Novice Mac User (1st Mac) hellllllp!!!

i am trying to burn wmv files onto dvd... first i bought flip4mac so i can play them on qtime and they play; but when i try to encode these files on to dvd the process stops right b4 the burning starts... i tried to encode, than create a disk image so i might be able to disable the non-apple plug-ins (flip4mac) but again the process stopped.... i dont know what else to try! if someone can help it would be greatly appreciated!
iMac G5 20" 2.1ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Since you paid for it, you should have the Pro version of Flip4Mac. Basically, anything you can see and edit in iMovie, you can burn to DVD (see the Flip4Mac instructions to open the file in iMovie, if it is not intuitive). Open the .wmv file in iMovie and then open that movie in iDVD to burn.

Frustrated: Novice Illustrator User Needs HELP
    Hello All
I am a novice user of Illustrator [after you read my question it will probably be obvious] running Illustrator 14.0.0 (CS4) - on a MAC iMac running 10.4.11.  I am a small business owner and have to wear many hats and so I am forced to be my graphic designer by default - ha ha
PROBLEM - If I make a box using the RECTANGLE TOOL... The box should have a point at each Corner and the Middle of the box, as well as, in the Middle of each Side, and middle of Top and Bottom for a total of 9 anchor points...  but it only has 5... missing the 4 anchor points in the Middle of each Side, and middle of Top and Bottom. It is the same on Text Boxes too..  I can NOT find a setting to change this.... More, when running Illustrator on my MAC Laptop, It has all 9 anchors on the box...   I looked at Preferences etc... and matched everything to be the same but the problem is not fixed?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks-

Aw, c'mon James. Chill it a bit.
Yeah. You continually throw around your little personal jibes, and then if someone calls your bluff, you think you can back out of it with the old "can't you take a joke?" comeback.
In my previous work environment where everyone used Illie, Freehand was a word to be used cautiously – a bit like Macbeth in the theatre.
Well, I didn't work in your previous environment. And FreeHand specifically had nothing to do with this thread until you brought it up. Seems to me it's you who has a FreeHand chip on his shoulder.
I thought you knew my way of expressing myself better...
What, you think I keep a personality registry of regulars here or something? I'll tell you what I don't do: I don't engage in personal insults here. Yet your personal jibes are frequent enough for me to have grown weary of them.
I think I was not dismissing bounding boxes as useless...
Excuse me? "There's absolutely no need to use bounding boxes"?
You are probably right that bounding boxes came with Illie 9.
Probably before that. But I can personally recall that the current-selection bounding box was present in AI9. Unlike some, I try to avoid making claims that I can't immediately substantiate.
I hopped straight from 6 to 9 and that was the first time I had seen them outside of Freewotever.
I'm not familiar with "Freewotever." But if you're again trying to be funny, you are also again revealing your near complete unfamiliarity with it. FreeHand is not the program that continually cluttered the interface with bounding boxes. In fact, for many years that is exactly one of the distractions FreeHand users complained about re Illustrator.
First off, FreeHand's interface doesn't display bounding boxes. It displays only bounding box handles (four dots) on non-basic constructs like clipping paths. (Somewehere around FH 9, it implemented the optional Transform Handles, but that's another thing.) In the cases of rectangles and ellipses, FreeHand doesn't display Bounding Boxes per se. Working in FreeHand has always provided more functionality with much less visual clutter (and tool glut) than Illustrator's defaults.
The difference is that FreeHand has always provided proper live geometric shape primitives--something which Illustrator still doesn't provide, even though it's one of the most basic of all vector drawing interface expectations, being present in just about any vector drawing program on the planet--except Illustrator. That point of confusion is common among those who are experienced only with Illustrator's chronically outdated and archaic interface.
Quite to the contrary, a rectangle drawn in a program that does provide basic live primitives doesn't need a bounding box to perform the bare-bones basic manipulation exemplified, because you can change the aspect ratio of it (and corner radius) anytime you want, regardless of its rotation. You can do this not only in FreeHand, but Canvas, Inkscape, Xara Designer, and even in just about any basic drawing module of just about any "works" or "office" bundle. It's just Illustrator that still fails to provide live shape primitives, and therefore needs a rotated bounding box to provide a very limited subset of such common functionality. You draw a rectangle (or any other geometric primitive) in Illustrator, and all you get is a dumb path. So Illustrator actually needs bounding boxes more than other programs, because of its anemic core funciton set and its hideous user interface.
But of course, someone who is familiar only with Illustrator wouldn't know that. Which is fine...so long as they don't spew derision at programs they know next to nothing about (and users of such programs).
...bearing in mind that I have been at this job since the days of Rotring pens with nosebleeds.
So? I was using Rapidographs and constructing compound rotation in isometric on the board for about a decade before I came to prefer Staedtler pens because I found them less prone to clog. What does that have to do with anything?
Obviously newcomers should be encouraged to use new features, but preferably not before they have grasped the basics thoroughly. How basic bounding boxes are is perhaps a moot point.
Nonsense. Other self-proclaimed "experts" in Illustrator would no doubt argue that bounding boxes were added for the benefit of "beginners." Again, this is not a "new feature." And yes, it is bare-bones basic; just implemented in a half-baked manner in Illustrator.
As for step 3 you are right, but if you turn off the preview you can use the pixels on the paths for alignment,
Egads. That's really grasping at straws, Steve.
    ...Or use bounding boxes.
    Or use bounding boxes.
    JET

