NSS3000 admin/root password

I have problem to access the NAS management GUI on our CISCO NSS3000 box.
Is it possible that CISCO has a overall admin account that can help me in this situation?
The box is more than two years old and the CISCO small business support line is refusing to give any support.
Thanks for any advice in this matter!

Hi
You could restart the mac and hold down the alt key (option). This should bring up the Startup Disk Manager. Pressing the media eject key on the keyboard should eject the tray allowing you to insert the Leopard Installer. If the firmware can see a valid boot OS either on a drive (internal or external) or optical disk it will show you. You should be able to select it and to boot from there.
On the Leopard Client Discussion Forum at the top of all the sub-sections is this link:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307005
I would look here to see if there is anything that might help. Also this link:
http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=599
Has a wealth of information that you may also find useful.
If you are still struggling, some people have been reported a problem with 3rd-Party additional RAM causing the Leopard Installer to stall. Remove any additional RAM installed beyond the factory fitted RAM modules. Obviously you must have at least 1GB of RAM for Leopard to install so it may not be practical to do this. Alternatively if you have access to another qualifying mac you could try the installer on that to double check if there is an issue with the installer disk.
Hope this helps, Tony

  • Preventing local admin from changing root password

Is it possible to prevent a local admin from changing the root password? I would like to set up a computer so that the user has admin rights, but cannot change the root password via a terminal shell to gain root access.

I can't provide you with details, but I'm sure that all you need to do is to edit the sudoers file. It needs to be edited with <visudo> when logged in as root in a Terminal. The location is </private/etc/sudoers>, but you don't need to know that when using <visudo>. From a first look I'd suppose you only have to uncomment the %admin line, but better get some more information. I never did this myself.

  • Can local admin change the root password in Mavericks

One of my people and I keep going back and forth with this question. I remember reading somewhere (cannot find it now) that in 10.9 Apple changed it, so a local admin could not longer change the root password if it has been enabled by the IT group.

AFAIK, any admin account user can set/change the root password. See OS X Mavericks: Enable and disable the root user for details. If you or IT don't trust your people, don't give them admin privileges.

Old IMAC with 10.5.6 OSX. Forgot Administrator password (which I had already changed.) Followed instructions as per http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1274
Started up from the original OSX install disc 1 and selected "Password reset" from "utilies" in Installer. But HD icon doesn't show up. (Only install disc and admin root available:no good as the support website underscores: Important: Do not select "System Administrator (root)". This is actually the root user. You should not confuse it with a normal administrator account.).
    What can I do?
    Thanks for your suggestions. Antonio

Not familiar with that version of OS X but try using Terminal and type in resetpassword. If that brings up a password reset screen is your original username shown?

  • How to create/reset root password on OSX Yosemite

    Hi,
I am currently a standard user on a late 2008 Macbook Pro. There are two users on my computer, mine and another admin account. I do not know the password to the admin account. Before I upgraded to OSX Yosemite I had created a root user password in SUM using the command "passwd". After I upgraded (I reset my computer) I was back at square one, me as a standard user and another admin account that I didn't know the password. After I upgraded the “passwd” command didn’t work.
I tried to obtain the root password using multiple SUM commands like, "rm /var/db/ .AppleSetupDone" which didn't work because it said that it couldn't find the file. Then I tried to use the command, “/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.opendirectoryd.plist” and then entering “passwd”. However that didn’t work. (Everything I did was after I mounted the drive.)
So I was wondering if anyone on the forums knew of a way for a standard user to reset the root password without the knowledge of the admin password.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hey SamuraiPizzzaCat,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like you want to use automatic login. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.
OS X Yosemite: Login Options pane of Users & Groups preferences
    Automatic login
Choose Off to require users to log in whenever the Mac restarts.
To automatically log in a particular user when the Mac restarts, choose the user’s account name and enter his or her password.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Have a nice day,
    Mario

  • System Admin Root Appears!

OK, I haven't seen this posted anywhere but this freaked me out this morning.
I have two accounts on my P'Book G4 under OS 10.4.8. One business, one personal, to keep things separate. I switch between them regularly. I usually have them both logged in and use fast user switching.
A couple of years ago, I enabled a root System Admin account, assigned a known password to it, used it to conduct some clean up on the HDD, and then, disabled it. It hasn't been used since.
This morning, I woke the 'Book up from slumber and logged on and to my surprise - lo and behold - in the toolbar list up top were not only my two accounts but a System Administrator account. This account was not logged in at the time but I was pretty surprised to see it in the list.
I clicked it to log in so I could see what was up and how about that - my known password for root accounts would not work. Nor would any of my other known passwords.
I quickly opened NetInfo Manager and disabled the root user. I logged off, restarted and presto - no Sys Admin account listed (at this time).
Has anyone experienced this? This seems extremely odd to me and I must say, I just don't like it.
Are there any guesses as to why this may be happening?
Can I prohibit this from re-occurring?
Thanks a lot for your thoughts and assistance.

