Novice here- how to keep my new macbook pro running smoothly

Hi, I am new to this forum and have recently purchased for first macbook pro 2011. As i am novice can anyone please advise any tips for keeping it running smoothly? For example I was advised to empty the caches folder in my library every so often, is this right?

There are a few things to do --
1) Disk Utility. Click on your disk and repair permissions. This is only if you notice some slight slowdown.
2) Clean out your hard drive. This is quite obvious, except few people stay on it. The smaller your HD, the more you should delete unnecessary items (like downloaded .dmg files that you used to install programs).
3) Treat it nicely. A hard drive won't spin if it's broken, and the better care you take of your computer, the easier it will be to notice when something's wrong. You can't hear the house creaking (nor would it matter) if the rest of the house is on fire.

How can I move all my emails and mailboxes from my Powerbook 10.4 to a new MacBook Pro running Lion?

I have an older PowerBook (OS X 10.4.x) and I need to move all my Mail (including mail I archived to folders) to a new Macbook Pro running Lion.
Can I just move the Mail directory (/Home/Library/Mail) and com.apple.mail.plist from the Powerbook to the MBP?
I noticed that the Mail directory structure on the MBP is different in Lion than the Mail directory structure on my PB OS X 10.4.
I didn't want to overwrite the Mail directory on the MBP and find out I corrupted Mail on the new MBP.
Any advise would be appreciated.

The safe "step 1," of course, is to keep an unaltered copy of the 10.4 Mail folder and plist so that if something bad happens on the new machine, you just throw out that folder and plist and try again.
The safe "step 2" is that instead of dragging the folder into the same place on the new Mac, you can copy it to a separate location, like a temporary folder in Documents, then in Apple Mail in your new Lion MBP, use File/Import Mailboxes. It will ask you where the mailboxes are, and after you point it to that folder, I'm assuming it will import and convert them to the new format and place them in the correct sub-folders. If it goes well, you can then delete the temporary copy that you made for import purposes.
The 10.4 plist might be too old since it's 3 major versions later; you can try putting it in the Preferences folder, but it seems safer to note all the settings in 10.4 and re-enter them from scratch.

something similar has been happening to me for a a couple weeks (even before the most recent update, but now is definitely worse) on my 2010 MacBook Air. Firefox freezes upon startup, and then freezes maybe every twenty minutes or so when I'm actively using it, staying frozen for at least a minute or two. it drives me crazy.

I have a new Macbook Pro running Mavericks and safari consistently freezes. It takes several 'return/enter' presses to get to the page I requested. I have seen other comments and replies on how to fix (clear cache, clear extensions/plug-ins), to no avail.

If it works in a new user account, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

How to migrate to new macbook pro

Hello.
I have two MBPs. I've cloned the older's HD onto a LaCie 1TB portable drive. So my question is this. What is the best way to transfer all my old "stuff", to the new Macbook Pro? I'd like to do it as easy as possible, so that I don't have to re-enter passwords for email, website, etc. I'd like all my settings to be exactly as they were on the old machine. Also, will my applications transfer as well?

Question on how networking works with new Macbook Pro

Hi,
I have a question about how networking works with my new Macbook Pro. This is my first laptop so am new to mobile computing. I am about to configure it to replace my desktop which uses a wired DSL connection. Once I have my Macbook Pro configured to run off the DSL modem, what happens when I take this computer to a location that has ethernet? Will just plugging in the ethernet cable be enough to get on line? Or is there further configuration work that needs to be done?
I used a Windows laptop from work and all I had to do was plug it in to a hotel ethernet cable to get on line. However, this laptop was never configured to run on my DSL network so I am not certain if that makes things more complicated.

