Notes Not Syncing With 3.0 Firmware

Question

This is very frustrating. With an iPhone 3G and the 3.0 firmware, on an iMac running 10.5.7, with iTunes 8.2 (23), I can NOT get Notes to sync. I've read lots of posts from other folks having problems, but the fixes that work for them don't work for me. Based on those posts, I have:
- rebooted the phone and the Mac
- force-quit the Notes app on the phone
- unplugged and reconnected the phone
- various combinations of the above. LOTS of times
- checked, un-checked, and re-checked the Sync Notes option
And finally, in desperation, I e-mailed all the notes on my phone to myself, created new notes in Mail.app, and deleted all the notes on the phone. Then I set the Advanced option to "replace information on this iPhone" for Notes, hoping this would force the sync process to move all notes from Mail.app onto the phone. I've tried creating and deleting some new notes on the phone and in Mail.app. I've even gone into iSync preferences and deleted sync history, hoping this would force it to sync everything anew.
In every case, iTunes says it is syncing Notes on my iPhone, but when the sync completes, nothing has moved from phone to Mail, nor from Mail to phone. There are no error messages displayed, and nothing to indicate a sync failure. Just no notes.
I'm out of ideas and patience. Does anyone have any ideas? I even tried calling Apple support, but the automated phone system simply said there were no agents available, and then hung up on me.

So, almost three months along now, and notes sync still doesn't work for me. I've tried everything anyone has posted in these forums, and nothing has had any impact. I've had a support incident open with Apple since June 29. Last I heard from them was July 8. My incident is still open, but I don't expect to hear from them any time soon. Par, really, for my three experiences with Apple support since becoming an Apple customer.
Anyhow, just to update anyone who cares, Notes sync is still broken and I haven't a clue. I'm also having problems with some other third party applications that do their own sync, namely SplashID from SplashData. I went around and around with their tech support and never got a firm answer either.
At the moment, the only theory I have is that all of these sync problems have something to do with the fact that my home directory resides in an SMB share on a server instead of on the local Mac. To test this theory, I've purchased a Mac Mini and Snow Leopard Server and I'm in the process of setting it up to host my home directory in an AFP share to see if that has any bearing on the problem. I can't see why it would... applications shouldn't behave differently on a network directory than on a local directory, unless the application is doing some very unorthodox stuff at a very low level of the file system (in which case, shame on you, app developer).
If I learn anything useful, I'll post it here. If anyone has any other ideas, please post.
