the network share like \\ip-address\share, as configured in Acronis
I get the error message: A device attached to the system is not functioning.
On the other hand, I can ping the NSS4000 and access share by using the
network (netbios) name instead of the ip.
This will work only for one day, also.
Now, if I try to access the share on the NSS4000 again by ip,
I get the error code 0x80070043 The networkname can not be found.
Ping on ip and netbiosname works.
Share access from one server to an other is not affected and full funtional at all times.
On the first sight I thought, that there it might be with the authentication protocol NTLMV2.
So I configured the GP to send only NTLM Authentication only, without fixing the problem.
    Fyi:
    I use a NSS4000, Firmware version 1.16-3
The NSS4000 is not a member in neither domains.
I created a dummy user account on each domain, an created a local user on the NSS4000 related
to the dummy user account on each domain.
A good answer helping me to fix with this issue, would be great.

I am constantly seeing this error at multiple sites on Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 Standard and DataCenter.
I have counted over 50 different server I manage with services such as   domain controller, hyper-v, file servers, exchange 2013, SQL 2008/2012, and print servers.
I have seen it happen on machine that have been in production for over 2 years and to machines that were just created last week.
It is happening on metal, hyper-v and esx vmware servers.
It is happening when the machine have updates waiting or no updates, or after updates have been applied and awaiting a restart.
It is happening on Dell PowerEdge server, HP Proliant servers and IBM servers.
It is happening on servers with Intel and AMD chip-sets.
It is happening on machines that are a part of a domain or in a workgroup.
It is happening on machines with AV of Bitdefendor, Trend Micro, Vipre, Microsoft Endpoint, and Symantec Endpoint.
Only a restart will fix it.
I have ran process monitor on several of the problem machines and I cannot find anything.
Since I have only started seeing this about 6 month ago it must be a Windows update causing it.

  • Mounting SBS2011 C:/ Share

I am trying to mount a Windows SBS2011 Share but I am repeatedly getting:

    Hi all,
Thanks for your advice.  I updated following settings and restart the server:
    - IPv6: set both address/DNS to dynamic
    - IPv4: Add 127.0.0.1 as alternate DNS server
Same error reported in dcdiag.   Besides, the server name used by nslookup is Unknown.
    I'm afraid if I've something missed :(
Sorry for the trouble caused.  Thanks a lot.
    Regards,
    /ST Wong

  • Intermittend DNS resolution, timeserver, group policy updates errors in client logs in Win 2012 R2 single server environement

We recently switched hardware and server software Win SBS 2008 to 2012R2 for a small network roughly 40 clients (Win7 Pro / Win 8.1 Pro) about 16 running concurrently at a given time and one network printer with the printer queue residing on the DC as well.
I read that a single server environment might not be ideal in particular no fail-over but that is an accepted risk in this particular network here.
    Errors:
Error 1043: Timeout during name resolution request
Error 1129: Group policy updates could not be processed due to DC not available
Error 5719: Could not establish secure connection to DC, DC not available
Occasionally but disappears after a while
Error 134: As a result of a DNS resolution timeout could not reach time server
    Symptoms
    On Win 7 Clients
Network shares added through Group Policy will not show sometimes
Network shares disconnect (red X) and when accessed return access authorization error after one or two clicks on the share finally grant access again
When the issue with accessing network shares occurs, it usually also affects Internet access meaning a 'server not responding' error appears in the browser windows when trying to open just any web page
nslookup during the incident returns cannot resolve error
ipconfig on client shows correct default router (VDSL Router) and DHCP / DNS Domain Controller
Also, the Win system log shows the above errors during these incidents, however, the nuimber of incidents vary from 20-30
    On Win 8.1 Clients
Same as above with the slight variation for network shares apparently due to Server 2012 and Win 8.1 clients managing drive shares differently. However, network share refresh does not work with this clients. In most cases only a gpupdate /force returns
drive shares but usually only for the active session. After logoff / logon the shares are gone again.
The issue does appear to be load related since it occurs even if there are only one or two workstations active.
    Server Configuration
    Dell R320 PowerEdge 16GB / 4TB 7200RPM RAID10 / GBitEthernet
    Zyxel 1910-48 Port Switch
    VDSL 50Mbps Down / 20Mbps Up
Since the DC is the only local DNS and there are no plans to add another one or move DNS to another server, the DNS server is configured with this own address as preferred DNS with three DNS forwarders 1) VDSL Router 2) ISP DNS1 3) ISP DNS2
Currently only one Network card is active for problem determination reasons.
There appears to be no consensus concerning IPV6 enabled or disabled, I tried both with no apparent effect
I have set all network cards server and client to Full Duplex and the same speed, also disabled Offload functions within the adapter settings. Some but no consistent improvements.
    Best Practice Analyzer Results
    DNS server scavening not enabled
Root hint server XYZ must respond to NS queries for the root zone
More than one forwarding server should be configured (although 3 are configured)
NIC1 should be configured to use both a preferred and alternate DNS (there is only one DNS in this network)
I have found some instructions to apply changes to the clients through a host file but I would rather like to understand whether this DNS response time issue can be resolved on the server for example timing setting perhaps. Currently the DNS forwarders are
    set to 3 second.
Since a few people have reported issues with DNS but most are working with multi DNS, DC environment I could not really apply any suggestions made there. perhaps there is anyone like me who is running a single server who has overcome or experience the same
issues. Any help would be appreciated