  • As a novice computer user, I wonder why I'm often getting "white-out" (program/app I'm working in goes totally blank onscreen). If it makes a difference, I'm working 99% of the time on battery, not AC, power. What causes this?

As a novice computer user, I wonder why I'm often getting "white-out" (program/app/site I'm working in goes totally blank onscreen). This is when I'm Internet online. If it makes a difference, I'm working 99% of the time on battery, not AC, power. Some of the possibilities I'm guessing are: glitches in my Verizon FiOS Wi-Fi providership?; staying too long on a site that's waiting for me to finish and "Submit"?; computer hardware prob (yikes, I hope not! It's brand new). Any ideas out there?

When this 'white-out' occurs, is the display 100% white with no error message and no menu bar?
Does this occur when you are using Wi Fi or connected to the Internet via the Ethernet cable?
    Ciao.

  • Help for a novice mac user

O.K. I've been a very satisfied Mac user since I switched from a PC last February, so much in fact, that even though my iMac 24" 3.06 is only 9 months old, I'll be getting a new i7 quad. My question is this: I now have an iTunes account on my mac and my wife has her account on her PC. I'll be giving her my old (if 9 months is old....) mac and was wondering how the itunes accounts will be transferred? When I open iTunes on my new mac will it recognize my old account and how will my wife go about getting her account from her PC to a mac that previously had my account on it.
Sorry to appear so stupid, but hey..I'm new....lol

The account is just a sign on. She would simply sign on to her account.
The music is a different thing. The itunes store does not keep a copy of your music for you online.
You buy ONE download, then it is your responsibility to backup your music. You should both have your music backed up. You can use this backup to move the music to the new machine.
Migration assistant (comes with every Mac) on your new mac will do this for you -from the old mac to the new one.
Your wife will have to copy her music from the pc and then move it to her new Mac.

  • Novice apple user needs help with iCloud

    Can anyone help?
I have uploaded iCloud app onto my mac and iPad 2 but I don't think it is working correctly as I don't seem to be able to access any documents, photo's etc via the cloud.
The app seems to be set up correctly on both devices but something is not quite right.
When in my mac I goto system settings and select iCloud icon and then click on the question mark in the bottom left hand corner and I get the following message
Content not available because your computer is not connected to the Internet.
Well I know it is as I can view webpages on both iPad 2 and mac.
    Any suggestions?

    its not a specific app.
currently, document syncing only works with iOS iWork. Open settings on the ipad and scroll down to the iwork app and turn iCloud on.
Photo syncing is called photo stream. open settings on ipad and click photos and turn photostream on. on mac open iphoto and click photostream

  • Help me to sort out the strings.(novice java user)

    Hi,
I was wondering if someone can help me out of this problem.
    My program :
-> it has to create an array of strings.
-> then create an aray of integers.
-> then if there are similar strings then i need to group them under the same name and display the output.
for example if the input is like try, try, hard, mad, try for strings and the corresponing int values are 1,2,3,4,5 .... then.... i need to giv ethe o/p as try = 8
    hard = 3
    mad = g.

