Nothing but flashing amber

I've got my express here, it has functioned without issue for slightly more than a year. I just bought a new 802.11n gigabit base station and in the process of reconfiguring the express to commincate with the new AEBS, it is no longer receiving a configuration via Airport Utility. It consistently flashes amber on restart. The only way to get the express to show up in the utility is to do a factory reset, but once I make the changes to the config and go to restart, it never comes back. My only recourse is to do a hard reset again and then I'm back to square 1. Currently running FW 6.3 on the express. Any ideas? Thanks

This may be what you need:
AirPort Extreme and Express: Using WDS to create a network from multiple base stations.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107454
Requires AirPort Admin Utility.
( As I recall - when hard reset, AX default configuration is router base station, with ip address 10.0.1.1 and admin password "public" for wireless configuration access, and so it needs to be reconfigured for WDS, as explained above ).

  • TS1589 Had to replace our Airport Extreme when it stopped working (still under warranty).  Now I can't get anything but flashing amber light. Airport utility says "error occurred" when I try to get it set up.

Had to replace our Airport Extreme (802.11n) and now can't get anything but flashing amber light.  Have gone the route of turning off modem (overnight), restarting everything this morning and at least when I turned on the laptop (no desktop) the Airport Utility opened automatically.  I put in the info for the Airport Extreme that we had previously (password, etc) but it couldn't connect (said error occurred).  I would assume this is because of the flashing amber light?

I am having a similar issue.  However I've had my airport express for over 3 years.  Yesterday we had to reset the router as it wasn't broadcasting.
Today having same issue so we reset the router again.  And now still blinking amber.  When I go to the Airport Utility I can't even go to the Manual Setup as I'm getting the Error 4.  Internet works fine as the router and modem are hooked up to my computer via Ethernet cable.
I did a factory reset and the AE is broadcasting again.  but I can't get in to protect the network.  And it's still blinking amber.
    Any thoughts would be great.

  • Replaced motherboard now nothing but flashing colors (Video Test)

Power on and see nothing but one color at a time.  Red screen, Green screen, Blue screen, White screen, Black screen. Red screen, Green screen.............

    Hi! You might try this???
"It is quite possibly the hard drive is failing or has failed.  The reason you can't get into the bios or boot from a CD/DVD is because the bios it hanging trying to recognize the hard drive.  Try removing the hard drive and see if it will allow you into the bios or boot to a CD/DVD.  If it does, go the hard drive manufacturer's support site, downlod their hard drive diagnostic ISO image, then use the burn from image option to create the self booting cd, then boot to it and run the most exhaustive diagnosis on it if it will boot.  If you can't get it to boot to the diagnostic disk while the hard drive is installed you'll more than likely need to replace the hard drive.
If it won't get you into the bios or boot to a CD/DVD with the hard drive out of the system you need to try reseating the ram.  If that doesn't help you probably have a bad motherboard.  In this case it would more than likely be cheaper to just replace the laptop than fix it."

  • Eternal flashing amber light... what do i do?

    Hello all,
Here's a tricky one. Or maybe not.
I purchased an AirPort Express in Tokyo last year, and it has worked fine since then both in Canada and Japan (i know you're not supposed to use japanese hardware here but hey, it works).
I have recently moved to Vancouver, and my airport suddenly doesn't work anymore. Nothing. it flashes amber lights, no matter what I do, hard reset or factory reset. I can't soft reset since I can not even detect it on my computer. I know my airport card works because I use it everyday at school.
it's connected to an APC surge arrest, along with a stereo, but that shouldn't be an issue.
So the bottom line is that my comp does not see it, no matter what I do. any suggestions?
Also, is warranty covered in Canada if it was purchased in Japan? And how do i find out when the coverage is up since I no longer have the receipt... oops.
Thanks for any help you offer!

hello thomas, and thank you for your prompt reply.
DSL signal or no DSL signal, (whether the cable is plugged in or not) the computer refuses to recognize the AE, after resetting the AE, or after resetting the computer. When the DSL cable is connected to the AE, it will give me a green light, however it will still not be recognized by the computer, using Airport Setup Assistant, the menu bar, or Airport Admin Utility.
I brought it to my local apple reseller, and they thought they had fixed it simply by resetting it. It was temporarily recognized by their floor demo, and airtunes worked, however it was unable to connect to the internet when I brought it home after that. I reset the computer without touching the AE, and since that point in time I have yet to reconnect. I have tried several times hard resetting, factory resetting, restarting the computer, but to no avail.
As I mentioned, it was purchased in Japan last year. Can the ohmage affect the AEs usage?
There is a signal (I am directly connecting via cable to my computer right now) when it is plugged into the AE, and as mentioned above, it WILL get a green light. However that is the extent of it.
Interference should not be an issue, since I am trying to set it up right next to where the computer is. I have no cordless phones, and I know others in the building who are using AEs successfully, so I would be hesitant to blame reception.
I hope this helps you Thomas, and your help is greatly appreciated.
I've worked at an Apple reseller (when there were no Apple Retails in Canada), and I've gone through many problems with AXs and AEs... but this one is stubborn. Thanks for the support.

