NPV and FCoE-NPV
Hi,
If I wish to enable NPV on a Nexus 5548 (so it can integrate with a 3rd party SAN switch), do I also need to enable FCoE-NPV?
Enable NPV:
switch(config)# npv enable
Enable FCoE:
switch(config)# feature fcoe
FCoE-NPV:
switch(config)# feature fcoe-npv
That is, to use 'npv enable', do I need to use 'feature fcoe-npv'?
I am trying to use FC to connect to a legacy SAN, while using FCoE to connect to servers in UCS. I'm not sure if I understand correctly, but I don't think I need FCoE-NPV to for UCS, but I do need to globally enable NPV for the Brocade switch.
One last thing... I've read that when enabling NPV the switch will erase the config and reboot. Why is this? Or does this only happen if the switch already has SAN config?
Thankyou
Thankyou. Here is some more information on our environment.
Our legacy system consists of Dell rack servers (The ones that run ESX have HBA's), IBM storage and 2x Brocade 300 SAN switches. The Brocades are not connected, so they run as separate fabrics. Most FC devices have dual-HBA's, so they can connect to both fabrics.
Our new environment (still being built) uses Cisco UCS B series blades, and Nexus 5548 switching. For storage we use NetApp (NFS and CIFS, no FC/FCoE/iSCSI).
We would like to connect the legacy and new environments, so one backup system can be used. I'd like to use FC for our new tape library, and continue using FC for our legacy. I'd like to be able to present storage to ESXi VMs running on the UCS blades.
After doing some research, I think that making the 5k's the 'core' fabric would be best, which means putting the Brocade's into AG Mode (NPV). The FC ports on the 5k's would be in NPIV mode.
As I understand it, the Fabric Interconnects (in end-host mode) are also in NPV. Does this mean I need to use 'feature fcoe' on the 5548's, but not 'feature fcoe-npv'?
Does this plan make sense? Unfortunately I'm a networking guy, not a storage guy, so some of this may be way off.
Thanks again for your help

ECC v6.0 installation error : CJS-30022 and FCO-00011
Hi All,
I enconter the while <u><b>installing ECC 6.0 in windows 2003 server and MSSQL 2005 as the database</b></u>. The error occurs during <u><b>import ABAP phase ( exactly the Job name was SAPSDIC and this is the first job out of 19)</b></u>
The same issue has been discussed in this forum but for oracle( Please find the link below for it)Kindly let me know how to fix it and since the database i am using it is SQL 2005 i am really confused on <u><b>what should i change exactly</b></u>.

Nexus 5500 VoIP cos 3 and FCoE
Hi
I have a requirment to do QoS for a DC that includes some VoIP as well FCoE with CNAs in the servers. I want to use COS 3 for the VoIP signalling and drop it in the same input and output quues to the servers as FCoE.
so we have
class-map type qos class-fcoe
class-map type queuing class-fcoe
match qos-group 1
which is the default for FCoE and I have 50% bandwidth assoicated with it.
policy-map type queuing
class type queuing class-fcoe
bandwidth percent 50
class type queing someother class etc
The issue is the "class-fcoe" is a default class and there doesnt seem to be anywhere I can edit it to add the VOIP control traffic to the same class or can I just add it here:
class-map type queuing match any class-fcoe
match qos-group 1
match cos 3
Thanks
PatHmm
From the UCS 8 SRND
For instance, voice signaling traffic with L3 DSCP value of CS3 is mapped to L2 CoS value of 3 by Nexus 1000V. All Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) traffic is marked with L2 CoS value of 3 by Cisco UCS. When voice signaling and FCoE traffic enter the Cisco UCS 6100 Fabric Interconnect Switch, both will carry a CoS value of 3. In this situation voice signaling traffic will share queues and scheduling with the Fibre Channel priority class and will be given lossless behavior. (Fibre Channel priority class for CoS 3 in the UCS 6100 Fabric Interconnect Switch does not imply that the class cannot be shared with other types of traffic.)
This seems ti pmply you can run Call SIgnalling COS 3 in the same queueu as FCOE COS 3. I kow its talking about a 6100 fabric switch but thats very similar to a 5500.
Could I not do something like:
class-map type qos match-all voice-signal-global
match-cos 3
policy-map type qos classify-global
class voice-signal-global
set qos-group 1
class class-fcoe
set qos-group 1
But then I cant see how to link this where we set the queuing bandwidth percentages as this uses the "class-fcoe"
policy-map type queuing global-fcoe-queuing-in
class type queuing class-fcoe
bandwidth percent 50
Could I create a class to replace "class-fcoe" and jsut match on qos-group 1 to define whats in it ?

