Novice. Help with rendering. It won't save.

New at this so be kind. Using a Mac w/ Mavericks, PE 12. I'm rendering a 45 minute timeline. Takes about 4 hours (aargh!). Looks good, but then I save and either go to another project, or quit PE. When I start back up and open that same project, it hasn't saved my render. Antoher 4 hour wait. Why isn't it saving my rendered project?
Thanks,
Geno

To what are you referring when you mention rendering?
Are you referring to rendering the Timeline content to get the best possible preview of the Timeline content as it is playing back in the Edit Mode monitor? Or, are you using rendering to refer to export of your Timeline to a file saved to the computer hard drive or burned to disc?
From what you wrote it sounds like you are talking about rendering the Timeline content to get the best possible preview of what you have at the Edit stage. Four hours does sound a bit excessive for the process. But the process does depend on the complexity of the Timeline content and its duration. Some effects like Video Stabilizer can add many minutes to the rendering time in this case.
And, if we are talking about "rendering" for preview purposes, it is not uncommon to close the project with a rendered Timeline (green line over Timeline content) and reopened the project to find an orange line over the content, indicating need for rendering. This has been a long discussed and unanswered issue from time to time over many versions of the program. You will find that the preview files generated by the rendering process still exist in their hard drive save location, even though you are seeing that orange line.
My recommendation in cases like that is to move on if you have previewed those files previously. And, if you need a preview, then re-render either the whole or a selected segment of the Timeline. To do the selective rendering of the Timeline, set the gray tabs of the WorkArea Bar to span just the segment to be rendered.
Much of this is probably new to you and you may wonder what is that person talking about. If that is the case, please do not hesitate to ask for clarification, and I will rewrite until we communicate and you are comfortable with the information. We can go step by step or at whatever pace you prefer.
But, first we need to be in sync on what type of rendering is being addressed here.
Looking forward to your follow up.
Thanks.

  • Help with Rendering/Finalizing Project Please?

    Hi,
I am so new to this entire Adobe and video making that I've spent the last few hours pulling hair literally.  I am hoping that some of you experts can take some time to give this novice some much needed guidance.  Okay, I'm begging!
I recorded a wedding on a XHA1 MiniDV camera in 1080p 24fps.  Captured the clips to PP CS4 which in turn makes them MPEG, I believe.  Included in my project are addition clips imported from a Canon HF S21 also in 1080p 24fps and a Rebel T2i in ?? format.  Didn't use too many clips from the rebel.
Anyhow, my project settings in PP are:
Video -  Display format = Frames
Audio - Display format = Audio Samples
    Capture Format = HDV
All Scratch disks are saved on to my desktop with 284 GB
Here is a picture of the sequence settings:
Again, sorry for the ignorance and stupiditiy.  I am wondering what would help.
I am trying to burn it all with chapter markers and additional features to a DVD.
    - What would be the BEST settings for exporting to Encore?
    - Should I separate each section into a different sequence - would that help?  For example, the pre-ceremony to one sequence.  The ceremony to another.  The reception to another.    Or should I make new projects for each?
    - How can I make my computer faster?  Is it the memory, ram, etc?  What should I do?
Right now, it has failed over and over in rendering in After Effects.  It stops encoding when I export to AME.  It says 158 hours for rendering in PP.
    HELP!
I am using an iMac and here are computer specs (again, I am not even sure what to post to help you all help me):
      Model Name: iMac
      Model Identifier: iMac11,3
      Processor Name: Intel Core i7
      Processor Speed: 2.93 GHz
      Number Of Processors: 1
      Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per core): 256 KB
      L3 Cache: 8 MB
      Memory: 8 GB
      Processor Interconnect Speed: 4.8 GT/s
      Boot ROM Version: IM112.0057.B00
      SMC Version (system): 1.59f2
Here is a pic of what I'm working on.  I know the pic-in-pic feature probably doesn't help with rendering time either but 158 hours is killing me.  In fact, when I go to sleep, I wake up to an error message where PP has closed.

    leevang,
Your computer looks great.  I wouldn't be too worried about the time PP shows for encoding etc.
I have found that right when I first start to encode a project, 73 hours or 12 hours is normal. Rendering is not necessary for encoding.  However  when I look back later, the time has dropped greatly.
    Down to 2 or 3 hours.  that's when I follow Jeff B.'s suggestions when I do a  2X scan.......

