npviewer.bin (on linux) eats lots of CPU and doesn't even close when firefox is closed.

I've begun having this problem as well. Reviewing the above, I seen no errors that I' making. A few weeks ago, without being aware of an update to Firefox, it began behaving differently than it has for years. I've always had it set to open to an empty tab, now it often opens to the 'Firefox Home Page' (which I've never used)... this despite resetting my opening page to "Show my windows and tabs from last time" (upon troubleshooting the 'home page issue' I found that the opening page had reset to FF Home somehow. I store a lot of pages in tab groups and having them disappear is a major bummer since they're news articles I'm waiting to copy.
Also... I run CCleaner weekly and I know that will erase the group tabs I've stored so before running it I have to store those URL's another way. Does anyone know what I can uncheck in CCleaner to keep those tabs?
Thanks.

  • Photobooth is eating 75% of cpu and the whole app drags...

    I have trashed the plist etc,
    and still nothing.
    When I open the app it eats about 15% cpu according to activity monitor, but as soon as I select the effects button #1 , the cpu just goes to the ceiling.
    I trashed the plist, I created a new user, and it acts the same way.
    I do notice that it drags and slows down when i select the "#1" set of effects,
    "#2" set of effects still work fine, and the app doesnt slow down or become unresponsice like it does when effects number 1 is chosen.
    Interesting that I am on a G5 and there still hasn't been an official update for photobooth , but there has been for Intel users. So, I got two problems now with photobooth , the pop art effect is still broke, and now the app is becoming completely useless.
    oh well...

    "I trashed the plist, I created a new user, *and it acts the same way*."
    It's possible somehow the app is corrupted and/or something is conflicting with it. A couple of things to try to weed out the problem.
    *Except for the keyboard & mouse, disconnect all devices/peripherals from your computer.*
    #1 - Repair disk/permissions from your Tiger System Install DVD.
    #2 - Open Library>Startup items folder-the root level Library, not the one in your user name folder.
    Look for potentially problematic 3rd party items such as virus scanning software components, etc. Remove 1 or more items to a location outside the Library folder, such as the Desktop, then restart normally & see if Photobooth is still hogging up the CPU. It it does, try removing all the items in the Startup items folder & restart. If all’s now well, place the items back into the Startup items folder 1 by 1, restarting each time you put one back. If and/or when the issue resurfaces, you just identified the faulty component.
    If the above does not work, then it’s time to move on to.................
    WARNING-This step can be tedious-removing .plist files from the /Library/Preferences folder.
    Remove the entire Preferences folder from the Library folder on your startup drive then place the files back 1 by 1 until you see the problem return. *The Mac will automatically create a new Preferences folder in the Library folder*
    Alternatively, you can take half of the items out (all non-Apple .plist file, for example), restart to see if Photobooth is still having issues, then move to a smaller set of items, repeating the process until the culprit is found.
    Or you can use Preferential Treatment which is a FREE utility that does all the work for you.
    #3 - Archive & Install
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301270 Scroll down to "Archive and Install”
    #4 - Re-install Photobooth. It should be in the Bundled Software folder in the Tiger System Install DVD.

    The only solution for your model iMac is to download the Russian fix. It works. I have it & now am a happy camper. The Russian cure will update Photobooth to v1.2.
    http://www.firblitz.com/2006/12/10/photo-booth-broken
    Regarding your comments:
    +"This "little" russian fix, created a much more larger problem dealing with the software update program and how it distinguishes whether you have the current updates for your apple software.+
    +So using the 1.2 russian update has made things worse for people with non-russian imacs."+
    I hope you are aware that *not everyone* suffered from this +Russian glitch.+ If it happens to you, then I suggest that you search the web for a cure and/or contact Apple. Just make sure you repair permissions & restart after the installation if you decide to take the Russian route.

