Noticed that my NEF files from Nikon D7000 camera are noticeably different in LT4 vs Nikon software?

Hello,
Noticed that my NEF files from Nikon D7000 camera are noticeably different in LT4 vs Nikon software. Read where folks are adjusting setting in LR4 for Nikon camera, but need help in how please. Also, perhaps there is a better way?
thanks,

There is now another way, dunno if you'll consider it better or not :
ISO Detailer now has infrastructure for supporting camera settings emulation.
Implemented so far (Nikon only):
* Picture Control Name (e.g. Neutral, Vivid, ... ) -> Camera Calibration Profile.
* Active D-Lighting -> Lr basic adjustments.
If you want other stuff, you'll have to come up with it yourself, by editing a table in lua text format (or supply the information for me to do it).
Reminder: Ottomanic Importer can do this emulation during import, ISO Detailer is for doing it after import.

I need help! when I am importing my NEF Raw files from my D3300 camera into lightroom 5 and try to use the "copy as DNG" button I always get an error message saying that "saying the file is not recognized by the raw format support". The whole purpose of that button is so that the file can be recognized... How can I make the "copy as DNG" button work as it is supposed too?? Thank you

Thank you for responding. So I essentially will never be able to use that button in lightroom 5? do I need to get LR 6? Will there ever be an update for LR 5 that will enable me to use it?
Does DNG Converter work within LR or do I have to upload pictures to my computer and then make a second copy in DNG format. and then go into LR and use them?
    Thank you @dj_paige

  • Opening NEF files from Aperture into Camera Raw?

Does Aperture allow opening of images directly from a project / album into Adobe Camera Raw?
Seems like it should yet I've not been successful in finding out how to do this.
    Thanks for any help offered.

I would argue that point with you. If you want to say that Photoshop, Elements, or Lightroom have more powerful editing tools, then you may well be right. But ACR is merely the front end to these programs and while I may be misaken on this, does not exist as a stand alone program.
I'm not going to pretend that I know everything there is to know about all of these different programs. The only thing I can tell you is that Camera Raw (not a standalone but part of PShop CS) provides not only powerful tools for correcting exposure, tone, HSL, sharpening, noise and all the other features that photographers love, but it can correct the visual and chromatic aberrations based on the camera lens profile metadata embedded in the photo. In short, with one click I can correct the distortions in the image that are unique to the lens used to take the image. It also has a camera calibration feature that can be set to the same as it is set in my Nikon.
I love Adobe Camera Raw. It is very good at what it does and is not trying to be more than what it is. I'm very happy with it and have no impetus to try another editing software.
Cataloguing photos is not what CR does, however, and for this, I have been using Aperture which seems to be trying to be much more than simply a cataloguing program.
As mentioned, I used to use something called iViewMedia Pro which was terrific but was bought out by Microsoft and turned into something called Expression Media. That worked until they decided to evolve away from merely being a cataloguing software. Looked into Extensis Portfolio but they want an insane amount of money for their product. Aperture seemed like it had the cataloguing features I need and so far, I don't have many complaints about it ... except one notable one: When I need to open a NEF file for editing, it opens directly into Photoshop rather than in CR.
What I'm hearing from these discussions is that there is some kind of conversion incompatibility which is a shame, but answers the question. I can only hope that Apple and Adobe will improve their products so that they are more compatible with one another.
I will, however, not hold my breath.

  • Cannot open NEF files from D200 in Camera Raw 4.1

I am using Photoshop CS3 with Windows XP. I have downloaded the latest Camera Raw update (4.1) and installed as directed.
I am able to open Raw files from Nikon D70 in camera raw but unable to open files from D200 - I am getting the message that it is an invalid file.
When I revert back the the previous version of camera raw I can open these files with no problem.
    Can amyone advise please.
    Thanks

    Janet,
    > I am not using Photoshop 6, where did you get that from?
We are referring to Trevor in post #2, not you.
As to your issue, just a general comment, as I don't do Windows:
Even though it sounds too obvious, make sure you have properly uncompressed (unzipped) the downloaded ACR 4.1 and that you have installed it according to the instructions.
    >I have downloaded the latest Camera Raw update (4.1) and installed as directed.
Note that you didn't say "unzipped", so forgive me for bringing it up.