  • HELP!! Captivate won't save

    Hi,
I've been working on a captivate project for 4.5 hours today
and saving (at least I thought I was saving) all morning. I've been
working locally and went to "Save As" to put the folder back on the
network. Before closing captivate I checked the file on the network
and noticed that it had yesterday's date still. I then checked the
file on my local machine and it was 8:57 AM (when I first saved the
file this AM). I tried Save As and giving the file a new name. The
title bar changes to the new name, but the file is not actually
written out. (E.G. save "C:\Temp\CaptivateProj1.cp" as
    "C:\Temp\CaptivateProj1BAK.cp - the CaptivateProjBAK.cp does not
actually write to the disk - only C:\Temp\CaptivateProj1.cp is
there, and that file doesn't update whe I click save)
When I try to close Captivate it asks if I want to save. I
click Yes, but the file doesn't actually save.
Captivate knows the file has changed, it knows if I use Save
As (The title bar changes) but it WON'T SAVE.
Any ideas on what is causing this? A workaround? At the
least, a way to export my work (Tried to FLA but Cap needs to save
    first.)
    Thanks for any help!
    Steven Lee

Hi Steven and welcome to our community
I would suggest you avoid mixing Captivate and the network
altogether. If you need to store something on the LAN, save it
locally and manually copy the saved file to the LAN location.
Captivate is known to have all sorts of issues when working with
    files on a network.
I can't help but to notice you mention saving to to a folder
with the name TEMP in it. If this is truly the location, have you
tried a different local location? Perhaps C:\Projects or some such?
I'm wondering if TEMP in the path would possibly confuse Captivate.
I suppose if worse comes to worst, you could try opening a
second instance of Captivate and creating a blank project with the
same dimensions. Then copy the slides from the seemingly errant
project to the new one. Then try saving.
Hope you get it sorted... Rick

  • T520 with dual monitors won't save resolution settings

I have a new T520 docked with a 4338 docking station.  I've connected 2 Lenovo L1940p LCD's to the dock using the 2 DVI ports.  In order to set the 2 LCD's to 1440 x 900 (their max resolution), I have to disconnect the 2 DVI cables from the dock and boot the T520.  Once the T520 is up, I reconnect the 2 LCD's and they work fine.  If I leave them connected during the bootup, I am not able to set them to 1440 x 900.  The max it will go at that point is 1366 x 768.  Even if I boot the laptop before docking and then dock it after it's up, I lose my max resolution until I reboot without the LCD's connected.  I have the NVIDIA NVS 4200m and the driver is up to date (according to Windows).  I am running Win7 Enterprise.  I also tried changing to discrete graphics in the BIOS with no luck.
Can anyone help with how to save this configuration so I don't have to go through this everyday?  Much Appreciated!!

At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, boot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
Though it might just be that you need to use Disk Utility to Fix Permissions, but I'd do the Applejack thing with any messed install.

  • I need help with rendering a video.