  • Everything works fine, but my LEDs are flashing amber since a power outage

I'm not having any issues with my new Airport Express base station, except that it's flashing amber all the time. This happened recently after a power outage in my house. It was odd also that a soft reset reset the base station as if I had done a hard reset, back to factory defaults, but outside of those two anomalies, everything's working properly.
I have it set on bridging, which is a bit strange, but that's the way it's been working all along with my ISP and when I had it set to DHCP then it was flashing orange.
I've done hard and soft resets on the base station and a power cycle on the DSL modem -- no change. I've turned up logging to error. Nothing there is catching my eye. I've restarted my iMac, turned off time machine, and edited settings from my MBP. No change.
Basically, I'm continually flashing amber since a power outage in my home. Otherwise it's working properly as far as I can tell. Any tips?

Correct. Seems fully functional. Perhaps clients had a more difficult time finding it when waking from sleep, tough to say as it occasionally has happened all along. I'm using a hidden network, with WPA2/Personal and MAC address access control.
Confirmed, ADSL speadstreem 4200 ADSL modem.
The plot thickens: I cycled power on it this morning, now I'm getting green LED but one client can't see it: the iMac. That was the client I was using to configure it, primarily, so perhaps that's part of the problem. Continuing to troubleshoot by removing layers of security to see if I can get the iMac to see it again. Restarting the iMac and resetting PRAM didn't resolve.
Thanks for your response. Any tips welcome!

  • I have an Airport Express, which flashes amber, but when I go to manual set up, it says there's an error and tells me to close configuration?

I have an Airport Express, which flashes amber, but when I go to manual set up, it says there's an error and tells me to close configuration? Once I complete that, the same thing occurs, and there's another error message?

Is this a new AirPort Express, or one that you have had for some time that has now developed problems?
What function do you want the Express to perform on your network?

  • AE Flashing Amber (Status: Internet Connection) but Internet Green

Apologies if this has been asked before, I couldn't find an answer.
I'm on an AE with a Motorola SB6120 modem, paying for Comcast service.
My AE worked fine two weeks ago when I was on Centurylink at another address.
    Problem:
    AE is flashing Amber.
    Status says "Internet Connection", yet...
AirPort Utility tells me that Internet is Green. Plus, I'm typing this through my wifi/internet, so it appears I'm online.
The other major issue is that none of my other wifi-capable devices can connect to my network. Only my MacBook. Not my iPhone, nor my wife's Dell laptop or Droid phone, nor my Nest thermostat. All can see the network, but none can connect to it. They either time out or, in the case of the Dell, say they can't find an IP address.
I have factory reset the AE, unplugged and re-plugged everything in every order I can think of. I've shut down my computer a half dozen times.
When I factory reset the AE, it was green/green for a moment, then went back to flashing Amber. At that point, it had two "Status" issues: Internet Connection and DNS Servers. I entered the DNS default: 75.75.75.75 and 75.75.76.76. DNS "status" went away, but "internet connection" remains.
When I click on the AE icon on the AirPort Utility, it gives the network name I chose, IP address is blank, the serial number is there and the version is 7.6.1. It lists one wireless client.
If I drill deeper, the "internet" menu says I'm connected using DHCP. IPv4 Address is blank. Subnet Mask is 255.255.255.0 and Router address is 192.168.100.1. I gave the DNS servers above, and IPv6 servers and domain name are blank.  On the wireless menu, the network mode is "create a wireless network", the network name is correct, it's WPA2 Personal security. On the "Network" menu, the Router Mode is "Off (Bridge Mode). All else is greyed out.
If anyone can help, it would be greatly, greatly appreciated. I am at wits end, my wife cannot connect to our home network, and I am questioning why I bought an AE when every other router seems to work better.
    Many thanks.

