Novice Administration: MTA & MSCE Training

I think I asked this in the wrong place, so I hope this is appropriate here.
I am rather advanced with general computing (building from scratch, fixing, OS 95-current), moderate level with networking (new home networks, wireless, bridging networks), and have been administrating/tweaking (but did not deploy) a network consisting of
Server 2003, three dozen computers running enterprise-deployed software, etc.
I've had no official server training, and while I understand the gist and can add new computers via AD and do some light GPM, I figure out everything I need to know on my own through trial and error.
Our business is planning to make the upgrade from 2003 R2 to....whatever. I was thinking 2012 R2 seemed the most logical jump and have been trying to educate myself. I don't know if this is the right approach, but I thought getting some Microsoft Certifications
and then playing a demo of 2012 R2 in a virtual environment might be a good start.

I'm not sure how well these will prepare me, if they're worth my effort/time/resources to pursue (business will be paying for). Looking at the certification courses, all the books that Microsoft recommends get some pretty bad reviews from people who have
gone before me.
I generally would like some guidance on what would best prepare me or what I should do in general, as I have no clue :)

There are lots and lots of resources out there. You can read TechNet library on any topic. Microsoft Virtual Academy presents a lot of basic information. Hands on working through various labs is helpful. Most likely you should get
a good study guide for the tests you want to pass and then work through them.

We have requirement to modify Advanced Security Settings (Audit Settings for folders) on windows 2008. I am looking for a command which does this job.
I know, using group policies I can do this; in fact I had done this using group policies. However, I need to do this on number of servers which are not in domain. There are around 15 folders on which I need to enable Auditing; manual editing folder advanced
permissions is a cumbersome job. Hence, I am looking for a command line options.
I need to know how command can be utilised to enable Audit option on a folder. Please share a command which can do this; once I get the command, I will create a batch file for other necessary folders. (BTW, this is not a scripting question, I just need to
know the command hence, please do not re-direct me to scripting forum)

Using JavaScript to create reports listing security settings

Hi...I'm trying to create an Acrobat 8 batch process using a JavaScript that creates a log/report that lists the security settings for each PDF in a directory. I want to be able to periodically run this script so that I can ensure that (a)each file uses the departmental permissions password and (b) that the set of permissions (copying not allowed etc.) are set according to our standard.
I've looked at the JavaScript reference etc. but am seriously confused. There's a securityhandler object but how can I use that (or something else) to get a list of the doc's security permissions and to check that password x has been used?

Error 1935 Upgrading from BO XI 2.0 to BO XI 3.1

Hello,
I'm new with the Business Objects environment, just had the Administration and Security training.
I was given the mandate to upgrade our BO XI 2.0 to BO XI 3.1
BO test server runs on Windows 2003 SP2
When upgrading the server with version 3.1, I'm receiving the following error message:
Error 1935. An error occurred during the installation of assembly component {5617BF49-9195-4C35-B9AD-F8D165DE25BB}. HRESULT: 0x800700B7. assembly interface: IAssemblyCacheItem, function: Commit assembly name: Microsoft.MSXML2R...
Note: Prior to installation, I have disabled the antivirus software.
Any idea what could possibly the problem?

I finally went with a brand new fresh install on a different server. Also decided to go with a Windows 2003 64 bits version. Some surprises but now working.

Service Manager Setup - Blank SSP (with pictures)

I have done all of the recommended fixes for this and it still doesn't work. All I get is a blank screen. No access denied messages or anything. I am not an IIS guru by any means. Before I tell my CIO Service Manager is going to be

Performance of XSLT

We have an HTML page which user will use to get information. At the click of submit information is queried from 2 systems which is in XML format. This information is then merged into one before sending it back to the client.
Couple of questions:
1. My question, is it advisable to use XSLT for such kind of real time environment. I am not sure of the performance, if it's going to overload CPU, memory etc.
2. What are the basic guidelines for writing efficient XSLT transformation.
3. Is merging using XSLT slower than directly doing it in JAXB?