Changing VSAN ID and FCoE VLAN ID
Currently our VSAN ID and FCoE VLAN ID are exactly the same, 1. In order to update the firmware on our fabric interconnects, I need to change one or the other with the FCoE VLAN ID being the most likely choice. When our VSAN was created in UCSM, it was created as 1 shared VSAN rather than one VSAN for fabric A and another for fabric B. I was told that if I change the FCoE VLAN ID, it's going to cause a short blip due to the way the VSAN was created. Has this ever happened to anyone and if so, what was your experience? How long of an outage can I expect from this change?
There are misc. aspects that you should consider
- Vlan 1 and Vsan 1 should never be used for any operational purposes (eg. caveats with disjoint vlans)
- Same vlan should be defined in both fabric a and b (nic teaming !)
- vsan's should be different for fabric a and b; a cable connecting fabric a and b will not result in a fabric merge, and therefore a possible disaster
- FCoE vlans for vsan #x are best placed with a high offset + #x
As you said, changing the FCoE vlan is disruptive, link initialization, flogi... have to be done; usually a OS should survive such a short interrupt.
However, changing the Vsan # might also require zoning changes (if you use fc alias which are per vsan; device alias are global, and therefore don't have this problem).
Changing vsan # might also require a modification of the FI FC uplink ports
Good luck -
Hi,
it's possible a topology with fabricpath and fcoe multihop on same links?
tnx

you might want to review the prerequisites

UCS/Nexus and FCoE Question
Hi, All:
Can one connect an FCoE target directly to a Fabric Interconnect or a Nexus 5xxx FCF when in NPV mode and not connected to an FC switch for fabric services and still be able to have the initiator see the target and be able to provision storage accordingly?
So, the scenario would be the following:
a rack server with a CNA connected to a Nexus 5xxx FCF in NPV mode
OR
a blade server with a CNA connected to a UCS Fabric Interconnect (which is also an FCF) in NPV mode
AND
In either of the cases above, there is NO CONNECTION between the FCF and an FC switch.
Will I be able to have the CNA (FCoE initiator) see the Strorage array (FCoE target)?
Thank youGanesh, your answers make sense, and given my understanding of FCoE and the FLOGI and PLOGI processes, I want to agree with you. BUT I have had a person who I believe to be very knowledgeable in UCS (former Cisco solutions engineer) tell me that you CAN connect an FCoE storage array directly to an FI FCoE port while the FI is in NPV mode and be able to provision storage, even if the FI is not connected to an FC switch. To me, that doesnt make sense because, in such a case, there is no appliance to provide FC services to support the FIP FLOGI and PLOGI processes - and therefore, how would an E_Node (VN_Port) be able to log into the fabric, get an FC-ID and FPMA, register with the name server and engage in peer VN_Port capability discovery? How would a server CNA even know that there is a storage array that is reachable without the PLOGI process?

Help me,
Cdlt,Hi,
I had same configuration on both N5K.
I have removed the configuration Fcoe on second N5k.
Interface vfc1 seems to be Ok.
But i have another problem, On esxi the Emulex One command plug-in says ethernet's interfaces is up.
But Vcenter sees them down !!
Emulex One command :
In the distibuted Vswitch :
But LLDP seems Ok : -
I have heard some folks argue that ETS (Enhanced Transmission Selection) is NOT required to make FCoE work. I'm thinking specdifically of the case in which a CNA is connected to a DCB-capable Ethernet switch that is doing FIP Snooping, which is then uplinked to, say, a Cisco Nexus. The argument goes that the DCB-capable switch does NOT require ETS support to make this design work and be stable.
THOUGHTS?
ThanksThankyou.
Thanks again for your help -
Hi!
I’m about to start the configuration of two new Nexus 5010 with FC-module and license, please have a look at the attached Visio drawing. The servers have one CNA card with two ports connected to each of the switches which should be used both for normal Ethernet and Fiber Channel over Ethernet traffic. The SAN includes two controllers, with two ports on each controller.
What is the “best practice” setup for this solution?
/PerYour setup looks fine.
You can create a vPC to each host for Ethernet traffic, while your FC traffic will utilize each link to NX01 & NX02 separately.
One tip is if you're using an SVI for the Keep Alive link, then ensure you prune it off your VPC peer link. If you're using the Management Interface for VPC Keep alive, then you don't have to worry about that.
Since you don't have any FC switches in your diagram I'll assume you're going to run your N5Ks in FC Switch mode (non NPV mode). This will allow fabric services to run and allow you to configure zoning and name services.

10G Ethernet and FCoE ports - Whats the diff?
Hi All,
I know what FCoE is and all that stuff. My only confusion is when we say that Nexus 5K ports can be configured either as 10G Ethernet or FCoE ports, what that actually means? All Cisco video data sheets say this.
I know Nexus 5K supports FCoE as a switch. But, why would they say the ports can be configured as FCoE? If a physical port supports Ethernet, then it must also support FCoE frames, right? After all, FCoE frames are Ethernet frames carring is just another payload type (FC, EthType = 8906). So, for Ethernet, FCOE frames are just like any other traffic. What is special about a port being said as FCOE enabled port?
My own answer to is this. If the port is FCOE capable, it will look into the incoming frames and if Ethtype is 8906, it will forward to the FC part of the N5K. If any other EthType, forward it the LAN side of the N5K. Is this corret?
Also, if an Ethernet Switch is DCB capable, that is, CEE, do we call this as FCoE Switch? This switch is not going to open the Ethernet frames.
Looks like these definitions are not clear...
Would appreciate any help in clarifying this.
Thanks and Regards,
MohanHello Mohan,
In the Nexus switch when you bind a virtual FC port to a physical port, the switch knows that port will now process FCoE frames.
For the Nexus switch is pretty simple to identify a FCoE frame from another frame, just looking the Ethertype as you said.
When a frame comes in the switch port, the asic checks the ethertype of the frame, if a 0x8914 (FIP) or 0x8906 (DATA) ethertype match, then this frame will be processed by the SAN built in switch.
The DCB is the correct term, using by IEEE. The CEE as far I know is a IBM terminology that supposed have te same features of DCB. To be correct look for DCB capability and you will know that device can support FCoE.
Lastly, be aware, just because the box is "DCB capable", it not means have FCoE implemented. The DCB is just a requirement to you run FCoE in your product.