Not sure what you mean by default, as those are Google DNS addresses. The default would be to not enter anything and allow Comcast to provide them. In a perfect world Comcast would provide you with the fastest, most reliable DNS service, but that is often not the case, which is why there is OpenDNS, Google Public DNS, etc. In any case, that's not your current problem and now that you have that part working you can decide if that's what you need later.
On the "Network" menu, the Router Mode is "Off (Bridge Mode). All else is greyed out.
There's the problem. It should be "Share a public IP address". Bridge Mode just short circuits the router, which is why only one device is connecting.

flashing amber but is connected to the internet

Let's find out why that light is flashing, when it should be a nice solid green.
    On your Mac....
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click directly on the amber dot
A window will open to explain why the AirPort is complaining, along with suggested actions to remedy the issue.

  • Airport is flashing amber, but I can't fix it

    Hello all,
My Airport Express, which I use in a WDS as a music relay, is flashing amber (which means that it can't connect) and whenever I try to access it using Airport Setup Assistant or Airport Admin Utility, it says that it can't connect or just hangs. Airport Setup Assistant gave me this message:
    http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa187/adam_0/Picture1.png
There is absolutely no way that I know of to access it from my computer, and unplugging it and replugging it back in doesn't work. What is wrong???

When I went back to try to directly connect to the AX, I noticed that the light was solid amber, not flashing anymore. Supposedly that means that it's starting up, but it's been that way for a while... I have a location specifically for the ethernet connection to ABSs, but Airport Admin Utility couldn't detect any AXs. So is something wrong, or am I not able to connect directly to the AX?

  • I'm trying to stack an airport express to my extreme it shows that its part of the network but the express still flashes amber what to do please help

I'm trying to stack a new airport express to my airport exteme to extend the range to the other side of my house on the utility it recognizes it as part of the network but the express still flashes amber. what to do please help

Open AirPort Utility and click on the amber dot next next to the AirPort Express.
If you see an Update button click it.
Otherwise look at the information next to Status and click again on the smaller amber dot there. A window will open to explain why the AirPort Express is not happy along with some suggestions to remedy the "issue".

  • Hello I have 2 seperate airport express systems on my network, each connecting to a stereo in a different room.  suddenly, the one in the living room will not stop flashing amber, but the one in the bedroom works fine.  I have already tried resetting it

    Hello
I have 2 seperate airport express systems on my network, each connecting to a stereo in a different room. suddenly, the one in the living room will not stop flashing amber, but the one in the bedroom works fine. I have already tried resetting it with a pin, resetting it while plugging it in, and trying to find it in airport express setup (the setup assistant can't find it at all).
    What am i doing wrong?

How do I configure the AX to connect to the hub's wireless network? It will only scan one base station Airport Express at a time in the Airport Utility. I think what I am trying to do is use the hub as a router to the two AX's. Is there a specific way to set this up?
To set up the AX to join a wireless network as a "Wireless Client," using the AirPort Utility, either connect to the AX's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, try these settings:
    Launch the AirPort Utility.
    Select the AX.
If not already connected to the AX's wireless network, go ahead and switch to it when prompted.
AirPort Utility > Select the AX > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless
Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
Network Name: <type in the network name/SSID of the wireless network that you want to join or select it from the pop-up menu>
Wireless Security: None OR, if you are using security on your wireless network:
Wireless Security: <Select the appropriate level of security for the existing wireless network: WPA/WPA2 Personal | WPA2 Personal>
Password: <enter your wireless network security password>
Verify Password: <re-enter the same security password>
Click Update to write the new settings to the AX.

  • Airport extreme flashing amber but still have internet

My airport extreme is flashing amber but I still have an internet connection. Should I be concerned?

When I opened Airport Utility, it gave me a message that firmware needed to be updated (to 7.6).  However, clicking on continue or search for update (can't remember exactly what the option was), the utility searched endlessly for the update. I'd read on a previous discussion about unplugging the AirPort Extreme for 10 seconds. I did this while the airport was stuck in search mode. Sure enough that worked.

  • Just pluged in my airport extreme and it shows up in my wifi list, but it will not connect to the internet. its flashing amber. ive done just about everything on the instruction manual and website, and it still does not work.

so what do i have to do now? i think i just bought a new paper weight. but i am connected to the internet but the ethenet through the airport extreme.

When changing/adding/replacing network equipment, it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of all your equipment to make sure that they are communicating properly with each other.
    Please try the following:
Power-down the modem, AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS), and computer(s); wait at least 10-15 minutes. Note: The power-down order is not critical.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize and establish an Internet connection via your ISP.
Power-up the AEBS; wait at least 5-10 minutes or until its status light is a solid green.
Power-up the computer(s). Your computers should now be able to access the Internet connected either by wire or wireless to the AEBS.
Note: The AEBS may continue to have a flashing amber status light. This would, most likely, mean that it requires additional configuration changes, like setting up wireless security or a newer version of firmware is available.