Hello Milos thx for your reply.. my comments below
    1. What does it "switched"? You may mean migration or new installation. We do not know...
    >> Switched is probably the incorrect term, replaced would be the appropriate wording. Before, there was a HP Proliant Server with SBS 2008 with distinct domain and now there is a Dell Server with MS 2012 R2 with a distinct domain. Client were
removed from one (SBS) domain and added to the new Server 2012 domain. Other components did not change for example same Network Switch or VDSL Router, Workstations and Printer
    2. Two DCs are better alternative. Or backup very frequently. There are two groups of administrators. Those who have lost DC and those who will experience this disaster in near future.
    >> Correct, and I am aware of that
    3. NIC settings in W 7 and W 8.1, namely DNS points to DC (...and NOTHING else. No public IP or that of router DNS.))
    >> Correct, this is how it's currently implemented. Clients point to DC for DHCP and DNS and Default Router, no public IP or DNS. The only references to ISP DNS exist on the VDSL Router itself as provided through ISP when establishing VDSL
Link and the list of Forwarders in the DNS Server configuration. However, I have just recently added the ISPs DNS as forwarders for test purposes and will probably learn tomorrow morning whether this had any effect for better or worse.
    4. Do nslookup to RR on clients. RR branch is saying client basic info on LDAP parameters of AD.
    >> Will post as soon as available
    5. I do not use forwarders and the system works
    >> Ok, does this mean it works for you in a similar or the same infrastructure setup or are you saying it is not required at all and I can remove any forwarder in a scenario like mine? If not required can you explain a bit more why it is not
required apart from that it does work for you that way?
    6. DHCP should sit on DC (DHCP on router is disabled)
    >> Correct, no other device is configured to provide DHCP service other than DC and DHCP is currently running on DC
    7. NIC settings in DC points to itself (loopback address 127.0.0.1)
    >> Are you sure this is still correct and does apply to Server 2012? I am reading articles stating that it should be the servers own IP but local loop or should this be added as alternate DNS in addition to the servers own IP?
    8. Use IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS whenever you change DNS settings.
    >> OK, that was not done every time I changed some settings but I can do that next week. Reboot alone would not suffice, correct?
    9. Test your system with dcdiag.
    >> See result below
    10. Share your findings.

  • Lion: Connecting to legacy (pre-Lion) AFP services - and Mac OS X (server)

After upgrading to MacOS X Lion, it was discovered that it was not possible to logon to Novell-shares and NAS-boxes (e.g. Qnap).
Here is a recipe that has been tested OK with the following combinations:
    * Mac OS X Lion -> Novell shares
    * Mac OS X Lion -> Mac OS X 10.5 server
    * Mac OS X Lion -> Mac OS X Lion
Please note that the command-lines themselves must not have CR/NL-characters. Copy the commands to a text-editor and remove format-inserted CR/NL-characters.
Another note: Your logon will be less secure with these changes. Later when e.g. Novell and/or your NAS-box support native Lion-logon, then please remove the AppleShareClient-parameter changes again with the first block.
    Recipe:
The following block can be skipped if you have not previously changed AppleShareClient-parameters:
    sudo -s
    chmod o+w /Library/Preferences
    cd  /Library/Preferences/
    rm com.apple.AppleShareClient.plist*
    ! Restart
The following block makes it possible to logon to: (1) Novell-shares (2) Pre Lion Mac-OS-X-volumes - and possibly non-native Lion logon NAS-shares:
    sudo -s
    chmod o+w /Library/Preferences
    defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleShareClient afp_host_prefs_version -int 1
    ! Restart
You now have to logon a real account (non-guest) on another Mac OS X Lion volume
to catalyst a creation of AppleShareClient-files. (See Apple-support-link) (Is this necessary?)
    ! instead?:
    /bin/sleep 60
    chmod o+w /Library/Preferences
defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleShareClient afp_disabled_uams -array "Cleartxt Passwrd" "MS2.0" "2-Way Randnum exchange"
    defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleShareClient afp_disabled_uams -array "DHX2"
    defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleShareClient afp_disabled_uams -array "DHCAST128"
    chmod o-w /Library/Preferences
    PS:
Possibly all volume-links may be deletes and recreated to use the new logon-parameters?

