Notes in Mail not saving, new notes can't be created

Ok, so for awhile I was using the Notes feature in Mail (10.5; all fully updated) to get off of Stickies which are apparently bad (and non-Syncable)... All was well until I realized that changes to Notes weren't being saved and when I create a new Note, hit Done, it doesn't save. I'm trying to save these to my .Mac account, so it should be a space or perms issue.
Thoughts?

I click the Note button, nothing happens. The feature is completely out of service. I don't understand. Am I missing something obvious? I have tried the keystrokes too, no reaction at all, no errors, just can't use Notes, at all! rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Please help.
Update: I opened Console to see if I could find any errors immediate after trying to create a note and this is what I found:

First, make sure iCloud is selected as the default account in the Notes settings on the iPad. If it is, sign out of iCloud and sign back in.

  • Notes App: I start a new note, start typing and the App creates numerous new notes every 3 seconds

Here is a strange problem I have with my Notes App which I am now using regularly in 10.8.2 since it syncs to all my Macs/iPad/iPhone:
I open the Notes App. I then wait for it to finish "Updating". I then add a New Note clicking the plus botton. As I type, after a couple of seconds it creates a new Note, so I have 2 notes. Then again as I keep typing - more notes. The "Top" Note has everything I typed and the ones below have 1 line less per Note! i.e. it saves a new note then moves on when I carry on typing!
This is a very strange problem and it is new to me - I have been using this App for the past few weeks with no problem.

Thanks for this, it really helped. I had just upgraded to 10.8 on this and the Notes app was installed - so it synced to my other Notes accounts.
The strange thing was that the default was to my Hotmail account even though I also have iCloud and Gmail accounts set up, too.
I have followed your suggestion and now only have iCloud Notes - and this works perfectly.
    Thanks!

  • Mail is making new trash can

sometimes when I delete, Mail makes a new, mini trash can called On My Mac. I keep deleting, but it comes back. what is this and how do I fix?

You need to review all of your account settings in Mail for the other mail services. We can't help you with them because you haven't provided enough information about them.
Just to note that your screen shots can be uploaded instead of using a link:

When I access my email from the iPhone, new messages appear only briefly and then immediately disappear, before I do anything.  Only old messages that were already in my inbox are visible.  I can't find the new messages anywhere -- they have not moved to Saved, Junk, Trash, anything.  IT is like the iPhone just ate them.  Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

If you have a POP3 account this means that another "client" email program has retrieved the messages and deleted the messages from the server. You need to change the server settings on that device to leave the messages on the server.
If you have an IMAP or MS Exchange account this means that someone read the messages on another device and either deleted them or moved them to another folder. Or there is an automated script that moved them to another folder.

Found a work-around.  I don't know if this applies to all Google calendars, or just the Google-Apps ones:
Add the calendar as a generic CalDAV calendar.  Use your full (hosted) gMail address as the username and www.google.com as the server address.
Interrestingly, ML matched this up to the main Google account in the "Mail, Contacts & Calendars" Preference Pane

  • How to use Notes in Mail?

    .. e.g.
    1. Where are Notes saved on a MacBook after File > New Note ... write note ... File > Save?
    2. Can you write a Note in OS X Lion Mail / MacBook, and end up with it in Notes on an iPad/iPhone?
The above covers it, the rest is a rant.
First, when apps have generic names like Mail or Notes, it makes it difficult to search for anything useful about them .. got to live with this. I have a cold too .. got to live with that, but I mention it as I feel under the weather and am getting fed up trying to do something simple and having to trawl the Support Community and Web with searches about Notes in Mail, just to find out how I should make effective use of Notes in OS X Lion Mail.
My question is in the heading. We all create Notes on our iPhone or iPad etc., and either end up with them in the Mail app on our Mac(Book) using IMAP or are using iCloud and can interact with the Notes there. However, I thought I'd try creating a new Note in the Mail app on my MacBook and push it the other way, to my iPad, or whatever. Although I'm using iCloud, my current set up uses IMAP to move my Notes around so forget iCloud for a minute. Great news in Mail, using File > New Note, was that the Note can have attachments, and if you attach a GIF say, you get the image in the Note - maybe everyone knows this and I'm the idiot.
So, I create a Note with attachments and just want to save it so it will end up on my iPad etc. .. File > Save is available, simple. However, where is the Note saved? It looks a lot to me like it's not saved anywhere and if you close it, have fun trying to find it again.
My research found a thread talking about making Notes searchable again by running the following Terminal command: mdimport ~/Library/Mail, but I really am not in the mood to press every button when all I am trying to do is basic functionality that I would expect to find in the "OS X Lion Applications User Guide" that other research here tells me doesn't exist (happy to be wrong).
Sorry to go on but it is mildly theraputic. Back to where the Note is saved, I did find that if you hit Send on the Note and then hit File > Save, you do get a copy of your draft email with No Recipients etc., in Drafts. However, it's an email with a Note in it, not a Note as found under Reminders > Notes, that you get when syncing a Note from your iPhone/iPad - it's also not going to end up in Notes on the iPad. Hmmm, another way to put these questions is: How do you write a Note on your Mac and end up with it in Notes on your iPhone/iPad? This cold must be really bad because this has to be such a dumb question.