  • Have CS 5 Installed on my iMac and works ok. But installed on my new MacBook Pro it won't open NEF files from my Nikon D810. Displays NEF icons, but when I try and open them the response is: Make sure latest RAW updates are installed. If problem persists

Have CS 5 Installed on my iMac and works ok. But installed on my new MacBook Pro it won't open NEF files from my Nikon D810. Displays NEF icons, but when I try and open them the response is: Make sure latest RAW updates are installed. If problem persists follow link: http://www.adobe.com/go/kb407111. Have installed Bridge 5.0.2.4; Raw Ref Version 7.0.0.308; DNG converter_8_7_1.dmg; Bridge 5.0.2 Update 2. Also same problem with Lightroom which I don't normally use. Lightroom_3_LS11_mac_3_6.dmg installed.

In the link you posted it states that the Nikon 810 requires ACR 8.6 or newer.
Version of ACR are specific to versions of Photoshop. You cannot use 8.6 nor even 7.0.in CS5.
I believe that ACR 6.7 is the latest that will work with CS5, so make sure you have this installed and get rid of ACR 7.
Having 2 versions of ACR will cause problems.
You have already downloaded DNG Converter 8.7.1.
Have you double clicked the DMG file to allow you to install DNG Converter on your computer?
Be aware that DNG converter is a stand-along application and not a plug-in.
You need to open DNG converter at select the FOLDER that contain your .NEF files.
Don't open the folder and try to select individual files, it doesn't work that way.
After converting your D810 files to DNGs you can then open the DNGs in CS5
The problem is your camera didn't exist when CS5 & its version of ACR was developed.
i don't use Lightroom, but the list mentions Lightroom 5.6 as needed to open D819 so your 3.6 version of LR won't cut it.

  • I have LR2 but not able to access nef files from my Nikon D800

Unable to access nef files from my Nikon D800.

You need Lightroom 4.1 or later (the current version is 5.7.1 but will not run on Windows Vista or XP and certain Mac operating systems, if that's an issue)
You could also download the FREE Adobe DNG Converter version 7.1 or later and convert your RAWs to DNG and import those into your Lightroom 2.

I just bought a Nikon D7000 camera & need to convert Nikon RAWS (NEF) files & they are not recognized by my Adobe CS4 on my Mac 0sX 10.6.8

Don't worry.  Every newly supported camera model in any given version of Adobe Camera Raw will be supported in ALL subsequent versions of ACR.
The very last version of ACR that will work with CS4 is 5.7.
If your camera in not supported by ACR 5.7, you need to upgrade your version of Photoshop, or download and use the free stand-alone Adobe DNG Converter to convert your raw files to raw DNGs first.  Always download the latest versions of said free stand-alone Adobe DNG Converter (3 or 4 per year), currently DNG Converter 7.1.  DNGs can be processed with any version of ACR starting with version 2.4.
To see what was the first version of ACR to support your camera model was see:

  • Photoshop Elements 10 not recognizing .NEF files from Nikon D3200 camera

I've been using Photoshop Elements 10 to edit raw .NEF files from my Nikon D3000 with no problems.  Recently I purchased a Nikon D3200 and I shoot in raw .NEF files using that also but Photoshop Elements 10 will not recognize those .NEF files to edit. The error I'm getting is saying the file type is not correct.  Any way to correct this?

For the D3200 you have two alternatives:
    (1) Upgrade to PSE 11. (2) Download and install the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your NEF files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the files will open in all versions of PSE (keep your original NEF’s as backups and for use in Nikon software)
Windows download click here DNG Converter 7.2
Mac download click here DNG Converter 7.2
You can convert a whole folder of NEF images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:

  • Problem with NEF files from Nikon D4

Hi everyone. I find a problem with nef files from my Nikon D4. When files are open in ViewNX2 (free viewer software from Nikon) they are perfect, as shooted... but in ACR they are very different... I use LR4 or CS5 with ACR 6.7 and the difference seems to be linked at D-Lighting function. My impression is that ACR dont read this option and picture are very very dark that original shootings. Anyone have this problem?