In my experience, the decision to use Java code vs. XSLT is based on a couple of factors:
1) Is what you want to do something that can be done in XSLT? XSLT is a very powerful tool but it is very quirky. It is very different from any other programming language I've used (and I have used a lot of them). So, the first test is "Can what I want to do be done easily in XSLT?"
2) Next, who will make changes? If this is code to be shipped to a client and they will need to make minor changes over a period of time, and you don't want them to change the Java code, or the person who will be responsible for making those changes is not a Java programmer, then XSLT may be a better way than having the transformative code in Java. Also, changes might be done by an administrator with some training in XSLT more easily than having to teach them Java + XML + WebServices + database + + + .
3) I've never heard of situations where XSLT caused stack overflows, or lengthy delays. That is not to say that you can be sloppy and XSLT will save you. XSLT does not have some "simple" constructs like mutable variables, or loops as in most for or while loops, one fallback is to use recursion. This can eat memory if not controlled and tested.
4) Any work to fine tune the speed of this operation will probably be overshadowed by bad code in other parts of the application.
I cannot think of anything that can be done in XSLT that cannot be done in Java code. There are many things that cannot be done in XSLT, however, that can be done in Java. Writing and debugging XSLT, especially the first 100,000 or so times is not simple for anything more complex than a textbook or tutorial exercise.
So, there are no hard and fast rules on which is better. Each is the right choice for a set of problems. You have not given us enough information to make that decision. I've tried to help with your decision.

2 table rows - one "Add Row" button

I am a novice, not alot of training with javascript.
I need 2 table rows added to a table without having multiple "add row" buttons. I would like to be able to add both rows with one button.
right now the button is set for the most current row:
Table1._Week.addInstance(0);
the row above is Table1._Codes
How do I script this in order to have both rows appear when the Add Row button is selected?

A couple of things without benefit of seeing the form.
Are the repeating rows called:
'Week' / 'Codes'?
OR
'_Week' / '_Codes'?
The underscore '_' is shorthand for instanceManager, which is used to call the addInstance. If I assure that the repeating rows are just 'Week' / 'Codes' then the following javascript in the click event of the button should work:
Table1._Week.addInstance(true);
Table1._Codes.addinstance(true);
This should add a row to each repeating row in one button.
Please note that the parameter for the addInstance is either 0 (false) or 1 (true), which relates to whether the row will be data merged with the form.

Modifying the Collaboration Meeting Room

Hello,
I am running EP 7.0 (Netweaver 2004s) SPS 9. I copied the meeting room template and created my own version. Then I took that meeting room template and used it to create a test meeting room.
My problem is that now that I have the room, I would like to personalize by putting some sort of graphic in it. I would like to do that in the iview that comes up at the top of the page that identifies the meeting room name. I cannot seem to find where/how to do that. Can I do that at the room level or do I have to do that at the room template level?
Any help would be appreciated as I am a novice without any formal training.

Perhaps, I need to clarify what I am trying to accomplish. I created a room template, then I created a room from that template. It is a meeting room. I am trying to figure out a way to change the roominformationextended iview so that I can include a customized image.
What is the way to do this?

How can I determin if adprep /domainprep /gpprep was run

I know that adprep /domainprep was run before adding the first 2008 R2 server but how do I determine if
adprep /domainprep /gpprep was run after that?

95 / 5 / 1 usage rule Viewer to Plus to Desktop

Russ Proudman wrote this in a Discoverer Discussion post recently:
"At many clients and presentations I strongly recommend the ol' 95 / 5 / 1 rule being that you have 95 users using Viewer, 5 users using Plus and maybe 1 with Desktop (and most likely that's the 1 with Admin as well)."
I am wondering, is this the standard rule for most places? If so, why this rule?
In my last workplace, we used the 5/95/1 rule where only a few used Viewer, most everyone used Plus, and administrators used Desktop. Why? Plus is a superior tool to Viewer. The search options, input parameter options (until 10.1.2.2), and sheet display options are superior to what is shown in Viewer (plus more reasons not listed here). The only users who accessed Viewer worked at remote locations - generally, their homes - where access to Plus was terribly slow.
Interestingly enough, at my current workplace, we follow your rule. I prefer the 5/95/1 rule. We are thinking of going to the 5/95/1 rule for 10.1.2.2 due to issues with linking from one worksheet to another using Managed Links. If we don't, we have to scrap our upgrade altogether. Oracle is not providing a solution for us at this time.

