Novation ReMOTE 25SL

Hello forum,
I'm trying to get a Novation ReMOTE 25SL MIDI controller to work with GarageBand 08. I'm not that concerned about being able to program the pots and sliders. I'd just like to get the keyboard working.
When I plug in the USB cable for the ReMOTE, GarageBand tells me:
The number of MIDI inputs has changed.
Now 3 inputs are available.
When I play something on the keyboard, nothing happens. However, when I tap the drum trigger pads, I get notes for whatever instrument is selected.
In the MIDI Devices screen of the Audio MIDI Setup utility, the device shows up as ReMOTE SL. It has 3 pairs of in/out arrows underneath it, as expected. If I select "Test Setup" tapping on a drum trigger will make a "tink" sound and the "in" arrow of the leftmost in/out pair will briefly turn blue. I haven't found what activates the other two "in" arrows. I was hoping one would be for the keyboard keys and the other for the aftertouch function.
Can someone give me a clue about what I failed to do right or even just failed to do?
Thanks!

Contacted Novation Support. They pointed me to a utility called MIDI monitor at www.snoize.com. I used this utility to check every pot, button, pad, slider, and key on the unit. The only things that weren't working were the keys and the octave buttons.
Novation suggested that the ribbon cable that connects the keyboard to the circuit board may have come loose. I opened the unit up and sure enough, the ribbon cable was not connected to the circuit board. I connected it, closed it up, started up GarageBand and now everything works fine.

  • Questions about Novation Remote 25SL integration with Logic Pro 8

Preface: I have to apologize in advance if this seems somewhat confusing. I'm sure some of the terms I'm using are just plain wrong - I'm somewhat of a n00b.
I have a Novation Remote 25SL configured to use AutoMap with Logic Pro 8 from Novation's website and most things are working well. It's confusing at times because sometimes I find it hard to tell what mode the keyboard is in, but that's ok - it's the least of my worries. Based on what I've seen through reading the manuals and my own experimentation, I have a couple of questions:
    - Despite what the guy at the store told me, I can't seem to figure out how to select different kits from within the SL. For example, if I have a garageband instrument selected on a track - can I use the data/select knob on the SL as it is now, or do I have to program that somewhere, somehow? Or if I have Ultrabeat on a track, can I use the knob to select the different kits/banks?
    - Is there a way to control non-Apple AU plugins like the rest of those which ship with Logic? All the sexy looking ones like Ringshifter, Compressor, Overdrive, etc. It seems odd that Remote will go into Mixer Automap mode and be able to control the certain portions of the instruments, but not the plugins that are automatically loaded into the channel strip when the instrument is loaded.
    - I have a 25 key Remote. In Ultrabeat, I find the key maps miss a chunk of notes between where the drum pads end and where the keyboard starts (or vice-verse). Is there a way to get it so each key has a mapping? 25 keys in Ultrabeat, 25 keys on the board plus 8 drum pads - seems like there's lots of room.
Thanks in advance for all your feedback.

    Follow-up research:
Apparently there is a driver conflict between the AlphaTrack and the ReMOTE. So far I have got the ReMOTE working - sort of - in Logic using the following method which was published at Novation's Answerbase:
    1. disconnect the alphatrack.
    2. launch Logic and then turn on the ReMOTE SL.
    3. Go into the Environment window, and add a Monitor Object. Connect it to the Remote SL's ports 2 and 3.
So far, this seems to at least get MIDI note input into Logic, but the Automap function seems a bit sketchy so far. This will depend on Novation updating Automap and the SL's firmware for Logic 8.
As noted previously, there doesn't seem to be any AlphaTrack support in Logic 8 yet and it's up to Apple to make it work. They do support their TranzPort product, so with luck there'll be support in the next update.
I'd really love to use BOTH control surfaces with Logic simultaneously -- the AlphaTrack with the Mixer and plugins, the ReMOTE with Software Instruments. I suppose it might take some interesting mapping but this doesn't seem like that strange a setup -- there are plenty of "mixer surfaces" like the M-Audio one, and the Novation Automap stuff is quite popular....

