Nothing is backed up to iCloud on macbook

Last night I upgraded to Mavericks. Part of the reason I did this was so I could use iCloud. However, although all the information I can find says that iCloud backs up your data automatically, none of my 5gb storage allowance has been used and when I log in to iCloud none of my documents/photos etc, are there. I have searched the internet for anyone with a similar problem but can find nothing. Maybe I'm just being stupid - is there anything I need to do to make sure everything is backed up? Will it just back up later today?

The following is from this Apple document:  iCloud: iCloud storage and backup overview
What iCloud backs up
You have important information on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. iCloud automatically backs up your device over Wi-Fi every day while it’s turned on, locked, and connected to a power source. With your device information backed up in iCloud, you can easily set up a new device or restore information on one you already have.
Here’s what iCloud backs up:
Purchased history for music, movies, TV shows, apps, and booksYour iCloud backup includes information about the content you have purchased, but not the purchased content itself. When you restore from an iCloud backup, your purchased content is automatically downloaded from the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBooks Store. Automatic downloading is based on iTunes in the Cloud availability by country, and previous purchases may be unavailable if they have been refunded or are no longer available in the store.

  • TS1538 new iphone 4s won't back up to iclound or macbook

I got an upgrade iphone yesterday iphone 4s, the guy in the shop did a partial backup in shop.  Since getting home I have tried to reset it to back up to icloud and macbook with no luck.  The macbook says i need an updated version of itunes, but it is up to date (my old iphone also won't connect now, same message!).  When I try to back up with icloud it says there is a problem with backup, i've tried different date back ups.  Please help!?

Try a reset by pressing and holding the home and power buttons until the white Apple logo appears.

My second issue popped up just a few days ago. I am unable to send a picture to anyone via email (gmail).  I checked to make sure MMS is enabled (it is) and I certainly have MMS provided through Verizon.
MMS has absolutely nothing to do with email.
Is this the only email account on the device? If not, are  you able to email pictures via other accounts?
Are you able to send emails with pictures attached from the gmail account on a computer?

  • Recently got a new iPod 4th gen; I had previously backed up to iCloud and subscribed to iTunes Match, and then wound up syncing the new iPod to my MacBook Pro; all iCloud tunes were downloaded to Mac but won't all sync to the iPod - any suggestions?

Recently got a new iPod Touch 4th gen; I had previously backed up to iCloud and subscribed to iTunes Match, and then wound up syncing the new iPod to my MacBook Pro; all iCloud tunes were downloaded to Mac but won't all sync to the iPod after multiple attempts, despite all songs showing properly on the Mac and multiple syncs occurring after all songs were properly reflected on the Mac.  I updated iTunes Match from the iTunes Store menu as well pre-sync.
I should mention that I had previously had the library on a Dell (which is still running) and shared it on my home network.  While all iTunes purchases now show in the Dell, the Mac is the device I use for all syncs.
There appears to be no rhyme or reason to the iCloud physical sync failure - some songs were legacy, some were purchased via the PC, some on the old iPod.
The Mac shows all the songs correctly and none show iCloud status -all have been downloaded, but the downloaded songs that were previously showing up as iCloud based aren't syncing to the iPod.
Is there any way to force all music being seen by my iPod as iCloud to download to so I can listen to them offline?  Is there a way to force the sync from iTunes?

The "system" performed as designed. All devices syncing to one iCloud account are kept in common sync. The idea is that all such devices belong to one user. Different users should have different iCloud accounts.  Once your contacts were edited, all devices were updated as well and subsequent backups (from yours and her device) reflected the changed contacts (and any other data that may have been edited like calendars). Your first task is to change your daughter over to a new account before she makes other changes.
The only way I see for getting back contacts is to restore them from a time machine backup, assuming you also have a Mac included in the account which syncs the contacts. However, I'm not sure whether time machine includes contacts from iCloud along with those that are local, "on my Mac".
Otherwise the deleted contacts are gone.

  • How can I have contacts on iPhone show up on iPad and MacBook Pro? All are backed up to iCloud.

Is it possible for all contacts to appear on all 3 of my Apple devices regardless of on which device they are entered?  I have an iPhone 5, iPad 2 and MacBook Pro; I'd like to see the same contacts on all. All three devices already back up to iCloud. Thanks!

No you haven't misunderstood if you have those settings on. The contacts on your phone should automatically sync to the other devices. They should also be viewable/editable at https://www.icloud.com

  • I can't select Photos to back up in iCloud from my MacBook Pro. Can anyone tell me why? I have 17 GB of available data that I'm paying for.

My MacBook Pro data is backed up in iCloud (I pay monthly for 20 GB) but apparently my photos are not backed up and it won't allow me to select Photos from the list for back up. Can anyone tell me why?