    PC specs: http://gyazo.com/8c5f268350b92762adc1f4229797eba5
Adobe After Effects info: Updated about an hour ago.
Video File info: http://gyazo.com/90a0b66c4dfa99d9d396eb561ac79a49 and http://gyazo.com/74ef689f606792b8a855e6e7d3c45396
Problem: I can't render the effects I added. The render time is over 300 hours.
Details: I got AE yesturday and I imported in a video that I already edited and rendered with Sony Vegas 12. I imported it into AE to add some 3D tracked text for the intro. I added all the text in and I'm ready to render. First try rendering I just get the same exact video I imported, no effects, no text, nothing different. The first render took about 19 minutes. Now the second time I tried changing the format that it would render to. I changed it to h.624 and got told it would take 434 hours to render, I waited about 5 minutes and that time never dropped. I stopped the render, looked online and was told restarting my computer might help. I restarted and tried to render this time in Quicktime, I got about 345 hours this time. Also I was only using 11% of 11.9gb of RAM according to AE.
The video does not have that many effects in it at all. It is simply 3D text tracked to an object for about 7 seconds. I also just need the intro to render so I can put it back together in Vegas 12. Everytime it does render I end up with the same exact video with no effects.
This is what I'm seeing right now: http://gyazo.com/f5fcc73636171c8213451288a507c2ae 14 hours to render a 10 second clip with only some 3D text. about 300 frames.

Thanks for posting the screenshots.  It really helps with assessing your problem.
You say "just some 3D text" but I presume this is extruded 3D text using the Ray Traced render option in After Effects.
Unfortunately, your AMD display card does not allow GPU acceleration of After Effects Ray Traced rendering, with the result that you will see ridiculous render times like those you are seeing.  The AE Ray Traced render engine is extremely slow without exactly the right display card - see the System Requirements here.
If you are using AE CC you may wish to explore the Cinema 4D integration with AE.
Otherwise, you can fake 3D extrusion by manually building a stack of identical layers in a precomp, or using a script that does the stacking for you.
You can also try third party 3D plugins like Zaxwerks 3D Invigorator, or Video Copilot Element 3D.

  • Need Help with iMac 350 - Won't boot - keyboard or mouse not working!

    Hello,
I've scoured the web looking for answers, and can't find any, so maybe someone here would be kind enough to help. I'm working on an imac 350 blueberry for my sister and I'm having all sorts of trouble.
She bought it last week, it started up (8.6 os) no problem. Powered up and down a few times, then all of a sudden, it won't boot. I'm currently getting blinking folder/happymac/question mark when trying to start up.
Here's the big problem - the keyboard and mouse do not work now. I've tried three different mice and three keyboards and no dice with any of them. I have the 8.6 CD from her previous imac (bondi), and I can hear it spinning, but there is no way to start up from cd.
I've also tried 2 other hard drives with the same results.
Tried resetting CUDA on logic board, taking out battery, no change. Bought new battery- no change.
I would love to at least get the keyboard working to see if I can even startup from cd, anyone have any clues on how to get it working? The strange thing is that the keyboard has a power on button, and it works to start the thing up, but dies when it tries to boot. Sometimes I just get a grey screen with the pointer icon, and I can move the pointer with the mouse for a second or two, then no response.
I appreciate any help or suggestions on locating the issues!
    Thank you!

When I said "but dies when it tries to boot" and "..then no response." I meant that the keyboard works to power up the computer, but won't work for anything else. So, I am figuring that the usb ports are supplying power to the keyboard and mouse, but the usb ports aren't relaying information from the keyboard or mouse.
How do you know the mouse isn't working? Won't you have to wait until later in the boot to tell?
The poweron key is a special case. I think that it works by lowering/changing the voltage on one of the usb cables. I read about this somewhere. Anyway, this function was eliminated from later usb keyboards and macs. Maybe a working power button doesn't mean what you think.
I would love to boot into open firmware
Could you try powering up from the machine? Is there a power button on the lower right of the machine?
Have you tried this key combo?
    commandoption+of
The letters are in lower case. Hold all down then poweron the machine. I'd poweron from the machine as apposed to the keyboard.
You could try another usb keyboard.
We actually did boot up the computer several times with it upside down. Not for any reason, except it's become a real PIA to flip it over every two minutes to start it, then take it apart and boot again. When booting either upside down or right side up it shows the same thing - blinking folder w/finder icon and question mark.
Yes, I agree. You could try removing the clear plastic around the bottom of the machine. At least you will not have to slide in the carriage. Note. The tv portion will still be surrounded by plastic! Don't remove the plastic around the tv!
Hope I am not interfering with Richard and his comments.
Richard: Is this the orginal keyboard? When did Apple get rid of the poweron key from the keyboard? My iMac 600 didn't have the key and my iMac 233 does.