This question used to be answered in the FAQ before they revised it.  So, here we go again.  ViewNX is capable of reading all of the in-camera settings such as, camera profile, saturation, sharpness and other settings.  It is capable of doing this because it is Nikon Software, and they have the ability to program it to read the settings from their raw images.  Lightroom does not read those settings from Nikon cameras or any other brand of camera.  Part of the reason is that different camera makers store those settings differently.
When I first started using Lightroom I adjusted one of my images that represented what I normally shoot until it looked the way I wanted it.  Then I saved those adjustments as my default settings for the camera.  From that point onward, whenever I import images those settings are automatically applied, and it takes care of the vast majority of my images.  Of course, I still have to make individual adjustments.  But my default settings greatly reduce the amount of how they work that I have to do.
Active D-lighting is is one of those features that Lightroom does not recognize.  You would be well advised not to use it, or else create a preset to simulate its effect.  It will provide no benefit to your Lightroom work.
This is a fundamental difference with Lightroom, and something that must be understood and implemented if you are going to use the program effectively.
I realize this question was asked in the ACR forum and I referenced Lightroom throughout.  But the principle is the same, and the recommended procedure is the same.

  • Why is my Photoshop CS3 not recognizing my NEF file from my new Nikon D7100, but will recognize NEF's from my old Nikon D90?

Help... Why is my Photoshop CS3 not recognizing my NEF file from my new Nikon D7100, but will recognize NEF's from my old Nikon D90?

Because many of the camera makers slightly alter their versions of their raw format whenever they release a new camera model.
Nikon does it, Canon does it, and also several other camera makers.
There is not a single version of NEF that all Nikon cameras use, nor a single version of CR2 for all Canon models.
Here is a list of supported cameras and the required ACR plugin needed to open the raw files.
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
Versions of ACR are specific to each version of Photoshop.
Older versions of PS cannot use the latest version of ACR.
You need to download the latest version of Adobe DNG Converter.
This will convert your newer 7100 files to DNGs that can then be opened in older versions like CS3.
Be aware DNG only works on folders of files, not individual files. Select the FOLDER not a single file

  • When will we be able to read NEF files from a NIKON 5200?

Just got a Nikon D5200. Photoshop and Bridge cannot read NEF files from this camera. It worked fine with my D3100 camera. When will we be able to read NEF files from a NIKON 5200?

    Welcome to the forum!
As often, we cannot give a simple answer without more informations: what version of Photoshop and Bridge are you talking about?
The rule of thumb is to update Camera Raw to the latests version compatible with Photoshop, and if it does not work, to download the last version of the DNG converter and use it on the files to convert them to DNG that can be opened in the older versions of Camera Raw and other raw converters.
Normally, to update go to Help>Updates...
According to http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.htmlhe first version of Camera Raw that can open the NEF from the 5200 is Camera Raw 7.3, that works with Photoshop CS6. If you version of Photoshop is older, you'll need to use the DNG converter 7.4:
(but, since you don't state what operating system you are using, here are the links for both versions:

    Mac: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=106&platform=Macintosh )

How do I update Adobe Bridge CS4 so that I can view NEF files?
Unfortunately, you don't. Bridge can never be updated again once a new version of Creative Suite comes out, so bridge CS4 can't be updated past where it was back when CS5 came out. There is no way to make bridge CS4 see the raw files for the D7100, I'm afraid.

  • ? After updating my iTunes match, I noticed that some music files were no longer listed on my cloud on my laptop.  They are still listed on my iPhone. These are files imported to the cloud from legitimate CDs.

Just updated iTunes Cloud.  Noticed that some music files are missing, entire playlists.  They were here a few hours ago, now they are not.
But they are still on the cloud menu on my smartphone.
Files uploaded to cloud from CDs, legit, no boots or anything like that.
My iTunes is 10/7.0.21.  I have the newer version on a desktop and don't much care for it, so have resisted updating on the laptop, which is my primary computer.
I've rebooted the computer, turned off iTunes Match and turned it back on again.  No change.
Lots of questions.  How can my cloud catalog be different on different devices?  How can I get this stuff back on my lap-top cloud?  Anyone else having problems like this?  I'm trying to trim my physical collection by importing stuff to the cloud and discarding the physical media.  Am I shooting myself in the metaphorical foot?
    Suggestions much appreciated.

You might want to post this over in the iTunes Match forum.