I had the same issue. I found the answer on another thread written by an user named "hhoeksma". Here's what he/she wrote:
"You may be able to retrieve your Notes. They are probably in your Home folder under Library/Mail/V2/Mailboxes/Notes.mbox. You should make a copy of this folder and save it elsewhere; then look through the folders within this mailbox for files with a .emlx suffix. These files are your actual notes. If you open them they will open in mail and look like messages. You can then copy the contents elsewhere.
If your Library folder is not visible, go to the Finder, hold down the option key and select the Go menu--it will appear in the list.
I still do not have a way to synchronize (without iCloud) the Notes on my iPhone with those on my Mac, but at least I have the Notes accessible on my Mac."
hope it works for you too.

I could not save my sticky notes.
When I start the Sticky notes, two default nots appear with some description about the application.
I can delete them, add new notes, but after quit and restart the application, the two default notes appear again and the new notes are lost. It seems, that the notes are not saved.

  • Not receive mail

It is not possible to send e-mail. The message in the screen is 'the connection with the outgoing server failed.
I checked al the options I received from my provider and everything is ok. Maybe inside of the Ipad the SSL is on.
I do not know how I can fix this problem.
I also do have the problem with my Iphone4.
Somebody knows how to fix it?
    Thanks!

Like you, I'm not receiving mail consistently, and additionally I can't quit Mail properly.
I'm not using Gmail (rather iCloud), but I'm getting similar issues: there's no indication in Mail that it's not working (no spinning wheels, nothing greyed out); I only know it's not receiving mail properly because my iPhone or iPad have lots of mail coming in.
Like you, I have to quit and relaunch, BUT I can't even quit from the Mail app - I select quit, and the window disappears, but the little bubble never disappears at the bottom of the screen. I have to Force Quit from the Activity Monitor. If I do that, and then reopen, it works fine - for a while (maybe a day or two?).
The two problems - not receiving mail, and not being able to quit - seem related: they always come together. If I'm receiving mail, I can also quit properly.

  • Error: could not save mail

Each time I am in the progress of writing an e-mail, and screen appears that says something to the effect of "Error: Could not save mail." I am not sure what the program is trying to do...is there an option menu I should go to to configure the save settings?
    Thank you!

Sounds like the account's Drafts mailbox has some corruption.
Assuming this is a POP type account, quit the Mail.app first and using the Finder go to Home > Library > Mail > this account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account) > Drafts.mbox.
Delete the Drafts.mbox folder and empty the Trash.
When re-launching Mail, a new Drafts.mbox folder will be created automatically by Mail within the account named folder when composing the next message with the account and this should resolve the problem.

  • My mail deletes itself and Rebuild can't retrieve it....HELP!!!

Ok, this is the 2nd time this has happened to me.
I'm downloading my e-mails and when I go to read them, I get a "Message not received, please download from server" message or something along that line. After I click on rebuild, it doesn't rebuild and the mail that was supposed to be there is NOT anymore. I click on Mail several times, but to no avail. I even quit Mail and turn it back on and then click on "rebuild", but it's no use. Someone said that if my amount of mail goes over 600MB, it'll start acting funny and start saying "my mail is not downloaded" meaning it's disappeared.
Anyway, long story short, my mail amount went over 6000MB again and the whole thing (my e-mails) disappeared. After several attepmts to retrieve my large amount of e-mails via "Rebuild", it has failed to work. I'm thinking about getting one of those "Data Rescue" software, but I'm hoping someone out there has a less expensive solution. Can someone help me retrieve my lost mail? What can be done to retrieve my mail again? Is my mail lost forever? I'd appreciate it.
iMac G3 600   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Computer change very soon

This error message indicates an "overstuffed" mailbox issue which means the mailbox is over the recommended size limit or the mailbox has some corruption.
The recommended mailbox size limit for Jaguar or Panther Mail is 1GB and for Tiger Mail, 2GB but this "overstuffed" mailbox issue is not very common with Tiger Mail as it is with previous Mail.app versions.
An "overstuffed" mailbox issue can occur at any mailbox size but is more likely to occur depending on the number and size of message attachments contained in a mailbox and especially as a mailbox approaches or exceeds 1GB in size for Jaguar or Panther Mail.
Before upgrading to Tiger, I didn't allow any mailbox to exceed 500MB or so in size and used the Rebuild Mailbox function on the most active mailboxes on a regular basis (once a month or so depending on activity) and I never experienced an overstuffed mailbox issue.
Not using the Rebuild Mailbox function until there is a problem with a mailbox is not a good idea.
With the Mail.app quit and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account) > INBOX.mbox.
Move the INBOX.mbox to the Desktop.
Launch Mail and a new INBOX.mbox will be created automatically by Mail within the account named folder. This will allow the Mail.app to function properly again and not risk losing any new messages received and downloaded with this account while working on the old INBOX.mbox moved to the Desktop to recover the existing messages.
Control-click on the old INBOX.mbox moved to the Desktop and at the menu window that appears, select Show Package Contents.
List the package content file names and size of each here.