Thanks for your response, but this all looks pretty complicated to me.  I am not sure from this which lines I need to use and what I don't need.
    What are CR/NL characters?
In plain text files carriage-return (CR) and new-line (NL) has:

  • Dcdiag failing dns tests

w2k8 domain with two DCs - this error is present.
initially we had issues with initial synchronization of the directory by we logged a call with MS and they address a registry entry that bypassed the initial syncronization, but I can still see the errors below and a client not registering in DNS sue to no permissions.
canyou advise what can I do to get rid of this error:
    Log Name:      Directory Service
    Source:        Microsoft-Windows-ActiveDirectory_DomainService
    Date:          28/10/2009 18:54:04
    Event ID:      2088
    Task Category: DS RPC Client
    Level:         Warning
    Keywords:      Classic
    User:          ANONYMOUS LOGON
    Computer:      olivia.domain.com
    Description:
Active Directory Domain Services could not use DNS to resolve the IP address of the source domain controller listed below. To maintain the consistency of Security groups, group policy, users and computers and their passwords, Active Directory Domain Services successfully replicated using the NetBIOS or fully qualified computer name of the source domain controller.
Invalid DNS configuration may be affecting other essential operations on member computers, domain controllers or application servers in this Active Directory Domain Services forest, including logon authentication or access to network resources.
You should immediately resolve this DNS configuration error so that this domain controller can resolve the IP address of the source domain controller using DNS.
    Alternate server name:
     katie
    Failing DNS host name:
     60c35a20-978b-4e86-9751-e65d9e584e76._msdcs.domain.com
NOTE: By default, only up to 10 DNS failures are shown for any given 12 hour period, even if more than 10 failures occur.  To log all individual failure events, set the following diagnostics registry value to 1:
    Registry Path:
    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NTDS\Diagnostics\22 DS RPC Client
    User Action:
     1) If the source domain controller is no longer functioning or its operating system has been reinstalled with a different computer name or NTDSDSA object GUID, remove the source domain controller's metadata with ntdsutil.exe, using the steps outlined in MSKB article 216498.
     2) Confirm that the source domain controller is running Active Directory Domain Services and is accessible on the network by typing "net view \\<source DC name>" or "ping <source DC name>".
     3) Verify that the source domain controller is using a valid DNS server for DNS services, and that the source domain controller's host record and CNAME record are correctly registered, using the DNS Enhanced version of DCDIAG.EXE available on http://www.microsoft.com/dns
      dcdiag /test:dns
     4) Verify that this destination domain controller is using a valid DNS server for DNS services, by running the DNS Enhanced version of DCDIAG.EXE command on the console of the destination domain controller, as follows:
      dcdiag /test:dns

Thanks Isaac, but unfortunately this issue persists and I am still getting that error for the client failing to register in dns

    Description:
The system failed to register host (A) resource records (RRs) for network adapter
    with settings:
       Adapter Name : {9C8B441A-8831-4B60-8470-D7D3982B3471}
       Host Name : alexis
       Primary Domain Suffix : domain.com
       DNS server list :
          10.30.0.1, 10.30.0.2
Sent update to server : 10.30.0.1
       IP Address(es) :
         10.0.0.167
The reason the system could not register these RRs was because the DNS server contacted refused the update request. The reasons for this might be (a) you are not allowed to update the specified DNS domain name, or (b) because the DNS server authoritative for this name does not support the DNS dynamic update protocol.
To register the DNS host (A) resource records using the specific DNS domain name and IP addresses for this adapter, contact your DNS server or network systems administrator.

  • HT1198 Can I share my iPhoto library with other logons on the same computer

My iMac has three separate logons for members of my family. However, it would be very useful if we call all access the same iPhoto library. Is this possible?

