Now that CC is out - Radeon 5770 or Quadro 4000 for Mac?

Been kicking the tires on Premiere CC and may switch the whole operation over to Adobe from FCP Legacy. I have both cards and was wondering which one to use for CC. I originally baught the Quadro for PP6 but felt the app wasn't ready yet. Looks like CC is more like FCP8 (Yay!) but now seems optimized for the Radeon 5770 as much as the Quadro. So any advantage to keeping the Quadro or just sell it?

You're not offering good choices here, so I'm going to introduce one and call it: "None of the Above".  Neither card is particularly good for one reason or another.  Very old generations of each GPU; there are much newer Mac-compatible cards available.  Look to the  Mac version of the GTX680 or the AMD 7950 if that's your thing.

  • I updated to Yosemite, now my laptop keyboard does not work in MS Word for Mac. Help!

I updated to Yosemite, now my laptop keyboard does not work in MS Word for Mac. Help! Any suggestions for fixing this?

Did you ever get a solution to your problem? Because I am having the same problem. I was actually in the middle of using Word when the keyboard stopped working. But it works in other apps, including in Excel.
Thing is that my laptop just got back from Apple for repairs and they replaced everything but the display - including the hard drive.
So not only do I have plenty of hard drive space, but it should be virus and error free otherwise.
I have only installed a few programs and redownloaded some of my files from places like Dropbox, but otherwise is essentially a new system.
Oh - and it came with Yosemite, so I did not upgrade to Yosemite and still Word doesn't work.
I've always had trouble getting Word to play nice with my Mac but that was also with the old, full hard drive.
This is a fresh install. And since I lost all my files, I only had like 1 old file I have downloaded from email and accessed and was in the process of
creating a new file when it crashed. I got no error, the keyboard just stopped working (to type). I also cannot even get Word > Preferences to even open,
    so it is completely unresponsive.
I did a Google search and under the Microsoft communities two suggestions to that person were that there may be multiple copies installed -
I have only the one - and that one is in the wrong place - again, I only have the one and it installed to the Hard drive (visible in Launchpad / Apps).
Another suggestion was that there was some problem with the updates. I ran updates and they installed fine. That helper suggested that the user
may have had different updates that worked for the other Office apps (Excel, PPT etc.) but not Word and that was at least part, if not all of his problem,
but all my Office apps show the same update version 12.3.6, so that cannot be the issue with me.
I've not yet tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but as I got no errors on the original install or updates, I'm not sure if that would fix it.
I've found that Mac just doesn't play nice with some programs at all.
And even though I have a factory installed version of Yosemite on a new, fresh hard drive, even when I booted up, my iPhoto app (which is empty) crashed. I am not sure if my iPhone or iPad was charging at the time, but I don't think so. iPhoto that I still have not even used has crashed several more times since, most notably when plugging in my iPhone / iPad to charge, namely when I declined to upload photos (by default) to DropBox. That may not be related at all, but thus far seems the only other problem I have encountered until this Word problem.
I'm on a MacBook Pro, Sept. 2009, running OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 factory installed from Apple repairs running Office: 2008 for Mac (Home and Student edition).
Please advise if you found a resolution and what it was.
    Thanks

  • Changed out Quadro 4000 for GTX 770 - no change in performance

I had to reformat and reinstall Windows 7 and my CC apps last week, and I'd been planning on changing out my nVidia Quadro 4000 for a GTX 770, mainly for the boost in CUDA cores, figuring from all that I've read over the years that there should be a boost in render and export performance in Premiere Pro.
Today I did the swap out. Just prior to pulling the Quadro, I noted the render time for a timeline that I was working on. I deleted all previews and cleaned the media cache, and rendered the timeline. which took 1:12. I also exported to a 720P(matching my sequence size) H.264 YouTube profile with Max Quality and Max Depth set. That took 5:28.
I installed the PNY GTX 770 4GB ('Enthusiast Edition', I must add), and performed the same tests. The results? No difference. At all. With all factors remaining the same, I'd assumed that the increase in CUDA cores would have boosted performance some, actually a lot.
Have I been misreading all of the advice both here and elsewhere on CUDA performance?

    Hi sebrame,
You probably would not notice much difference between the two GPUs because exporting is primarily a CPU intensive process. Please check out this blog post: http://blogs.adobe.com/premierepro/2011/02/cuda-mercury-playback-engine-and-adobe-premiere -pro.html
You may need to adjust your expectations.

