Notepad replacement on the iMac
I'm a new iMac user. So far so good. In PC land I could use notepad for quick notes and things. Very simple. And it had a feature that I really liked.
I could press F5 and insert the date and time.
Is there any such replacement for editing TEXT files on the Mac that would also have that feature? It needs to be light weight and fast to load if possible.

You would actually add those scripts to the system. Then, you could access them from any program.
At least that would seem to be the best method.
Many scripts can be used system-wide. And, then if you like, you could probably write a script that would perform the whole operation for you.
Perhaps assign a hot-key to a script that would use the first script to copy the time and date and then paste it.
With scripts, the flexibility is endless.
Another option is Automator. This one plugs-into your various apps and functions directly. You can fully customize your own functions with minimal time and a very low learning curve.

Once you understand how the program works, you'll find it capable of building pre-programmed tasks for everything from file operations, to Safari, to e-mail, iPhoto, and so on.

Will a hard reboot reset the IMAC after a potential power incident
I have had a lighting incident and 2 items on the surge protector did not repower up. One is the cable modem which had to be replaced. The IMAC will not start up. Is there a way to reset the IMAC so that it powers up?
I concur with Rudegar. If you took enough of a lightning strike to permanently knock out the cable mondem, it was probably enough to permently knock out the iMac also.

I have an older iMac 5,1 and the disc drive no longer works. I was hoping that I could the Apple USB super drive as a replacement, but the info on the super drive page says compatible with iMac 2012 or later. Does anyone know why it would not work for me?
A reply to similar question (Q & As , in product page Apple Store) says:
"...dissable the internal reader hardware from devices setup. Then plug the external usb superdrive and that's it." Answered by Enrique T from Lima Oct 25 2013.
If you can locate an external Apple USB 'Air" superdrive for earlier model MacBook Air, that should work. The newer one for the Air is the same as for iMac, now.
You may be able to use other brands of external USB optical drive with your older intel-based iMac, as some of them function capably. A few should also be able to see system discs or other bootable utilities on DVD.

After having had my iMac's hard drive replaced (had a defect 1 TB Seagate) and the 10.8.2 reinstalled, I no longer can make security backups from my iPhone 4S. iTunes simply tells me that the backup cannot be saved on my computer (which it has done numerous times prior the replacement of the hard drive). Any suggestions on how to fix this?
Click the green jelly button at top left of iTunes window to resize the screen to fit.

I purchased the multi-user iworks (yes back when it was new, 2009 or 2010 and recently had to replace my white imac's hard drive (but didn't pay to fix the CD drive). My iworks does not have a serial number on the box and now that my CD drive isn't working how can I reinstall this software?
Buy or borrow an external USB optical drive.
See the confirmation email or covering letter to obtain the serial number. If you have lost it, contact the supplier. -

Hi, i have searched for ways in how to use your old iMac G4 monitor as an external monitor with no success, so an idea occurred to me, what if i find an LCD monitor that would fit in the casing of the iMac G4?
I know is possible, and that the only hard part would be running the cables down through the arm, but i think i can figure that out, so the question now is which LCD screen/monitor will fit on the iMac G4 casing?When you replace the original LCD panel in the iMac G4 with a
complete display (not just the panel with inverter, etc inside) the
combined weight of the new or different display may offset the
designed balance the chrome arm's internal springs & dampener
were intended to compensate for, with the original panel.
This may (or not) be a problem. You may have to find the take-
apart images of the chrome arm - posted in another link here,
and see if there is a way to modify the friction dampeners. Or
use a chrome arm from a 20" iMac G4 since it holds a heavier
LCD than the 17" arm was intended to support.
Hopefully some liquid crystal panel display that fits the 17"
display frame won't weigh much more. Or, perhaps some
of the components could be moved into the base of an
otherwise defective iMac G4 if the machine is gutted and
used only for a display support platform.
Sharing a display to expand the desktop of one to the other
can be done, with two healthy Mac computers. Either in a
third-party software or in a display option in Leopard.

My iTunes library has been replaced with my husband's iTunes library on our iMac. How do I get my iTunes library from my iPhone back onto my iTunes library on the iMac? Help!!!
Well, this is a problem, because the only material you can transfer from your iPhone (using only Apple software) is material you purchased in the iTunes Store.
To do that, plug your iPhone into iTunes, then choose File > Devices > Transfer Purchases from iTunes' menu.
Generally speaking, you should restore your iTunes library from your computer's backup. -
My computer is part of the iMac 1TB Seagate Hard Drive replacement program. What is the best external modem to use in order to back up my files prior to me dropping off my computer.
As Babowa says, get an external disk. You should have one for normal backups anyway.
Actually, I'm a strong fan of having multiple backups. 3 copies including the original, 2 different backup formats, and 1 backup off-site.
And when you have your iMac in for service, if you have just 1 backup at that point in time you have just 1 copy of your data. I get paranoid about my data.
But if you are just making 1 backup, I would use SuperDuper (free for a full clone, and extremely good software, as is Carbon Copy Cloner, but it is not free anymore).
And then I would "Boot" from the clone, to make sure it was a good clone.
Booted from the clone, I would then use Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility to zero the original disk, as suggested by Babowa, so that when they replace the disk, the original disk containing your data is not in the hands of strangers. A single pass of zeros is more than good enough as an erase, as the chances are no one is going to spend the money needed to try and read the erased data. It is not like you have any super secret data, just stuff you do not want the casual data theif to get. You will find the zeroing options under Disk Utility -> Erase -> Security Options
Just make sure you actually boot from your clone before erasing your original. And if you are paranoid like me, make 2 backups, then erase the original :-) -
My MacBook Pro Core Duo from 2006 shuts down randomly requiring frequent reboots to the point I had to abandon doing any project or anything on this MacBook Pro. Same thing occurs with the iMac dual core from 2007. MacBook battery replaced. Is it internal battery for both, new logic board required, bad hard drive, or bad RAM?
Help.Run an Apple Hardware Test using the original installation disk that has the AHT instructions on it.

If I replace my desktop iMac with a laptop, can I still use the desktop as a screen on occasion?
I'm planning to replace my existing iMac and old MacBook with a new Macbook pro. This would be my first time without a dedicated desktop computer. I was wondering if it would be possible to easily hook up my laptop to the old iMac and use it as a larger monitor for those times I want the big screen.

If you have a Late 2009 or Mid 2010 iMac, buy a Mini DisplayPort cable to connect your MacBook Pro to the iMac, and press Command and F2 keys on the iMac. If you have a Mid 2011 or Late 2012 iMac, buy a Thunderbolt cable.
If you have an iMac which isn't compatible, use an application like ScreenRecycler, which allows you to use your iMac as an external display -

Welcome to the Apple Community.
Navigate to Settings > Computers > Your Library on the Apple TV, you may be told you will lose all synced content, but you can't doing anything abouty this, you won't lose any purchased content that has yet to be transferred. Then select Settings > Computers > Connect To iTunes, note the passcode that appears on screen, click on the device in iTunes and enter the passcode when prompted.