  • Need serious help with rendering small files

Okay so I have adobe after effects cc 2014 watched and spent probably over 30 hours watching tutorials and trying to render videos and everything is 10gb plus i feel like this is a joke seeing as everyone else i know is rendering 200mb by doing exactly what im doing in the same program.
Wasting my time & money here and starting to lose my mind please can someone help!

    Basic Workflow
Watch the last video on rendering using the Adobe Media Encoder. That's the best tool to create a deliverable product. You can also use AME to create Digital Intermediates with production quality lossless or nearly lossless 10 bit or better codecs. Rendering is a very important part of making any video with any program and it's important that you at least understand the basics of Compression and MPEG (h.264) streams. The Vimeo or YouTube presets will work for just about any delivery system.
Type "rendering" in the Search Help field at the top right corner of After Effects and go through the resources you find there. I've been using AE since it was being developed by COSA and have been part of the development teams on plug-ins and even I use this new Search Help field all the time. Don't forget to use it.

  • Need help with rendering my files..."preparing video for display."

I don't know if I sent something to the trash folder from Final Cut, but for some reason all of my files in the timeline are unrendered, and every time I render them a message appears saying that it is "preparing video for display," and then they are unrendered again. What is this? Did I send something to the trash folder that keeps doing this? Is it a settings mode? Does it have to do with the space on my drives?

    I'm having the same problems.
A friend of mine told me to trash the render files and re-render my whole project. He finds it some times gets rid of some of the glitches when you render along the way in steps.
I trashed the render files and of course the project says I need to re-render which I do. I can save the project, close it, and when it opens I get the "preparing video for display". Once that's done it has nothing rendered at all.
So I re-render, and its fine. I tab to another window and then back and it gives me the same message, completes and all my stuff is un-rendered.
So now I have a project that every time I render it can't save it or somehow it deletes the render files if I tab out of the program.

  • Library gone, ipod freezes with sync, and won't save positions in videos

Wow. Three major issues with iTunes/my iPod in three days. Have I set some kind of a record here?
Well, first off... I went to charge my iPod with the usb cable as I always do. iTunes is configured to pop up and sync with the ipod each time it sees that the device is connected. All seemed well, until I saw a message telling me the library on my computer did not match the one on my iPod. Basically asked me if I wanted to wipe out the music/video collection on the iPod and replace it with, well, NOTHING which is what appears to be in my iTunes library right now. That's right, my library is all gone. No big deal, right? Just point iTunes back to my media folders! Not cool. I've pruned SO MANY horrible songs within itunes without deleting the actual song files. my iPod will be getting at least 250+ songs I do NOT want to bring to work, or on my commute. I don't have my library backed up. Why would I? This should not happen. I did nothing to cause it, there's no "iTunes virus" which wipes our your library, is there?
Next problem... This morning when I gave my iPod a quick charge before work... Hold switch on "hold," iTunes hadn't popped up during the 30 mins I left it in.. Guess what? The iPod is frozen. Reset it. This'll be the third or fourth time this has happened to me.
Lastly, I've noticed that the iPod simply WILL NOT save the position I was at before shutting down the iPod after a viewing "session." No, that's not true. It will revert to some random spot in the video I was watching, perhaps the first "bookmark" I'd made, the first time I'd quit in the middle of a video. Every time after that it won't continue where I'd left off, but rather at that first spot in the video. This isn't a problem for ALL of my videos, just some.
And a fourth bonus problem:: When am I going to be able to categorize my non-purchased videos properly? I complained about this like 2 months ago and iTunes still hasn't been "fixed." I'm limited to keeping non-purchased videos under "music videos" which is just stupid.
    Homemade   Windows XP Pro