The current iCloud isn't meant for backing up Macs.  It's only for mobile devices.
The beta iCloud Photo Library in iOS 8 will store photos in the iCloud for access from other mobile devices for from iCloud.com.  The new Photos app under development for OS X on Macs will not be released until sometime this spring.  It will have the capability of storing and accessing photos from iCloud.
iCloud Drive is for sharing documents between multiple devices signed in to the same iCloud ID. When the new Photos application is released the space purchased for iCloud will be available for the photo storage system.

My iphone is backing up to icloud but not my macbook air nor my iMac. Any ideas?

I use Time Machine with an external HD.  That seems to do what I need.  Others also recommend an second EHD with a bootable clone of your boot drive and use a 3rd party app like Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper, Synk Pro, etc. to keep the clone up to date.
In addition to Time Machine I have a hard drive that I keep key files backed up with Synk Pro which does incremental backups, i.e. copying only those new or modified files.  For other candidates for the cloning and backup apps to go MacUpdate.com and search for "file backup" and "clone".

Welcome to the Apple community khnkOliver.
I assume these photos, or at least not all of them weren't in photo stream.
You should be able to recover your photos from a back up.

You don't. Once it's in recovery mode, anything that was on the phone is already gone.

Log into the iCloud on your MacBook Pro and enable Photo Stream:
Then launch iPhoto and set iPhoto's Photo Stream preferences to the following:
Then check the Photo Stream section of iPhoto:
This is to confirm that the photos are still in Photo Stream. If they are they will be imported into the library.
NOTE: not all photos in an iPhone will be in the Photo Stream. PS only keeps photos in it for 30 days.
If you have the missing photos in your library put them in an album.  Connect your iPhone to the Mac and open iTunes.  In iTunes you can select that album in the library and sync the photos to your iPhone to get them back on the iPhone.

  • Macbook not backing up to icloud

My macbook is not backing up to icloud.  Both my iphone and ipad are backing up and sharing information instantaniously.  I've turned everything off and back on several times.  In icloud on my Mac it recognized the latest iphone and ipad backups.  When I log into icloud it shows all the information backed up from iphone and ipad but shows no new information from the Macbook.  I've checked all the setting I know anything about but am having no luck.  What do I need to do?

Go to System Preferences>iCloud, click Sign Out, choose Delete at all of the prompts, restart your Mac, then go back and sign back in.  This deletes your iCloud data from your Mac but not from iCloud.  Your iCloud data will reappear on your Mac when you sign back in, after a brief delay as it redownloads.
Then try creating a test calendar event, contact, and note on your Mac to see if they appear on icloud.com now.

  • Signed up and backed up, but iCloud is empty.

I signed up for iCloud, got my email verified, and hit 'Back-Up Now' in iCloud on my iPhone.  Problem is, nothing is actually on my iCloud, and nothing has transferred to my MacBook.  Is there something I need to do to get my MacBook to connect with my iphone?  I'm so confused.

Did you check your settings on your iPhone to sync with iCloud?
Switch on the different services like e-mail, contacts etc in: Settings > iCloud
Click Storage, backup where you will see an indication that your device is backed up or not below the Backup now button.
I had a problem that my devices didn't sync music that I purchased on my iPad to my Mac and got the info that it's probably because I live in Sweden who hasn't started the service yet to sync in the cloud. I solved the problem by connecting a cable between my iPad and my Mac.

  • TS4009 Is there anyway to establish when my phone last backed up on iCloud if the phone in question is no longer usable?

Is there anyway to establish when my phone last backed up on iCloud if the phone in question is no longer usable?
My wife's phone was dropped down the loo just a day after returning from holiday with all our holiday snaps/vids on it. The phone is dead and only showing on iTunes as in recovery mode. No problem I replied, as it should have backed up on iCloud, however she then advised that the iCloud storage full message had been showing recently but was not sure for how long it had been there. Is there anyway to tell when the last back up occurred or do we have to wait for a new device to be be restored?

In 3 years I never synched my calendar to iCloud for fear I would lose my data. I explained all of this (and the fact that my phone had never been backed up to iCloud or iTunes to the tech at the Genius Bar (I was having wifi issues with my phone which is why I was there so I COULD START BACKING UP) and he assured me synching / merging to iCloud would not delete my calendar events: well, it did. Yes! I have spent hours with apple tech support and had my iTunes account in "troubleshoot " status so the engineers could go into iCloud to see if they could retrieve events. They found nothing. I just don't understand where it goes if it's on the phone? I know there are ways forensic engineers retrieve "lost " data on cell phones. I just thought it might be worth it to post on here and see if there is any hope   .
