PC.
I'll update when i have found the rogue setting.

  • OS X Mavericks Mail losing contact with outgoing mail server after waking from sleep.

I upgraded my MAcBook Air to OS X Mavericks two days ago. Since then I have had intermittent problems connecting to my outgoing mail server. I get the "Unable to Receive Mail" error message. When I click "Take All Accounts Online," I get an additonal error message stating that connection to the host on the specifided port failed. I am using a different outgoing server for mail and I can continue to send emails.
Putting the computer to sleep seems to trigger the problem. Sometimes restaring the computer resloves the problem, sometimes it does not. Any help would be greatly appriciated as this problems his disrupted my workflow significantly.

Fixed. In case anyone has the same issue, I went to Internet Accounts, unclicked mail, and then re-clicked it. It worked. Disabling it in the mail configuration did not work, but it did in Internet Accounts.

  • Thumbnails lost contact with originals in iPhoto '09 (8.1.2.) – can't view fullscreen or edit!

Over the past days my headache over the iPhoto '09 library has gone from bad to worse.
Starting with a few albums and events from last year, iPhoto has stopped displaying some photos (mainly landscape-oriented photos, upright photos seem to be working fine most of them) in fullscreen, edit mode and slideshows.
Browsing through the apple community I've realized that this issue may be due to thumbnails losing contact with original photos. Indeed, I can't seem to export photos to desktop or any other location. "Show original file" or "show file" only opens an empty Finder window, doesn't connect with the Picture folder or anything.
I've also tried entering the Library manually from another working photo, and can't seem to locate a number of pics. It seems the originals are simply lost.
Some of the missing pictures are irreplacable (like my son's birth!).
I'd be INCREDIBLY THANKFUL for any advice on how to save these photos.
    Cheers/ AB

The simple and surefire solution is to restore from back up.
If files are missing then that's the only solution.
    To rebuild the Library:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

IS ANYONE HAVE TROUBLE WITH IPHONE 4S LOSING CONTACTS?

I've figured it out. You must have added the mail account after that your contacts are not appearing. Goto contacts settings choose the default account 'iCloud'. If u wanna see your missing contacts then goto contacts then press 'groups' tab at the top left corner the select all groups. Your missing contacts re actually saved in one of email account you have added. In order to bring them to icloud you have to add them again after selecting icloud as default contacts account. I hope this would have solve your problem.

  • How long does corrosion take to appear from contact with liquid?

I have had problems with o2 about my iphone since december 2010! i got a refubished iphone from o2 in october but by december i started having troubles charging it so sent it back to them for a fix. I was contacted by them saying i would have to pay £129 for my phone to be repaired as it was corroeded in the docking area? i had this iphone from about the 16th oct 2010 until the 3rd dec 2010 would corrosion have become apparent in this time (just over a month!) i had the iphone? I know that while i have had the iphone it has never ever been in contact with any liquids.
Be very greatful for any help or advice as i feel like im fighting a losing battle here!

You can try this, don't think there are any Radio Shacks in Europe, but someplace should sell the same thing.
Radio Shack Precision Electronics Cleaner, contains Isohexane, Difluoroethane & Ethanol.  This type of cleaner eliminates any corrosion, evaporates, and provides a layer of protection. Good luck.

  • How can I get itunes to sync my iPhone contacts with outlook?

Contacts doesn't appear among videos, music and tv shows under device and when I request sync, itunes doesn't sync my contacts or internet preferences from my notebook.

Syncing contacts direct with a supported address book app on your computer via the iTunes sync process is selected under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes.
    Outlook 2003, 2007, or 2010 is supported.

  • Water spilled on the table and it had contact with a macbook air:(

    Hi people!
I was at Starbucks and I spilled 1/3 glass of water on a table and it had a little contact with someone's macbook air... The person tried to turn it on  but it did not turn on... He said its ok and i gave him my phone number but im really concerned about it. Do you think that there might be a serious problem? I dont want him to lose his documents...
In the worst case, i ll of course pay the fees for reparing it but... I feel so bad about it...

    someone's macbook air
    Oh, someone elses macbook eh?
Yes, everyone tries to turn it on,.... always a horrible idea.     Electricity and water destroys.
Liquid spills, why your MacBook chassis is a one-way valve for spills
After a substantial spill many people will turn their notebook upside down and shake it, not only does this not work, but it spreads liquid havoc throughout your machine and makes things often as bad as possible.
The keyboard itself acts like a one way valve in the case of a substantial liquid spill. While liquid pours into the bottom chassis easy, it does not come out easily at all, and in the case of any spill, most of it will not come out by turning it upside down. Disconnect all power and contact Apple for diagnostics and repair.
Do not attempt to, after a spill, ‘dry out your MacBook’ and test it
After a spill most people invariably try to “dry out” their notebook by various methods, including hair dryers and otherwise. This both does not work, and after a substantial spill of any magnitude, even if the liquid was water, residue is left behind.
There are additionally many very tight places inside your notebook where liquids will linger for a very long time, and cause corrosion or worse.
Immediately unplug your notebook and contact Apple for in shop diagnostics and parts replacement.
In the case of very minor spills people will “dry out” their notebook and feel success that their notebook is working ok, however invariably in nearly all instances after 4-14 days an error / fault pops up and is usually followed by more.
In case of a spill, damage estimates are impossible,.....anything can be fixed, without question.......the question is cost.
contact Apple for in shop diagnostics and cost estimation ....possible parts replacement.