  • ATI 5770 1GB Video Card For Mac Pro dvi hdmi cable

I am sending video signal over a 50FT HDMI To DVI from my Mac Pro (3,1) via ATI 5770 1GB Video Card For Mac Pro (5.0 GT/s) (181062917108) and I cannot get a constant signal to my TV. The signal stays on for a few seconds or several hours or my TV (Samsung) says there is no signal or I get just a gray static screen.
I never had a problem before with my previous video card the 512MB nVidia GeForce 8800GT with a 25ft long cable. Any ideas people?

A cable of about 5 meters (16 ft) can be manufactured to Category 1 specifications easily and inexpensively by using 28 AWG (0.081 mm²) conductors.[114] With better quality construction and materials, including 24 AWG (0.205 mm²) conductors, an HDMI cable can reach lengths of up to 15 meters (49 ft).[114]
    from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI
You may need a higher-quality cable or a lower resolution for your display to make this work without an HDMI Repeater.

  • Leopard now Unsupported by Apple now that Lion is out?

I see now on wikipedia that Leopard is now Unsupported by apple as of today but is it tru? i do not see on apple web page that they discontinued support for leopard they only used to have Security Updates Only and now that is for snow leopard http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_X_Leopard . they just put out iTunes 10.4 for leopard and safari 5.0.6 for leopard today i do not call that unsupported. What do you think??????? (This is a big thing for me because i do not have a intel mac and do not have the $ to get one right now my g5 is all i need)

Yes, that's important. G5s running Tiger or Leopard are still viable - most websites still function, and as long as you still keep things like iTunes (9 or 10) and Safari (4 or 5) up to date, things should be ok for you. The most important thing is that if your computer delivers what you need it to do, then why upgrade and incur horrendous software upgrade costs too?
I just looked on wikipedia again and now leopard is "security updates only" again the same with snow leopard. so there still is new security updates for Leopard and Snow Leopard and new apps for leopard just released today (Safari update and iTunes 10.4 for Leopard) so apple is still supporting Leopard and new apps for Leopard Just not 10.4 Tiger. only way i will believe when the time comes that Leopard is not supported is when apple says so on apple.com Like they did with OS X 10.4 Tiger. so Leopard is safe for now!!!

  • Is iPad 1 obsolete now that iso6 came out?

Now that ISO 6 came out, is the iPad 1 obsolete? Is there going to be more updates for it or is it stuck at 5.1.1?Will the apps still work in 6 months time?

I agree with the above poster. My partner and I have an iPad 1, but since we've upgraded it to iOS 5 and 6 respectively, all the apple apps (safari, iBooks, etc) would crash every 15 min.  And once you upgraded, Apple does not allow you to downgrade. So Apple has basically turned our original IPads into a brick in a matter of 2 years and here's nothing we can do to turn the iPad into the original factory setting. And now they want several hundreds more from me so I can continue to do what I had intended to do with the original iPad, which is to only browse the internet. Apple's business practice seems sketchy to me... I don't want to keep buying a new iPad every 2 years because the old one turned into a brick.  I was hopon there's be a class action lawsuit by now.  We're now left with considering other cheaper options, nexus 7 or kindle fire.

  • Now that CS5 is out can one still buy CS4?

Now that CS5 is for sale, can one still buy CS4 and how much would it be in the USA?

    Hello!
(This post I'm answering should belong to the Creative Suite forum)
When you purchase the Creative Suite production premium or master collection, it comes with CS4 versions of Premiere and After Effects.
"To ease the transition to a 64-bit operating system, CS5 Production Premium and CS5 Master Collection include a 32-bit support package. The package contains 32-bit versions of Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 and After Effects CS4."
from: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/825/cpsid_82595.html (note that it is not the case for the standalone products)
The production premium suite full version costs $1699 vs $1798 if you purchase the two separated. (and you get Photoshop extended, Illustrator, Flash, Soundbooth for free...)
Hey, it should be like the App store, I should get 30% of the sale ;D

  • How should I give itunes autonomy to my children now that they are in high school and have used my Mac and my itunes account to buy music for years, including all gift cards given to them. They now both have their own computers.

When my children were younger, and needed more help and oversight, I had them purchase songs with my permission, often with gift cards that they had been given on various occaisions. Now, however, they both have laptops, they would like to split out "their" music and books, sync their Itouches to their own system, and I would love to have 9000 less Taylor Swift songs stored on my hard drive. Also, it seems that I can't set up independent Itunes accounts for them without a credit card, however they both get gift cards several times a year. A suggestion for this? It must happen to a lot of families. Thanks.