First off, you have to search the system for your purchased songs. There usually in the My Music/iTunes/iTUnes Music/(Artist name)/(Album Name)
If you can not find them there then search the system by going to start button>Search and type in the search m4p for audio and m4v for video. more on this here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301749
Its true apple doesn't offer redownloads BUT alot of people including me, have had success in emailing the music store, telling them what has happened, and getting an offer to "Redownload" all the songs paid for
Far as the malware goes, you have some type of malware on the system, if you didn't ewido wouldn't of sent off an alarm with a sound and you wouldn't have been removeing things with it. malware comes in many forms, sometimes installed by that "Free" program you get off the net, sometimes installed in the background when you goto a certain site. In some cases simply rolling the mouse pointer over an ad on a web page (Which is easy to do when its beside the scroll bar to the right) will have it install. I have 3 different adware scanners and still get one or 2 that gets thru now and then

  • Need help with Replace Metadata then multiple Save script

I am attempting to create a javascript to run on a folder of PSDs. I need it to:
    1. Replace image Metadata with an existing Metadata Template called "UsageTerms".
    2. Play an existing Action "Prep_PrintRes". (The action sharpens and converts to 8-bit)
    3. Append "_PrintRes" to the filename. (ie OriginalPSDName_PrintRes.jpg)
    4. Save the file as a 12 Quality JPEG to specific folder on my hard drive, "D:/Transfer".
    5. Play an existing Action "Prep_Magazine" (The action resizes, sharpens, and converts to CMYK)
    6. Append "_Magazine" to the filename. (ie OriginalPSDName_Magazine.jpg)
    7. Save the file as a 10 Quality JPEG WITH NO EMBEDDED PROFILE to "D:/Transfer".
    8. Play an existing Action "Prep_Screen". (The action sizes, sharpens, and converts to sRGB)
    9. Append "_ScreenRes" to the filename (ie OriginalPSDName_ScreenRes.jpg)
    10. Save the file as an 8 Quality JPEG to "D:/Transfer"
If anyone is available to help me get started with this I would greatly appreciate it. I can do a minimal amount of Visual Basic but Javascript is alien to me. Thanks so much!

Try the following as the custom calculate script:
// Sum the field values, as numbers
    var sum = +getField("LaborCost").value;
    sum += +getField("MaterialCost").value;
    sum += +getField("EquipmentCost").value;
    // Set this field value
    event.value = sum > 0 ? sum : 0;
For the other one, change the last line to:
    event.value = sum < 0 ? sum : 0;

I'm new with AppleScript and would like to create a simple script that will take MEPG, AVI, and other video files and wrap them as an MOV file. • I need help with Time Machine - Won't back up properly

I'm new to Macs, my MBP is barely a month old, so bare with me.  I do understand computers pretty well and I've been trying like **** to read up and fix this on my own, but it's starting to tick me off.
Okay so I got a "WD My Passport" external HD for Xmas and my goal is to have Time Machine back everything up on it.  The problem started after a backup was halfway through and froze.  I thought wiping the Passport clean and starting over would do the trick, but it was tricky figuring out how to erase "Backup In Progess Files"
I read up on the "Disk Utility" stuff and partioned the Passport, which set it back to normal it seemed like.  So I tried the backup one more time, but again it froze a little less than half way through.
So now "Disk Utility" won't even let me erase the Passport or Partition it - it tries for about 10 minutes and eventually says it can't "unmount".  Yet when I enter Time Machine it shows that some files have been backed up in "Star Wars Mode", but it seems like that's only saved to the MBP itself?
Please correct me if I'm wrong with my logic, and any help is much appreciated.  I'll provide further input if it helps too, just let me know.

Sounds like a bad Passport may be the culprit. If Disk Utility can't erase or properly mount the drive, it may have serious problems.
I've used Passports for Time Machine with great success, but I've also had to replace 2 of them as they eventually went bad. Try another external hard drive and I'll bet it works.