To give others selective access to your iPhoto library, you have the option of using Shared Photo Streams in iCloud, if the privacy implications don't bother you.
There are more drawbacks to Shared Streams, than the privacy problem,Linc. Shared streams, imho, are perfect for showing off a small selection of photos, but nearly all work invested into the iPhoto library will be lost this way. Titles, caption, ratings do not transfer, and once added to the stream, you cannot rearrange the sequence of photos. Edits are no longer reversible.  If several family members are sharing photos this way on the same computer, they will all have to create their own photo libraries, create redundant photos, and have to recreate all the metadata. It is wasteful, if they really want to share a common iPhoto library.
The only practical way to do what you want is to let the two family members who need write access log in to the same account to make changes.
I am curious, Linc. Do you see problems with Apple's own recommendation, that LarryHN linked to -  - iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users  ?

  • Unable to create CIFS share in NSS4000 after upgrading firmware

    Hi,
    Hopefully someone can help.
Today I have upgraded the firmware of an NSS4000 ( i wish i hadn't) to the latest 1.16 version.
As it seems I was not able to connect to this server anymore using SMB share CIFS. When i looked under shares I noticed that CIFS was unselected. Went in an selected it back on and hit update. Went in again and found that again it had disappeared and only leaves FTP as selected.
Anyone any ideas on how i can tackle this issue? Have been browsing the web for answers for hours with no luck!!!
    Thanks, Mo

Welcome to Cisco Community, hope we are able to correct this problem with you.
When you updated the FW, did you run the update twice, and follow the on screen instructions after reboot, stating to flush the browser cache? It really seems like we either are seeing bogus information due to cached pages, or we have corrupted the config. If possible, please post the log files from your NSS to see if we are able to see what is failing.

  • NSS4000 missing volumes and shares, but RAID ok?

We have an NSS4000 with a RAID5 array. We started a large CIFS file transfer to a windows 2003 server from a sharepoint this weekend ironiclly to back up the device and during the file scan process, we encountered communiction errors and the file transfer didn't even start. We could ping the device, but could not log into web admin or mount any shares. We pulled the power cord, put the usb boot drive in the back usb slot as usual and rebooted the device. The device booted up ok we can log into the web admin, the RAID5 array lists OK / healthy, but there are no volumes or shares.
    I found this post
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/2114726
and thought it was like our case and:
    1. backed up configuration
    2. reset to factory
    3. restored configuration
    4. reset drives (when powered off)
    5. looked over the fstab config files and the seem to have the right volume and shares listed,
Above did not restore access to shares. After some addtional research, I found reference to shares going missing after improper shutdown, so we created a new volume on the healthly array with the exact same name as before and a single share with same name as before / rebooted. Not exactly sure this was the best idea since I'm not sure what creating a volume and a share might do to actual sectors on the array.
The array lists 0% used, but the 1.36 array was almost full before this issue.
    Questions:
    1. is there anything else we can try that is within the grasp of non linux experts?
    2. any recommendations for data recovery companies expereinced with recovering data from these devices?
    3. I have contacted http://www.securedatarecovery.com/ for a data recovery quote.  Has anyone used them?
    Thanks for any input.

"\\servername\share is not available. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
there are currently no logon server available to service the logon request".
I validated trusts - everything validating fine.
In the event log of remote server, I am trying to access I found this error EventID 4625 from Microsoft Windows Security:
An account failed to log on.
    Subject:

This event is generated when a logon request fails. It is generated on the computer where access was attempted.
The Subject fields indicate the account on the local system which requested the logon. This is most commonly a service such as the Server service, or a local process such as Winlogon.exe or Services.exe.
The Logon Type field indicates the kind of logon that was requested. The most common types are 2 (interactive) and 3 (network).
The Process Information fields indicate which account and process on the system requested the logon.
The Network Information fields indicate where a remote logon request originated. Workstation name is not always available and may be left blank in some cases.
The authentication information fields provide detailed information about this specific logon request.
    - Transited services indicate which intermediate services have participated in this logon request.
    - Package name indicates which sub-protocol was used among the NTLM protocols.
    - Key length indicates the length of the generated session key. This will be 0 if no session key was requested.
What would be the proper steps to troubleshoot it?

  • NSS4000 Lost shares

NSS4000. Two disks in RAID1 config. Shome shares created inside de RAID.
The RAID got degraded yesterday (drive failure) and I've rebuild the RAID using the web interface (edit the raid, add the failed disk to the raid). After that the shares are gone. Any chance to recover the lost data?
    Thank you

I didn't replace the disk. After the drive failure reported in the log the RAID1 was running in degraded mode, but the "faulty" disk (not faulty really) was reported as online. I went to RAID management, pushed the edit button and added the disk. The RAID began resyncing and I went away.
I dont know if it's related to, but the next time i accessed the NAS the shares were not there.
    Regards.