I can explain my thinking better with the following:
1. First of all, Disco Viewer takes less bandwidth and memory to run than Plus. You can search the forums for the amounts - as I can't remember - but as Plus is XML and Viewer is HTML the difference of info, packets, etc. going over the intranet at work is a consideration. And then, as mentioned, less memory required to use the Viewer version.
2. Here's my soapbox reason:
At so many clients I'm at the 'right' thing for management to say is that "our users are empowered" meaning that they want their end users to write their own reports, etc. Even if a middle layer to make things easier is installed (ie: NoetixViews, BIS Views), end users - even trained - do not use the product daily and therefore create literally hundreds of programs that are badly written, shared amongst their friends and perform 'dumb' queries when not needed (ie: having an index field but by ignorance causing the search to be a complete table search). They usually follow no standard and results are many times incorrect (ie: trying to cross orgs in Oracle Apps?, using multi-currency in Oracle Apps or regular DB tables?, etc.).
So when it's time to upgrade or a new IT manager comes along and tries to put a stop to the prevalence of reports such as "Marge Report - GL Budgets (do not use after Jan.2.2001", "Marge Report - GL Budgets (this is good but run only on Mondays)", etc. it become a large task.
So I've found over and over again that if a company has a few report writers - and of course, it depends on the company, but something like 5 would be good - who know SQL, who know Disco and have taken training, and use the product daily - then only they should use Plus to create the reports, and the other 94 / 95 out of 100 would only run the pre-existing, corporate made reports by these 5 and with the right combination of parameters, etc., a Viewer report should allow multiple ways of seeing the data (ie: by GL Date, by account, between a dollar amount, etc.).
And that just leaves the 1 or so to be the Admin and the same person who needs Desktop.
3. Having said all that, I've also found that many companies just don't treat Discoverer the same as something like Oracle Apps. If Oracle Apps is slow - they fix it with more hardware, setups, etc. and pay for a team of consultants to do so. If Discoverer is slow because the server has been set up wrong, they're running another large application on the Disco box, or users are writing 'slogging' reports ... then the answer usually is "Discoverer sucks ... let's try [A]" - where [A] seems to be the flavor of the day - ie: insert any of the following: Cognos Impromptu, Brio Query, Business Objects, Hyperion (well Oracle Hyperion now) ... and the new fav ... OBIEE.
So by having a good Disco administrator, some well trained, knowledgeable report writers and lotsa' end users running those pre-written reports ... that's where it all works.
4. One last thing - I realize that a company can roll out Disco Plus to all users and keep the 'power' of the end users low so they can only run pre-written reports as described above. This is okay as yes, Plus is more friendly and looks 'cooler' in my opinion. But then it's just the network and memory issue to watch out for. Most companies I've been at don't do this (only 1 to date) but it's a fairly reasonable request. The problem was they should start with just Viewer and see that end users are just happy to get the data. If they give them Plus first, then no one wants to feel 'down-graded' to Viewer later.
Hope that explains my opinion better. Although it sounds kinda' negative, it sure is what I seem to come across over and over again.

DCOM Error 10009

After renaming a Windows 2008 x86 SP 2 we now constantly see this error in the system log, DCOM is trying to connect to the old hostname, any ideas on how to resolve this?

OCA database???

I'm currently enrolled to oracle university. I have completed Oracle Database 11g: Administration Workshop I training and will start Oracle Database 11g: Administration Workshop II soon. I want to be certified OCA. According to the institution, I need only to do the following exam:
1Z0-052 Oracle Database 11g: Administration I
But in oracle website It clearly says that 2 exams are needed to become OCA, (1Z0-051Oracle Database 11g: SQL Fundamentals I or an exam similar to it).
Please help me understand. I'm in a total confusion. How many exams do it need to take to become OCA database administrator. Is the institution telling me the right thing about taking only one exam, after completing Oracle Database 11g: Administration Workshop I, to become OCA certified.
