Novice to wifi - what is required to connect to Internet?

I am thinking about buying an ITouch and don't know much about wireless. I live in an area where I have to use wireless broadband or dial up to get to the internet so am not too familiar with it.
- Do I need some type of ISP to connect the internet on the ITouch?
- I use an IMAC. Do I need to set up a wireless network at home to use the ITouch with it?
- What else do I need to know? I looked for apple information on this topic but couldn't find it.
- I want to know this before I go to the Apple store because the people there generally don't know anything. When I ask them questions they usually say something like "it's automatic", "It's seamless" and it never is.

At home you would need to set up a wireless router to your ISP. On the road you would access using a open public access point. These can be found at coffee shops, Airports etc. Usually coffee shops that have them will give you an access password if needed.
If you have troubles, try using this...

Since the MacBook Pro currently works, you should put it next to the iMac and compare the network settings for AirPort in System Preferences Network pane Advanced. Also, if you want to start off with the default network settings, you can use Location drop down menu and select +Edit Locations+. Then click the plus sign to create a new location. Set up that new location.
On System Preferences Network pane, AirPort should appear at the top of the list (in the sidebar). To change the service order, click on the gear icon and select +Set Service Order+.
Some additional tests you can try, on top of seeing if it works with (1) WEP security disabled and (2) a direct wired connection to the router.
If you get it to work with either (1) or (2), be sure to run Software Update at least two times to apply any recent updates from Apple. See if that makes any difference to using AirPort with WEP back on.
    (3) Start up in Safe Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
I don't know if any third-party software has been installed on the iMac at this point, but Safe Mode will start up with only the essential Apple extensions and processes running. See if it works any better in Safe Mode.
    (4) Create a new admin user account in System Preferences Accounts pane
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8235.html
Log out and log in to the new account. Try connecting with AirPort in the new account.
    (5) Connect the MacBook Pro to the router with a wired Ethernet connection. Make sure its Internet access works. On System Preferences Sharing pane, set it up for +Internet Sharing+ so that it is set to +Share your connection from Ethernet - To computers using AirPort+. On the iMac, try to connect to that wireless network and access the Internet.
That last one (5) may be a good one to try first. It would at least show that the iMac's AirPort is working - you can even set it up to use WEP. If you have any questions about using the +Internal Sharing+ feature, please ask.

  • Wifi handoff issue and "not connected to internet"

I have a house with a wireless router and a boathouse with a wireless repeater. DHCP from main router. When connected to "main", i can connect to internet to browse, mail etc. When I walk down to the pier, the stronger signal from the boathouse is not picked up, so I have to manually switch to the boathouse signal. Then when I try to browse, I get a pop up that says that safari is not connected to internet. Even though the wifi symbol is displayed, and in settings it indicates that I have switched to the new ssid. This never happened with my 3gs. Very annoying. Anyone experiencing this problem when they are in the proximity to 2 wifi signals?

Sofar I have found (off internet),
A)that if you go into sleep mode, the wifi shuts down or powers down.
B)sleep mode must be disabled in order for wifi to continue.
C)you can check this by going into wifi and seeing the iphone every 20 seconds or so looking.
D)as far as handoff ,I still not to sure but I think BOOTH units must overlap each other in order to handoff from 1 to the other.
Show much bs on the web that I have to filter the pages and there not enough time in the day to go thru it all.

  • Im connected to my home-wifi but it's not connected to internet?

I updated my both iPhones and ipad2 a few weeks ago to the newest version of ios 5.01,  but yesterday My iPad lost the connection to internet, but i'm connected to My home WIFI, i have checked all of my other units, such as computer, both iPhones, my smart tv, and they all work fine.
I have also tried to connect through static by manually type in ip, router etc with no success :(
    Can anybody help me?
    Thanks in advance
    Regards
    Sebastian T

Each IP address on your local network must be unique.
You might be able to enter static information but if DHCP is being used then you must use IP addresses that do not conflict with the IP addresses being used for DHCP.
I think that you need to find out why DHCP has stopped working on your router/modem.