  • Help with rendering

    Hi there!
I'm filming a rather lengthy project in AVCHD and after editing it in after effects am trying to find the best method to render it so that it stays at a small filesize but retains the quality.
So far the best i've found is using quicktime with the H264 codec...would there be a better way?
Sorry if i've "worded" anything weird as i'm quite new when it comes to AE

But what do you intend to do with those files that you're trying to fit onto a DVD?
Will you be uploading them to Vimeo?
Will you be showing them to a client for approval of colors? Timing? Quality of keying?
Will you be bringing them into another post-production tool for color keying? Adding titles?
Again, I recommend that you read/watch the items linked to from here:
"FAQ: What is the best format for rendering and exporting from After Effects?"
    > So what i'd be looking for is the best way to render these scenes to a small filesize but keep the quality almost untouched.
There is no such thing. If you want "untouched" quality, you will have large files. Knowing exactly what you need these files for will help us to recommend the right codec and such to make the necessary tradeoff between quality and file size.

  • Need Help With Rendering?

    Hello,
I'm brand new to FCE and have already ran into some major roadblocks...
I'm going big for my first project, I'm attempting to make a 2-3 split screen video. I followed the directions for importing as an XML from IMovie and when trying to play my clips back I got the 'unrendered' screen on the canvas, I then rendered everything. But every time I'd be playing it back it would drop and go back to unrendered? I then tried importing my clips as a Quicktime mov, but that did the same and takes about threes times as long to re-render every second it drops on me!
Please help me out here... my computer is strong enough, It's a newer IMac with OS X (10.5.6). I even upgraded my memory when buying FCE?
    Thanks in advance!
    Howard

Hello and welcome to the forum.
Your media must match your Sequence settings in FCE to avoid constant rendering. Your first order of business is to get your footage info FCE-native format. Then the split screen will be easy.
Open one of your clips in the QuickTime Player. Then look at the Movie Inspector (command/I). What does it say? Now what Easy Setup are you using in FCE?

  • I really need some help with rendering

I am creating a video for a client, and he is going to stream it through his own player. He requires the video to play using dimentions of 430 x 242.
He wants to keep the file sizes as small as possible.
I am currently creating his videos using a 1280 x 720 composition, as this is the same aspect ratio as his specific dimentions.
I am unsure of the best settings to use for the best quality. I've tried MOV but am getting files that are 600+ MB, and I'm also trying MPEG4 but getting blurry, washed out results that look nothing like the preview in AE. I've tried Flash and it stutters.
    My questions:
    1. Should I render in 1280 x 720 and just ask him to re-size them through his player? (I assume most players can do this?) or should I render to the dimensions of 430 x 242? He doesn't have too much knowledge of video.
    2. What is the best file format and settings?
    3. Is it possible to re-set the render option defaults? I've played around with all of the setting so much that I can't remember how each file format was set before I started this project. I've tried re-starting AE but it still leaves me with the same settings as when I closed it.
Every time I post a question like this I get people telling me to 'read the basics' or 'we get asked this time and time again etc'. Please note that I have a disability and am finding this very tough - if it isn't too much trouble I'd just appriciate someone giving the information so that I can learn in from here. It will need to be explained simply as yes I am fairly new to AE.
I just can't seem to find anything which works. MPEG4's are giving me a suitable file size but then look blurred and washed out.
    Many thanks for any help.

First question: What player is your client going to be using to play this? Everything depends on that. For example, if he's going to be playing the file using QuickTime Player, then the answer is pretty easy: create a QuickTime movie (.mov).

No, not if you've been told that he wants a 430x242 file. If you make a big movie (in terms of frame dimensions) and have him resize it, then you're going to create much larger files than necessary.

The QuickTime movie (.mov) format is just a container format. It can contain video encoded using any of a large number of codecs, with any of a range of quality settings. The default is a lossless compression (using the Animation codec) that creates perfect images at the expense of larger files.
After you've added your composition to the render queue, choose QuickTime as your format in the Output Module Settings dialog box and then click the Format Options button in the Output Module Settings dialog box. You can choose a compression type, set quality, et cetera. People seem to like the H.264 codec for a good balance of size and quality.
See "Encoding and compression options for movies" for more information.