    Matt,
Has anyone else had physical access to your computer, along with the OS X installation disk(s)? If so, they could have used the disk to enable the root account and set a different password, using the password reset utility.
The most important protection for your computer is always physical security. It is not a good idea to leave your computer unattended, and an even worse idea to do so in the presence of the installation disks.
If there is no chance that this has occurred, there may be some problem with your Netinfo Database (it happens). Keep an eye on things, and if it occurs again, you might want to consider replacing the Netinfo Database (a relatively painless procedure). In the meantime, I recommend that you use your installation disk to reset the root password to one you know, and make it a good one. As always, leave the root accout disabled when you are done.

  • Changing the weblogic admin user password

I have faced an issue in reseting weblogic admin user password. Following are the steps i have executed in sequence.please help to understand why it is not working this way
I have 2 managed instances running on two separate computers.
`Step 1.` shutdown the admin server instance ( i did not shutdown the node manager and other 2 manage server instances
`Step 2.` Set the environment variables
    `cd $DOMAIN_HOME/bin`
    . ./setDomainEnv.sh
`Step 3.` then executed the command below to create the new password
    cd ../security
    mv DefaultAuthenticatorInit.ldift oldDefaultAuthenticator
    java weblogic.security.utils.AdminAccount weblogic new_password .
`Step 4.` backed up existing `boot.properties` file and created a new file. Also backed up data directory of admin server. created a new `boot.properties` file with following configuration
with plain text username(weblogic_admin) and password (new_password).
    cd ../servers/AdminServer
    mv data data_old
    cd security/
    mv boot.properties oldboot.properties
Step 5. Then i restarted the admin server. admin server is restarted successfully and i was able to login the admin console with my new username and password. Issue came when i try to shoutdown the admin server. when i execute sh stopWeblogicAdmin.sh , it will through following exception. But , if i kill the admin server process , then i am able to start the admin server with out any problem. and i am able to login to the server also. I am also able to stop and start manage server instances through admin console. But why it is failing only when i try to stop.could anybody help me on this

    Hi,
This issue was occurring because stopWebLogic.sh was picking the username and password from properties user config files in user's home directory: username-WebLogicConfig.properties, username-WebLogicKey.properties.
If the credentials for weblogic server are changed then new user config files should be created, if these are not created then stopWebLogic.sh will pick up the old credentials and hence fail.
Please refer the following document for information on user configuration files:
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E21764_01/web.1111/e13813/reference.htm#WLSTC430
Connecting to the server after deleting username-WebLogicConfig.properties, username-WebLogicKey.properties resolves the issue as it forces the script to use the credentials provided by the user while running stopWebLogic.sh
There are two ways you can resolve this issue:
    1) Create new user config files with the correct credentials as explained in the following document:
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E21764_01/web.1111/e13813/reference.htm#WLSTC430
    Or
    2) To force the stopWeblogic.sh script to use credentials provided by the user while running the script follow these steps:
In the stopWeblogic.sh file use the following connect command:
    connect(userConfigFile='',userKeyFile='', url='${ADMIN_URL}', adminServerName='${SERVER_NAME}')instead of:
    connect(${userID} ${password} url='${ADMIN_URL}', adminServerName='${SERVER_NAME}')Hence in the stopWebLogic.sh script replace:
    echo "import os" >"shutdown.py"
    echo "if os.environ.has_key('wlsUserID'):" >>"shutdown.py"
    echo " wlsUserID = os.environ['wlsUserID']" >>"shutdown.py"
    echo "if os.environ.has_key('wlsPassword'):" >>"shutdown.py"
    echo " wlsPassword = os.environ['wlsPassword']" >>"shutdown.py"
    echo "connect(${userID} ${password} url='${ADMIN_URL}', adminServerName='${SERVER_NAME}')" >>"shutdown.py"
    echo "shutdown('${SERVER_NAME}','Server')" >>"shutdown.py"
    echo "exit()" >>"shutdown.py"with:
    echo "import os" >"shutdown.py"
    echo "if os.environ.has_key('wlsUserID'):" >>"shutdown.py"
    echo " wlsUserID = os.environ['wlsUserID']" >>"shutdown.py"
    echo "if os.environ.has_key('wlsPassword'):" >>"shutdown.py"
    echo " wlsPassword = os.environ['wlsPassword']" >>"shutdown.py"
    echo "connect(userConfigFile='',userKeyFile='', url='${ADMIN_URL}', adminServerName='${SERVER_NAME}')" >>"shutdown.py"
    echo "shutdown('${SERVER_NAME}','Server')" >>"shutdown.py"
    echo "exit()" >>"shutdown.py"

  • Root password and /usr/lib/cron/tabs folder

/usr/lib/cron/tabs is owned by root with the permissions of "drwx------ 2 root". My user on this machine is an admin but I cannot see the contents of /usr/lib/cron/tabs and I do not know the root pw. As an admin on this machine how do I reset the root PW or get into the /usr/lib/cron/tabs folder?
    Thanks.

    you can use
    *sudo ls /usr/lib/cron/tabs*
    with your admin password.
You can reset root password by booting from the leopard install DVD and using "Reset Password" utility.