  • Novation Remote 25SL Not Working with Logic Pro (Logic Automap)

    Hi,
I can't seem to get my new Novation Remote 25 SL to work in Logic Automap mode.
I have the Remote SL in Logic AutoMap (template #39). When I launch Logic Pro 7, The Remote SL shows : "Logic AutoMap" on the Left LCD display, and nothing else happens, it seems to be frozen at this state. The Up/Down arrows on the Left side don't change anything.
Any clues why this is happening ?
I have read many posts on this and other forums of user issues in setting the Remote up properly, and have it work in Logic Automode. Tried many configurations, and settings, re-installed sw, OS 1.0.13, but no luck so far.
I would like to hear from Logic Pro 7 users who have successfully setup their Remote SL with Logic Pro 7.2.1 in Logic Automode, and are working with this system without any issues.
This will be very helpful in figuring out if there is something wrong in my settings, or if the unit itself is defective, or I am doing something wrong during the installation of the software ? I have been trying to get this thing to work for the past two days, with no success so far.
The Remote SL should be a wonderful controller for Logic Pro 7 (once it works !) so, I'm being as patient as I can with this thing.
    I'm using Logic pro 7.2.1 on a Mac G5 2.5 Quad, Mac OSX 10.4.6
    Thanks.

    Hi Blaze,
I tried your settings, but no change, the Remote SL is still frozen showing :
"Logic Automap" on the left LCD .
You mention setting "Mixer View 64" well the parameter I see is called :
"Mixer View Fader" which I guess is the same one you are referring to. I set it to 64, it was set to 8, but has not changed anything. Still having the same problem. This problem is dragging into Day 3, what a bummer.
    Thanks.

  • Frontier AlphaTrack and Novation ReMOTE both unusable with Logic Express 8

After reading all the hype about Logic 8 I went and picked up a copy of Express to see how easy it was to learn -- and indeed, it's MUCH easier than 7 and the interface is absolutely beautiful. It's exactly the way I would have designed it, both in layout and aesthetics.
However, I'm a bit disappointed that I can't use my brand-new Novation ReMote 25SL with Logic. During the first launch, the Automap server seemed to launch and quit in an endless loop until I force quit it. Logic doesn't seem to properly recognize it either as a controller or as a MIDI keyboard.
Likewise, my Frontier Alphatrack unit, which is supposed to be supported by Logic 8, doesn't really do anything -- it displays a few random parameters, nothing responds properly.
I've been using Mackie Tracktion 3 and Reason 4 with these controllers quite successfully. I'm a little frustrated as this means I can't really get started to use Logic without a lot of mousing, and my carpal tunnel tends to protest when I do that.
One fix I read online involved hacking files in Logic 8 to remove the AlphaTrack support in order to get the Novation keyboard to work -- but I'm not going that far!
Frontier, for their part, say they have provided all the data to Apple to allow them to implement support -- nearly a year ago actually -- but their feeling is that it got lost in the race to release Leopard and Logic 8. I'm not sure about Novation but they might need to update their software and firmware for Leopard / Logic.
Is anyone else having the same experience? Any success / frustration / news you'd care to share?
cheers and thanks in advance --

  • Novation ReMote : Please help !

    Hi,
I´ve just purchased a Remote 61 and I´mn totaly disappointed with this tool. Ok, the keys are great and the knobs looks good, but how can I use it to controll Logic Pro 7.1 ??
I did all thing which are described in the manual. So I changed the prference files , I loaded the Logic 7 remotLSO, but nothing works.
It´s nearly uselesse at the moment and I´m really depressed, cause I thought that I am able to controll a lot of AU instruments as well as Logic too.
I would like to know if somebody here in that forum can show me a way how I can use the Remote with the templates. Or maybe someone has written his own template which works fine ?
Thank you very much , all help and hints are welcome so much .
    best regards
    udap

I own a Novation Remote as well and like any MIDI controller, it takes learning how to setup your MIDI controller to work with your DAW. If you read the Novation Manual, download the appropriate template editor, drivers, etc... then you'll be up and running in no time. It took me about 2 days to build all of my templates (for all the synths) and get total control of logic just using the Remote. Just have patience. One thing I've noticed though is the Novation drivers seem to be very buggy in OSX Tiger. I've had continuous crashes with the Remote and my friend just installed the Novation Remote and said Logic has been crashing on him since installing it. So, if you can, run the controller through an Audio interface to avoid potential issues.