  • Mds Process takes a lot of CPU and TimeMachine is blocked

    I have TimeMachine activated on an external HD. Everything works fine and some other external HDs are backup with TimeMachine to the TimeMachine Drive. When I now activate SpotLight for my internal Macintosh HD the TimePachine Process stops and is never going on. When I kill the mds process TimeMachine is going on with backUp. Next try from TimeMachine and I have same problem again.
    When I move Macintosh HD to private area from Spotlight TimeMachine is working fine. Now I can't search in Mail, Macintosh HD and some more unfunny things. It would be great when everything works fine again.
    I was checking the access right and everything was fixed or there was nothing to fix. I checked the Macintosh HD by using the Recovery Partition and everything is fine.
    When I now remove the Macintosh HD again from the privat area of spotlight mrs will take very fast 200% CPU on my iMac and next TimeMachine Process ist blocked again.
    It is not a question of time. I ran mrs now for 7 days and it takes always 100-200% CPU in top and I stopped TimeMachine during this time. My Macintosh HD has 500GB and the TimeMachine HD 2TB and it has 1TB free space.
    I stopped TimeMachine, initialized the HD, reactivated TimeMachine and everything was archived as long as I had Macintosh HD in privat area of Spotlight.
    At the moment I don't have any idea what I can do. Is there any possibility to see what mrs is doing when it takes so much CPU which folder or file the process trys to process?
    So what can I do?

    Problem solved...
    I found a folder I deleted and problem was solved.

  • I have The latest Firefox installed on an older Dell, and the CA security suite thru my ISP, which takes all my CPU and causes everything to freeze when I try to access it's features. I need a free internet security program that does tax my system so much

    Have older Dell Dimension 32/bit with Win XP Prof 2002. I have installed CA security suite from my ISP, which is a huge program and uses 100% of CPU on start-up & shut down, slowing everthing to a snails pace. I have removed evrything I don't need using 30 day free Revo Unistaller Pro, but when I try to access CA's Firewall to add programs to the exception rule, it will open, then freezes along with Firefox tabs and anything else. Can't even shut down from start menu. I want to get rid of CA(although it is a good program, it's too big), and go back to using my Win Firewall(or another better free firewall that's good for more than 30 days trial) and some other free internet security program that is easy, runs in the background and doesn't take all my resources and isn't just a 30 day free trial till you buy the program. I am also trying to install a wireless adapter so I can drop my ISP and use the free city/county signal as no work for 20 months!
    == This happened ==
    A few times a week
    == Trying to access CA security Suite Firewall

    I am the original poster, and I got rid of CA Security Suite & and loaded the Avast! which has some great features even on the freeware. No more crashes or freezing & yes I think there is a problem with CA & Firefox, but am not sure what it is. CA was a big time hog. I also got rid of my ISP and installed a Intellinet Wireless G PCI Card & now am completely wireless on my PC. Faster by far than what I was paying $50/month for & I use my Windows Firewall.

  • Firefox 3.6.3 & .4 uses 100% CPU and won't always close or open

    Firefox intermittently uses 100% of CPU and I have to manually turn off the computer. Firefox also does not start or finiosh correctly, the process is alive and I have to use Task Manager to end the process In the meantime I have installed IE7, as I cannot access internet banking with Firefox. Very disappointing as I have ben an enthusiastic user and promoter of FF.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == After upgrading to 3.6.3, and is no better with 3.6.4, despite deleting all add-ons

    I also have this problem which has been getting worse with recent successive updates of Firefox. As a long-time user and advocate, I am about ready to look for an alternative browser. Firefox will not close and exit properly, requiring direct cancellation through Task Manager; starts up very slowly (often 1 to 2 minutes); and frequently locks up the CPU with 100% of cycles while doing NOTHING; offers to restart crashed sessions, but cannot recover and reload those sessions; will not operate correctly while any other application accesses the internet, like uTorrent. Firefox is set to delete cookies, etc. whenever the session closes, sqlite database is vacuumed regularly, CCleaner regularly wipes remaining accretions, and disk is defragged. Currently running 3.5.5 but will NOT upgrade until this problem is solved since later builds report the same problems. I know several other users who have experienced the same problem and I can no longer automatically recommend Firefox to users and clients. Is anybody paying any attention to this problem? What is being done to address this fault? Why is there no response to the original poster? Is this really a support forum or just a way to preoccupy and distract the users who suffer this malfunction? Wireless 54Mbps connection. • Parallels takes high CPU and makes fan go 6000RPM when device connected