I don't post here often, but I attempted to solve your problem. I noticed you weren't using any Maps (assumed you didn't know what they were)
I would probably recommend using Maps for a problem like this, but I attempted it by glancing at your code and trying to understand what you were doing.

  • Novice LabView user query - LONG

    Hi
I've only been using LabView for a couple of months and need to use it to
remotely control an instrument. The instrument is capable of running stand
alone and is operated via a menu system. The menu is displayed in an LCD
panel with menu labels sitting above several push buttons. The menus are
accessed using push buttons with the labels (and hence functions) above
each push button changing according to which sub menu is displayed in the
LCD panel ie when you press one of the buttons a sub menu executes which
means that subsequent presses of the same button control different
instrument parameters. (Its a very common solution found wherever space
limits both the display size and numbers of buttons)
I want to use LabView to remotely control the instrument and I thought it
would be best done by emulating the stand alone type of menu operation.
This would make the remote control software intuitive to users already
familiar with the instrument. I realise that by trying to emulate the menu
system I am constraining the usability of the control software with the
same constraints which exist in the menu/push button mode of the stand
alone instrument, but to be honest there isn't much more functionality to
    be gained.
I've tried all sorts of things but have so far been unable to figure out
how to do the menu/push button type interface using LabView. I tried to
write a VI which has a single boolean control (switch until released
mechanical action, the type which mimics the stand alone mode) which
increments a digital indicator by +1 with each press, whilst still running
the VI. I thought that if I could achieve this then I could do what I
wanted to do using LabView. But I've not been able to do this simple
    thing!
Can anyone help with this very basic query, or point me to a more
appropriate newsgroup/forum. I am not a programmer and only have
experience of using LabView on a very basic level, so please bear this in
    mind when offering help.
Many thanks in advance, all advice gratefully received.
    Cheers

    Bill,
Here is the way I would approach this. Hopefully I can describe it
    meaningfully.
Start will a top level VI that recreates the main menu with the buttons and
    text
as seen on the instrument. Save this VI (ie as Main.vi) and then save another
    copy with a name
that relates to ONE of the buttons on Main.vi (for instance if a button is
    labeled Setup, then save the
second vi as Setup.vi. Change the buttons, labels , etc to match the menu
    appearance of this sub-menu.
On Main.vI have the button labeled Setup call the VI Setup.vi. You may also
    want to have a button
labeled back or quit or similar to get back to Main.vi. If you follow this
    apporoach what you will have
is a number of VIs each mimicing the appreance of the LCD after the related
    button is pressed.
When all this is done you can go to each VI and have it send the appropriate
    commands to the instrument.
This may seem like more work, but it is much easier to modify / maintain.
If you would like a small example let me know and I will e-mail you one.
Also check the examples (espcially the Dynamic load example) these
should give you some idea about how to implement the windowing system.

  • As a novice Firefox user, I can't see how I can quickly access my favorites as I used to in IE8. How do I do it?

I used to be able to click an icon and slect what I had stored as a favorite, but it seems clumsy to use the Boomraks command. Is there an esier way?

Thank you very much, TonyE. The article you've pointed me at looks as though it will answer all my questions. The View Sidebar was a key element of what I wanted.
I did try searching for info before I posted and also looked at FAqs etc, but without success. Thanks again.

  • Novice LV user operating error codes

Test programs that were written by customer using LV 7.1 and when PC crashed, I am now unable to get test application to run with newer LV version demo.
Error message states that program cannot find GPIB even though card is working correctly and finds instruments on the buss using Measurement and Automation Explorer tool.
Tried to load what I thought was a patch for 7.1 to be used for later versions but did not help.

    Hello Ben,
Forgive my ignorance, but is VISA a separate application or is it supposed to launch when LV is opened?
There is a VISA read me folder.
When originally trying to launch the customer application, the following error messages appeared:
    "Constant changed to hidden control"
LV changed a constant that was wired to a case structure to a hidden control to maintain compatibility with LV 7.1 and earlier.
This message was removed when profile was resaved upon the closing of the LV program.
Second message is Dependency loaded from new path that does not go away.
Error message when trying to execute program is:
    Error 0 @ GPIB write VI pwrsys_cal.vi

  • Is Apex 4.2 safe to upgrade to for the novice/moderate user?