  • Novation remote sl25 toggling screensets

i am using a novation remote sl25 and suddenly upon pressing a key on the keyboard it starts randomly toggling the screensets and flickering between them and i cant stop it unless i quite logic. can anyone offer some help i'd appreciate it.
    thanks

Well touch wood all seems to be working. Would you believe turning sl25 off and on sorted out errors . I have new issues though now but they are for another post. I have to say on the whole the set up of this daw has been much easier than my other setups. I live in hope the anxiety will fade soon and I can get down to the business of making music.

  • NOVATION REMOTE ZERO SL and  Apple Final Cut

    Hi all!
Have you guys tested NOVATION REMOTE ZERO SL with FCP.
    Thank you
    HBars

If FCP recognized this device at all, it would definitely not support all of the features that the unit offers. In order to work with FCP an audio control surface needs to support either the Mackie Control protocol or Logic Control protocol. And even then the only controls you actually can utilize are the faders for levels, mute and solo buttons, pans, and transport controls. If your device can display timecode, that will show up as well.
Now if you use Pro Tools or Logic or some other DAW this would be a great control surface and it would be a bonus if it worked with FCP. However, for just using with FCP it would be overkill and most features would remain inactive.
If you are looking for a cheap control surface consider the Behringer BCF2000. For about $200 it gives you nearly everything that a Mackie MCU gives you.

  • Novation ReMote SL Compact 49

    Hi,
I'm new to midi controllers but I've been doing some research on the Novation ReMote Sl Compact 49 controller and have the following queries:
    1) Does it work well with Login Pro 8?
    2) Is it a good controller to use with Logic Pro 8?
    3) From my research, there seems to be issues with the Automap Universal 3 software with Logic Pro 8 - is this correct?
    4) Is this controller difficult to use for a complete newbie?
    5) What other controllers would people recommend?
    Thanks.
    Tony.

The novation compact works well with logic but there is a few issues.
Like stated above you have to use hui mode to control plug in fx. Its not that stable (with my very limited use). You can control all of logics instruments with a template included in the firmware. The mixer control works well and if you set the controller settings properly it will show you your parameters of your logic instrument on the screen. For some reason every time I reboot logic I have to reset the controller settings though.
I dont use it as an exclusive controller but for AU plugs ive not had many problems. The UI had some issues but those seemed to be fixed with version 3.
I was hard pressed to find a better controller for the price. It was between mpk49 and the novation and automap was the selling point for me. Its not without flaws but im happy with it.

  • Multiple USB inputs - Keyboard/Mouse, Novation Remote, and Mackie MUC Pro

Im running a Macbook Pro, 10.4 with Logic 8. I just got a Mackie Universal Controller Pro and also use a Novation Remote 49. Ive got an additional 20" screen, with the USB inputs as well.
    Im trying to hook up:
    - External keyboard and mouse
    - Mackie Universal Control Pro
    - Novation Remote
If I plug in the Mackie and the Novation directly to the laptop, everything works. Of course, this then doesnt allow me to plug in the keyboard/mouse as there are only 2 usb ports on the laptop.
Since Im using the external screen, I have the additional usb inputs on there. So, I plug either the mackie or the novation into one of the usb ports, and then the screen/aux cables into the other. Then I plug the other controller into the screen.
With this configuration - one of the controllers wont be recognized. I generally get a message about reassigning or not reassigning them as well.
Regardless of which I choose, the second controller wont come up. Using the midi preferences and controller parameters within Logic doesnt seem to do much either.
Whats the work around here? If I get a multi USB hub, will this fix it? Im wondering why daisy chaining these pieces doesnt allow the midi to be properly routed or recognized.
Hopefully this makes sense and someone has the solution! Thanks.

Hey - Thanks for the quick response.
'Why don't you leave the controllers connected directly to the computer, and connect your keyboard/mouse to the screen's USB ports?"
Problem is - there are only two USB ports on the compute. In order for the external displays USB port to work, it has to be plugged in to the computer via USB as well. I have the mouse plugged in to the qwerty keyboard, but they both need to be plugged in to a USB port somewhere regardless.
    Am I missing something?
It seems like the problem is really trying to plug an external controller in to an apple displays USB port (so that could be a power issue, although the Mackie is self powered, or just general connectivity).
    Based on the above, suggestions?