    I'm running Mac OS 10.5.5 on an Early 2008 white base Macbook, with Boot Camp and Parallels (which runs my Boot Camp partition) so I can use Windows XP, which I need for some XP applications I need that don't work in Crossover.
    I usually keep Parallels running, with XP paused (since I occasionally need it and don't want to wait for it to boot and drain my battery). If I plug in a USB device, such as my wireless mouse or external hard drive, Parallels asks me if I want to connect the device to the XP system, but since I'm usually using OS X, I keep Parallels hidden. So, I don't see the prompt. Parallels then takes 100% CPU and forces my fan to increase to 6000+RPM from the high temperatures it creates. Even though the system is paused, when I plug in a device, it takes 100% CPU simply for having the prompt dialog box open. Any way to fix this?
    I have a base Macbook (Early 2008) upgraded to 4GB RAM (so I could actually use Parallels without both the systems being really slow).
    On another note, is it more battery-consuming to keep XP paused, or to shut it down altogether and boot it up later?
    Thanks.

    Make sure you've updated to the latest version Parallels, and you should probably consider posting your question in the Parallels forums:

  • Why is Firefox taking up a lot of CPU and running very slowly?

    For the past week my Firefox (and also Chrome) have been running very slowly. Any time a page loads the CPU column in Task Manager shoots up to between 10-20 when it's usually at 00, and it sends my cpu fans into overdrive until the page is loading.
    Pictures load very slowly, and busy pages are even worse, such as Weather channel pages or Gawker blog articles. I've run MSE, Malwarebytes, I've run Firefox in safe mode, nothing is working. I'm really beginning to get frustrated because it's making any kind of browsing at all very unenjoyable.

    Safe Mode didn't make any difference?
    Run all Windows Updates, install all needed service packs, etc.
    Update your graphics driver (Firefox uses your graphics card for some rendering, and an out of date graphics card driver can cause problems. [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-upgrade-my-graphics-drivers https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-upgrade-my-graphics-drivers].

  • Webutil_file_transfer consuming a lot of memory and doesn't release...

    I'm facing a problem with webutil_file_transfer.client_to_as_with_progress when I'm transferring many files from the client to the server. Suddenly webutil stops the transferring and webutil doesn't work until I've restarted the form.
    I've noticed that the frmweb.exe process is increasing it's memory usage while traferring the files. When it reaches about 90-100mb memory in use - webutil "explodes".
    It looks like webutil doesn't relase the ressources after the file has been transferred to the server.

    I've found a workaround to this "bug".
    Instead of calling webutil_file_transfer..... directly in the code - I open a new form with call_form, activates a timer in the when_new_form_instance trigger - which makes the call to webutil_file_transfer - and then closes the form.
    Now webutil is releasing the ressources, because the form which made the webutil-call i closed after each call.

  • I have a n ebook with a small screen and the toolbar takes up a lot of space and i want to close it temporaril but i want to get it back.

    I am using a Eee PC notebook. It has a small 13 inch screen. When I try to use gmail at least one third of the available screen is tied up with their stuff and one quarter by the Firefox toolbar. I am reluctant to turn off the toolbar as some posts indicate a problem with getting it back.. That is why I started with Firefox . I will deal with Gmail later.
    Thank yoy in advance
    pmm

    Right-click the Menu bar (File, Edit, etc) and un-check it at the top of that Context menu. When you want to see the Menu bar just hit the '''Alt''' key to have it appear. No problem getting it back, as posted by users who aren't familiar with this feature which isn't unique to Firefox, IE8 and 9 have this feature with the Alt key, too.