AIX tries to startup FCoE before LACP is negotiated. We added a startup script to run cfgmgr on the VIOS after LACP starts up to get around this issue.
Sent from Cisco Technical Support iPhone AppIn your TNSNAMES.ora, the HOST needs to point to where your listener and DSN/ODBC are set up.
I think you can get AIX ODBC drivers from Data Direct
http://www.datadirect.com/index.ssp
Since you want to use MS Access, I sugguest that you put the database on an Windows machine, configure an ORACLE LISTENER on the same windows machine (and put the INITMSACCESS.ORA on there too), and in your AIX-side tnsnames.ora, point your HOST= to that windows machine.
When you try to select from a table over the database link, oracle looks up the TNS Service name (the 'using' bit in the create database link command), then looks that up in its local TNSNAMES.ora. It tries to contact the listener in the ADDRESS=() section, and passes it the CONNECTION_DATA. The listener (now on your windows machine) receives this request, and looks up SID_NAME= in its LISTENER.ORA file. It notices that in order to satisfy this request, it needs to launch a program named 'HSODBC' (you specified this as PROGRAM= ), using the given ORACLE_HOME. When HSODBC starts up, and is given the SID_NAME by the listener, it looks for the file initACCESS1.ora file, looks up the HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO= line, and uses that to try to open an ODBC connection.
I've never actually tried this, so I'd be very interested to hear if it works.

FCoE options for Cisco UCS and Compellent SAN
Hi,
We have a Dell Compellent SAN storage with iSCSI and FCoE module in pre-production environment.
It is connected to new Cisco UCS infrastructure (5108 Chassis with 2208IOM + B200 M2 Blades + 6248 Fabric Interconnect) via 10G iSCSI module (FCoE module isn't being used at th is moment).
I reviewed compatibility matrix on interconnect but Compellent (Dell) SAN is only supported on FI NXOS 1.3(1), 1.4(1) without using 6248 and 2208 IOM which is what we have. I'm sure some of you have similar hardware configuration as ours and I'd like to see if there's any supportive Cisco FC/FCoE deployment option for the Compellent. We're pretty tight on budget at this moment so purchasing couple of Nexus 5K switches or something equipvalent for such a small number of chassis (only only have one) is not a preferred option. If additional hardware acquisition is inevitable, what would be the most cost effective solution to be able to support FCoE implementation?
Thank you in advance for your help on this.Unfortunatly there isn't really one - with direct attach storage there is still the requirement that an upstream MDS/N5k pushes the zoning to it. Without a MDS to push the zoning the system it's recommended for production.
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/unified_computing/ucs/sw/gui/config/guide/2.0/b_UCSM_GUI_Configuration_Guide_2_0_chapter_0101.html#concept_05717B723C2746E1A9F6AB3A3FFA2C72
Even if you had a MDS/N5K the 6248/2208's wouldn't support the Compellent SAN - see note 9.
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/datacenter/mds9000/interoperability/matrix/Matrix8.pdf
That's not to say that it won't work, it's just that we haven't tested it and don't know what it will do and thus TAC cannot troubleshoot SAN errors on the UCS.
On the plus side iSCSI if setup correctly can be very solid and can give you a great amount of throughput - just make sure to configure the QoS correctly and if you need more throughput then just add some additional links -
Java Version for ERP 2005 and Oracle 10.2.0.1
Hi all,
I've just a question. I'm trying to install ERP2005 on Windows 2003 Server with Oracle 10.2.0.1.
But the process terminates at the step "Import ABAP" with the error messages concerning "CJS-30022 Program 'Migration Monitor' exits with error code 103 " and " FCO-00011 The step runMigrationMonitor with step key".
I've had a similiar abort with another installation. Could the java version cause this error? Which java version is recommended as standard in regard to our ERP2005-installation?
Please help me !!
Thanks in advance.10.2.0.1 is not supported.
you have directly update 10.2.0.1 after the installation to 10.2.0.2 and then install at least hotfix 10.2.0.2.12 (current is 10.2.0.2.13).
Using older version of Oracle 10.2.0.2.12 will cause a lot of problems.
By the way, are you installing a blank new ERP2005 or are you performing a systme copy?