  • What is required to connect T420s DisplayPort to DVI-D port? (Sony Trinitron)

    Hello.
My wife and I have recently been watching Netflix movies on our laptop when it occurred to me: why don't we watch this on our 36" screen?  So I went out and purchased a DisplayPort to DVI-D cable.  Hooked it all up, selected the appropriate input on the TV and... nothing.
I know that I need to choose the appropriate refresh rate and resolution.  My questions are:
    - Is there anything else that I am missing?
    - The NVidia Control Panel is not as intuitive as it could be.  How do I configure NVidia/Windows to enable the DisplayPort?
Any feedback you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
    CONTEXT
    - Laptop: T420s
    - Cable: DisplayPort to DVI-D (passive)
    - Operating System: Windows 7 (64 bit)
    - graphics chipsets: integrated INTEL chip, and discrete Nvidia NVS 4200M Optimus

    Hi Gamloi7.
Thank you for taking the time to reply to my posting.
    Config=>Display=>Graphics Card=Nvidia NVS 4200M
The T420s laptop has both an integrated GPU and a dedicated GPU.  I have tried using driving the display monitor using both... unfortunately it doesn't work.  All I see on the TV screen is black.
    TESTS PERFORMED
    - I have tried: Laptop (DisplayPort) >> to >> TV (DVI-D)... TV only displays a black screen
    - I have tried: Laptop (VGA) >> to >> TV (DVI-D)... TV only displays a black screen
    ADDITIONAL NOTES
    - Yes I have extended the desktop (via the Win+P shortcut).
    - For both test cases above, I disconnected the cable from the TV and connected it to my monitor to ensure that the signal was working... sure enough the monitor worked as expected
    - as I understand it the Sony Trinitron KV-36HS500 supports: 480p, 1080i, 720p
    - The following schematic is for the back of my TV. Do you happen to know if VGA or DisplayPort are compatible with any other standards?  For example... I don't suppose I can go from VGA or DisplayPort to S-Video ??

    Hi,
Remote connection from PC or laptop to server must use citrix or terminal service. You can also use VPN to access the citrix server. In the VPN, you  can use forticlient SSL VPN :
    http://portal.modeldriven.org/sites/default/files/SSL_VPN_Client_User_Guide.pdf
You must install ica client in your laptop before running the B1 from citrix. make sure that the user code to run B1 in the citrix must be registered in the citrix

  • Connected to wifi but can't stay connected to internet

I currently have a curve 9300, and my service provider is Telus Mobility. I am connected to wifi and up till about 3 days ago everything was working fine, now it shows I am connected, but I can only get on internet for about 5 mins, I have to shut off all my connections then reconnect them for it to work again. Any ideas as to the problem?

OK...then, with your WiFi radio OFF (e.g., solely running on your carrier data network), I suggest the following steps, in order, even if they seem redundant to what you have already tried (steps 1 and 2 each should result in a message coming to your BB...please wait for that before proceeding to the next step):
    1) Register HRT
KB00510 How to register a BlackBerry smartphone with the wireless network
Please wait for one "registration" message to arrive to your Messages app
    2) Resend Service Books
KB02830 Send the service books for the BlackBerry Internet Service
Please wait for "Activation" Messages, one per already configured email account, to arrive in your Messages. If you have no already configured email accounts, please wait 1 hour.
    3) Batt Pull Reboot
Anytime random strange behavior or sluggishness creeps in, the first thing to do is a battery pop reboot. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes. See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.
Hopefully that will get things going again for you!
If not, then I recommend that you attempt to boot into Safe Mode:
KB17877 How to start a BlackBerry smartphone in Safe Mode
It may take you multiple attempts to get the ESC key sequence (press/release/hold) correct, so be patient. When successfully into Safe Mode, does the behavior still present? If not, then think carefully...what happened just before this behavior started? A new app? An update? A Theme? Something else? Think carefully as the smallest change could be causal...and attempt to undo whatever that was.
If the behavior does still present in Safe Mode, then you may want to try this procedure to perhaps narrow down the precise causal item:
Load your OS "bare bones"...if anything is optional, do not install it.
If the behavior presents immediately, then try a different OS with step 1
If the behavior does not immediately present, then run for as long as it takes for you to be sure that the behavior will not present.
Add one thing -- no matter how tempting, just one.
If the behavior does not present immediately, then again run for long enough to be sure it will not have the same problem
Repeat steps 4 and 5 until all things are loaded or the behavior presents
When the behavior presents, you know the culprit...the last thing you loaded.
If the behavior does not re-present, then you know that either step 1 or 2 cured it.
If the behavior presents no matter what, then you likely have a hardware level issue for which no amount of OS or software can cure.
    Good luck!

  • No matter what, ATV2 won't connect to Internet through TC

I'm about to pull my hair out. My iMac and Blackbook connect to my wireless network through TC no problem, regardless of what I change in TC's setup (meaning changing the name of my network, channel, password, etc.). My new ATV2, however, connects apparently but cannot access the internet. I thought it may have something to do the ATV2 itself (faulty unit), but the same thing happens when I try to connect my HTC Evo to the network.
So I tried using a wired connection between the ATV2 and the TC. Same thing. Bad IP addresses, null values for router and domain, the works. Maybe use a crossover ethernet cable, as I understand ATV2 requires one...just didn't have one handy at the house.
Any ideas? I've read through numerous threads on this board, and I see where the "solution" is to reset the TC to factory settings, wait, then try again; other variations say to rename the network (done that).