  • Firexfox doesn't shuts even if i close the window; it keeps running silently in the background and takes a huge CPU and compells me to close the program from task manager.

  • Lots of extensions and plugins were not compatible with firefox 6. Is this the same with firefox 7???

    I have always updated firefox until version 6 which I uninstalled and now I have version 4. Version 6 was not compatible with several extensions such as adobe flashplayer, some java.... too many. Version 7 will have the same problems? I will not update my version if those problems continue.
    Thank you

    Plugins (Tools > Add-ons > Plugins) like the Adobe Flash player and the Java plugin are not affected by updating and should still be working.
    Extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) like the Java Console extension have a minimum and maximum version and may get disabled.<br />
    Extensions are provided by third-party developers and it may take some time to have them updated or the creator may decide to stop the support for the new Firefox version and abandon the extension like happened with the Google Toolbar.

  • Long running processes using a lot of CPU

    Hi all,
    We have a clustered environment and on both the DB nodes there are processes that is taking a lot of CPU and runs a really long time. The load of the servers get really high and performance degrades drastically.
    I've traced the processes and the module is usually a combination of the following:
    icx.por.rcv.server.ReceiveItemsAM
    icx.por.reqmgmt.server.ReqMgmtAM
    I know it has something to do with Purchase Orders.
    Can someone please give me more info on this processes and what I can do about them?
    Thanks in advance.

    ..Step by Step to fix your Mac
    They will just say it's a software problem you need to fix most likely.
    However if you have exhausted your software fixes and/or Hardware Test gives something, it could be a hardware problem, but likely it's software for what your mentioning.

  • JDK1.3: 100% CPU and total hanging up

    Our environemt is HP-UX with 4 CPU, 2.5Gb of memory. Java is 1.3.13 (latest release). All necessary Unix patches installed.
    We perform a load test over our application server with 40 users only. The test is pretty simple and doesn't deserve to be explained here (it uses no special system resources). In an unpredictable moment the java process utilizes 100% CPU and doesn't react to 'kill -3' but to 'kill -9' only. The problem is it happens whenever it wishes. No logic behind it. Every test loop takes about 1 minute to complete and the server gets stucked sometimes after 10 mins and sometimes after 3 houres of work. Changing java heap parameters and playing with new/old generation ratio also doesn't lead to any conclusion. Sometimes it happens before full gc but other settings allow full gc to happen every minute and the server works for hours.
    What can it be? Any ideas? Any directions of investingation the problem?

    What can it be? Any ideas? Any directions of investingation the problem?An endless do-nothing loop. I've seen HotSpot optimize such a loop to a single "jump-to-self" CPU instruction. HotSpot doesn't know how to insert a suspension safepoint into a loop that consists of a single instruction. When GC next kicks in it suspends every thread (including the signal dispatcher, which is responsible for a thread dump) but the nop-loop thread continues with free reign of the CPU.
    In my case the loop looked like the following. A thread is started running this class, later another thread passes it some data by calling put(). There is no synchronization so the former thread is not obliged to see the effects of any other thread. The optimizer legally considered this loop to be do-nothing.
    class ... implements Runnable {
        private Object data;
        public void put(Object data) {
            this.data = data;
        public void run() {
            while (true) {
                if (data == null) continue;
                // process data
    }Since you can't get a thread dump it's very hard to pinpoint the problematic piece of code (unless you have Sun's poprietary tools that restore Java state from a core file).
    If your code base is reasonably small, review it thoroughly for what can be an endless do-nothing loop. Another approach is to incrementally insert System.err.println("") into suspicious loops. This will add a call to native code and thus a suspension safepoint. Once you no longer can reproduce the problem, you must have hit the problemmatic loop. Go back and review it carefully.