Unfortunately you cannot split (nor merge) items purchased with an AppleID.  I am not clear on what you will have to do to allow them continued access to their music on your account.  Apple no longer has DRM protection in its music but then I also hear people have all kinds of authorization issues when trying to synch so it sounds like they still keep restrictions on what you can do with the music when trying to move it about.  I'll let somebody more experienced with syncing answer this part.  You may have to authorize their computers and devices to your AppleID to allow them all functionality with the music.
Ideally you would have set them up with their own AppleIDs years ago but...
Creating an iTunes Store, App Store, iBookstore, and Mac App Store account without a credit card - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2534 - only works for new accounts!

  • I bought Apple care for my iphone4 in Italy to have 2 years warranty, how many will be now that Antitrust Authority said they have to be 2 for everyone?3?

In all europe everyone wants to sell something technological has to give 2 years warranty on his product. When I bought my iPhone I bought also apple care because I didn't want only one year warranty. Now that Italian antitrust said they have to be two years for everyone, also for people didn't bought applecare, how many years of warranty will I have?Thank you

I have been reading and looking around about posts like this is and this is what has been stated many many times
The two year warranty (some places upto 6 years) of consumer goods is a law that is being misrepresented by some indeividuals and companies.
It is not correct to claim that european law mandates a two year hardware warranty.
A warranty such as Apple and other manufacturers provide, is not mandated.
However what is mandated, is that the seller (not the manufacturer) offers a form of product guarantee which assumes a fault within the first six month has been present from the date of purchase.
If the seller would object to such a claim from a consumer within the first six month, the seller would have to prove his case.
IE a failure within the first 6 months is covered by the seller. The seller is then to take it up with the manufacturer.
After six month and up to 24 month after the purchase, the consumer has to prove to the seller that the claimed defect has been present or inherit in the device from the date of purchase (out of the box).
Finally - A Guarantee is not a Warranty.
Bit crappy but when people start throwing the laws around, what it basically boils down to is this, you need to speak to who you bought the product from, NOT the manufacturer, unless you bought it from them directly.

  • Any updates on the ATI Radeon HD 5870 upgrade kit for Mac Pro 2009/2010?

    So,
while the card is shipping without delay in new BTO Mac Pro units, there still is no sign of the kit posted on on the online store months ago (day/date with current Mac Pro release). To date, the card hasn't shipped (to anyone - no 3rd party store has received it), Apple still shows 'currently unavailable' - without even an 'add to cart' button (like the Quadro 4000); and even AppleCare is in the dark (you'd assume they can send units for replacement. Yet, while they can be setup in the GSX system, there is apparently no 'cost' shipments available even from support).
I suppose not - but does anyone have any more insight into what's going on here? This looks suspiciously like this card is not going to see the light of day as an upgrade kit; for either 2010 or 2009 Mac Pro.....
    Cheers,
    Dan

    Ugh.
That rhymes with what we are seeing.
After about a week of there being an 'order' button for the 5870 (it remained 'currently unavailable' though), the 'add to cart' option has, today, disappeared again. I assume anyone who ordered the card during the window will not see the card, and there seem to have been no purchase confirmations (usually sent within 15 minutes of processing) sent to anyone who ordered.
All this, as well as you report, points to the 5870 being EOL; apparently only a contingent was made for the Mac Pro, and now even AppleCare is running down on inventory for replacements.
That begs the question; once inventory runs out - assuming it does - to even supply the Mac Pro BTO, there has to be some replacement ready; assumingly something with better yield.
BTW - the 5870 cards for the Mac Pro are made by AMD (they are identical to the reference boards), and are stamped as such in Mac Pros. Whatever Apple does with them, they still get them from AMD, not a third party....
And, the Quadro 4000 isn't a good replacement - apart from the cost (which is reasonable for a productivity card) as for non-optimized apps (i.e. users that would usually buy a 5870) it'll likely be much slower due to the low clock and memory speed on the card. And, WOW isn't CUDA aware
    Oh well