  • Mounted network shares pop up in Finder with every logon

Every time I log in, a Finder window pops up for every server share I'm connected to. I work in basically a Windows shop, so, I need to connect to 7 or 8 Windows shares, all day long. It's annoying to have to close all of these windows. I've found some solutions here using either AppleScript or Automator, but, neither of them work, at least now under Lion. It did apparently work under older OSs.
    Thanks.

Figured out the last filesystem upgrade from Decemeber is causing this. Bug posted- FS#27851.

  • [SOLVED] Share Multiple Directories With Samba On Arch Linux and XP

    Hello,
I have had the worst luck so far with Samba, which is far more likely because of an error on my part than on Samba's.
I can only seem to share one directory regardless of how I setup my smb.conf. And worse yet, if I mess with Samba, smb.conf, after the first time I set it up it doesn't work again until I reinstall my OS. Now I'm sure that reinstalling isn't the only option, but I haven't figured out how to make it work again any other way. I've tried uninstalling it, deleting it from the cache, deleting /etc/samba and so on, still can't connect to it from XP when I reinstall it.
I'm running Arch64 and I want to share some directories with a laptop running Windows XP.
I want to share my home folder, but have it accessible from XP only by me, share my mother's home folder, and have it accessible on XP only by her (well actually I guess it needs to be accessible by both, since i'm the admin), share my media-server (a collection of five hard drives where I store movies and such), and have it read/write by both of us. And finally share /srv so I can work on that from the XP computer as well. I think that's all. And I would like to share printers between the two computers. I would also like to access XP files from here.
I've always been able to get the media-server to share, but that's it, nothing else. And it doesn't always work right. It doesn't seem to want to follow sym links, but like I say if I mess with it it will stop working all together. So I'm not sure what to do.
A thought was to instead make a /media/samba-share directory and share that, and inside it have symlinks to my home, media-server, etc. However, that will only work if samba will follow symlinks for me.
Here is the smb.conf I am planning to use at the moment:
    # This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
    # smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
    # here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options (perhaps too
    # many!) most of which are not shown in this example
    # For a step to step guide on installing, configuring and using samba,
    # read the Samba-HOWTO-Collection. This may be obtained from:
    # Many working examples of smb.conf files can be found in the
    # Samba-Guide which is generated daily and can be downloaded from:
    # Any line which starts with a ; (semi-colon) or a # (hash)
    # is a comment and is ignored. In this example we will use a #
    # for commentry and a ; for parts of the config file that you
    # may wish to enable
    # NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command "testparm"
    # to check that you have not made any basic syntactic errors.

Now I wouldn't think I would need to list my home and mom's home seperately, but since [homes] has never worked for me in the past i thought i would give it a try. Does this look like something that would do what I am wanting?
Otherwise I would delete [homes], [media-server], [theavataroftime], [christina], and [server] and replace them with just [samba-share] with all those as symlinks inside that directory as before mentioned.
Anyway, thanks for the help. Any good guide on this matter would be appreciated, I have looked at several, but more can't hurt . Networking isn't my thing so to speak, so please be specific in any explanations. Thanks again.

Well it seems that my trouble all started when I began using the 'printable = yes' option for shares. Since I removed that the troubles seem to have left me.
Does anyone know why that is listed as on option in smb.conf here:
    # A publicly accessible directory, but read only, except for people in
    # the "staff" group
    ;[public]
    ; comment = Public Stuff
    ; path = /home/samba
    ; public = yes
    ; writable = yes
    ; printable = no
    ; write list = @staff
As well as in a few other examples if it doesn't work? I seen the example and assumed that option was needed to print from those shared directories.
Also, it seems that the comma is not needed between the 'valid users' names.
Also, I guess it wasn't Windows XP's fault either but rather my own ignorance. I like the idea of blaming Windows better though.....
I hope this servers to help others to aviod my mistakes.

  • Error message when mapping to a network drive of a DFS share on Windows 7

    Hi,
We are getting the following error when mapping to a network drive of a DFS share on Windows 7:
“The mapped network drive could not be created because the following error has occurred:
A specified logon session does not exist. It may already have been terminated."
In our case, the user logs on his workstation using his regular domain account, then maps to the network DFS share using the service account of an application.
There is a fix from Microsoft (MS KB968264). But this fix requires disabling the "Network access: Do not allow storage of credentials or .NET Passports for network authentication” property. This is against the Microsoft own best practices (Network access:
“Do not allow storage of passwords and credentials for network authentication” should be set to
ENABLED), and is NOT acceptable for us for obvious security reasons.
Question: Does anyone know an alternative fix to this issue that does not introduce security risks?
    Thank you in advance!