    Hi all,
I see that 4.2 is in production. I'm running 4.1. Is it easy/safe to upgrade to 4.2? My platform is Windows 7 and Oracle 11g xe. I'm no DBA and I prefer to avoid quicksand. Perhaps those of you who have already been down the path can advise me about this.
    Thanks,
    Kim

    Kim,
I've upgraded a number of instances without any issues.
Why not consider using VirtualBox or some other form of VM? This way, you can create a snapshot before upgrading, and if something goes awry, you can easily roll back to just before the upgrade. I use this feature all of the time (as recently as yesterday) with VMWare, as it makes any types of upgrades almost fool-proof, in the sense that you can get back to where you were before easily.
    Thanks,

  • Novice Aiport user

I currently use an airport express to allow my daughter and I to share an internet connection and for shared printing. I want to extend the range to cover my entire home. What is the best way to do this.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
in my opinion, it will be by acquiring an wireless router that will broadcast your signal instead of using your computer ressource.
you can then plug your dsl or cable modem directly into the wireless router (as an airport express, airport extrem or any other router brand). by locating the wireless router in a central area of your house, you signal should be accessible anywhere in it.
given said that, depending of the size of your home, walls material, possible interference; the coverage of the router could no be garentee. but usually, by strategically choose its location, you should be able to have a pretty decent coverage.

  • New Mac user trying to connect my IPOD mini

I'm a novice Mac user, so this may be a dumb question. I had a PC and that is what I used my IPOD mini with. My hard drive crashed taking my ITunes library with it. I have it all on my mini and was told a way to upload back into my hard drive. But, when I connect my IPOD to the Mac it says it doesn't recognize non-Mac versions. Does anyone know if there is still a way to make this work?
    Thanks!

iPodRip, a 3rd party app can do this for you. You can download it from versiontracker.com.

  • Is it possible to send messg. to other emails (aol) other than mac. users?

    Hi.
I'm a novice mac. user and if it's possible to send messeges (yahoo, aol.etc.) other than mac. users using the Mail? If it's possible I need help--if possible, step by step, to set up my Mail. I appreciate it if you can help me.
    Thank you.

    Hello Louise.
Yes it is possible but if you have a free Yahoo account, Yahoo prevents accessing a free Yahoo account with any email client like the Mail.app for U.S. residents. If you have a paid Yahoo account which I believe costs only $20/year, you can access the account with the Mail.app and the account settings to set up the account in Mail are provided at Yahoo's website.
If you have an AOL email account, check Accessing the AOL Mail System using IMAP & Authenticated SMTP An Unofficial Guide and if you are currently using the AOL program to access your AOL account, you can use the AOL Service Assistant.

  • Help for using camera raw in PSE 8/Bridge for Mac for the Canon 7D

Recently purchasing the Canon 7D, taking a few test photos in Raw, then trying to use Camera Raw in PSE8/Bridge for Mac is a problem.  I cannot figure it out.  Can anyone help this frustrated, novice computer user?

You need to update the camera raw plug-in for bridge and PSE 8 separately (they use two different copies). In Bridge, just go to Help>Updates which will install, I think, ACR 5.7, which  works with your camera. (You can't update bridge beyond that version).
For PSE 8, go here, download the latest version and follow the instructions in the readme file.
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=40&platform=Macintosh
Note that the directions may tell you that you can overwrite the old plug-in. That isn't true--you must remove it before putting the new one in there.

  • Can't Post to .MAC

When I click "Publish to .Mac" all I receive is a drop down telling me to sign into my .Mac Account. Once I sign in then all I receive is a drop down telling me about my account. I have read just about everything I can get my hands on. I am absolutely a novice Mac user having used Microsoft forever. All I want to do is to post my web pages. Will appreciate any help. Thanks very much.

Hello everyone who responded to my plea for help. The issue has been resolved. Apple was most helpful. They ensured my issue was directed to the correct department [Applications]. By the time the issue was resolved I had spoken to only two people within the department. Each Apple technician was very knowledgeable and most patient. The problem was in my .Mac account setup. I was using my .mac.com eamil address rather than my Apple name to sign in to my .Mac account. As a result when I went to publish to the Web the IDisk storage was not being populated. As they say live and learn. In any event thank you all for taking the time to help.