  • ATI Radeon HD 3870 Graphics Card for Mac debuts

    http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,147040-c,graphicsboards/article.html
AMD on Thursday announced the ATI Radeon HD 3870 for Mac and PC Edition. The new card is expected to ship at the end of June for US$219.
The card works in the PCI Express slots of both first-generation and second-generation Mac Pro systems, and features 512MB of 256-bit GDDR4 frame buffer memory and 320 stream processors. It's designed as a graphics upgrade for Mac Pros -- even those that may have come equipped with the Nvidia GeForce 8800 card introduced earlier this year. AMD claims its new Radeon card runs faster and costs less than the GeForce 8800 GT, which is only available from the Apple Store and costs $279.
The graphics processor can crank up to 70 gigabytes per second bandwidth using a 775MHz engine. That translates, according to AMD's internal benchmarks, into *30 to 180 percent better performance in Apple's Motion 3 software than the GeForce 8800*; slow Motion performance has been an Achilles' heel of Nvidia's rival card since its introduction.
    http://ati.amd.com/products/radeonhd3800/macpc/index.html

    Rob has it benchmarked:
    http://www.barefeats.com/harper16.html
I'm going to definitely buy this as soon as it's online. I'll order it through Rob's link too to reward him for all the work he's done on this issue.
Now, how about a refund on my GeForce 8800 upgrade, Apple?

  • How do I get info off my iMac hard drive now that it's out of the computer?

I was in a car accident recently. I'm okay, but I'm afraid my iMac did not survive. Before taking it to the insurance company to drop off the computer for reimbursement, I brought my computer to my local Apple Store to see if they could extract the data from the hard drive. (I've had this thing for years, so one can see that I would like to have what's on it.)
The Apple Store regretfully told me that they did not do this type of work and referred me to a nearby tech store that specialized in extracting data. I went there and they quoted me $80 for the hard drive's physical extraction and then another $30 for the information to be transferred onto a USB drive (or the equivalent). I was called a day later to be told that the mission was impossible, but I could go somewhere else that would charge me $1699 without tax and without a guarantee that they could actually perform the job.
    Let's face it - that's a lot of money.
I went home and researched how to get my hard drive out of the computer and did so without much hassle. I've since then turned in the other parts to the insurance company as they were broken and useless.
Now I have a hard drive sitting on my counter without any idea how to get the information off and onto an external storage unit. Is there any way I can get the data myself?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Whether or not you are able to recover the data off the drive yourself will depend on if the drive suffered any impact damage in the crash. You can buy USB SATA or IDE adapters (Intel and almost all G5 use SATA) that will let you connect your hard drive to a computer (like a flash drive) to see if you can recover the data. If the drive has suffered physical damage if may not mount.
If you know someone who has one of these adapters you could try using theirs, otherwise you could buy one but you take the risk of the data on the drive being non recoverable. Regardless, both are much cheaper than $1699!
(Alternatively, if you know of someone with a Mac Pro or PowerMac G5 they may be able to install the drive in their machine and try to boot from or mount it and copy the data off.)

  • Now that CS4 is out, what would we like to see in CS5?

    _ Speech recognition.
    _ Self sealing tanks.

    Christian,
I *think* that Juju's tongue was firmly in his cheek. I am surprised that the word "maverick" did not creep in someplace.
As for Elements, you are correct. It is, as described in another post, a "big button" program. However, with PE4 (have not seen 7, but assume that it follows in the consolidation footsteps of its predecessor), I find doing things much more difficult, than in Pro. Everything is hidden and you have to drill down to get the program to do things that are out in the open in Pro. Still, if a user wants to just push a couple of buttons and spit out a DVD for the family, it's a great little program, and the cost is definitely right.
I've been playing with it for a while now, trying to see what it can and cannot do. I picked it up because of a more liberal file acceptance, than Pro, though it is not that much more liberal - unlike what I was lead to believe. I find it more difficult to use and I started with Pinnacle S-7 thru S-10. PP has everything pretty much sitting out for you to use. In PE the Properties Panel goes off and hides all of the time and don't try to drag many of the Panels to another monitor. Still, if you want to Capture, hit a few buttons and get a DVD of the family at Disney World, you can do it before supper.
Sorry to take this thread so far off-topic, though I am not sure it
    b COULD
    get more off-topic.

    Hi Susiecat
Is there a downloadable Safari 3 that is now out of Beta?
Patience young grasshopper! No final version has yet been released.
I suspect you'll receive notice via Software Update in the next day or so - if you set it to automatically checks for updates.
The waiting game is now on! Exciting day for Apple and its users as Leopard's arrival nears.