Your MacBook Pro should just work when plugged into an ethernet connection.
Just check something, Open Network Preferences, you can select it from the Airport icon in the menu bar.
In the left-hand pane click on Ethernet and just check that it is set to configure using DHCP in the right-hand pane, that's it.
So when you plug in the ethernet cable it will ask the router for an IP address and off you go.
I assume that any system you plug into will use DHCP rather than static IP addresses. If it is a static IP address, you will need to manually configure the ethernet settings by inputting the IP address and subnet mask info plus DNS servers.
Usually it is done with DHCP and you don't have to do a thing and likewise your home DSL is DHCP?
If not then you will have to change your settings, make a 'Hotel' setting which you can use when in hotels and keep your 'Home' set-up for when you are at home. In the pull down menu select Edit Locations to add new ones.

How do I migrate files from my MacBook (specs below) to my still in the box MacBook Pro running OS 10.6? Yesterday, I ran Software Update; it returned the message that all my software was up to date / no updates available.
I am particularly concerned with moving the 7000+ photos in iPhoto. I have photos organized into folders and albums and want to preserve this structure. I use this photo data as part of my lecture content.

AppleMan...I have the same iMac you have...i-7 16GB with a SSD....just bought it second hand and it is about 1.5 years old....it was maxed out with upgrades when the original owner bought it. It was also restored back to factory settings prior to me taking possession.
I am making home movies in iMovie 11....max length 30 minutes or less. I am totally new to this editing. I am using HD footgage filmed from my Hero GoPro 3. I am finding that the movies that I am creating are skipping, staggering, hanging up etc...usually where I had transitions. I am certain I have enough power and memory in my iMac, so what's the issue? I read one of your other posts about optimizing each event or clip to 1080p? Is this what I need to do for every clip I import? Can I do this for all the clips at once on import? I also read that I may need to export the movie to quick time for smooth playback??
Any help you can provide would be appreciated!

Why is my new macbook pro running slow?

I bought a new macbook pro in october 2012. It has always run very fast without a problem.
Yesterday i noticed when i opened up apps the app symbol would bounce in the dock for a good 20 - 30 seconds and i would get the spinning beachball icon. I have repaired disk and disk permissions but this has not helped. I havnt downloaded any new apps or anything and my virus software says there is no virus.
Please help???????

I am also so dsappointed of buying macbook pro for the first time,and to think it was just almost a month ago....I am worried about the over heating issue,battery span that never lasprot that long as what the advertisement says...I really take extra care of this gadget because it is my first time having this so expenssive lappy...Ooohhh before I forget,my gadget is Macbook Pro 13 with memory of 8gb 1600 MHz DDR3..processor 2.9GHz Intel core I7...the only heave application tha I downloaded was the Mountain Lion I think ,and it was updated now from 10.8.1 - 10.8.2 ..maybe the next heavy app is the google chrome...and the rest is those apps that I bought from the Apple store that didnt cost me $10...before buying this unit ,I am using a lappy from Gateway with windows OS that runs slowly because of maybe being so old...lol I am using it for almost 3yrs because I only bought it from a junk shop alternately with Dell desktop thats so cheap,I only bought it almost $200 from a junkshop still.now after learning to fix and upgrade computers,I upgraded the DELL desktop from 1GB to 2GB,but I upraded my hardrive from 80gb to 1000gb...now I did test booting the 2,the desktop and this new Macbook Pro.my dell really boot so fast half more than this macbook pro...when I am downloading videos,really the Dell desktop have the fastest loading and downloading...I am not kidding and telling lies...I am so shock to know the real truth....I am sorry, but i is really true...But I promise my self to take care of this gadget because its my first time to have a genuinely brand new gadget and so expenssive...if no one believe this, i will upload a video on my youtube accnt just to prove that I am not telling a lie...oooh before I forget...just to prove that this gadget is geguine and new, here is the Serial Number of my Macbook Pro 13 which I posses almost a month now.. I am looking for a webcam that will plugin and work on my new MacBook Pro running Yosemite?

Just got my new MacBook pro and wanted to plug in my external Logitec Pro 4000 webcam...but it does not appear on any options to use.
So I guess its time to upgrade it... but I can't find ANYWHERE what webcams will plug and play on the MacBook Pro (3/2015 model) running the latest version of Yosemite (10.10.2)
I would LOVE to not have to buy a new camera...but i can't seem to find any other solution. So ideas?