  • Novation Remote SL Help

Okay so I used v7 of the installer on Novation's site (so the Novation OS is on 1.015), but the Logic automapping doesn't seem to work right. I read that one thread on it, but nobody seemed to have a clearcut way to get it to work.
Am I supposed to do something else?

I got a SL Remote 25 and it's fine. I downloaded all drivers and templates, and when I scroll through the menu it displays all templates from Logic to Bass station. When I open Logic it recognizes it and switches to automap. Can't get the transport to work though.
In Reason the automapping is amazing. Logic isn't fully operational yet, but Reason is and I can't wait till it works like Reason.
I'd say install every driver available, start with the first one and finally v7. Then try again. Maybe open the free bass station included in Logic and select the mapping for the bass station on the SL. That's how I did it.
From there on, try a few plugins in Logic and use automap to display the parameters on the SL.

  • Mainstage acting crazy when Novation Remote 61 SL connected

When ever I plug the Remote SL into the computer, Mainstage starts going crazy. It starts switching from patches by it self and not staying in any particular for more than a second. It all begun by it self and I can't figure why its doing it. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the automap server. It is the latest one 3.4.

I am using a ReMOTE Zero SL and I am also having issues with it. The Novation will send out pitch bend and mod wheel messages (non-center pitch and non-zero mod wheel). I haven't been able to figure out what it is doing or why it is doing it. I have disabled automap (quit the program and it still does it). I am in the process of trying to rebuild the concert in mainstage and start at a very basic level.
Also, Automap doesn't recognize the Apple instruments and plug-ins. It only recognizes the third party stuff (Ivory, Minimoog V, etc). Given that I am thinking I am going to disable Automap all the time when running Mainstage.

  • Novation Remote Zero

    Hi People,
Are there any remote zero users who can help me? I use the universal template, which initially allowed me to page through banks of audio tracks, audio instruments etc fine (banks of 8 on the display) but now, depending on the song I open it only allows me to page through a few screens e.g. audio channels 1-16, not all channels as before.
Anybody know of a solution? Any advice much appreciated as I live in Brazil where there is hardly and mac support. Everyone here uses PC!
    Thanks in advance
    Ben

  • Automation - Novation Remote SL

Today I was attempting to use my SL to complete some mute automation on several songs and during the process of muting the tracks Logic would then unmute the track after about a bar passing. I would then have to go back and adjust the end point of the automation data. Can someone tell me what's going wrong? Do I need to change a setting?

Im using the compact Sl 49 with Logic 8.0.2 on a macbook and with automap 2.0.
I get automap features with all of Logics plug-ins, and with all of my third party plugs.
I didnt have any troubles setting it up and i can get automap on all of the logic instruments that ive tried so far. Also on all 3rd party plugs ive used in Logic.
I will say that after you open and close logic a couple times youll need to power down the Controller and re-scan within logic for the parameters to show appropriately. Seems like a firmware issue with the novation to me. Maybe somthing within Automap itself.
Not sure why you guys might be having troubles maybe most fo them have been addressed with the automap 2.0 i never tried it with the automap 1.0 software.

  • Novation Remote SL Setup Problems

I have tried for the past two days to get the automap to work in Logic Pro 7.2.1. I have searched the information listed in the past and now I need advice on how to get things to work properly.
    1. Installed the Mac Setup Driver.
    2. Installed the Logic Drivers.
    3. Updated to the latest drivers from Novation.
    4. Set up the surface control in Logic.
When I open logic I think that the Novation is autodetecting Logic, however the screen stays blank when I open any synth.
    Sean

Small step for me. I got the control surface to work! Did you get that far? If not, go to the control surface set up and set the incoming midi to Port 1. I hope that I can get the automap going next!

  • Novation remote sl issue.  cant assign record buttons

I have a Novation 61 sl. I'm trying to assign the record, play/stop, buttons for the loopback in mainstage 2. I've tried going to layout and pressing the learn button, but it wont learn it. The only buttons that seem to work are the reverse and undo.
Anybody has any idea what's going on? I can't figure it out.

I am having the same problem. Also, I have a few knobs that don't really work right... and the screen wont read the presets i program in.
I have been having a problem with automap where i try to load the plugin manager and it just crashes. I have heard of a few people online getting novation to send them a beta version that solves this...
if any of you have this plugin please send it to me at [email protected]