  • MYSQL Root password

    Hi Guys,
I'm rather new to all this PHP and MYSQL stuff, so please bear with me. I have downloaded and installed a copy of MYSQL and PHP, and am now trying to change tohe root password, but I keep getting an error message.
I log in to MYSQL with:
    /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql
    from there I type:
    UPDATE mysql.user SET Password = PASSWORD('****') WHERE User = 'root';
but I keep getting an error message of:
ERROR 1142 (42000): UPDATE command denied to user ''@'localhost' for table 'user'
    what have I got wrong?

I've tried to follow the above advice.
I've completely deleted my MySQl on OS X Server 10.4.7 and reinstalled using the lastest package "mysql-standard-5.0.24a-osx10.4-powerpc.dmg".
I just cannot get mysql to work properly, to set my root password.
See my first attempts with Terminal below (No.1)...
MySQL Adminsitaror and CoCoa SQL connecs with no username or password.
I've also tried to follow marcs advice at http://www.entropy.ch/software/macosx/mysql/ but to no avail.
See my second attemps with Terminal below (No.2)...
If I can crack how to reinstall and setup MySQL on OS X Server 10.4.7 then I'll have a good Disaster Recovery Plan, I hope you can help, thanks.

  • How do  you reset the root password in Mountain Lion?

After install of Mountain Lion on my old iMac, I could not enter administrator, no password would work, Apple support helped me go through terminal to reset root password and root as administrator . I then was able to reset myself as administrator with a new pasword. I used that paassword a few times now it wont accept it again. I dont remember all the steps to reset the root password and recover from this situation.. Can anyone help?  Is this a bug in Mountain Lion?

I'm having similar issues but other concerns
    1. Can't go into recovery mode since its protected by firmware password, which I don't have. All option keys sequences go into the same firmware padlock, which I don't have the apparent pin.
    2. In terminal mode it didn't happen to recognize that unix command.  Also since I'm just on guest would that reset for the admin or possibly the guest acct?
    3. I've done the DIMM pulls and even though older model, 2011, it didn't appear to a reset for the firmware password.
    Any other options??

My root password is no longer recognised by the GUI.
Interesting enough i can still login to the Root users Terminal using the Root password in an administrative users account.
Righ before this occured i activated the file vault within my Admin account, it is not currently active on the root account,
i am not sure but consider this may have has an impact on the gui.

    Simon,
Are you able to change the root password in NetInfo manager? Also check there and make sure the root user is enabled.
Alternatively, you might just want to boot off your install CD and reset the password - probably the easiest way out.

  • Delete root password

Hi i am trying to enable root access as i need to perform a check on something and it seems that there is already a root password issued. when i enabled root in netinfo then went and tried to enter a password it says inncorret password meaning there is an old password and to change it i have to enter it. i have enabled root on this machince before to do various things but i always disable it and i thought that upon disabling root it also deletes the root password you set. is there a way to delete it manually with a terminal command or something?

If you have an "admin" account, you could set a new password for the "root" account using 'passwd' or 'dsenableroot', i.e. either of:<pre>sudo passwd root
dsenableroot -u adminusername</pre>For that matter, are you sure there is a need to enable to "root" user at all? An "admin" account can be used for many administrative functions without resorting to "root"...

Re: Reset admin password in Weblogic 9.2
    this worked for me.

  • Removing root password

I just setup a new mac mini (10.6) with an initial root password/user. I have since added the machine to a windows domain and would like to know how to remove the root password so the machine doesn't prompt for those mac credentials to make admin changes but rather defaults to the rights of the windows domain user.

The OS does not prompt you to activate the root account, and you are discouraged from ever doing so. It sounds to me like you set up an administrator account, which is not the same thing. (The root account is named "root". If that's not the name, then it is not the root account.) You must have at least one administrator account. I don't use Windows, so I can't help with that part.
If you did in fact activate the root account, you certainly do not have to wipe the drive and start over. Open *Mac Help* from the Finder and search for "root". One of the topics will be "Disabling the root user". Follow the instructions. No wiping involved.