You say a crossover cable is not required, but I thought it was. See this link... >http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2274?viewlocale=en_US
Hmm, the link can be a bit misleading. You are attempting to connect your aTV2 to a TC. Notice that this would only require a crossover cable if you were trying to connect an older Mac product directly to either model of the aTV.
I currently have both versions of the aTV; one connected to a Cisco Ethernet switch directly back to a Cisco router, and the other connected to one of the LAN ports on an 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn). In turn the AEBSn is configured as a bridge and connects back to the same Cisco router. In both cases, neither of my aTVs is having any issues getting an IP address over an Ethernet connection.
I have also verified that both can get an IP address via wireless to the AEBSn as well.
Yes, the TC is my only router, and it's in bridge mode on channel 11, using WPK Personal security.
If the TC is in bridge mode, both its NAT & DHCP services are disabled. That would mean another device (router or server) is providing these services for Internet access. What is the make & model of your Internet modem?

  • Wifi problems no IP, not connected to internet

I have some problems connecting to the internet via wi-fi.
First internet becomes very very slow for like couple of hours, so slow that it takes like 5 minutes to load a page... then at some point it just disconnects me from the internet. When im trying to connect back to it the connection times out and if i go to network preferences its written there that my mac doesnt have an IP adress and i wont be able to connect to the internet. Then after a while its shows that im connected again to my connection, but it just doesnt load any pages...
The strangest thing is that only my macbook is having this problem (it totally works on my notebook that i was using before i bought my mac, plus there are 3 more ppl using that connection and they dont have any problems).
First it happened like 2 weeks ago and i spent like hours trying to figure out what to do. In the end i just got really stressed and ****** and left my macbook for 2 days without even touching it.. after that i was thinking to bring it to the Mac shop so that they can help me to solve this problem and just to try, to make sure it still doesnt work i turned on my mac and it was working again without any problems! Until yesterday!! Was exactly the same script : mac got slow, then it disconnected from internet at all, then timing out the connection and no IP adress and finally, connected, but not loading any pages!!! Today all day long it switches between no ip and connected but not working. ITS REALLY FRUSTRATING!!! Im connected now using ethernet with cable, but its really not comfortable like that and i would love to solve this problem.. ANY IDEAS??

I have deployed a J2EE application in SAP WAS 7.0 and this aplication wants to access an application from internet.
I have set the proxy server details in Visual Admin -> Web Service Container -> setting.
The server is installed locally in my PC.
I am able to run the same java application in my command prompt wit the same proxy details and it is able to access the 3rd party application , but when I am trying to access through web application through SAP WAS I am getting 407 Proxy authentication required.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
it seems like your Proxy requires authentication (e.g. Basic authentication)
I am able to run the same java application in my command prompt wit the same proxy details and it is able to access the 3rd party application
Are you providing any credentials here in order to access the internet via Proxy?
What kind of Proxy are you using

  • IPhone 4s connected to home wifi but won't allow connection to internet etc...

We recently received a new modem from the cable/internet company and although the iPhones indicate they are connected to home wifi they won't connect to facebook, yahoo, google, update email. Basically we are using our data in our home with a working internet. The computers are working fine. I have spent a few hours with the cable company and the phone company trying to solve this issue. They both say it is an issue with the other party....we have not update to the new OS yet... could this be a setting issue within the phone not responding to the new modem? Should we try updating the phones OS?
my kids are running through their data...any advice would be helpful. I have already had to pay for the unsuccessful help of the cable company.

  • WiFi Direct to Officejet or connect to Internet, but not both

My PC is running Windows 7 Professional. I have  HP 7610 that includes the WiFi Direct feature allowing for a PC or other device to establish a WiFi connection to the printer without using a router. Pretty nice feature, however, the software setup establishes a separate "network" for the PC-to-printer connection from that used to connect to the Internet. So, in order to print I have to disconnect from the Internet and connect to the printer's network connection, then reverse that when done. It's akin to virtually plugging and unplugging phone lines!
I have attempted using Win 7's Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter via CMD line instructions, see  http://community.spiceworks.com/how_to/show/897-how-to-set-up-virtual-wifi-in-windows-7, and though that does enable the virtual WiFi connector and create a secure network connection to the printer, it does not seem to allow me to access the Internet and use the printer at the same time.
Any ideas, or am I stuck until a router enters the fray?

    This will work for you.
Connect wireless printer anywhere, convert from wired, bypass failed radio, add WPA2 security.
